Maximum And Minimum Dark Matter Detection Cross Sections

The range of neutralino-proton cross sections for R-parity preserving supergravity models with GUT scale unification of the gauge coupling constants is examined. The models considered here are mSUGRA, models with non universal soft breaking and D-brane models. It is found that the current dark matter detectors are sampling significant parts of the SUSY parameter space and future detectors could sample almost the entire space. The special regions of parameter space that may be inaccessible to future detectors are seen to have a squark/gluino spectra beyond 1 TeV, but observable at the LHC.

Enhanced electric dipole moment of the muon in the presence of large neutrino mixing

The electric dipole moment of the muon (d_mu) is evaluated in supersymmetric models with nonzero neutrino masses and large neutrino mixing arising from the seesaw mechanism. It is found that if the seesaw mechanism is embedded in the framework of a left-right symmetric gauge structure, the interactions responsible for the right-handed neutrino Majorana masses lead to an enhancement in d_mu. We find d_mu as large as 5. 10^{-23} ecm with a correlated value of (g-2) = 13. 10^{-10}, even for low values of tan beta. This should provide a strong motivation for improving the edm of the muon to the level of 10^{-24} ecm as has recently been proposed.

Yukawa Textures in Horava-Witten M-Theory

Recent advances in 11 dimensional Horava-Witten M-theory based on non-standard embeddings with torus fibered Calabi-Yau manifolds have allowed the construction of three generation models with Wilson line breaking to the Standard Model gauge symmetry. Central to these constructions is the existence of a set of 5-branes in the bulk. We examine within this framework the general structure of the matter Yukawa couplings and show that M-theory offers an alternate possible way of achieving the CKM and quark mass hierarchies without introducing undue fine tuning or (as in conventional analysis) small parameters raised to high powers. A phenomenological example is presented in accord with all CKM and quark mass data requiring mainly that the 5-branes cluster near the second orbifold plane, and that the instanton charges of the physical orbifold plane vanish. An explicit example of a three generation model with vanishing physical plane instanton charges based on a torus fibered Calabi-Yau three fold with a del Pezzo base $dP_7$ and Wilson line breaking is constructed.

Report of the Beyond the MSSM Subgroup for the Tevatron Run II SUSY/Higgs Workshop

There are many low-energy models of supersymmetry breaking parameters which are motivated by theoretical and experimental considerations. Here, we discuss some of the lesser-known theories of low-energy supersymmetry, and outline their phenomenological consequences. In some cases, these theories have more gauge symmetry or particle content than the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. In other cases, the parameters of the Lagrangian are unusual compared to commonly accepted norms (e.g., Wino LSP, heavy gluino LSP, light gluino, etc.). The phenomenology of supersymmetry varies greatly between the different models. Correspondingly, particular aspects of the detectors assume greater or lesser importance. Detection of supersymmetry and the determination of all parameters may well depend upon having the widest possible view of supersymmetry phenomenology.

Neutralino Proton Cross Sections For Dark Matter In SUGRA And D-BRANE Models

Neutralino proton cross sections are examined for models with R-parity invariance with universal soft breaking (mSUGRA) models, nonuniversal SUGRA models, and D-brane models. The region of parameter space where current dark matter detectors are sensitive, i.e. $1\times 10^{-6}$ pb, is examined. For mSUGRA models, detectors are sampling parts of the parametr space for tan$β>\sim 25$. The nonuniversal models can achieve cross sections that are a factor of 10-100 bigger or smaller then the universal one and in the former case sample regions tan$β>\sim 4$. The D-brane models considered require tan$β>\sim 15$. The inclusion of CP violating phases reduces the cross section by a factor of $\sim$ 2-3 (but also requires considerable fine tuning at the GUT scale). The expected particle spectra at accelerators are examined and seen to differ for each model. Three new regions of possible coannihilation are noted.

CP Violaing Phases In SUSY GUT Models

Supersymmetric CP violating phases are examined within the framework of gravity mediated supergravity grand unified models with R parity invariance for models with a light ($\stackrel{<}{\sim} 1$ TeV) particle spectrum. In the minimal model, the nearness of the t quark Landau pole naturally suppresses the t-quark cubic soft breaking parameter at the electroweak scale allowing the electron and neutron experimental electric dipole moment (EDM) constraints to be satisfied with a large GUT scale phase. However, the EDM constraints require that $θ_B$, the quadratic soft breaking parameter phase be small at the electroweak scale unless tan$β\stackrel{<}{\sim}3$, which then implies that at the GUT scale this phase must be large and highly fine tuned to satisfy radiative breaking of $SU(2)\times U(1)$. Similar results hold for non minimal models, and a possible GUT model is discussed where all GUT scale CP violating phases are naturally small (i.e. O($10^{-2})$). An interesting D-brane model is examined which enhances the size of the phases over much of the parameter space at the electroweak sector for tan$β\stackrel{<}{\sim} 5$, but still possesses the fine tuning problem at the GUT scale.

Neutralino Proton Cross Sections In Supergravity Models

The neutralino-proton cross section is examined for supergravity models with R-parity invariance with universal and non-universal soft breaking. The region of parameter space that dark matter detectors are currently (or will be shortly) sensitive i.e. $(0.1-10)\times 10^{-6}$ pb, is examined. For universal soft breaking (mSUGRA), detectors with sensitivity $σ_{\tildeχ_{1}^{0}-p} \geq 1 \times 10^{-6}$ pb will be able to sample parts of the parameter space for $\tan β\stackrel{>}{\sim} 25$. Current relic density bounds restrict $m_{\tildeχ_{1}^{0}} \leq 120$ GeV for the maximum cross sections, which is below where astronomical uncertainties about the Milky Way are relevant. Nonuniversal soft breaking models can allow much larger cross sections and can sample the parameter space for $\tan β\stackrel{>}{\sim} 4$. In such models, $m_0$ can be quite large reducing the tension between proton decay bounds and dark matter analysis. We note the existance of two new domains where coannihilation effects can enter, i.e. for mSUGRA at large $\tan β$, and for nonuniversal models with small $\tan β$.

CP Violating Phases, Nonuniversal Soft Breaking And D-brane Models

The question of CP violating phases and electric dipole moments (EDMs)for the electron ($d_e$) and the neutron ($d_n$) for supergravity models with nonuniversal soft breaking is considered for models with a light ($\stackrel{<}{\sim}$1 TeV) mass spectrum and R-parity invariance. As with models with universal soft breaking (mSUGRA) one finds a serious fine tuning problem generally arises for $θ_{0B}$ (the phase of the B soft breaking parameter at the GUT scale), if the experimental EDM constraints are obeyed and radiative breaking of $SU(2)_L\times U(1)_Y$ occurs. A D-brane model where $SU(3)_C\times U(1)_Y$ is associated with one set of 5-branes and $SU(2)_L$ with another intersecting set of 5-branes is examined, and the cancellation phenomena is studied over the parameter space of the model. Large values of $θ_B$ (the phase of B at the electroweak scale) can be accommodated, though again $θ_{0B}$ must be fine tuned. Using the conventional prescription for calculating $d_n$, one finds the region in parameter space where the experimental EDM constraints on both $d_e$ and $d_n$ hold is significantly reduced, and generally requires tan$β\stackrel{<}{\sim}$5 for most of the parameter space, though there are small allowed regions even for tan$β\stackrel{>}{\sim}$10. We find the Weinberg three gluon term generally makes significant contributions, and results are sensitive to the values of quark masses.

The Tevatron Tripler: How to Upgrade the Fermilab Tevatron for the Higgs Boson and Supersymmetry

Recent advances in superconductor properties and superconducting magnet technology have made it possible to build cost-effective, high-performance dipoles with a field of 12 Tesla - 3 times the field strength of the Tevatron. Such magnets could be used to upgrade Fermilab's collider in its existing tunnel to a collision energy $\sqrt s$= 6 TeV and luminosity {$\cal L$}$>$ 10$^{33}$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$. We have calculated the parton luminosities for quark-antiquark and gluon-gluon scattering for the Tevatron, the Tripler, and LHC. In most models of the Higgs field and supersymmetry, the Tripler would have a high likelihood to discover many of the predicted particle states.

Grand Unification Scale CP Violating Phases And The Electric Dipole Moment

The question of CP violating phases in supersymmetry and electric dipole moments (EDMs) is considered within the framework of supergravity grand unification (GUT) models with a light ($\stackrel{<}{\sim}$1 TeV) mass spectrum. In the minimal model, the nearness of the t-quark Landau pole automatically suppresses the t-quark cubic soft breaking phase at the electroweak scale. However, current EDM data require the quadratic soft breaking phase to be small at the electroweak scale unless tan$β$ is small (tan$β\stackrel{<}{\sim}$3), and the EDM data combined with the requirement of electroweak symmetry breaking require this phase to be both large and highly fine tuned at the GUT scale unless tan$β$ is small. Non minimal models are also examined, and generally show the same behavior.

Seesaw-constrained MSSM, Solution to the SUSY CP Problem and a Supersymmetric Explanation of $ε'/ε$

We analyze CP violation in the supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) embedded minimally into a left-right symmetric gauge structure with the seesaw mechanism for neutrino masses. With the plausible assumption of universal scalar masses it is shown that CP violation in the hadron sector of the MSSM is described by a single phase residing in the supersymmetry breaking Lagrangian. This improves the CP properties of the MSSM by providing a natural solution to the SUSY CP problem. Furthermore, $ε'/ε$ vanishes in this model above the seesaw scale; extrapolation to the weak scale then leads to a prediction in agreement with the NA31 and the recent KTeV observations. The electric dipole moment of the neutron is naturally suppressed, we estimate its magnitude to be about $4 \times 10^{-29}$ ecm. Additional predictions include a tightly constrained super particle spectrum and vanishingly small CP asymmetries in the $B$ meson system.

Up-Down Unification, Neutrino Masses and Rare Lepton Decays

In a recent paper, we showed that tree level up-down unification of fermion Yukawa couplings is a natural consequence of a large class of supersymmetric models. They can lead to viable quark masses and mixings for moderately large values of $\tanβ$ with interesting and testable predictions for CP violation in the hadronic sector. In this letter, we extend our discussion to the leptonic sector focusing on one particular class of these models, the supersymmetric left-right model with the seesaw mechanism for neutrino masses. We show that fitting the solar and the atmospheric neutrino data considerably restricts the Majorana-Yukawa couplings of the leptons in this model and leads to predictions for the decay $τ\to μ+γ$, which is found to be accessible to the next generation of rare decay searches. We also show that the resulting parameter space of the model is consistent with the requirements of generating adequate baryon asymmetry through lepton-number violating decays of the right-handed neutrino.

Partial Yukawa unification and a supersymmetric origin of flavor mixing

In a large class of supersymmetric SO(10) and left-right models, requiring that the effective theory below the scale of $SU(2)_R$ breaking be the MSSM implies partial Yukawa unification with $Y_u=Y_d$ and $Y_e=Y_{ν^D}$. The same result also emerges in models with a horizontal $SU(3)_H$ symmetry. As a result, at the tree level, these models lead to vanishing quark mixing angles. We show that the correct mixing pattern can be generated in these models at the loop level from the flavor structure associated with the supersymmetry breaking terms. We generalize the constraints on supersymmetric parameters from flavor changing neutral current (FCNC) processes to include several squark mass insertions and confirm the consistency of the scheme. The expectations of this scheme for CP violating observables in the $B$ meson system are quiet different from the KM model, so it can be tested at the B factories.

A supersymmetric resolution of the anomaly in charmless nonleptonic $B$-decays

We examine the large branching ratio for the process $B\to η^{\prime} K$ from the standpoint of R parity violating supersymmetry. We have given all possible $R_p$ violating contributions to $B\to η^{\prime} K$ amplitudes. We find that only two pairs of $λ^{\prime}$-type $R_p$ violating couplings can solve this problem after satisfying all other experimental bounds. We also analyze those modes where these couplings can appear, {\em e.g.}, $B^\pm \to π^{\pm}K^0$, $B^{\pm,0} \to K^{*\pm,0} η^{(\prime)}$, $B^{\pm} \toϕK^{\pm}$ etc., and predict their branching ratios. Further, one of these two pairs of couplings is found to lower the branching ratio of $B^{\pm}\toϕK^\pm$, thereby allowing larger $ξ\equiv{1\over N_c}$. This allows us to fit $B^{\pm}\to ωK^{\pm}$ and $B^{\pm}\to ωπ^{\pm}$, which could not be done in the SM framework.

Trilepton Signal of Grand Unified Models at the Tevatron

At the Tevatron, the most promising channel to detect supersymmetry is three leptons plus missing energy, where the leptons are $e$'s and/or $μ$'s. This final state appears from the production of chargino and second lighetst neutralino. However in grand unified models with universal scalar masses at the grand unified scale, this final state mostly consists of $τ$'s which are hard to detect. We show that for some regions of non universality in the scalar masses at the GUT scale based on unifying groups like SU(5) or SO(10), the final state mostly consists of 3$l$+${\rlap/E}_T$ and $τll$+${\rlap/E}_T$. The first mode has very high detection efficiency and the second one is expected to have high detection efficency as well. We also show that these models can have enough events in these modes to be detected in RUN II.

The signature at the Tevatron for the light doubly charged Higgsino of the supersymmetric left-right model

We analyze the signal at the Tevatron for the doubly charged Higgs superfield of supersymmetric left-right models with gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking. Due to the presence of a new coupling, the lighter stau is usually less massive than the lightest neutralino and is frequently the NLSP. The fermionic part of the doubly charged Higgs field decays dominantly into two tau leptons plus missing energy (gravitino). We find that the inclusive two tau jets and three tau jets plus missing energy signatures could be observable at Run II of the Tevatron. We also find that the distribution in angle between the two highest E_T tau jets when they come from same sign tau leptons can be used to distinguish this model from the others.

Signatures of Gauge Mediated Supersymmetry Breaking Models at the Tevatron

We consider the scenarios of the GMSB models in which the dominant signal for supersymmetry at the Tevatron are the events having two or three $τ$ leptons with high $p_T$ accompanied by large missing transverse energy. This signal is very different from the multijet or multileptons (involving $e$ and/or $μ$ only) in the usual supergravity models or the photonic signals in the GMSB models (where the lightest neutralino is the next to lightest supersymmetric particle (NLSP)). The parameter space where the lighter stau is the NLSP allows this possibility. We find that such a signal could be observable at the Tevatron Run II.

Gauge Mediated Supersymmetry Signals at the Tevatron Involving Tau Leptons

We consider the phenomenology of GMSB models where the lighter stau is the next to lightest supersymmetric particle. In this situation the dominant signals for supersymmetry at the Tevatron are events where two or three high p_T tau leptons accompanied by large missing transverse energy are produced. This leads to signatures that are very different from the photonic signals for GMSB (where the lightest neutralino is the NLSP) and the dilepton and trilepton signals in the usual supergravity models (involving e and/or mu only) that have been investigated extensively. We find that the inclusive 2 tau-jet signature could be observable at the Tevatron Run II, while the inclusive 3 tau-jet signature could be important at Run III.
