Application of the S=1 underscreened Anderson lattice model to Kondo uranium and neptunium compounds

Magnetic properties of uranium and neptunium compounds showing the coexistence of Kondo screening effect and ferromagnetic order are investigated within the Anderson lattice Hamiltonian with a two-fold degenerate $f$-level in each site, corresponding to $5f^2$ electronic configuration with $S=1$ spins. A derivation of the Schrieffer-Wolff transformation is presented and the resulting Hamiltonian has an effective $f$-band term, in addition to the regular exchange Kondo interaction between the $S=1$ $f$-spins and the $s=1/2$ spins of the conduction electrons. The obtained effective Kondo lattice model can describe both the Kondo regime and a weak delocalization of $5f$-electron. Within this model we compute the Kondo and Curie temperatures as a function of model parameters, namely the Kondo exchange interaction constant $J_K$, the magnetic intersite exchange interaction $J_H$ and the effective $f$-bandwidth. We deduce, therefore, a phase diagram of the model which yields the coexistence of Kondo effect and ferromagnetic ordering and also accounts for the pressure dependence of the Curie temperature of uranium compounds such as UTe.

A van Hemmen-Kondo model for disordered strongly correlated electron systems

We present here a theoretical model in order to describe the competition between the Kondo effect and the spin glass behavior. The spin glass part of the starting Hamiltonian contains Ising spins with an intersite exchange interaction given by the local van Hemmen model, while the Kondo effect is described as usual by the intrasite exchange $J_K$. We obtain, for large $J_K$ values, a Kondo phase and, for smaller $J_K$ values, a succession, with decreasing

A theoretical study of the cluster glass-Kondo-magnetic disordered alloys

The physics of disordered alloys, such as typically the well known case of CeNi1-xCux alloys, showing an interplay among the Kondo effect, the spin glass state and a magnetic order, has been studied firstly within an average description like in the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model. Recently, a theoretical model (PRB 74, 014427 (2006)) involving a more local description of the intersite interaction has been proposed to describe the phase diagram of CeNi1-xCux. This alloy is an example of the complex interplay between Kondo effect and frustration in which there is in particular the onset of a cluster-glass state. Although the model given in Ref. PRB 74, 014427 (2006) has reproduced the different phases relatively well, it is not able to describe the cluster-glass state. We study here the competition between the Kondo effect and a cluster glass phase within a Kondo Lattice model with an inter-cluster random Gaussian interaction. The inter-cluster term is treated within the cluster mean-field theory for spin glasses, while, inside the cluster, an exact diagonalisation is performed including inter-site ferromagnetic and intra-site Kondo interactions. The cluster glass order parameters and the Kondo correlation function are obtained for different values of the cluster size, the intra-cluster ferromagnetic coupling and the Kondo intra-site coupling. We obtain, for instance, that the increase of the Kondo coupling tends to destroy the cluster glass phase.

The underscreened Kondo lattice model applied to heavy fermion uranium compounds

We present theoretical results for the underscreened Kondo lattice model with localized S=1 spins coupled to a conduction band through a Kondo coupling, $J_K$, and interacting among them ferromagnetically. We use a fermionic representation for the spin operators and expand the Hamiltonian in terms of bosonic fields. For large values of $J_K$, we obtain a ferromagnetically ordered solution and a Kondo regime with a Kondo temperature, $T_K$, larger than the Curie temperature, $T_C$. This finding suggests a scenario for a coexistence of Kondo effect and ferromagnetic order. In some uranium compounds, like $UTe$ or $UCu_{0.9}Sb_{2}$, this kind of coexistence has been experimentally observed: they order ferromagnetically with a Curie temperature of order $T_C \sim 100K$ and exhibit a Kondo behavior for $T > T_C$. The proposed underscreened Kondo lattice model accounts well for the coexistence between magnetic order and Kondo behavior and yields to a new ``ferromagnetic Doniach diagram''.

Doniach diagram for ordered, disordered and underscreened Kondo lattices

The Doniach's diagram has been originally proposed to describe the competition between the local Kondo effect and the intersite RKKY interactions in cerium compounds. Here we discuss the extension of this diagram to different variations of Kondo lattice model. We consider a) ordered cerium compounds where the competition between magnetic order and Kondo effect plays an important role, as $CeRh_2Si_2$, b) disordered cerium systems with competing spin glass phase, magnetic ordered phases and a Kondo phase, as the heavy fermion cerium alloy $CeCu_xNi_{1-x}$ and, c) uranium compounds where a coexistence between Kondo effect and ferromagnetic order has been observed, as UTe. We show that all these cases can be described by a generalized Doniach phase diagram.

Coexistence of ferromagnetism and Kondo effect in uranium compounds

Coexistence between ferromagnetic order and Kondo behavior has been observed in some uranium compounds. The underscreened Kondo lattice model can provide a possible description of this coexistence. Here we present a model of a lattice of S=1 spins coupled to the conduction electrons through an intra-site exchange interaction $J_{K}$ and an inter-site ferromagnetic exchange $f-f$ interaction $J_{H}$. Finite temperature results show that the Kondo temperature is larger than the Curie ordering temperature, $T_{C}$, providing a possible scenario for the coexistence of Kondo effect and magnetic order. Also, the Kondo behavior disappears abruptly for low values of $J_{K}$ and smoothly when changing the band occupation. These results are in qualitative agreement with the experimental situation for the above mentioned uranium compounds.

Spin Glass and ferromagnetism in disordered Cerium compounds

The competition between spin glass, ferromagnetism and Kondo effect is analysed here in a Kondo lattice model with an inter-site random coupling $J_{ij}$ between the localized magnetic moments given by a generalization of the Mattis model which represents an interpolation between ferromagnetism and a highly disordered spin glass. Functional integral techniques with Grassmann fields have been used to obtain the partition function. The static approximation and the replica symmetric ansatz have also been used. The solution of the problem is presented as a phase diagram giving $T/{J}$ {\it versus} $J_K/J$ where $T$ is the temperature, $J_{K}$ and ${J}$ are the strengths of the intrasite Kondo and the intersite random couplings, respectively. If $J_K/{J}$ is small, when temperature is decreased, there is a second order transition from a paramagnetic to a spin glass phase. For lower $T/{J}$, a first order transition appears between the spin glass phase and a region where there are Mattis states which are thermodynamically equivalent to the ferromagnetism. For very low ${T/{J}}$, the Mattis states become stable. On the other hand, it is found as solution a Kondo state for large $J_{K}/{J}$ values. These results can improve the theoretical description of the well known experimental phase diagram of $CeNi_{1-x}Cu_{x}$.

Quantum critical point in the spin glass-antiferromagnetism competition in Kondo-lattice systems

A theory is proposed to describe the competition among antiferromagnetism (AF), spin glass (SG) and Kondo effect. The model describes two Kondo sublattices with an intrasite Kondo interaction strength $J_{K}$ and an interlattice quantum Ising interaction in the presence of a transverse field $Γ$. The interlattice coupling is a random Gaussian distributed variable (with average $-2J_0/N$ and variance $32 J^{2}/N$) while the $Γ$ field is introduced as a quantum mechanism to produce spin flipping. The path integral formalism is used to study this fermionic problem where the spin operators are represented by bilinear combinations of Grassmann fields. The disorder is treated within the framework of the replica trick. The free energy and the order parameters of the problem are obtained by using the static ansatz and by choosing both $J_0/J$ and $Γ/J \approx (J_k/J)^2$ to allow, as previously, a better comparison with the experimental findings. The results indicate the presence of a SG solution at low $J_K/J$ and for temperature $T<T_{f}$ ($T_{f}$ is the freezing temperature). When $J_K/J$ is increased, a mixed phase AF+SG appears, then an AF solution and finally a Kondo state is obtained for high values of $J_{K}/J$. Moreover, the behaviors of the freezing and Neel temperatures are also affected by the relationship between $J_{K}$ and the transverse field $Γ$. The first one presents a slight decrease while the second one decreases towards a Quantum Critical Point (QCP). The obtained phase diagram has the same sequence as the experimental one for $Ce_{2}Au_{1-x}Co_{x}Si_{3}$, if $J_{K}$ is assumed to increase with $x$, and in addition, it also shows a qualitative agreement concerning the behavior of the freezing and the Neel temperatures.

The spin glass-antiferromagnetism competition in Kondo-lattice systems in the presence of a transverse applied magnetic field

A theory is proposed to describe the competition among antiferromagnetism (AF), spin glass (SG) and Kondo effect. The model describes two Kondo sublattices with an intrasite Kondo interaction strength $J_{K}$ and a random Gaussian interlattice interaction in the presence of a transverse field $Γ$. The $Γ$ field is introduced as a quantum mechanism to produce spin flipping and the random coupling has average $-2J_0/N$ and variance $32 J^{2}/N$. The path integral formalism with Grassmann fields is used to study this fermionic problem, in which the disorder is treated within the framework of the replica trick. The free energy and the order parameters are obtained using the static ansatz. In this many parameters problem, we choose $J_0/J \approx (J_{K}/J)^{2}$ and $Γ/J \approx (J_{K}/J)^{2}$ to allow a better comparison with the experimental findings. The obtained phase diagram has not only the same sequence as the experimental one for $Ce_{2}Au_{1-x}Co_{x}Si_{3}$, but mainly, it also shows a qualitative agreement concerning the behavior of the freezing temperature and the Neel temperature which decreases until a Quantum Critical Point (QCP).

High-pressure transport properties of CeRu_2Ge_2

The pressure-induced changes in the temperature-dependent thermopower S(T) and electrical resistivity ρ(T) of CeRu_2Ge_2 are described within the single-site Anderson model. The Ce-ions are treated as impurities and the coherent scattering on different Ce-sites is neglected. Changing the hybridisation Γbetween the 4f-states and the conduction band accounts for the pressure effect. The transport coefficients are calculated in the non-crossing approximation above the phase boundary line. The theoretical S(T) and ρ(T) curves show many features of the experimental data. The seemingly complicated temperature dependence of S(T) and ρ(T), and their evolution as a function of pressure, is related to the crossovers between various fixed points of the model.

Quantum Critical Point in the Spin Glass-Kondo Transition in Heavy Fermion Systems

The Kondo-Spin Glass competition is studied in a theoretical model of a Kondo lattice with an intra-site Kondo type exchange interaction treated within the mean field approximation, an inter-site quantum Ising exchange interaction with random couplings among localized spins and an additional transverse field in the x direction, which represents a simple quantum mechanism of spin flipping. We obtain two second order transition lines from the spin-glass state to the paramagnetic one and then to the Kondo state. For a reasonable set of the different parameters, the two second order transition lines do not intersect and end in two distinct QCP.

Spin Glass and antiferromagnetism in Kondo lattice disordered systems

The competition between spin glass (SG), antiferromagnetism (AF) and Kondo effect is studied here in a model which consists of two Kondo sublattices with a gaussian random interaction between spins in differents sublattices with an antiferromagnetic mean Jo and standard deviation J. In the present approach there is no hopping of the conduction electrons between the sublattices and only spins in different sublattices can interact. The problem is formulated in the path integral formalism where the spin operators are expressed as bilinear combinations of Grassmann fields which can be solved at mean field level within the static approximation and the replica symmetry ansatz. The obtained phase diagram shows the sequence of phases SG, AF and Kondo state for increasing Kondo coupling. This sequence agrees qualitatively with experimental data of the Ce_{2} Au_{1-x} Co_{x} Si_{3} compound.

Band-filling effects on the Kondo-lattice properties

We present theoretical results for a Kondo-lattice model with spin-1/2 localized moments, including both the intrasite Kondo coupling and an intersite antiferromagnetic exchange interaction, treated within an extended mean-field approximation. We describe here the case of a non-integer conduction-band filling for which an ``exhaustion'' problem arises when the number of conduction electrons is not large enough to screen all the lattice spins. This is best seen in the computed magnetic susceptibility. The Kondo temperature so obtained is different from the single-impurity one, and increases for small values of the intersite interaction, but the Kondo-effect disappears abruptly for low band filling and/or strong intersite coupling; a phase diagram is presented as a function of both parameters. A discussion of experimental results on cerium Kondo compounds is also given.

Spin Glass and Ferromagnetism in Kondo lattices compounds

The Kondo lattice model has been analyzed in the presence of a random inter-site interaction among localized spins with non zero mean Jo and standard deviation J. Following the same framework previously introduced by us, the problem is formulated in the path integral formalism where the spin operators are expressed as bilinear combinations of Grassmann fields. The static approximation and the replica symmetry ansatz have allowed us to solve the problem at a mean field level. The resulting phase diagram displays several phase transitions among a ferromagnetically ordered region,a spin glass one, a mixed phase and a Kondo state depending on Jo, J and its relation with the Kondo interaction coupling Jk. These results could be used to address part of the experimental data for the CeNi_{1-x}Cu_x compound, when x =< 0.8.

Thermoelectric power of Cerium and Ytterbium intermetallics

Temperature dependence S(T) of the thermoelectric power of metallic systems with cerium and ytterbium ions exhibits some characteristic features, which can be used to classify these systems into distinct categories. The experimental data are explained by the Kondo scattering in the presence of the crystal field splitting and various shapes of S(T) are related to different Kondo scales that characterize Ce and Yb ions at different temperatures. The low- and high-temperature behaviors are calculated for different fixed point models and the overall shape of S(T) is obtained by interpolation. At high temperatures, we use the Coqblin-Schrieffer model and calculate S(T) by perturbation expansion with renormalized coupling constants. The renormalization is performed by the 'poor man's scaling'. At low temperatures, we describe the dilute Ce and Yb alloys by an effective spin-degenerate single-impurity Anderson model, and the stoichiometric compounds by an effective spin-degenerate periodic Anderson model. The parameters of these low-temperature models are such that their effective Kondo scale coincides with the lowest Kondo scale of the Coqblin-Schrieffer model. The interpolation between the results obtained for the Anderson model and the Coqblin-Schrieffer model explains the overall thermoelectric properties of most Ce and Yb intermetallics.

Spin glass freezing in Kondo lattice compounds

It is presented a theory that describes a spin glass phase at finite temperatures in Kondo lattice systems with an additional RKKY interaction represented by long range, random couplings among localized spins like in the Sherrington- Kirkpatrick (SK) spin glass model. The problem is studied within the functional integral formalism where the spin operators are represented by bilinear combinations of fermionic (anticommuting) Grassmann variables. The Kondo and spin glass transitions are both described with the mean field like static ansatz that reproduces good results in the two well known limits. At high temperatures and low values of the Kondo coupling there is a paramagnetic (disordered) phase with vanishing Kondo and spin glass order parameters. By lowering the temperature a second order transition line is found at Tsg to a spin glass phase. For larger values of the Kondo coupling there is a second order transition line at roughly Tk to a Kondo ordered state. For T<Tsg the transition between the Kondo and spin glass phases becomes first order.

The underscreened Kondo effect: a two S=1 impurity model

The underscreened Kondo effect is studied within a model of two impurities S=1 interacting with the conduction band and via an interimpurity coupling $K\vec{S_1}.\vec{S_2}$. Using a mean-field treatment of the bosonized Hamiltonian, we show that there is no phase transition, but a continuous cross-over versus K from a non Kondo behaviour to an underscreened Kondo one. For a small antiferromagnetic coupling (K>0), a completely asymmetric situation is obtained with one s=${1/2}$ component strongly screened by the Kondo effect and the other one almost free to yield indirect magnetism, which shows finally a possible coexistence between a RKKY interaction and a local Kondo effect, as observed in Uranium compounds such as $UPt_3$.
