Translational and rotational Brownian displacements of colloidal particles of complex shapes

The exact analytical expressions for the time-dependent cross-correlations of the translational and rotational Brownian displacements of a particle with arbitrary shape were derived by us in [J. Chem. Phys. 142, 214902 (2015) and 144, 076101 (2016)]. They are in this work applied to construct a method to analyze Brownian motion of a particle of an arbitrary shape, and to extract accurately the self-diffusion matrix from the measurements of the cross-correlations, which in turn allows to gain some information on the particle structure. As an example, we apply our new method to analyze the experimental results of D. J. Kraft et al. for the micrometer-sized aggregates of the beads [Phys. Rev. E 88, 050301 (R) (2013)]. We explicitly demonstrate that our procedure, based on the measurements of the time-dependent cross-correlations in the whole range of times, allows to determine the self diffusion (or alternatively the friction matrix) with a much higher precision than the method based only on their initial slopes. Therefore, the analytical time-dependence of the cross-correlations serves as a useful tool to extract information about particle structure from trajectory measurements.

Thermodynamic coherence of the Variational Average-Atom in Quantum Plasmas (VAAQP) approach

A new code called VAAQP (Variational Average-Atom in Quantum Plasmas) is reported. The model as well as main results of previous studies are briefly recalled. The code is based on a new fully variational model of dense plasmas at equilibrium with quantum treatment of all electrons. The code can calculate the Average Atom structure and the mean ionization from the variational equations respecting the virial theorem and without imposing the neutrality of the Wigner-Seitz sphere. The formula obtained for the electronic pressure is simple and does not require any numerical differentiation. A description of the principal features of the code is given. The thermodynamic consistency of the results obtained with VAAQP is shown by a comparison with another approach on the example of the aluminium 10 eV isotherm EOS curve. A first comparison to an INFERNO-type model is also presented.

The short-time self-diffusion coefficient of a sphere in a suspension of rigid rods

The short--time self diffusion coefficient of a sphere in a suspension of rigid rods is calculated in first order in the rod volume fraction. For low rod concentrations the correction to the Einstein diffusion constant of the sphere is a linear function of the rod volume fraction with the slope proportional to the equilibrium averaged mobility diminution trace of the sphere interacting with a single freely translating and rotating rod. The two--body hydrodynamic interactions are calculated using the so--called bead model in which the rod is replaced by a stiff linear chain of touching spheres. The interactions between spheres are calculated numerically using the multipole method. Also an analytical expression for the diffusion coefficient as a function of the rod aspect ratio is derived in the limit of very long rods. We show that in this limit the correction to the Einstein diffusion constant does not depend on the size of the tracer sphere. The higher order corrections depending on the applied model are computed numerically. An approximate expression is provided, valid for a wide range of aspect ratios.

Variational Average-Atom in Quantum Plasmas (VAAQP) - first numerical results

The work on a new fully variational model of average-atom in quantum plasmas using a numerical code called VAAQP is reported. A brief description of the code is given. Application to aluminium at solid density and temperatures between 0.05 and 12 eV is presented. Comparisons to results obtained using other approaches are also shown and discussed. The results prove the feasibility of the variational model in the warm dense matter regime. Effects of the variational treatment can lead in this region to significant differences with respect to existing models.

Diagrammatic approach to response problems in composite systems

The bulk macroscopic response of a system of particles or inclusions with field-induced forces is studied. The susceptibilities and transport coefficients in such a system are expressed as averages of a multiple scattering expansion. A special diagrammatic method is developed to analyze the structure of the expansion. The concept of irreducibility is discussed in detail and shown to be crucial in obtaining macroscopic equations characterizing the system response with coefficients depending solely on local properties of the medium. Due to the representation of particles by lines in diagrams, irreducibility is given a particularly simple topological interpretation in the diagrammatic language. The method is illustrated by a discussion of response problems in colloidal suspensions in presence of hydrodynamic interactions.
