Spectral signature of high-order photon processes enhanced by Cooper-pair pairing

Inducing interactions between individual photons is key for photonic quantum information and studying many-body photon states. Superconducting circuits are well suited to combine strong interactions with low losses. Typically, microwave photons are stored in an $LC$ oscillator shunted by a Josephson junction, where the zero-point phase fluctuations across the junction determine the strength and order of photon interactions. Most superconducting nonlinear oscillators operate with small phase fluctuations, where two-photon Kerr interactions dominate. In our experiment, we shunt a high-impedance $LC$ oscillator with a dipole element favoring the tunneling of paired Cooper pairs. This leads to large phase fluctuations of 3.4, accessing a regime where transition frequencies shift non-monotonically with excitation number. From spectroscopy, we extract two-, three-, and four-photon interaction energies, all of similar strength and exceeding the photon loss rate. Our results open a new regime of high-order photon interactions in microwave quantum optics.

Magnifying quantum phase fluctuations with Cooper-pair pairing

Remarkably, complex assemblies of superconducting wires, electrodes, and Josephson junctions are compactly described by a handful of collective phase degrees of freedom that behave like quantum particles in a potential. The inductive wires contribute a parabolic confinement, while the tunnel junctions add a cosinusoidal corrugation. Usually, the ground state wavefunction is localized within a single potential well -- that is, quantum phase fluctuations are small -- although entering the regime of delocalization holds promise for metrology and qubit protection. A direct route is to loosen the inductive confinement and let the ground state phase spread over multiple Josephson periods, but this requires a circuit impedance vastly exceeding the resistance quantum and constitutes an ongoing experimental challenge. Here we take a complementary approach and fabricate a generalized Josephson element that can be tuned in situ between one- and two-Cooper-pair tunneling, doubling the frequency of the corrugation and thereby magnifying the number of wells probed by the ground state. We measure a tenfold suppression of flux sensitivity of the first transition energy, implying a twofold increase in the vacuum phase fluctuations.

Topological Electrostatics

We present a theory of optimal topological textures in nonlinear sigma-models with degrees of freedom living in the Grassmannian $\mathrm{Gr}(M,N)$ manifold. These textures describe skyrmion lattices of $N$-component fermions in a quantising magnetic field, relevant to the physics of graphene, bilayer and other multicomponent quantum Hall systems near integer filling factors $ν>1$. We derive analytically the optimality condition, minimizing topological charge density fluctuations, for a general Grassmannian sigma model $\mathrm{Gr}(M,N)$ on a sphere and a torus, together with counting arguments which show that for any filling factor and number of components there is a critical value of topological charge $d_c$ above which there are no optimal textures. Below $d_c$ a solution of the optimality condition on a torus is unique, while in the case of a sphere one has, in general, a continuum of solutions corresponding to new {\it non-Goldstone} zero modes, whose degeneracy is not lifted (via a order from disorder mechanism) by any fermion interactions depending only on the distance on a sphere. We supplement our general theoretical considerations with the exact analytical results for the case of $\mathrm{Gr}(2,4)$, appropriate for recent experiments in graphene.

Zero point fluctuations for magnetic spirals and Skyrmions, and the fate of the Casimir energy in the continuum limit

We study the role of zero-point quantum fluctuations in a range of magnetic states which on the classical level are close to spin-aligned ferromagnets. These include Skyrmion textures characterized by non-zero topological charge, and topologically-trivial spirals arising from the competition of the Heisenberg and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions. For the former, we extend our previous results on quantum exactness of classical Bogomolny-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) ground-state degeneracies to the general case of Kähler manifolds, with a specific example of Grassmann manifolds $\mathrm{Gr(M,N)}$. These are relevant to quantum Hall ferromagnets with $\mathrm{N}$ internal states and integer filling factor $\mathrm{M}$. A promising candidate for their experimental implementation is monolayer graphene with $\mathrm{N=4}$ corresponding to spin and valley degrees of freedom at the charge neutrality point with $\mathrm{M=2}$ filled Landau levels. We find that the vanishing of the zero-point fluctuations in taking the continuum limit occurs differently in the case of BPS states compared to the case of more general smooth textures, with the latter exhibiting more pronounced lattice effects. This motivates us to consider the vanishing of zero-point fluctuations in such near-ferromagnets more generally. We present a family of lattice spin models for which the vanishing of zero-point fluctuations is evident, and show that some spirals can be thought of as having nonzero but weak zero-point fluctuations on account of their closeness to this family. Between them, these instances provide concrete illustrations of how the Casimir energy, dependent on the full UV-structure of the theory, evolves as the continuum limit is taken.

Nonadiabatic Josephson current pumping by microwave irradiation

Irradiating a Josephson junction with microwaves can operate not only on the amplitude but also on the phase of the Josephson current. This requires breaking time inversion symmetry, which is achieved by introducing a phase lapse between the microwave components acting on the two† sides of the junction. General symmetry arguments and the solution of a specific single level quantum dot model show that this induces chirality in the Cooper pair dynamics, due to the topology of the Andreev bound state wavefunction. Another essential condition is to break electron-hole symmetry within the junction. A shift of the current-phase relation is obtained, which is controllable in sign and amplitude with the microwave phase and an electrostatic gate, thus producing a "chiral" Josephson transistor. The dot model is solved in the infinite gap limit by Floquet theory and in the general case with Keldysh nonequilibrium Green's functions. The chiral current is nonadiabatic: it is extremal and changes sign close to resonant chiral transitions between the Andreev bound states.

Semi-classical Approach to Quantum Spin Ice

We propose a semi-classical description of the low-energy properties of quantum spin ice in the strong Ising limit. Within the framework of a semiclassical, perturbative Villain expansion, that can be truncated at arbitrary order, we give an analytic and quantitative treatment of the deconfining phase. We find that photon-photon interactions significantly renormalise the speed of light and split the two transverse photon polarisations at intermediate wavevectors. We calculate the photon velocity and the ground state energy to first and second order in perturbation theory, respectively. The former is in good agreement with recent numerical simulations.

Quartets and the Current-Phase Structure of a Double Quantum Dot Superconducting Bijunction at Equilibrium

The equilibrium current-phase structure of a tri-terminal superconducting Josephson junction (bijunction) is analyzed as a function of the two relevant phases. The bijunction is made of two noninteracting quantum dots, each one carrying a single level. Nonlocal processes coupling the three terminals are described in terms of quartet tunneling and pair cotunneling. These couplings are due to nonlocal Andreev and cotunneling processes through the central superconductor $S_0$, as well as direct interdot coupling. In some cases, two degenerate midgap Andreev states appear, symmetric with respect to the ($π,π$) point. The lifting of this degeneracy by interdot couplings induces a strong non-local inductance at low enough temperatures. This effect is compared to the mutual inductance of a two-loop circuit.

D.C. Josephson transport by quartets and other Andreev resonances in superconducting bijunctions

Bijunctions are three-terminal Josephson junctions where three superconductors are connected by a single weak link made of a metallic region or of quantum dots. Biasing two of the superconductors with commensurate voltages yields Andreev resonances that produce d.c. Josephson currents made of correlated Cooper pairs. For instance with applied voltages (0, V,-V), quartets formed by two entangled Cooper pairs are emitted by one reservoir towards the two others. Theory involving non-equilibrium Green's functions reveal the microsopic mechanism at play, e.g. multiple coherent Andreev reflections that provide an energy-conserving and fully coherent channel. Recent experiments on diffusive Aluminum-Copper bijunctions show transport anomalies that are interpreted in terms of quartet resonances.

Proposal for the observation of nonlocal multipair production: the biSQUID

We propose an all-superconducting three-terminal setup consisting in a carbon nanotube (or semiconducting nanowire) contacted to three superconducting leads. The resulting device, referred to as a "biSQUID", is made of four quantum dots arranged in two loops of different surface area. We show how this biSQUID can prove a useful tool to probe nonlocal quantum phenomena in an interferometry setup. We study the measured critical current as a function of the applied magnetic field, which shows peaks in its Fourier spectrum, providing clear signatures of multipair Josephson processes. The device does not require any specific fine-tuning as these features are observed for a wide range of microscopic parameters -- albeit with a non-trivial dependence. Competing effects which may play a significant role in actual experimental realizations are also explored.

Multipair DC-Josephson Resonances in a biased all-superconducting Bijunction

An all-superconducting bijunction consists of a central superconductor contacted to two lateral superconductors, such that non-local crossed Andreev reflection is operating. Then new correlated transport channels for the Cooper pairs appear in addition to those of separated conventional Joseph- son junctions. We study this system in a configuration where the superconductors are connected through gate-controllable quantum dots. Multipair phase-coherent resonances and phase-dependent multiple Andreev reflections are both obtained when the voltages of the lateral superconductors are commensurate, and they add to the usual local dissipative transport due to quasiparticles. The two-pair resonance (quartets) as well as some other higher order multipair resonances are π-shifted at low voltage. Dot control can be used to dramatically enhance the multipair current when the voltages are resonant with the dot levels.

Experimental demonstration of Aharonov-Casher interference in a Josephson junction circuit

A neutral quantum particle with magnetic moment encircling a static electric charge acquires a quantum mechanical phase (Aharonov-Casher effect). In superconducting electronics the neutral particle becomes a fluxon that moves around superconducting islands connected by Josephson junctions. The full understanding of this effect in systems of many junctions is crucial for the design of novel quantum circuits. Here we present measurements and quantitative analysis of fluxon interference patterns in a six Josephson junction chain. In this multi-junction circuit the fluxon can encircle any combination of charges on five superconducting islands, resulting in a complex pattern. We compare the experimental results with predictions of a simplified model that treats fluxons as independent excitations and with the results of the full diagonalization of the quantum problem. Our results demonstrate the accuracy of the fluxon interference description and the quantum coherence of these arrays.

Strong disorder renormalization group on fractal lattices: Heisenberg models and magnetoresistive effects in tight binding models

We use a numerical implementation of the strong disorder renormalization group (RG) method to study the low-energy fixed points of random Heisenberg and tight-binding models on different types of fractal lattices. For the Heisenberg model new types of infinite disorder and strong disorder fixed points are found. For the tight-binding model we add an orbital magnetic field and use both diagonal and off-diagonal disorder. For this model besides the gap spectra we study also the fraction of frozen sites, the correlation function, the persistent current and the two-terminal current. The lattices with an even number of sites around each elementary plaquette show a dominant $ϕ_0=h/e$ periodicity. The lattices with an odd number of sites around each elementary plaquette show a dominant $ϕ_0/2$ periodicity at vanishing diagonal disorder, with a positive weak localization-like magnetoconductance at infinite disorder fixed points. The magnetoconductance with both diagonal and off-diagonal disorder depends on the symmetry of the distribution of on-site energies.

Topological order in the insulating Josephson junction array

We propose a Josephson junction array which can be tuned into an unconventional insulating state by varying external magnetic field. This insulating state retains a gap to half vortices; as a consequence, such array with non-trivial global geometry exhibits a ground state degeneracy. This degeneracy is protected from the effects of external noise. We compute the gaps separating higher energy states from the degenerate ground state and we discuss experiments probing the unusual properties of this insulator.

Out of equilibrium statistical ensembles for mesoscopic rings coupled to reservoirs

We derive non equilibrium statistical ensembles for a ballistic Aharonov-Bohm loop connected to several electrodes connected to reservoirs with different chemical potentials. A striking consequence of these non trivial ensembles is the emergence of quantum zero point fluctuations of the persistent current around the loop. Detailed predictions for the low frequency noise power are given.

Breakdown of the Fermi Liquid picture in one dimensional fermion systems: connection with the energy level statistics

Using the adiabatic switching of interactions, we establish a condition for the existence of electronic quasiparticles in a Luttinger liquid. It involves a characteristic interaction strength proportional to the inverse square root of the system length. An investigation of the exact energy level separation probability distribution shows that this interaction scale also corresponds to a cross-over from the non interacting behaviour to a rather typical case for integrable systems, namely an exponential distribution. The level spacing statistics of a spin $1/2$, one branch Luttinger model are also analyzed, as well as the level statistics of a two coupled chain model.
