Time as a Dynamical Variable

There are enough reasons for us to consider time as a dynamical variable or operator; but according to Pauli's argument the existence of a self-adjoint time operator is incompatible with the semi-boundedness of Hamiltonian spectrum. In this article, we study the expressions of time operator and the definitions of mean time from a general and new viewpoint, make a new comment on Pauli's objections, and clarify some possible confusion in existing theories of time in quantum mechanics. From which we try to provide a new gateway for the conundrum of time in quantum mechanics and reconstruct a unified foundation for some issues of time.

Holographic description of Kerr-Bolt-AdS-dS Spacetimes

We show that there exists a holographic 2D CFT description of a Kerr-Bolt-AdS-dS spacetime. We first consider the wave equation of a massless scalar field propagating in extremal Kerr-Bolt-AdS-dS spacetimes and find in the "near region", the wave equation in extremal limit could be written in terms of the $SL(2,R)$ quadratic Casimir. This suggests that there exist dual CFT descriptions of these black holes. In the probe limit, we compute the scattering amplitudes of the scalar off the extremal black holes and find perfect agreement with the CFT prediction. Furthermore we study the holographic description of the generic four dimensional non-extremal Kerr-Bolt-AdS-dS black holes. We find that if focusing on the near-horizon region, for the massless scalar scattering in the low-frequency limit, the radial equation could still be rewritten as the $SL(2,R)$ quadratic Casimir, suggesting the existence of dual 2D description. We read the temperatures of the dual CFT from the conformal coordinates and obtain the central charges by studying the near-horizon geometry of near-extremal black holes. We recover the macroscopic entropy from the microscopic counting. We also show that for the superradiant scattering, the retarded Green's functions and the corresponding absorption cross sections are in perfect match with CFT prediction.

Including Absorption in Gordon's Optical Metric

We show that Gordon's optical metric on a curved spacetime can be generalized to include absorption by allowing the metric to become complex. We demonstrate its use in the realm of geometrical optics by giving three simple examples. We use one of these examples to compute corrected distance-redshift relations for Friedman-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker models in which the cosmic fluid has an associated complex index of refraction that represents grey extinction. We then fit this corrected Hubble curve to the type Ia supernovae data and provide a possible explanation (other than dark energy) of the deviation of these observations from dark matter predictions.

Cosmology With A Dark Refraction Index

We review Gordon's optical metric and the transport equations for the amplitude and polarization of a geometrical optics wave traveling in a gravity field. We apply the theory to the FLRW cosmologies by associating a refraction index with the cosmic fluid. We then derive an expression for the accumulated effect of a refraction index on the distance redshift relations and fit the Hubble curve of current supernova observations with a non-accelerating cosmological model. We also show that some observational effects caused by inhomogeneities, e.g. the Sachs-Wolfe effect, can be interpreted as being caused by an effective index of refraction, and hence this theory could extend to other speed of light communications such as gravitational radiation and neutrino fluxes.

Coherent shift of localized bound pair in Bose Hubbard model

Based on the exact results obtained by Bethe ansatz, we demonstrate the existence of stable bound pair (BP) wave packet in Bose Hubbard model with arbitrary on-site interaction U. In large-U regime, it is found that an incoming single-particle (SP) can coherently pass through a BP wave packet and leave a coherent shift in the position of it. This suggests a simple scheme for constructing a BP charge qubit to realize a quantum switch, which is capable of controlling the coherent transport of one and only one photon in a one-dimensional waveguide.

Silicon microneedles array with biodegradable tips for transdermal drug delivery

This paper presents the fabrication process, characterization results and basic functionality of silicon microneedles array with biodegradable tips. In order to avoid the main problems related to silicon microneedles : broking of the top part of the needles inside the skin, a simple solution can be fabrication of microneedles array with biodegradable tips. The silicon microneedles array was fabricated by using reactive ion etching while the biodegradable tips were performed using and anodization process that generates selectively porous silicon only on the top part of the skin. The paper presents also the results of in vitro release of calcein using microneedles array with biodegradable tips

Observation of inhomogeneous domain nucleation in epitaxial Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 capacitors

We investigated domain nucleation process in epitaxial Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 capacitors under a modified piezoresponse force microscope. We obtained domain evolution images during polarization switching process and observed that domain nucleation occurs at particular sites. This inhomogeneous nucleation process should play an important role in an early stage of switching and under a high electric field. We found that the number of nuclei is linearly proportional to log(switching time), suggesting a broad distribution of activation energies for nucleation. The nucleation sites for a positive bias differ from those for a negative bias, indicating that most nucleation sites are located at ferroelectric/electrode interfaces.

Steps for Solving the Transfer Equation for Arbitrary Flows in Stationary Spacetimes

We derive the radiative transfer equation for arbitrary stationary relativistic flows in stationary spacetimes, i.e. for steady-state transfer problems. We show how the standard characteristics method of solution developed by Mihalas and used throughout the radiative transfer community can be adapted to multi-dimensional applications with isotropic sources. Because the characteristics always coincide with geodesics and can always be specified by constants, direct integration of the characteristics derived from the transfer equation as commonly done in 1-D applications is not required. The characteristics are known for a specified metric from the geodesics. We give details in both flat and static spherically symmetric spacetimes. This work has direct application in 3-dimensional simulations of supernovae, gamma-ray bursts, and active galactic nuclei, as well as in modeling neutron star atmospheres.

Chang-Refsdal Microlensed Type Ia Supernova Light Curves

A description of the light curves of microlensed Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) as extended and expanding sources is presented. We give examples of what microlensing by stellar-mass Chang-Refsdal lenses can do to a small percentage of supernova light curves. We find that in addition to overall brightening, significant changes in light--curve shapes can also occur. Peaks can be distorted, plateaus can appear, and even secondary peaks can be formed. The effects of both the relative motion of the lens and the supernova and the expansion of the supernova are given and compared. The effects of relative motion are more pronounced when a distant supernova ($z_s \sim 1$) impacts well within the Einstein ring of a nearby microlens ($z_d \sim 0.05$) and are less important for more distant deflectors. We also find that the increase in shear that comes with increased deflector distance tends to reduce the time variability of microlensing. We briefly discuss the probability of observing these effects.

A Theoretical Investigation of Relativistic Spintronics

Spintronics directly based on relativistic quantum mechanics is called as relativistic spintronics, which involves the study of active control and manipulation of 4D spin-tensor degrees of freedom via the electromagnetic field tensor. For future potential electronic devices with smaller size, the study of relativistic spintronics would be valuable. In this paper, we try to establish a general theoretical basis for relativistic spintronics, from which we have: 1) in relativistic spintronics, there have more plentiful contents for relativistic effects, e.g. the usual 3D spatial spin-orbit coupling is extended to the 4D spin-orbit-tensor coupling; 2) via the spin and like-spin degrees of freedom we can simultaneously make use of electric and magnetic field strengths to orientate an electron; 3) not only the spin quantum states of a moving electron but also those of a motionless electron can be affected by some particular electrostatic fields.

On the Harmonic approximation for large Josephson junction coupling charge qubits

We revisit the harmonic approximation (HA) for a large Josephson junction interacting with some charge qubits through the variational approach for the quantum dynamics of the junction-qubit coupling system. By making use of numerical calculation and analytical treatment, the conditions under which HA works well can be precisely presented to control the parameters implementing the two-qubit quantum logical gate through the couplings to the large junction with harmonic oscillator (HO) Hamiltonian.

XMM-Newton (cross)-calibration

ESA's large X-ray space observatory XMM-Newton is in its fifth year of operations. We give a general overview of the status of calibration of the five X-ray instruments and the Optical Monitor. A main point of interest in the last year became the cross-calibration between the instruments. A cross-calibration campaign started at the XMM-Newton Science Operation Centre at the European Space Astronomy Centre in collaboration with the Instrument Principle Investigators provides a first systematic comparison of the X-ray instruments EPIC and RGS for various kind of sources making also an initial assessment in cross calibration with other X-ray observatories.

Quantum state transmission via a spin ladder as a robust data bus

We explore the physical mechanism to coherently transfer the quantum information of spin by connecting two spins to an isotropic antiferromagnetic spin ladder system as data bus. Due to a large spin gap existing in such a perfect medium, the effective Hamiltonian of the two connected spins can be archived as that of Heisenberg type, which possesses a ground state with maximal entanglement. We show that the effective coupling strength is inversely proportional to the distance of the two spins and thus the quantum information can be transferred between the two spins separated by a longer distance, i.e. the characteristic time of quantum state transferring linearly depends on the distance.

Time in Quantum Mechanics and Quantum Field Theory

W. Pauli pointed out that the existence of a self-adjoint time operator is incompatible with the semibounded character of the Hamiltonian spectrum. As a result, people have been arguing a lot about the time-energy uncertainty relation and other related issues. In this article, we show in details that Pauli's definition of time operator is erroneous in several respects.

Exploratory Chandra Observations of the Three Highest Redshift Quasars Known

We report on exploratory Chandra observations of the three highest redshift quasars known (z = 5.82, 5.99, and 6.28), all found in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. These data, combined with a previous XMM-Newton observation of a z = 5.74 quasar, form a complete set of color-selected, z > 5.7 quasars. X-ray emission is detected from all of the quasars at levels that indicate that the X-ray to optical flux ratios of z ~ 6 optically selected quasars are similar to those of lower redshift quasars. The observations demonstrate that it will be feasible to obtain quality X-ray spectra of z ~ 6 quasars with current and future X-ray missions.

The u'g'r'i'z' Standard Star Network

We present the 158 standard stars that define the u'g'r'i'z' photometric system. These stars form the basis for the photometric calibration of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The defining instrument system and filters, the observing process, the reduction techniques, and the software used to create the stellar network are all described. We briefly discuss the history of the star selection process, the derivation of a set of transformation equations for the UBVRcIc system, and plans for future work.

LOTIS, Super-LOTIS, SDSS and Tautenburg Observations of GRB 010921

We present multi-instrument optical observations of the High Energy Transient Explorer (HETE-2)/Interplanetary Network (IPN) error box of GRB 010921. This event was the first gamma ray burst (GRB) localized by HETE-2 which has resulted in the detection of an optical afterglow. In this paper we report the earliest known observations of the GRB010921 field, taken with the 0.11-m Livermore Optical Transient Imaging System (LOTIS) telescope, and the earliest known detection of the GRB010921 optical afterglow, using the 0.5-m Sloan Digital Sky Survey Photometric Telescope (SDSS PT). Observations with the LOTIS telescope began during a routine sky patrol 52 minutes after the burst. Observations were made with the SDSS PT, the 0.6-m Super-LOTIS telescope, and the 1.34-m Tautenburg Schmidt telescope at 21.3, 21.8, and 37.5 hours after the GRB, respectively. In addition, the host galaxy was observed with the USNOFS 1.0-m telescope 56 days after the burst. We find that at later times (t > 1 day after the burst), the optical afterglow exhibited a power-law decline with a slope of $α= 1.75 \pm 0.28$. However, our earliest observations show that this power-law decline can not have extended to early times (t < 0.035 day).

A New Very Cool White Dwarf Discovered by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey

Early data taken during commissioning of the SDSS have resulted in the discovery of a very cool white dwarf. It appears to have stronger collision induced absorption from molecular hydrogen than any other known white dwarf, suggesting it has a cooler temperature than any other. While its distance is presently unknown, it has a surprisingly small proper motion, making it unlikely to be a halo star. An analysis of white dwarf cooling times suggests that this object may be a low-mass star with a helium core. The SDSS imaging and spectroscopy also recovered LHS 3250, the coolest previously known white dwarf, indicating that the SDSS will be an effective tool for identifying these extreme objects.
