Ideal Chern bands are Landau levels in curved space

We prove that all the criteria proposed in the literature to identify a Chern band hosting exact fractional Chern insulating ground states, in fact, describe an equivalence with a lowest Landau level defined in curved space under a non-uniform magnetic field. In addition, we design an operational test for the most general instance of such lowest Landau level mapping, which only relies on the computationally inexpensive evaluation of Bloch wavefunctions' derivatives. Our work clarifies the common origin of various Chern-idealness criteria, proves that these criteria exhaust all possible lowest Landau levels, and hints at classes of Chern bands that may posses interesting phases beyond Landau level physics.

Matrix Product State Description and Gaplessness of the Haldane-Rezayi State

We derive an exact matrix product state representation of the Haldane-Rezayi state on both the cylinder and torus geometry. Our derivation is based on the description of the Haldane-Rezayi state as a correlator in a non-unitary logarithmic conformal field theory. This construction faithfully captures the ten degenerate ground states of this model state on the torus. Using the cylinder geometry, we probe the gapless nature of the phase by extracting the correlation length, which diverges in the thermodynamic limit. The numerically extracted topological entanglement entropies seem to only probe the Abelian part of the theory, which is reminiscent of the Gaffnian state, another model state deriving from a non-unitary conformal field theory.

Microscopic Study of the Halperin - Laughlin Interface through Matrix Product States

Interfaces between topologically distinct phases of matter reveal a remarkably rich phenomenology. We study the experimentally relevant interface between a Laughlin phase at filling factor $\nu=1/3$ and a Halperin 332 phase at filling factor $\nu=2/5$. Based on our recent construction of chiral topological interfaces in [Nat. Commun. 10, 1860 (2019)], we study a family of model wavefunctions that captures both the bulk and interface properties. These model wavefunctions are built within the matrix product state framework. The validity of our approach is substantiated through extensive comparisons with exact diagonalization studies. We probe previously unreachable features of the low energy physics of the transition. We provide, amongst other things, the characterization of the interface gapless mode and the identification of the spin and charge excitations in the many-body spectrum. The methods and tools presented are applicable to a broad range of topological interfaces.

Model States for a Class of Chiral Topological Order Interfaces

Interfaces between topologically distinct phases of matter reveal a remarkably rich phenomenology. To go beyond effective field theories, we study the prototypical example of such an interface between two Abelian states, namely the Laughlin and Halperin states. Using matrix product states, we propose a family of model wavefunctions for the whole system including both bulks and the interface. We show through extensive numerical studies that it unveils both the universal properties of the system, such as the central charge of the gapless interface mode and its microscopic features. It also captures the low energy physics of experimentally relevant Hamiltonians. Our approach can be generalized to other phases described by tensor networks.

Entanglement entropy and Berezin-Toeplitz operators

We consider Berezin-Toeplitz operators on compact Kahler manifolds whose symbols are characteristic functions. When the support of the characteristic function has a smooth boundary, we prove a two-term Weyl law, the second term being proportional to the Riemannian volume of the boundary. As a consequence, we deduce the area law for the entanglement entropy of integer quantum Hall states. Another application is for the determinantal processes with correlation kernel the Bergman kernels of a positive line bundle : we prove that the number of points in a smooth domain is asymptotically normal.

Matrix product state representation of non-Abelian quasiholes

We provide a detailed explanation of the formalism necessary to construct matrix product states for non-Abelian quasiholes in fractional quantum Hall model states. Our construction yields an efficient representation of the wave functions with conformal-block normalization and monodromy, and complements the matrix product state representation of fractional quantum Hall ground states.

On the particle entanglement spectrum of the Laughlin states

The study of the entanglement entropy and entanglement spectrum has proven to be very fruitful in identifying topological phases of matter. Typically, one performs numerical studies of finite-size systems. However, there are few rigorous results for finite-size systems. We revisit the problem of determining the rank of the "particle entanglement spectrum" of the Laughlin states. We reformulate the problem into a problem concerning the ideal of symmetric polynomials that vanish under the formation of several clusters of particles. We give an explicit generating family of this ideal, and we prove that polynomials in this ideal have a total degree that is bounded from below. We discuss the difficulty in proving the same bound on the degree of any of the variables, which is necessary to determine the rank of the particle entanglement spectrum.

Braiding non-Abelian quasiholes in fractional quantum Hall states

Quasiholes in certain fractional quantum Hall states are promising candidates for the experimental realization of non-Abelian anyons. They are assumed to be localized excitations, and to display non-Abelian statistics when sufficiently separated, but these properties have not been explicitly demonstrated except for the Moore-Read state. In this work, we apply the newly developed matrix product state technique to examine these exotic excitations. For the Moore-Read and the $\mathbb{Z}_3$ Read-Rezayi states, we estimate the quasihole radii, and determine the correlation lengths associated with the exponential convergence of the braiding statistics. We provide the first microscopic verification for the Fibonacci nature of the $\mathbb{Z}_3$ Read-Rezayi quasiholes. We also present evidence for the failure of plasma screening in the non-unitary Gaffnian wave function.

Correlation Lengths and Topological Entanglement Entropies of Unitary and Non-Unitary Fractional Quantum Hall Wavefunctions

Using the newly developed Matrix Product State (MPS) formalism for non-abelian Fractional Quantum Hall (FQH) states, we address the question of whether a FQH trial wave function written as a correlation function in a non-unitary Conformal Field Theory (CFT) can describe the bulk of a gapped FQH phase. We show that the non-unitary Gaffnian state exhibits clear signatures of a pathological behavior. As a benchmark we compute the correlation length of Moore-Read state and find it to be finite in the thermodynamic limit. By contrast, the Gaffnian state has infinite correlation length in (at least) the non-Abelian sector, and is therefore gapless. We also compute the topological entanglement entropy of several non-abelian states with and without quasiholes. For the first time in FQH the results are in excellent agreement in all topological sectors with the CFT prediction for unitary states. For the non-unitary Gaffnian state in finite size systems, the topological entanglement entropy seems to behave like that of the Composite Fermion Jain state at equal filling.

Fractional Quantum Hall Matrix Product States For Interacting Conformal Field Theories

Using truncated conformal field theory (CFT), we present the formalism necessary to obtain exact matrix product state (MPS) representations for any fractional quantum hall model state which can be written as an expectation value of primary fields in some conformal field theory. The auxiliary bond space is the Hilbert space of the descendants of primary fields and matrix elements can be calculated using well-known CFT commutation relations. We obtain a site-independent MPS representation on the thin annulus and cylinder, while a site-dependent representation is possible on the disk and sphere geometries. We discuss the complications that arise due to the presence of null vectors in the theory's Hilbert space, and present an array of procedures which optimize the numerical calculation of matrix elements. By truncating the Hilbert space of the CFT, we then build an approximate MPS representation for Laughlin, Moore-Read, Read-Rezayi, Gaffnian, minimal $M(3,r+2)$ models, and a series of superconformal minimal models. We show how to obtain, in the MPS representation, the Orbital, Particle, and Real Space entanglement spectrum in both the finite and infinite systems.

Matrix Product States for Trial Quantum Hall States

We obtain an exact matrix-product-state (MPS) representation of a large series of fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states in various geometries of genus 0. The states in question include all paired k=2 Jack polynomials, such as the Moore-Read and Gaffnian states, as well as the Read-Rezayi k=3 state. We also outline the procedures through which the MPS of other model FQH states can be obtained, provided their wavefunction can be written as a correlator in a 1+1 conformal field theory (CFT). The auxiliary Hilbert space of the MPS, which gives the counting of the entanglement spectrum, is then simply the Hilbert space of the underlying CFT. This formalism enlightens the link between entanglement spectrum and edge modes. Properties of model wavefunctions such as the thin-torus root partitions and squeezing are recast in the MPS form, and numerical benchmarks for the accuracy of the new MPS prescription in various geometries are provided.

D-Algebra Structure of Topological Insulators

In the quantum Hall effect, the density operators at different wave-vectors generally do not commute and give rise to the Girvin MacDonald Plazmann (GMP) algebra with important consequences such as ground-state center of mass degeneracy at fractional filling fraction, and W_{1 + \infty} symmetry of the filled Landau levels. We show that the natural generalization of the GMP algebra to higher dimensional topological insulators involves the concept of a D-algebra formed by using the fully anti-symmetric tensor in D-dimensions. For insulators in even dimensional space, the D-algebra is isotropic and closes for the case of constant non-Abelian F(k) ^ F(k) ... ^ F(k) connection (D-Berry curvature), and its structure factors are proportional to the D/2-Chern number. In odd dimensions, the algebra is not isotropic, contains the weak topological insulator index (layers of the topological insulator in one less dimension) and does not contain the Chern-Simons θform (F ^ A - 2/3 A ^ A ^ A in 3 dimensions). The Chern-Simons form appears in a certain combination of the parallel transport and simple translation operator which is not an algebra. The possible relation to D-dimensional volume preserving diffeomorphisms and parallel transport of extended objects is also discussed.

Proposed realization of the Dicke-model quantum phase transition in an optical cavity QED system

The Dicke model consisting of an ensemble of two-state atoms interacting with a single quantized mode of the electromagnetic field exhibits a zero-temperature phase transition at a critical value of the dipole coupling strength. We propose a scheme based on multilevel atoms and cavity-mediated Raman transitions to realise an effective Dicke system operating in the phase transition regime. Output light from the cavity carries signatures of the critical behavior which is analyzed for the thermodynamic limit where the number of atoms is very large.
