Multi-field inflation from a higher derivative N = 1 Supergravity model

We study the cosmological evolution of a N = 1 supergravity model, dual to a higher derivative supergravity model coupled to scalar fields so that in the Einstein frame the model is ghost free. We find that this model admit slow roll inflationary solutions showing essentially two-field inflation. The cosmological parameters calculated for this model lie in acceptable range with corrections of the order lnN/N, N being the number of e-foldings, compared to the Starobinsky inflation model.

Reconstruction of Cosmological Evolution in the Presence of Extra Dimensions

The model of Physics resulting from a Kaluza-Klein dimensional reduction procedure offers very good dark matter candidates in the form of Light Kaluza-Klein Particles, and thus becomes relevant to Cosmology. In this work we recover a late-time cosmological picture, similar to that of the $Λ$CDM, in a multidimensional scenario, in the general framework of Universal Extra Dimensions. This is achieved by utilizing a special, Kasner-type solution that is analytically known, and acts as an attractor for a plethora of pairs of initial conditions of the usual and extra spatial Hubble parameters. The phenomenology of fundamental interactions dictates the stabilization of the extra dimensional evolution from a very early epoch in these scenarios. Without an explicit mechanism, this is achieved through particular behaviors of the usual and extra spatial fluids, which have to be motivated by a more fundamental theory.

Deforming the Starobinsky model in ghost-free higher derivative supergravities

We consider higher derivative supergravities that are dual to ghost-free $N=1$ supergravity theories in the Einstein frame. The duality is implemented by deforming the Kähler function, and/or the superpotential, to include nonlinear dependences on chiral fields that in other approaches play the role of the Lagrange multipliers employed to establish this duality. These models are of the no-scale type, and in the minimal case, require the presence of four chiral multiplets, with a Kähler potential having the structure of the $ SU(4,1)/SU(4) \times U(1) $ coset manifold. In the standard $N=1$ supergravity formulation, these models are described by a multifield scalar potential, featuring Starobinsky-like behavior in particular directions.

Inflation in $R^2$ supergravity with non-minimal superpotentials

We investigate the cosmological inflation in a class of supergravity models that are generalizations of non-supersymmetric $R^2$ models. Although such models have been extensively studied recently, especially after the launch of the PLANCK and BICEP2 data, the class of models that can be constructed has not been exhausted. In this note, working in a supergravity model that is a generalization of Cecotti's model, we show that the appearance of new superpotential terms, which are quadratic in the superfield $\, Λ$ that couples to the Ricci supermultiplet, alters substantially the form of the scalar potential. The arising potential has the form of the Starobinsky potential times a factor that is exponential in the inflaton field and dominates for large inflaton values. We show that the well-known Starobinsky inflation scenario is maintained only for unnaturally small fine-tuned values of the coupling describing the $Λ^2$ superpotential terms. A welcome feature is the possible increase of the tensor to scalar ratio $r$, within the limits set by the new Planck and BICEP2 data.

Universe Acceleration in Brane World Models

We examine the cosmology induced on a brane moving in the background of a five-dimensional black hole, solution of the string effective action. The evolution, determined by the Israel junction conditions is found to be compatible with an accelerating universe with the present day acceleration coming after a decelerating phase. The possible species of the energy-momentum tensor, localized on the brane, for these solutions to be valid are discussed.

Six-dimensional origin of gravity mediated brane to brane supersymmetry breaking

Four dimensional supergravities may be the right framework to describe particle physics at low energies. Its connection to the underlying string theory can be implemented through higher dimensional supergravities which bear special characteristics. Their reduction to four dimensions breaks supersymmetry whose magnitude depends both on the compactifying manifold and the mechanism that generates the breaking. In particular compactifications, notably on a $S_1/Z_2$ orbifold, the breaking of supersymmetry occuring on a hidden brane, residing at one end of $S_1/Z_2$, is communicated to the visible brane which lies at the other end, via gravitational interactions propagating in the bulk. This scenario has been exemplified in the framework of the $N=2$, $D=5$ supergravity. In this note, motivated by the recent developments in the field, related to the six-dimensional description of the supergravity theory, we study the $N=2$, $D=5$ supergravity theory as originating from a $D=6$ supergravity which, in addition to the gravity, includes a number of tensor multiplets. This reduces to $N=1$, $D=4$ supergravity in a two step manner, first by Kaluza-Klein reduction followed by a $S_1/Z_2$ orbifold compactification. The resulting theory has striking similarities with the one that follows from the single standalone $N=2$, $D=5$ supergravity, with no reference to the underlying higher dimensional $D=6$ supergravity, and a structure that makes the supersymmetry breaking mechanisms studied in the past easily incorporated in higher dimensional schemes.

The soft supersymmetry breaking in D=5 supergravity compactified on S_1/Z_2 orbifolds

We study the origin of the supersymmetry breaking induced by the mediation of gravity and the radion multiplet from the hidden to the visible brane in the context of the N=2, D=5 supergravity compactified on S_1/Z_2 orbifolds. The soft supersymmetry breaking terms for scalar masses, trilinear scalar couplings and gaugino masses are calculated to leading order in the five dimensional Newton's constant k_5^2 and the gravitino mass m_{3/2}. These are finite and non-vanishing, with the scalar soft masses be non-tachyonic, and are all expressed in terms of the gravitino mass and the length scale R of the fifth dimension. The soft supersymmetry breaking parameters are thus correlated and the phenomenological implications are discussed.

Five-Dimensional Black Hole String Backgrounds and Brane Universe Acceleration

We examine background solutions of black hole type arising from the string effective action in five dimensions. We derive the unique metric - dilaton vacuum which is a Schwarzschild type black hole. It is found that it can be extended to incorporate electric charge without changing the topology of the three space. Kalb-Ramond charge may also be introduced if the three space is closed. The basic features of the cosmology induced on a three brane evolving in this background are also discussed.

On the radion mediation of the Supersymmetry breaking in N=2, D=5 Supergravity Orbifolds

We discuss the on-shell N=1 Supersymmetric coupling of brane chiral multiplets in the context of N=2, D=5 Supergravity compactified on $S_1/Z_2$ orbifolds. Assuming a constant superpotential on the hidden brane we study the transmission of the supersymmetry breaking to the visible brane. We find that to lowest order in the five dimensional Newton's constant $k_5^2$ and gravitino mass $m_{3/2}^2$ the spinor field of the radion multiplet is responsible of inducing positive one-loop squared masses $m_ϕ^2 \sim {m_{3/2}^2} / (M_{Planck}^2 R^2)$ to the scalar fields which are localized on the visible brane with $R$ the length scale of the fifth dimension. Considering a cubic superpotential on the visible brane we also find that non-vanishing soft trilinear scalar couplings $A$ are induced given by $A=3m_ϕ^2/m_{3/2}$.

Dissipative Liouville Cosmology: A Case Study

We consider solutions of the cosmological equations pertaining to a dissipative, dilaton-driven off-equilibrium Liouville Cosmological model, which may describe the effective field theoretic limit of a non-critical string model of the Universe. The non-criticality may be the result of an early-era catastrophic cosmic event, such as a big-bang, brane-world collision etc. The evolution of the various cosmological parameters of the model are obtained, and the effects of the dilaton and off-shell Liouville terms, including briefly those on relic densities, which distinguish the model from conventional cosmologies, are emphasised.

On the brane coupling of Unified orbifolds with gauge interactions in the bulk

In the on-shell formulation of $D=5 $, N=2 supergravity, compactified on $S^1/Z_2$, we extend the results of Mirabelli and Peskin describing the interaction of the bulk fields with matter which is assumed to be confined on the brane. The novel characteristics of this approach are : Propagation of both gravity and gauge fields in the bulk, which offers an alternative for a unified description of models in extra dimensions and use of the on-shell formulation avoiding the complexity of off-shell schemes which involve numerous auxiliary fields. We also allow for nontrivial superpotential interactions of the chiral matter fields. The method we employ uses the N{\" o}ther procedure and our findings are useful for building models advocating propagation of the gauge degrees of freedom in the bulk, in addition to gravity.

Acceleration of the Universe in Type-0 Non-Critical Strings

Presently there is preliminary observational evidence that the cosmological constant might be non zero, and hence that our Universe is eternally accelerating (de Sitter). This poses fundamental problems for string theory, since a scattering matrix is not well defined in such Universes. In a previous paper we have presented a model, based on (non-equilibrium) non-critical strings, which is characterized by eventual ``graceful'' exit from a de Sitter phase. The model is based on a type-0 string theory, involving D3 brane worlds, whose initial quantum fluctuations induce the non criticality. We argue in this article that this model is compatible with the current observations. A crucial rôle for the correct ``phenomenology'' of the model is played by the relative magnitude of the flux of the five form of the type 0 string to the size of five of the extra dimensions, transverse to the direction of the flux-field. We do not claim, at this stage at least, that this model is a realistic physical model for the Universe, but we find it interesting that the model cannot be ruled out immediately, at least on phenomenological grounds.

On the Stability of the Classical Vacua in a Minimal SU(5) 5-D Supergravity Model

We consider a five-dimensional supergravity model with SU(5) gauge symmetry and the minimal field content. Studying the arising scalar potential we find that the gauging of the $U(1)_R$ symmetry of the five-dimensional supergravity causes instabilities. Lifting the instabilities the vacua are of Anti-de-Sitter type and SU(5) is broken along with supersymmetry. Keeping the $U(1)_R$ ungauged the potential has flat directions along which supersymmetry is unbroken.

Casimir Effect in 2D Stringy Black Hole Backgrounds

We consider the two-dimensional "Schwarzschild" and "Reissner-Nordstrom" stringy black holes as systems of Casimir type. We explicitly calculate the energy-momentum tensor of a massless scalar field satisfying Dirichlet boundary conditions on two one-dimensional "walls". These results are obtained using the Wald's axioms. Thermodynamical quantities such as pressure, specific heat, isothermal compressibility and entropy of the two-dimensional stringy black holes are calculated. A comparison is made between the obtained results and the laws of thermodynamics. The results obtained for the extremal (Q=M) stringy two-dimensional charged black hole are identical in all three different vacua used; a fact that indicates its quantum stability.

Cosmological Evolution in a Type-0 String Theory

We study the cosmological evolution of a type-0 string theory by employing non-criticality, which may be induced by fluctuations of the D3 brane worlds. We check the consistency of the approach to O(alpha ') in the corresponding sigma-model. The ten-dimensional theory is reduced to an effective four-dimensional model, with only time dependent fields. We show that the four-dimensional universe has an inflationary phase and graceful exit from it, while the other extra dimensions are stabilized to a constant value, with the fifth dimension much larger than the others. We pay particular attention to demonstrating the role of tachyonic matter in inducing these features. The Universe asymptotes, for large times, to a non-accelerating linearly-expanding Universe with a time-dependent dilaton and a relaxing to zero vacuum energy a la quintessence.

Bogoliubov Coefficients of 2D Charged Black Holes

We exactly calculate the thermal distribution and temperature of Hawking radiation for a two-dimensional charged dilatonic black hole after it has settled down to an "equilibrium" state. The calculation is carried out using the Bogoliubov coefficients. The background of the process is furnished by a preexisting black hole and not by collapsing matter as considered by Giddings and Nelson for the case of a Schwarzschild black hole. Furthermore, the vanishing of the temperature and/or the Hawking radiation in the extremal case is obtained as a regular limit of the general case.

Static and non-static quantum effects in two-dimensional dilaton gravity

We study backreaction effects in two-dimensional dilaton gravity. The backreaction comes from an $R^2$ term which is a part of the one-loop effective action arising from massive scalar field quantization in a certain approximation. The peculiarity of this term is that it does not contribute to the Hawking radiation of the classical black hole solution of the field equations. In the static case we examine the horizon and the physical singularity of the new black hole solutions. Studying the possibility of time dependence we see the generation of a new singularity. The particular solution found still has the structure of a black hole, indicating that non-thermal effects cannot lead, at least in this approximation, to black hole evaporation.

On `Graceful Exit' from inflationary phase in two-dimensional Liouville String Cosmology

Within the context of a super-critical (Liouville) string, we discuss (target-space) two-dimensional string cosmology. A numerical analysis indicates that the identification of time with the Liouville mode results in an expanding universe with matter which exhibits an inflationary phase, and `graceful exit' from it, tending asymptotically to a flat-metric fixed point. This fixed point is characterized by a dilaton configuration which, depending on the initial conditions, either decreases linearly with the cosmic time, or is a finite constant. This implies that, in contrast to the critical string case, the string coupling remains bounded during the exit from the inflationary phase, and, thus, the pertinent dynamics can be reliably described in terms of a tree-level string effective action. The rôle of matter in inducing such phenomena is emphasized. It is also interesting to note that the asymptotic value of the vacuum energy, which in the $σ$-model framework is identified with the `running' central charge deficit, depends crucially on the set of initial conditions. Thus, although preliminary, this toy model seems to share all the features expected to characterize a phenomenologically acceptable cosmological string model.
