Spin Correlations in Ho$_{2}$Ti$_{2}$O$_{7}$: a Dipolar Spin Ice System

The pyrochlore material $\rm Ho_{2}Ti_{2}O_{7}$ has been suggested to show ``spin ice'' behaviour. We present neutron scattering and specific heat results that establish unambiguously that Ho$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ exhibits spin ice correlations at low temperature. Diffuse magnetic neutron scattering from Ho$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ is found to be quite well described by a near neighbour spin ice model and very accurately described by a dipolar spin ice model. The heat capacity is well accounted for by the sum of a dipolar spin ice contribution and an expected nuclear spin contribution, known to exist in other Ho$^{3+}$ salts. These results settle the question of the nature of the low temperature spin correlations in $\rm Ho_{2}Ti_{2}O_{7}$ for which contradictory claims have been made.

Magnetic and Thermodynamic Properties of the Collective Paramagnet-Spin Liquid Pyrochlore Tb2Ti2O7

In a recent letter [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 82}, 1012 (1999)] it was found that the Tb$^{3+}$ magnetic moments in the Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ pyrochlore lattice of corner-sharing tetrahedra remain in a {\it collective paramagnetic} state down to 70mK. In this paper we present results from d.c. magnetic susceptibility, specific heat data, inelastic neutron scattering measurements, and crystal field calculations that strongly suggest that (1) the Tb$^{3+}$ ions in Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ possess a moment of approximatively 5$μ_{\rm B}$, and (2) the ground state $g-$tensor is extremely anisotropic below a temperature of $O(10^0)$K, with Ising-like Tb$^{3+}$ magnetic moments confined to point along a local cubic $<111>$ diagonal (e.g. towards the middle of the tetrahedron). Such a very large easy-axis Ising like anisotropy along a $<111>$ direction dramatically reduces the frustration otherwise present in a Heisenberg pyrochlore antiferromagnet. The results presented herein underpin the conceptual difficulty in understanding the microscopic mechanism(s) responsible for Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ failing to develop long-range order at a temperature of the order of the paramagnetic Curie-Weiss temperature $θ_{\rm CW} \approx -10^1$K. We suggest that dipolar interactions and extra perturbative exchange coupling(s)beyond nearest-neighbors may be responsible for the lack of ordering of Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$.

Comment on `Ising Pyrochlore Magnets: Low Temperature Properties, ``Ice Rules,'' and Beyond' by R. Siddharthan et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 83, 1854 (1999)

In this Comment we argue that Ho$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ does not exhibit a transition to a partially ordered state unlike what is argued in PRL 83, 1854 (1999), that it exhibits spin ice behavior, and that the experimental specific heat data by Siddharthan et al. can be accounted for in terms of a "dipolar spin ice" model by including an expected contibution from the nuclear Ho spins to the appropriate long-range treatment of the dipole-dipole interactions.

Groundstate properties of the BCS-Bose Einstein crossover in a $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$ wave superconductor

We examine the groundstate properties of the crossover between BCS superconductivity and Bose Einstein condensation within a model which exhibits $d_{x^{2} - y^{2}}$ pairing symmetry. We compare results for zero temperature with known features of s-wave systems and show that bosonic degrees of freedom are likely to emerge only in the dilute limit. We relate the change in properties of the groundstate as a function of density to the effect of the exclusion principle and show that the one particle distribution function undergoes a significant change when bosonic behavior appears.

Properties of SAS Josephson junctions in SO(5) theory

We derive the qualitative behavior of superconductor-antiferromagnet- superconductor (SAS) Josephson junctions described by Zhang's SO(5) theory. The main differences between these junctions and conventional SIS junctions arise from the non-sinusoidal current-phase relation derived by Demler et al. for thin SAS junctions. Using a simple approximation to this non-sinusoidal function, the current voltage relation, Shapiro steps, thermal fluctuation effects and the diffraction pattern in a magnetic field are obtained.

Local moment formation in zinc doped cuprates

We suggest that when zinc is substituted for copper in the copper oxide planes of high $T_{c}$ superconductors, it does not necessarily have a valency of 2+. Rather, the valency of a zinc impurity should be determined by its surrounding medium. In order to study this hypothesis, we examine the effect of static impurities inducing diagonal disorder within a one band Hubbard model coupled to a localised state. We use this model to discuss the physics of zinc doping in the cuprates. Specifically, we discuss the formation of local moments near impurity sites and the modification of the transverse spin susceptibility in the antiferromagnetic state.

Aspects of the normal state phase of copper oxide planes in high Tc superconductors

We examine various aspects of the normal state phase of ${\rm CuO_{2}}$ planes in the high Tc superconductors. In particular, within the context of the three band Hubbard model, we study as a function of doping the competition between a charge density wave phase induced by oxygen breathing modes, antiferromagnetic order and paramagnetism. To account for the strong electronic interactions, we use the finite $U$ slave boson method of Kotliar and Ruckenstein.
