Superorders and acoustic modes folding in BiFeO$_3$/LaFeO$_3$ superlattices

Superlattices are materials created by the alternating growth of two chemically different materials. The direct consequence of creating a superlattice is the folding of the Brillouin zone which gives rise to additional electronic bands and phonon modes. This has been successfully exploited to achieve new transport and optical properties in semiconductor superlattices, for example. Here, we show that multiferroic BiFeO$_3$/LaFeO$_3$ superlattices are more than just periodic chemical stacking. Using transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and first-principles calculations, we demonstrate the existence of a new order of FeO$_6$ octahedra, with a period along the growth direction about twice that of the chemical supercell, i.e. a superorder. The effect of this new structural order on the lattice dynamics is studied with ultrafast optical pump-probe experiments. While a mode at 1.2 THz is attributed solely to the chemical modulation of the superlattice, the existence of another 0.7 THz mode seems to be explained only by a double Brillouin zone folding in agreement with the structural description. Our work shows that multiferroic BiFeO$_3$/LaFeO$_3$ superlattices can be used to tune the spectrum of coherent THz phonons, and potentially that of magnons or electromagnons.

Ultrafast light-induced shear strain probed by time-resolved X-ray diffraction: the model multiferroic BiFeO$_3$ as a case study

Enabling the light-control of complex systems on ultra-short timescales gives rise to rich physics with promising applications. While crucial, the quantitative determination of both the longitudinal and shear photo-induced strains still remains challenging. Here, by scrutinizing asymmetric Bragg peaks pairs $(\pm h01)$ using picosecond time-resolved X-ray diffraction experiments in BiFeO$_3$, we simultaneously determine the longitudinal and shear strains. The relative amplitude of those strains can be explained only if both thermal and non-thermal processes contribute to the acoustic phonon photogeneration process. Importantly, we also reveal a difference of the dynamical response of the longitudinal strain with respect to the shear one due to an interplay of quasi-longitudinal and quasi-transverse acoustic modes, well reproduced by our model.

Switching on superferromagnetism

Recent results in electric-field control of magnetism have paved the way for the design of alternative magnetic and spintronic devices with enhanced functionalities and low power consumption. Among the diversity of reported magnetoelectric effects, the possibility of switching on and off long-range ferromagnetic ordering close to room temperature stands out. Its binary character opens up the avenue for its implementation in magnetoelectric data storage devices. Here we show the possibility to locally switch on superferromagnetism in a wedge-shaped polycrystalline Fe thin film deposited on top of a ferroelectric and ferroelastic BaTiO3 substrate. A superparamagnetic to superferromagnetic transition is observed for confined regions for which a voltage applied to the ferroelectric substrate induces a sizable strain. We argue that electric-field-induced changes of magnetic anisotropy lead to an increase of the critical temperature separating the two regimes so that superparamagnetic regions develop collective long-range superferromagnetic behavior.

Photoferroelectric oxides

Giant photovoltaic effect due to bulk photovoltaic effect observed in multiferroic BiFeO3 thin films has triggered a renewed interest on photoferroelectric materials for photovoltaic applications. Tremendous advance has been done to improve power conversion efficiency (up to up to 8.1%) in photoferroelectrics via absorption increase using narrow bandgap ferroelectrics. Other strategies, as it is the more efficient use of ferroelectric internal electric field, are ongoing. Moreover, as a by-product, several progress have been also achieved on photostriction that is the photo-induced deformation phenomenon. Here, we review ongoing and promising routes to improve ferroelectrics photoresponse.

Strain and Magnetic Field Induced Spin-Structure Transitions in Multiferroic BiFeO3

The magnetic-field-dependent spin ordering of strained BiFeO3 films is determined using nuclear resonant scattering and Raman spectroscopy. The critical field required to destroy the cycloidal modulation of the Fe spins is found to be significantly lower than in the bulk, with appealing implications for field-controlled spintronic and magnonic devices.

Spin and lattice excitations of a BiFeO3 thin film and ceramics

We present a comprehensive study of polar and magnetic excitations in BiFeO3 ceramics and a thin film epitaxially grown on an orthorhombic (110) TbScO3 substrate. Infrared reflectivity spectroscopy was performed at temperatures from 5 to 900 K for the ceramics and below room temperature for the thin film. All 13 polar phonons allowed by the factor-group analysis were observed in theceramic samples. The thin-film spectra revealed 12 phonon modes only and an additional weak excitation, probably of spin origin. On heating towards the ferroelectric phase transition near 1100 K, some phonons soften, leading to an increase in the static permittivity. In the ceramics, terahertz transmission spectra show five low-energy magnetic excitations including two which were not previously known to be infrared active; at 5 K, their frequencies are 53 and 56 cm-1. Heating induces softening of all magnetic modes. At a temperature of 5 K, applying an external magnetic field of up to 7 T irreversibly alters the intensities of some of these modes. The frequencies of the observed spin excitations provide support for the recently developed complex model of magnetic interactions in BiFeO3 (R.S. Fishman, Phys. Rev. B 87, 224419 (2013)). The simultaneous infrared and Raman activity of the spin excitations is consistent with their assignment to electromagnons.

Effect of polarization fatigue on the Rayleigh coefficients of ferroelectric lead zirconate titanate thin films: experimental evidence and implications

The effect of polarization fatigue on the Rayleigh coefficients of ferroelectric lead zirconate titanate (PZT) thin film was systematically investigated. It was found that electrical fatigue strongly affects the Rayleigh behaviour of the PZT film. Both the reversible and irreversible Rayleigh coefficients decrease with increasing the number of switching cycles. This phenomenon is attributed to the growth of an interfacial degraded layer between the electrode and the film during electrical cycling. The methodology used in this work could serve as an alternative non-destructive way for evaluating the fatigue endurance and degradation in dielectric properties of ferroelectric thin-film devices during applications.

Storing magnetic information in IrMn/MgO/Ta tunnel junctions via field-cooling

Tunneling junctions containing no ferromagnetic elements have been fabricated and we show that distinct resistance states can be set by field cooling the devices from above the Néel along different orientations. Variations of the resistance up to 10% are found upon field cooling in applied fields of 2T, in-plane or out of plane. Below TN, we found that the metastable states are insensitive to magnetic fields thus constituting a memory element robust against external magnetic fields. Our work provides the demonstration of an electrically readable magnetic memory device, which contains no ferromagnetic elements and stores the information in an antiferromagnetic active layer.

Magnetodielectric coupling and phonon properties of compressively strained EuTiO3 thin films deposited on LSAT

Compressively strained epitaxial (001) EuTiO3 thin films of tetragonal symmetry have been deposited on (001) (LaAlO3)_0.29-(SrAl_{1/2}Ta_{1/2}O3)_0.71 (LSAT) substrates by reactive molecular-beam epitaxy. Enhancement of the Neel temperature by 1 K with 0.9% compressive strain was revealed. The polar phonons ofthe films have been investigated as a function of temperature and magnetic field by means of infrared reflectance spectroscopy. All three infrared active phonons show strongly stiffened frequencies compared to bulk EuTiO3 in accordance with first principles calculations. The phonon frequencies exhibit gradual softening on cooling leading to an increase in static permittivity. A new polar phonon with frequency near the TO1 soft mode was detected below 150 K. The new mode coupled with the TO1 mode was assigned as the optical phonon from the Brillouin zone edge, which is activated in infrared spectra due to an antiferrodistortive phase transition and due to simultaneous presence of polar and/or magnetic nanoclusters. In the antiferromagnetic phase we have observed a remarkable softening of the lowest-frequency polar phonon under an applied magnetic field, which qualitatively agrees with first principles calculations. This demonstrates the strong spin-phonon coupling in EuTiO3, which is responsible for the pronounced dependence of its static permittivity on magnetic field in the antiferromagnetic phase.

Surface phase transitions in BiFeO3 below room temperature

We combine a wide variety of experimental techniques to analyze two heretofore mysterious phase transitions in multiferroic bismuth ferrite at low temperature. Raman spectroscopy, resonant ultrasound spectroscopy, EPR, X-ray lattice constant measurements, conductivity and dielectric response, specific heat and pyroelectric data have been collected for two different types of samples: single crystals and, in order to maximize surface/volume ratio to enhance surface phase transition effects, BiFeO3 nanotubes were also studied. The transition at T=140.3K is shown to be a surface phase transition, with an associated sharp change in lattice parameter and charge density at the surface. Meanwhile, the 201K anomaly appears to signal the onset of glassy behaviour.

Multiferroic phase transition near room temperature in BiFeO3 films

In multiferroic BiFeO3 thin films grown on highly mismatched LaAlO3 substrates, we reveal the coexistence of two differently distorted polymorphs that leads to striking features in the temperature dependence of the structural and multiferroic properties. Notably, the highly distorted phase quasi-concomitantly presents an abrupt structural change, transforms from a hard to a soft ferroelectric and transitions from antiferromagnetic to paramagnetic at 360+/-20 K. These coupled ferroic transitions just above room temperature hold promises of giant piezoelectric, magnetoelectric and piezomagnetic responses, with potential in many applications fields.

Phase transitions and ferroelectrics: revival and the future in the field

It appeared worthwhile to us to present a state-of-the-art look at the field of ferroelectrics. We are certainly not attempting to provide a complete review of all aspects of the field of ferroelectrics over the last years but we wish to transport a flavour of the current excitement in the field through the (subjective) choice of four specific examples of current interest: (i) Piezoelectrics and the morphotropic phase boundary, (ii) Multiferroics, (iii) The effect of high pressure on ferroelectrics and (iv) Strain-engineering in ferroelectric oxide thin films. For each topic we will try to work out both current interesting approaches and an outlook into future challenges. Throughout our discussion, the reader is referred to a list of significant review articles, books and papers in the field.

Effect of high pressure on multiferroic BiFeO3

We report experimental evidence for pressure instabilities in the model multiferroic BiFeO3 and namely reveal two structural phase transitions around 3 GPa and 10 GPa by using diffraction and far-infrared spectroscopy at a synchrotron source. The intermediate phase from 3 to 9 GPa crystallizes in a monoclinic space group, with octahedra tilts and small cation displacements. When the pressure is further increased the cation displacements (and thus the polar character) of BiFeO3 is suppressed above 10 GPa. The above 10 GPa observed non-polar orthorhombic Pnma structure is in agreement with recent theoretical ab-initio prediction, while the intermediate monoclinic phase was not predicted theoretically.

Low temperature and high pressure Raman and x-ray studies of pyrochlore Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ : phonon anomalies and possible phase transition

We have carried out temperature and pressure-dependent Raman and x-ray measurements on single crystals of Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$. We attribute the observed anomalous temperature dependence of phonons to phonon-phonon anharmonic interactions. The quasiharmonic and anharmonic contributions to the temperature-dependent changes in phonon frequencies are estimated quantitatively using mode Grüneisen parameters derived from pressure-dependent Raman experiments and bulk modulus from high pressure x-ray measurements. Further, our Raman and x-ray data suggest a subtle structural deformation of the pyrochlore lattice at $\sim$ 9 GPa. We discuss possible implications of our results on the spin-liquid behaviour of Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$.

Phenomenological theory of phase transitions in epitaxial BaxSr(1-x)TiO3 thin films

A phenomenological thermodynamic theory of BaxSr(1-x)TiO3 (BST-x) thin films epitaxially grown on cubic substrates is developed using the Landau-Devonshire approach. The eighth-order thermodynamic potential for BT single crystal and modified fourth-order potential for ST single crystal were used as starting potentials for the end-members of the solid solution with the aim to develop potential of BST-$x$ solid solution valid at high temperatures. Several coefficients of these potentials for BT were changed to obtain reasonable agreement between theory and experimental phase diagram for BST-x (x > 0.2) solid solutions. For low Ba content we constructed the specific phase diagram where five phases converge at the multiphase point (T_N2 = 47 K, x = 0.028) and all transitions are of the second order. The "concentration-misfit strain" phase diagrams for BST-x thin films at room temperature and "temperature-misfit strain" phase diagrams for particular concentrations are constructed and discussed. Near T_N2 coupling between polarization and structural order parameter in the epitaxial film is modified considerably and large number of new phases not present in the bulk materials appear on the phase diagram.

Strong enhancement of direct magnetoelectric effect in strained ferroelectric-ferromagnetic thin-film heterostructures

The direct magnetoelectric (ME) effect resulting from the polarization changes induced in a ferroelectric film by the application of a magnetic field to a ferromagnetic substrate is described using the nonlinear thermodynamic theory. It is shown that the ME response strongly depends on the initial strain state of the film. The ME polarization coefficient of the heterostructures involving Terfenol-D substrates and compressively strained lead zirconate titanate (PZT) films, which stabilize in the out-of-plane polarization state, is found to be comparable to that of bulk PZT/Terfenol-D laminate composites. At the same time, the ME voltage coefficient reaches a giant value of 50 V/(cm Oe), which greatly exceeds the maximum observed static ME coefficients of bulk composites. This remarkable feature is explained by a favorable combination of considerable strain sensitivity of polarization and a low electric permittivity in compressively strained PZT films. The theory also predicts a further dramatic increase of ME coefficients at the strain-induced transitions between different ferroelectric phases.

Spin-lattice coupling in multiferroic Pb(Fe1/2Nb1/2)O3 thin films

We have made magnetization and x-ray diffraction measurements on an epitaxial Pb(Fe1/2Nb1/2)O3 200 nm film. From the temperature dependence of the out-of-plane lattice parameter we can assign a Burns' temperature at Td ~ 640 K, a temperature at T* ~ 510 K, related to the appearance of static polar nanoregions, and an anomaly occurring at 200 K. The latter is precisely the Néel temperature TN determined from magnetization and points to spin-lattice coupling at TN ~ 200 K. We also observe "weak ferromagnetism" up to 300K and propose superantiferromagnetic clusters as a plausible scenario to explain this hysteresis above TN.

A new temperature scale T* in lead-based relaxor systems

Via a combination of various experimental and theoretical techniques, a peculiar, identical temperature scale T* is found to exist in all complex lead-based relaxor ferroelectrics. T* corresponds to a nanoscale phase transition due to random fields. Interestingly, T* also exists in other oxides with extraordinary properties, such as giant magnetoresistivity or superconductivity. By analogy with such latter systems, the giant piezoelectricity related to relaxors might originate from proximity competing states effect.
