Extracting $pΛ$ scattering lengths from heavy ion collisions

The source radii, previously extracted by STAR Collaboration from the $p-Λ\oplus \bar{p}-\barΛ$ and $\bar{p}-Λ\oplus p-\barΛ$ correlation functions measured in 10% most central Au+Au collisions at top RHIC energy $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV, differ by a factor of 2. The probable reason for this is the neglect of residual correlation effect in the STAR analysis. In the present paper we analyze baryon correlation functions within Lednicky and Lyuboshitz analytical model, extended to effectively account for the residual correlation contribution. Different analytical approximations for such a contribution are considered. We also use the averaged source radii extracted from the hydrokinetic model (HKM) simulations to fit the experimental data. In contrast to the STAR experimental study, the calculations in HKM show both $pΛ$ and $p\barΛ$ radii to be quite close, as expected from theoretical considerations. Using the effective Gaussian parametrization of residual correlations we obtain a satisfactory fit to the measured baryon-antibaryon correlation function with the HKM source radius value 3.28 fm. The baryon-antibaryon spin-averaged strong interaction scattering length is also extracted from the fit to the experimental correlation function.

Pion femtoscopy in p+p collisions at sqrt(s)=200 GeV

The STAR Collaboration at RHIC has measured two-pion correlation functions from p+p collisions at sqrt(s)=200 GeV. Spatial scales are extracted via a femtoscopic analysis of the correlations, though this analysis is complicated by the presence of strong non-femtoscopic effects. Our results are put into the context of the world dataset of femtoscopy in hadron-hadron collisions. We present the first direct comparison of femtoscopy in p+p and heavy ion collisions, under identical analysis and detector conditions.

Azimuthal di-hadron correlations in d+Au and Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV from STAR

Yields, correlation shapes, and mean transverse momenta \pt{} of charged particles associated with intermediate to high-\pt{} trigger particles ($2.5 < \pt < 10$ \GeVc) in d+Au and Au+Au collisions at $\snn=200$ GeV are presented. For associated particles at higher $\pt \gtrsim 2.5$ \GeVc, narrow correlation peaks are seen in d+Au and Au+Au, indicating that the main production mechanism is jet fragmentation. At lower associated particle $\pt < 2$ \GeVc, a large enhancement of the near- ($\dphi \sim 0$) and away-side ($\dphi \sim π$) associated yields is found, together with a strong broadening of the away-side azimuthal distributions in Au+Au collisions compared to d+Au measurements, suggesting that other particle production mechanisms play a role. This is further supported by the observed significant softening of the away-side associated particle yield distribution at $\dphi \sim π$ in central Au+Au collisions.

An Experimental Exploration of the QCD Phase Diagram: The Search for the Critical Point and the Onset of De-confinement

The QCD phase diagram lies at the heart of what the RHIC Physics Program is all about. While RHIC has been operating very successfully at or close to its maximum energy for almost a decade, it has become clear that this collider can also be operated at lower energies down to 5 GeV without extensive upgrades. An exploration of the full region of beam energies available at the RHIC facility is imperative. The STAR detector, due to its large uniform acceptance and excellent particle identification capabilities, is uniquely positioned to carry out this program in depth and detail. The first exploratory beam energy scan (BES) run at RHIC took place in 2010 (Run 10), since several STAR upgrades, most importantly a full barrel Time of Flight detector, are now completed which add new capabilities important for the interesting physics at BES energies. In this document we discuss current proposed measurements, with estimations of the accuracy of the measurements given an assumed event count at each beam energy.

Higher Moments of Net-proton Multiplicity Distributions at RHIC

We report the first measurements of the kurtosis (κ), skewness (S) and variance (σ^2) of net-proton multiplicity (N_p - N_pbar) distributions at midrapidity for Au+Au collisions at \sqrt(s_NN) = 19.6, 62.4, and 200 GeV corresponding to baryon chemical potentials (μ_B) between 200 - 20 MeV. Our measurements of the products κσ^2 and S σ, which can be related to theoretical calculations sensitive to baryon number susceptibilities and long range correlations, are constant as functions of collision centrality. We compare these products with results from lattice QCD and various models without a critical point and study the \sqrt(s_NN) dependence of κσ^2. From the measurements at the three beam energies, we find no evidence for a critical point in the QCD phase diagram for μ_B below 200 MeV.

K*0 production in Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions at \sqrt{s_NN} = 62.4 GeV and 200 GeV

We report on K*0 production at mid-rapidity in Au+Au and Cu+Cu collisions at \sqrt{s_{NN}} = 62.4 and 200 GeV collected by the Solenoid Tracker at RHIC (STAR) detector. The K*0 is reconstructed via the hadronic decays K*0 \to K+ pi- and \bar{K*0} \to K-pi+. Transverse momentum, pT, spectra are measured over a range of pT extending from 0.2 GeV/c to 5 GeV/c. The center of mass energy and system size dependence of the rapidity density, dN/dy, and the average transverse momentum, , are presented. The measured N(K*0)/N(K) and N(ϕ)/N(K*0) ratios favor the dominance of re-scattering of decay daughters of K*0 over the hadronic regeneration for the K*0 production. In the intermediate pT region (2.0 < pT < 4.0 GeV/c), the elliptic flow parameter, v2, and the nuclear modification factor, RCP, agree with the expectations from the quark coalescence model of particle production.

Upsilon cross section in p+p collisions at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV

We report on a measurement of the Upsilon(1S+2S+3S) -> e+e- cross section at midrapidity in p+p collisions at sqrt(s)=200 GeV. We find the cross section to be 114 +/- 38 (stat.) +23,-24 (syst.) pb. Perturbative QCD calculations at next-to-leading order in the Color Evaporation Model are in agreement with our measurement, while calculations in the Color Singlet Model underestimate it by 2 sigma. Our result is consistent with the trend seen in world data as a function of the center-of-mass energy of the collision and extends the availability of Upsilon data to RHIC energies. The dielectron continuum in the invariant mass range near the Upsilon is also studied to obtain a combined cross section of Drell-Yan plus (b b-bar) -> e+e-.

Beam-Energy and System-Size Dependence of Dynamical Net Charge Fluctuations

We present measurements of net charge fluctuations in $Au + Au$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = $ 19.6, 62.4, 130, and 200 GeV, $Cu + Cu$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = $ 62.4, 200 GeV, and $p + p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = $ 200 GeV using the dynamical net charge fluctuations measure $ν_{+-{\rm,dyn}}$. We observe that the dynamical fluctuations are non-zero at all energies and exhibit a modest dependence on beam energy. A weak system size dependence is also observed. We examine the collision centrality dependence of the net charge fluctuations and find that dynamical net charge fluctuations violate $1/N_{ch}$ scaling, but display approximate $1/N_{part}$ scaling. We also study the azimuthal and rapidity dependence of the net charge correlation strength and observe strong dependence on the azimuthal angular range and pseudorapidity widths integrated to measure the correlation.

Residual correlations between decay products of $π^0π^0$ and $pΣ^0$ systems

Residual correlations between decay products due to a combination of both correlations between parents at small relative velocities and small decay momenta are discussed. Residual correlations between photons from pion decays are considered as a new possible source of information on direct photon fraction. Residual correlations in $pγ$ and $pΛ$ systems due to $pΣ^0$ interaction in final state are predicted based on the $pΣ^0$ low energy scattering parameters deduced from the spin-flavour SU$_6$ model by Fujiwara et al. including effective meson exchange potentials and explicit flavour symmetry breaking to reproduce the properties of the two-nucleon system and the low-energy hyperon-nucleon cross section data. The $pγ_{Σ^0}$ residual correlation is concentrated at $k^* \approx 70$ Mev/$c$ and its shape and intensity appears to be sensitive to the scattering parameters and space-time dimensions of the source. The $pΛ_{Σ^0}$ residual correlation recovers the negative parent $pΣ^0$ correlation for $k^* > 70$ Mev/$c$. The neglect of this negative residual correlation would lead to the underestimation of the parent $pΛ$ correlation effect and to an overestimation of the source size.

Strange baryon resonance production in $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200$ GeV $p+p$ and $Au+Au$ collisions

We report the measurements of $Σ(1385)$ and $Λ(1520)$ production in $p+p$ and $Au+Au$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200$ GeV from the STAR collaboration. The yields and the $p_{T}$ spectra are presented and discussed in terms of chemical and thermal freeze-out conditions and compared to model predictions. Thermal and microscopic models do not adequately describe the yields of all the resonances produced in central $Au+Au$ collisions. Our results indicate that there may be a time-span between chemical and thermal freeze-out during which elastic hadronic interactions occur.

Hydrodynamic source with continuous emission in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV

We analyze single particle momentum spectra and interferometry radii in central Au+Au collisions at RHIC within a hydro-inspired parametrization accounting for continuous hadron emission through the whole lifetime of hydrodynamically expanding fireball. We found that a satisfactory description of the data is achieved for a physically reasonable set of parameters when the emission from non space-like sectors of the enclosed freeze-out hypersurface is fairly long: $ 9$ fm/c. This protracted surface emission is compensated in outward interferometry radii by positive $r_{out} - t$ correlations that are the result of an intensive transverse expansion. The main features of the experimental data are reproduced: in particular, the obtained ratio of the outward to sideward interferometry radii is less than unity and decreases with increasing transverse momenta of pion pairs. The extracted value of the temperature of emission from the surface of hydrodynamic tube approximately coincides with one found at chemical freeze-out in RHIC Au+Au collisions. A significant contribution of the surface emission to the spectra and to the correlation functions at relatively large transverse momenta should be taken into account in advanced hydrodynamic models of ultrarelativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions.

The STAR Silicon Strip Detector (SSD)

The STAR Silicon Strip Detector (SSD) completes the three layers of the Silicon Vertex Tracker (SVT) to make an inner tracking system located inside the Time Projection Chamber (TPC). This additional fourth layer provides two dimensional hit position and energy loss measurements for charged particles, improving the extrapolation of TPC tracks through SVT hits. To match the high multiplicity of central Au+Au collisions at RHIC the double sided silicon strip technology was chosen which makes the SSD a half million channels detector. Dedicated electronics have been designed for both readout and control. Also a novel technique of bonding, the Tape Automated Bonding (TAB), was used to fullfill the large number of bounds to be done. All aspects of the SSD are shortly described here and test performances of produced detection modules as well as simulated results on hit reconstruction are given.

Multiboson effects in multiparticle production

The influence of multiboson effects on pion multiplicities, single-pion spectra and two-pion correlation functions is discussed in terms of an analytically solvable model. The applicability of its basic factorization assumption is clarified. An approximate scaling of the basic observables with the phase space density is demonstrated in the low density (gas) limit. This scaling and also its violation at high densities due to the condensate formation is described by approximate analytical formulae which allow, in principle, for the identification of the multiboson effects among others. For moderate densities indicated by the experimental data, a fast saturation of multiboson effects with the number of contributing cumulants is obtained, allowing for the account of these effects in realistic transport code simulations. At high densities, the spectra are mainly determined by the universal condensate term and the initially narrow Poisson multiplicity distribution approaches a wide Bose-Einstein one. As a result, the intercepts of the inclusive and fixed-$n$ correlation functions (properly normalized to 1 at large relative momenta) approach 2 and 1, respectively and their widths logarithmically increase with the increasing phase space density. It is shown that the neglect of energy-momentum constraints in the model is justified except near a multipion threshold, where these constraints practically exclude the possibility of a very cold condensate production. It is argued that spectacular multiboson effects are likely to be observed only in the rare events containing sufficiently high density (speckle) fluctuations.
