Magnetic field anti-symmetry of photovoltaic voltage in evanescent microwave fields

A two dimensional electron system without spatial inversion symmetry develops a sample specific dc voltage when exposed to a microwave radiation at low temperature. We investigate this photovoltaic (PV) effect, in the case where spatial symmetry is broken by an evanescent high-frequency potential. We measure the induced PV voltage in a ${\rm GaAs/Ga_{1-x}Al_{x}As}$ Hall bar at magnetic fields in the Tesla range. We find that in this regime the induced PV voltage is anti-symmetric with magnetic field, and exhibits regular Shubnikov-de Haas like oscillations. Our experimental results can be understood from a simple model, which describes the effect of stationary orbital currents caused by microwave driving.

Quantum partition noise of photo-created electron-hole pairs

We show experimentally that even when no bias voltage is applied to a quantum conductor, the electronic quantum partition noise can be investigated using GHz radiofrequency irradiation of a reservoir. Using a Quantum Point Contact configuration as the ballistic conductor we are able to make an accurate determination of the partition noise Fano factor resulting from the photo-assisted shot noise. Applying both voltage bias and rf irradiation we are able to make a definitive quantitative test of the scattering theory of photo-assisted shot noise.

Observation of Persistent Currents in Mesoscopic Connected Rings

We report measurements of the low temperature magnetic response of a line of 16 GaAs/GaAlAs \emph{connected} mesoscopic rings whose total length is much larger than $l_ϕ$. Using an on-chip micro-\textsc{squid} technology, we have measured a periodic response, with period $h/e$, corresponding to persistent currents in the rings of typical amplitude $0.40\pm 0.08 nA$ per ring. Direct comparison with measurements on the same rings but \emph{isolated} is presented.

Internal avalanches in a pile of superconducting vortices

Using an array of miniature Hall probes, we monitored the spatiotemporal variation of the internal magnetic induction in a superconducting niobium sample during a slow sweep of external magnetic field. We found that a sizable fraction of the increase in the local vortex population occurs in abrupt jumps. The size distribution of these avalanches presents a power-law collapse on a limited range. In contrast, at low temperatures and low fields, huge avalanches with a typical size occur and the system does not display a well-defined macroscopic critical current.

Observation of the e/3 Fractionally Charged Laughlin Quasiparticles

The existence of fractional charges carrying the current is experimentally demonstrated. Using a 2-D electron system in high magnetic field, we measure the shot noise associated with tunneling in the fractional quantum Hall regime at Landau level filling factor 1/3. The noise gives a direct determination of the quasiparticle charge, which is found to be e*=e/3 as predicted by Laughlin. The existence of e/3 Laughlin quasiparticles is unambiguously confirmed by the shot noise to Johnson-Nyquist noise cross-over found for temperature e*V/2k.
