RQM description of PS meson form factors, constraints from space-time translations, and underlying dynamics

The role of Poincaré covariant space-time translations is investigated in the case of the pseudoscalar-meson charge form factors. It is shown that this role extends beyond the standard energy-momentum conservation, which is accounted for in all relativistic quantum mechanics calculations. It implies constraints that have been largely ignored until now but should be fulfilled to ensure the full Poincaré covariance. The violation of these constraints, which is more or less important depending on the form of relativistic quantum mechanics that is employed, points to the validity of using a single-particle current, which is generally assumed in calculations of form factors. In short, these constraints concern the relation of the momentum transferred to the constituents to the one transferred to the system. How to account for the related constraints, as well as restoring the equivalence of different relativistic quantum mechanics approaches in estimating form factors, is discussed. Some conclusions relative to the underlying dynamics are given in the pion case.

Form factors in relativistic quantum mechanics: constraints from space-time translations

The comparison of form factors calculated from a single-particle current in different relativistic quantum mechanic approaches evidences tremendous discrepancies. The role of constraints coming from space-time translations is considered here with this respect. It is known that invariance under these translations implies the energy-momentum conservation relation that is usually assumed to hold globally. Transformations of the current under these translations, which lead to this result, also imply constraints that have been ignored so far in relativistic quantum mechanic approaches. An implementation of these constraints is discussed in the case of a model with two scalar constituents. It amounts to incorporate selected two-body currents to all orders in the interaction. Discrepancies for form factors in different approaches can thus be removed, contributing to restore the equivalence of different approaches. Results for the standard front-form approach ($q^+=0$) are found to fulfill the constraints and are therefore unchanged. The relation with results from a dispersion-relation approach is also made.

Parity-violating nucleon-nucleon interaction from different approaches

Two-pion exchange parity-violating nucleon-nucleon interactions from recent effective field theories and earlier fully covariant approaches are investigated. The potentials are compared with the idea to obtain better insight on the role of low-energy constants appearing in the effective field theory approach and the convergence of this one in terms of a perturbative series. The results are illustrated by considering the longitudinal asymmetry of polarized protons scattering off protons, $\vec{p}+p -> p+p$, and the asymmetry of the photon emission in radiative capture of polarized neutrons by protons, $\vec{n}+p -> d+γ$.

The old and the new of parity-violating two-pion-exchange $NN$ potential

We consider the parity-violating two-pion-exchange potential obtained from the covariant formalism in the past and the state-of-the-art effective field theory approach. We discuss the behavior of the potential in coordinate space and its application to the parity-violating asymmetry in $\vec{n} p \to d γ$ at threshold.

Form factors in relativistic quantum mechanics: Is there a favored approach? Why?

Form factors of a simple system have been calculated in various forms of relativistic quantum mechanics, using a single-particle current. Their comparison has shown large discrepancies. The comparison is extended here to instant- and front-form calculations in unusual momentum configurations as well as to a point-form approach inspired from the Dirac's one (based on a hyperboloid surface). It is found that these new results depend on the momentum transfer, Q, through its ratio to the total mass, Q/M, (closely related to the Breit-frame velocity of the system). They evidence features similar for a part to those shown by an earlier ``point-form'' implementation (based on hyperplanes perpendicular to the velocity of the initial and final states). It thus appears that the standard instant- and front-form calculations, which generally do well compared either to experiment or to predictions of a theoretical model, rather represent exceptional cases. An argument explaining the success of these last approaches is presented and discussed. It is based on transformations of currents under Poincaré space-time translations, going beyond the energy-momentum conservation property which results from the Lagrangian invariance under them. Depending on the approach, analytic or approximate numerical methods are proposed to correct form factors for missing constraints then expected.

Hadronic parity violation in $\vec{n} p \to d γ$ with effective field theory

The parity-violating nucleon-nucleon (NN) potential is considered up to next-to-next-to leading order in heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory. We include one-pion exchange at leading order and the two-pion exchange and two-nucleon contact terms at next-to-next-to-leading order. The effects of intermediate (two-pion exchange) and short-range (two-nucleon contact) terms are probed by calculating the photon asymmetry $A_γ$ in $\vec{n} p \to d γ$ employing Siegert's theorem and an accurate phenomenological potential for the parity-conserving NN interaction. We explore in detail the uncertainties due to the parameters that control the contribution of the short-range interaction. We obtain about 20% uncertainty in the value of $A_γ$ up to the next-to-next-to leading order. We discuss the implication of this uncertainty for the determination of the weak pion-nucleon coupling constant and how the uncertainty can be reduced.

Parity violation and the nature of charges

The origin of parity violation in physics is still unknown. At the present time, it is introduced in the theory by requiring that the SU(2) subgroup entering the description of interactions involves the left components. In the present contribution, one elaborates upon a suggestion made by Landau that particles and antiparticles could be like "stereo-isomeric" molecules, which would naturally provides parity violation. Particles and antiparticles could thus be combinations of the parity doublets associated with a chiral symmetry realized in the Wigner-Weyl mode. Consequences of such a description and the possible problems it could raise are examined.

Properties of few-body systems in relativistic quantum mechanics and constraints from transformations under Poincaré space-time translations

Different approaches have been applied to the calculation of form factors of various hadronic systems within relativistic quantum mechanics. In a one-body current approximation, they can lead to results evidencing large discrepancies. Looking for an explanation of this spreading, it is shown that, for the largest part, these discrepancies can be related to a violation of Poincaré space-time translation invariance. Beyond energy-momentum conservation, which is generally assumed, fulfilling this symmetry implies specific relations that are generally ignored. Their relevance within the present context is discussed in detail both to explain the differences between predictions and to remove them.

Two-pion-exchange parity-violating potential and $\vec{n} p \to d γ$

We calculate the parity-violating nucleon-nucleon potential in heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory up to the next-to-next-to-leading order. The one-pion exchange comes in the leading order and the next-to-next-to-leading order consists of two-pion-exchange and the two-nucleon contact terms. In order to investigate the effect of the higher order contributions, we calculate the parity-violating asymmetry in $\vec{n} p \to d γ$ at the threshold. The one-pion dominates the physical observable and the two-pion contribution is about or less than 10% of the one-pion contribution.

Parity Nonconservation in Elastic $\vec{p} p$ Scattering

By looking at the parity-nonconserving (PNC) asymmetries at different energies in $\vec{p} p$ scattering, it is in principle possible to determine the PNC $ρNN$ and $ωNN$ couplings of a single-meson-exchange model of the PNC $NN$ force. The analysis of the experimental data at 13.6, 45 and 221 MeV simultaneously has been performed by Carlson \textit{et al.}, who concluded to an agreement with the original DDH estimates for the PNC meson-nucleon couplings. In this work, it is shown first that the comparison with updated hadronic predictions of these couplings rather suggests the existence of some discrepancy for the PNC $ωNN$ coupling. The effect of variations on the strong coupling constants and introduction of cutoffs in the one-boson-exchange weak potential is then investigated. As expected, it turns out that the resulting asymmetry is quite sensitive to these parameters regardless of the energy. However the above discrepancy persists. The dependence of this conclusion on various ingredients entering an improved description of the PNC $NN$ force is also examined. These include the two-pion resonance nature of the rho meson and some momentum dependence of the isoscalar PNC $ρNN$ vertex. It is found that none of these corrections is able to remove or even alleviate the above discrepancy. Their impacts on the theoretical determination of the vector meson-nucleon couplings, the description of the PNC force in terms of single-meson exchanges, or the interpretation of measurements, are finally examined.

Form factors in relativistic quantum mechanics approaches and space-time translation invariance

Invariance of form factors under Lorentz boosts is a criterion often advocated to determine whether their estimate in a RQM framework is reliable. It is shown that verifying relations stemming from covariance properties under space-time translations could be a more important criterion. Form factors calculated in different approaches for a simple system are discussed with these various respects. An approximate method is shown to remove the main discrepancies related to a violation of the above relations.

Parity violation in $pp$ scattering and vector-meson weak-coupling constants

We calculate the parity-nonconserving longitudinal asymmetry in the elastic $\vec{p} p$ scattering at the energies where experimental data are available. In addition to the standard one-meson exchange weak potential, the variation of the strong-coupling constants and the non-standard effects such as form factors and $2 π$-exchange description of the $ρ$-exchange potential are taken into account. With the extra effects, we investigate the compatibility of the experimental data and the presently-known range of the vector-meson weak-coupling constants.

Relativistic quantum mechanics: A Dirac's point-form inspired approach

This paper describes a tentative relativistic quantum mechanics approach inspired by Dirac's point-form, which is based on the physics description on a hyperboloid surface. It is mainly characterized by a non-standard relation of the constituent momenta of some system to its total momentum. Contrary to instant- and front-form approaches, where it takes the form of a 3-dimensional delta function, the relation is given here by a Lorentz-scalar constraint. Thus, in the c.m. frame, the sum of the constituent momenta, which differs from zero off-energy shell, has no fixed direction, in accordance with the absence of preferred direction on a hyperboloid surface. To some extent, this gives rise to an extra degree of freedom entering the description of the system of interest. The development of a consistent formalism within this picture is described. Comparison with other approaches is made.

Form factors of hadronic systems in various forms of relativistic quantum mechanics

The form factor of hadronic systems in various forms of relativistic quantum mechanics is considered. Motivated by the agreement of the nucleon ``point-form'' results with experiment, results for a toy model corresponding to the simplest Feynman diagram are first presented. These ones include the results for this diagram, which plays the role of an experiment, for the front-form and instant-form in standard kinematics (q^+=0 and Breit frame), but also in unconventional kinematics and finally a Dirac's point-form inspired approach. Results for an earlier ``point-form'' approach are reminded. Results are also presented for the pion charge form factor. Conclusions as for the efficiency of various approaches are given.

Parity Nonconservation in the Photodisintegration of the Deuteron at Low Energy

The parity-nonconserving asymmetry in the deuteron photodisintegration, $\vecγ+d\to n+p$, is considered with the photon energy ranged up to 10 MeV above the threshold. The aim is to improve upon a schematic estimate assuming the absence of tensor as well as spin-orbit forces in the nucleon-nucleon interaction. The major contributions are due to the vector-meson exchanges, and the strong suppression of the pion-exchange contribution is confirmed. A simple argument, going beyond the observation of an algebraic cancellation, is presented. Contributions of meson-exchange currents are also considered, but found to be less significant.

Structures of Rotating Traditional Neutron Stars and Hyperon Stars in the Relativistic $σ-ω$ Model

The influence of the rotation on the total masses and radii of the neutron stars are calculated by the Hartle's slow rotation formalism, while the equation of state is considered in a relativistic $σ-ω$ model. Comparing with the observation, the calculating result shows that the double neutron star binaries are more like hyperon stars and the neutron stars of X-ray binaries are more like traditional neutron stars. As the changes of the mass and radius to a real neutron star caused by the rotation are very small comparing with the total mass and radius, one can see that Hartle's approximate method is rational to deal with the rotating neutron stars. If three property values: mass, radius and period are observed to the same neutron star, then the EOS of this neutron star could be decided entirely.

Deuteron Anapole Moment with Heavy Mesons

Parity-nonconserving two-body currents due to vector meson exchange are considered with the aim to determine the related contributions to the anapole moment. A particular attention is given to the requirement of current conservation which is essential for a reliable estimate of this quantity. An application is made for the deuteron case.
