CP violation and kaon-pion interactions in B --> K pi+ pi- decays

We study CP violation and the contribution of the strong kaon-pion interactions in the three body B --> K pi+ pi- decays. We extend our recent work on the effect of the two-pion S- and P-wave interactions to that of the corresponding kaon-pion ones. The weak amplitudes have a first term derived in QCD factorization and a second one as a phenomenological contribution added to the QCD penguin amplitudes. The effective QCD coefficients include the leading order contributions plus next-to-leading order vertex and penguins corrections. The matrix elements of the transition to the vacuum of the kaon-pion pairs, appearing naturally in the factorization formulation, are described by the strange K pi scalar (S-wave) and vector (P-wave) form factors. These are determined from Muskhelishvili-Omnes coupled channel equations using experimental kaon-pion T-matrix elements, together with chiral symmetry and asymptotic QCD constraints. From the scalar form factor study, the modulus of the K*_0(1430) decay constant is found to be (32 +/- 5) MeV. The additional phenomenological amplitudes are fitted to reproduce the K pi effective mass and helicity angle distributions, the B --> K*(892) pi branching ratios and the CP asymmetries of the recent data from Belle and BaBar collaborations. We use also the new measurement by the BaBar group of the phase difference between the B0 and B0bar decay amplitudes to K*(892) pi. Our predicted B+/- --> K*_0(1430) pi+/-, K*_0(1430) --> K+/- pi-\+ branching fraction, (11.6 +/- 0.6) 10^{-6}, is smaller than the result of the analyzes of both collaborations. For the neutral B0 decays, the predicted value is (11.1 +- 0.5) 10^{-6}. In order to reduce the large systematic uncertainties in the experimental determination of the B --> K*_0(1430) pi branching fractions, a new parametrization is proposed.

Survey of nucleon electromagnetic form factors

A dressed-quark core contribution to nucleon electromagnetic form factors is calculated. It is defined by the solution of a Poincare' covariant Faddeev equation in which dressed-quarks provide the elementary degree of freedom and correlations between them are expressed via diquarks. The nucleon-photon vertex involves a single parameter; i.e., a diquark charge radius. It is argued to be commensurate with the pion's charge radius. A comprehensive analysis and explanation of the form factors is built upon this foundation. A particular feature of the study is a separation of form factor contributions into those from different diagram types and correlation sectors, and subsequently a flavour separation for each of these. Amongst the extensive body of results that one could highlight are: r_1^{n,u}>r_1^{n,d}, owing to the presence of axial-vector quark-quark correlations; and for both the neutron and proton the ratio of Sachs electric and magnetic form factors possesses a zero.

Modeling electromagnetic form factors of light and heavy pseudoscalar mesons

The electromagnetic form factors of light and heavy pseudoscalar mesons are calculated within two covariant constituent-quark models, a light-front and a dispersion relation approach. We investigate the details and physical origins of the model dependence of various hadronic observables: the weak decay constant, the charge radius and the elastic electromagnetic form factor.

CP violation and final state interactions in B --> K pi pi decays

Effects of CP violation and of final state interactions between pairs of pseudoscalar mesons are studied in three-body B+, B-, B0 and antiB0 decays into K pi pi. An alternative approach to the isobar model for three-body B decays is proposed. It is based on the QCD factorization approximation and the knowledge of the meson-meson form factors. Some phenomenological charming penguin amplitudes are needed to describe the branching fractions, direct CP asymmetries of the quasi-two-body B --> K*(892) pi and B --> K0*(1430) pi decays as well as the K pi effective mass and the helicity angle distributions. The experimental branching fractions for the B --> K0*(1430) pi decay, obtained by the Belle and BaBar collaborations using the isobar model, are larger than our predictions by about 52 per cent.

Resonances and weak interactions in $D^+ \toπ^+ π^- π^+$ decays

We describe the $ππ$ $S$-wave in $D^+ \toπ^+ π^- π^+$ decays using a unitary model for the $ππ$ Final State Interactions (FSI). The three body decay is treated as a quasi two-body process where, at the weak vertex, the D meson decays into a resonance and a pion. The weak part of the decay amplitude is evaluated using the effective weak Hamiltonian within the factorization approximation.

Interference between f0(980) and rho(770) resonances in B --> pion-pion-kaon decays

We study the contribution of the strong interaction between the two pions in S- and P-waves to the weak B --> pion pion kaon decay amplitudes. The interference between these two waves is analyzed in the pion-pion effective mass range of the rho(770) and f0(980) resonances. We use a unitary pion-pion and antikaon-kaon coupled-channel model to describe the S-wave interactions and a Breit-Wigner function for the P-wave amplitude. The weak B-decay amplitudes, obtained from QCD factorization, are supplemented with charming penguin contributions in both waves. The four complex parameters of these long distance terms are determined by fitting the model to the BaBar and Belle data on B^{+,-,0} --> pi+ pi- K^{+,-,0} branching fractions, CP asymmetries, pion-pion effective mass and helicity-angle distributions. This set of data, and in particular the large direct CP-asymmetry for B^{+,-} --> rho0(770) K^{+,-} decays, is well reproduced. The interplay of charming penguin amplitudes and the interference of S- and P-waves describes rather successfully the experimental S and A values of the CP-violating asymmetry for both B0 --> f0(980) K0S and B0 --> rho0(770) K0S decays.

Strong and Weak Interactions in B to pi+ pi- K Decays

To describe the weak three-body B decays into pi+ pi- K, we recently derived amplitudes based on two-body QCD factorization followed by pi+ pi- final state interactions in isoscalar S- and isovector P-waves. We study here the sensitivity of the results to the values of the B to f0(980) transition form factor and to the effective decay constant of the f0(980).

Scalar meson properties from D-meson decays

Decay amplitudes of D(D_s)->f0(980)X, X=pi, K, are compared to experimental branching ratios with the aim of singling out the poorly known D->f0(980) transition form factor in these amplitudes. Since the other elements of the amplitudes are either calculable in an effective QCD theory using operator product expansion or are known from experiment (e.g. the pion and kaon decay constants), we can take advantage of these reactions to constrain the transition form factors obtained in relativistic quark models. In these models, the f0(980) wavefunction requires an unknown size parameter for both its non-strange ubar u(dbar d) and strange sbar s components, which we fit to the D(D_s) decay data.

Form factors in B->f0(980) and D->f0(980) transitions from dispersion relations

Within the dispersion relation approach we give the double spectral representation for space-like and time-like B-> f_0(980) and D-> f_0(980) transition form factors in the full q^2 range. The spectral densities, being the input of the dispersion relations, are obtained from a triangle diagram in the relativistic quark model.

Final state interactions in B --> pi pi K and B--> K antiK K decays

Analysis of charged and neutral B meson decays into pi+ pi- K, K+ K- K and K0S K0S K0S is performed using a unitary representation of the pi pi and K anti- K final state interactions. Comparison of the theoretical model with the experimental data of the Belle and BaBar Collaborations indicates that charming penguin contributions are necessary to describe the B --> f0(980) K and B --> rho(770) K decays.

Planar versus non-planar anti-NN annihilation into mesons in the light of anti-qq operators and the 1/Nc expansion

It is argued that in the antiproton-proton annihilation into two mesons $\bar pp\longrightarrow m_1 m_2$, the origin of different restrictive angular momentum selection rules commonly obtained for planar annihilation diagrams $A2$ and for non-planar rearrangement diagrams $R2$ lies in the omission of momentum transfer between an annihilated antiquark-quark pair and a remaining quark or antiquark. If it is included, there is no reason for dismissing one type of diagram in favor of another one. Some considerations in the large $N_c$ limit of QCD equally shed light on the planar and non-planar contributions to the total $\bar NN\to m_1 m_2$ annihilation amplitude.

Lorentz contraction, geometry and range in antiproton-proton annihilation into two pions

We present a geometric interpretation of the so-called annihilation range in reactions of the type $\bar pp \to$ {\em two light mesons} based upon Lorentz effects in the highly relativistic final states ($γ=E_{\mathrm{cm}}/2mc^2\simeq 6.8-8.0$). Lorentz-boosted meson wave functions, within the framework of the constituent quark model, result in a richer angular dependence of the annihilation amplitudes and thus in higher partial wave contributions ($J>1$) than usually obtained. This approach sheds some light on what could be a "{\em short}" annihilation range and how it is influenced by the angular distribution of the final states.

Relativistic effects and angular dependence in the reaction antiproton-proton -> pi^- pi^+

We present a new fit to the LEAR data on antiproton-proton -> pi^- pi^+ differential cross sections and analyzing powers motivated by relativistic considerations. Within a quark model describing this annihilation we argue, since the pions are highly energetic, that relativistic effects cannot be neglected. The intrinsic pion wave functions are Lorentz transformed to the center of mass frame. This change in quark geometry gives rise to additional angular dependence in the transition operators and results in a relative enhancement of higher J \ge 2 partial wave amplitudes. The fit to the data is improved significantly.

A relativistic treatment of pion wave functions in the annihilation antiproton-proton -> pi^-pi^+

Quark model intrinsic wave functions of highly energetic pions in the reaction \bar pp->π^-π^+ are subjected to a relativistic treatment. The annihilation is described in a constituent quark model with A2 and R2 flavor-flux topology and the annihilated quark-antiquark pairs are in 3P_0 and 3S_1 states. We study the effects of pure Lorentz transformations on the antiquark and quark spatial wave functions and their respective spinors in the pion. The modified quark geometry of the pion has considerable impact on the angular dependence of the annihilation mechanisms.
