Origin of the magnetic ground state of Tb$_{2}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$

Magnetic-rare-earth pyrochlore iridates exhibit a rich variety of unconventional phases, driven by the complex interactions within and between the rare-earth and the iridium sublattices. In this study, we investigate the peculiar magnetic state of Tb$_{2}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$, where a component of the Tb$^{3+}$ moment orders perpendicular to its local Ising anisotropy axis. By means of neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering down to dilution temperatures, complemented by specific heat measurements, we show that this intriguing magnetic state is fully established at 1.5 K and we characterize its excitation spectrum across a broad range of energies. Our calculations reveal that bilinear interactions between Tb$^{3+}$ ions subjected to the Ir molecular field capture several key features of the experiments, but need to be supplemented to fully reproduce the observed behavior.

Vortex order in magnetic frustrated GeNi$_2$O$_4$ and GeCo$_2$O$_4$ spinels

In the search for new spin textures based on singular magnetic objects like Bloch-points or vortices, spinel compounds emerge as an interesting playground due to the interplay between magnetic anisotropy and complex interactions that extend well beyond first neighbors on a pyrochlore lattice. Based on an exploration of the exchange interaction phase diagrams of members of the Ge$B_2$O$_4$ family with $B$=Co and Ni, we show, using simultaneous modeling of inelastic neutron scattering measurements and single-crystal neutron diffraction data, that a 2-$k$ magnetic structure may be stabilized in these compounds. This leads to a short period spin vortex crystal, a variant induced by the magnetic anisotropy of the 3-$k$ Bloch-point structure predicted for isotropic spins. Our study rationalizes the formation of these multi-$k$ spin textures in frustrated antiferromagnets, as well as their anisotropy-dependent evolution.

Quantum spin liquid on a 3D bipartite lattice of spin trimers stabilized by enhanced effective anisotropy

Quantum spin liquids (QSLs) represent highly entangled states of matter in which frustration-induced quantum fluctuations suppress any symmetry-breaking phase transition down to absolute zero, giving rise to fractionalized excitations and emergent gauge fields. Theoretically, bond anisotropy can stabilize QSLs even on bipartite lattices, as exemplified by the Kitaev honeycomb model; however, no material has so far been established to realize such a state as its true ground state. Here we identify the three-dimensional spin-trimer magnet KBa$_3$Ca$_4$Cu$_3$V$_7$O$_{28}$ as a promising candidate for a bipartite quantum spin liquid persisting to the lowest temperatures. Strongly coupled Cu$^{2+}$ trimers form effective pseudospin-1/2 degrees of freedom upon cooling, which in turn constitute a three-dimensional bipartite network. Bulk thermodynamic measurements, neutron scattering, $μ$SR, and NMR detect no spin freezing or symmetry-breaking phase transition down to 20 mK, but instead reveal a gapless dynamical ground state with algebraic spin autocorrelations. Complementary Monte Carlo and exact-diagonalization calculations show that this state is stabilized by a strong enhancement of effective anisotropy: a weak microscopic Cu-Cu exchange anisotropy of approximately 15 percent is generically amplified at the trimer level, producing effective pseudospin-pseudospin interaction anisotropies of 60 to 100 percent. Our results establish trimer-based networks as a promising platform for realizing anisotropy-stabilized quantum entangled states, even in three-dimensional bipartite systems with only weak microscopic anisotropy.

Evidence for spin liquid behavior in the frustrated three-dimensional $S = 1/2$ Heisenberg garnet NaCa$_{2}$Cu$_{2}$(VO$_{4}$)$_{3}$

Three-dimensional quantum spin liquids have remained elusive, hindered by reduced quantum fluctuations from larger lattice connectivity inherent to high-dimensional systems. Here, we investigate the remarkable persistence of dynamical short-range magnetic correlations in the nearly body-centered cubic garnet NaCa$_{2}$Cu$_{2}$(VO$_{4}$)$_{3}$ down to $T = 50$ mK, two orders of magnitude below its Curie-Weiss temperature. Using a combination of neutron and muon spectroscopies plus numerical simulations, we demonstrate that a dynamical regime emerges, characterized by a dual response in the inelastic spectrum composed of short-live dispersive excitations and a quasi-elastic component. Strongly frustrated exchange interactions combined with subtle temperature-dependent Jahn-Teller spin-lattice effects are a plausible mechanism to explain the origin of this spin-liquid behavior.

Fluctuating magnetism in Zn-doped averievite with well-separated kagome layers

Kagome lattice decorated with S=1/2 spins is one of the most discussed ways to realize a quantum spin liquid. However, all previous material realizations of this model have suffered from additional complications, ranging from additional interactions to impurity effects. Recently, a new quantum kagome system has been identified in the form of averievite Cu(5-x)ZnxV2O10(CsCl), featuring a unique double-layer spacing between the kagome planes. Using muon spin spectroscopy we show that only a complete substitution (i.e. $x=2$) of interplanar copper ions leads to a quantum-disordered ground state. In contrast, the parent compound ($x=0$) exhibits long-range magnetic order, with a phase transition around 24 K. Experiments performed on the partially substituted material ($x=1$) show that the transformation proceeds through an intermediate disordered, partially frozen ground state, unaffected by pressures up to 23 kbar. Our study provides a microscopic view of the magnetism of the decoupling of the kagome layers and establishes the averievite as a new material platform for the experimental study of the fully-decoupled kagome layers.

Interplanar magnetic exchange in CoPS$_3$

Neutron three-axis spectrometry has been used to determine the interplanar magnetic exchange parameter in the magnetic van der Waals compound CoPS$_3$. The exchange is found to be small and antiferromagnetic, estimated to be 0.020 $\pm$ 0.001 meV, which is surprising considering that the magnetic structure is correlated ferromagnetically between the ab planes. A possible explanation, involving a small anisotropy in the exchanges, is proposed. The results are discussed with reference to the other members of the transition metal-PS3 compounds.

Long-range magnetic order in CePdAl$_3$ enabled by orthorhombic deformation

We investigate the effect of structural deformation on the magnetic properties of orthorhombic CePdAl$_3$ in relation to its tetragonal polymorph. Utilizing x-ray and neutron diffraction we establish that the crystal structure has the $Cmcm$ space group symmetry and exhibits pseudo-tetragonal twinning. According to density-functional calculations the tetragonal-orthorhombic deformation mechanism has its grounds in relatively small free enthalpy difference between the polymorphs, allowing either phase to be quenched and fully accounts for the twinned microstructure of the orthorhombic phase. Neutron diffraction measurements show that orthorhombic CePdAl$_3$ establishes long-range magnetic order below $T_\mathrm{N}$=5.29 (5) K characterized by a collinear, antiferromagnetic arrangement of magnetic moments. Magnetic anisotropies of orthorhombic CePdAl$_3$ arise from strong spin-orbit coupling as evidenced by the crystal-field splitting of the $4f$ multiplet, fully characterised with neutron spectroscopy. We discuss the potential mechanism of frustration posed by antiferromagnetic interactions between nearest neighbours in the tetragonal phase, which hinders the formation of long-range magnetic order in tetragonal CePdAl$_3$. We propose that orthorhombic deformation releases the frustration and allows for long-range magnetic order.

Collective magnetic state induced by charge disorder in the non-Kramers rare-earth pyrochlore Tb$_{2}$ScNbO$_{7}$

Geometrical frustration, as in pyrochlore lattices made of corner-sharing tetrahedra, precludes the onset of conventional magnetic ordering, enabling the stabilization of fluctuating spin states at low temperature. Disorder is a subtle ingredient that can modify the nature of these exotic non-ordered phases. Here, we study the interplay between disorder and magnetic frustration in the new pyrochlore Tb$_{2}$ScNbO$_{7}$ where the non magnetic site presents a charge disorder Nb$^{5+}$/Sc$^{3+}$. Its quantification with sophisticated diffraction techniques (electrons, X-rays, neutrons) allows us to estimate the distribution of the splitting of the magnetic Tb$^{3+}$ non-Kramers ground state doublets and to compare it with excitations measured in inelastic neutron scattering. Combining macroscopic and neutron scattering measurements, we show that a clear spin glass transition at 1 K stems out while retaining strong spin liquid correlations. Our results suggest that Tb$_{2}$ScNbO$_{7}$ stabilizes one of the novel disorder induced quantum spin liquid or topological glassy phases recently proposed theoretically.

Magnetic ground states and excitations in Zn-doped averieite -- a family of oxide-based $S=1/2$ kagome antiferromagnets

Spin-1/2 kagome materials have recently attracted a resurgence of interest as they are considered an ideal host of the quantum spin liquid (QSL) state, which can underpin functionality such as superconductivity. Here we report the first synthesis and characterization of a new oxide-based distorted $S=1/2$ kagome antiferromagnet (KAFM) in the Zn$_x$Cu$_{5-x}$(VO$_4$)$_{2}$O$_2$CsCl (termed Zn$\mathbf {_x}$) series, namely Zn$_2$-averievite, Zn$\mathbf {_2}$ ($x=2$). Using magnetometry, synchrotron diffraction and neutron scattering we demonstrate an evolution of ground states with $x$ in Zn$\mathbf {_x}$; from long-range magnetic order in averievite ($x=0$), via a spin-glass-like ground state in Zn$\mathbf {_1}$, to a quantum spin liquid (QSL) in Zn$\mathbf {_2}$ for which inelastic neutron scattering reveals a gapless continuum of excitations. Similar to archetypal $S = 1/2$ KAFMs herbertsmithite and SrCr$_{8.19}$Ga$_{3.81}$O$_{19}$ (SCGO), the dynamic magnetic susceptibility of Zn$\mathbf {_2}$ shows scaling behavior consistent with proximity to a quantum critical point. The results demonstrate that the new Zn$\mathbf {_2}$ material is an excellent test bed for achieving the elusive goal of charge carrier doping in QSL states of $S = 1/2$ KAFMs, in-line with previous theoretical studies.

Spin wave spectra of single crystal CoPS$_3$

The spin waves in single crystals of the layered van der Waals antiferromagnet CoPS$_3$ have been measured using inelastic neutron scattering. The data show four distinct spin wave branches with large ($\gtrsim 14$ meV) energy gaps at the Brillouin zone center indicating significant anisotropy. The data were modelled using linear spin wave theory derived from a Heisenberg Hamiltonian. Exchange interactions up to the third nearest-neighbour in the layered planes were required to fit the data with ferromagnetic $J_1 = -1.37$ meV between first neighbours, antiferromagnetic $J_3 = 3.0$ meV between third neighbours, and a very small $J_2 = 0.09$ meV between second neighbours. A biaxial single-ion anisotropy was required, with a collinear term $D^x = -0.77$ meV for the axis parallel to the aligned moment direction and a coplanar term $D^z=6.07$ meV for an axis approximately normal to the layered crystal planes.

Magnetically ordered and kagome quantum spin liquid states in the Zn-doped claringbullite series

Neutron scattering measurements have been performed on deuterated powder samples of claringbullite and Zn-doped claringbullite (Zn$_x$Cu$_{4-x}$(OD)$_{6}$FCl). At low temperatures, claringbullite Cu$_4$(OD)$_{6}$FCl forms a distorted pyrochlore lattice with long-range magnetic order and spin-wave-like magnetic excitations. Partial Zn doping leads to the nominal ZnCu$_3$(OD)$_{6}$FCl compound, a geometrically frustrated spin-1/2 kagome antiferromagnet that shows no transition to magnetic order down to 1.5 K. The magnetic excitations form a gapless continuum, a signature of fractional excitations in a quantum spin liquid.

Thermal Evolution of Dirac Magnons in the Honeycomb Ferromagnet CrBr$_3$

CrBr$_3$ is an excellent realization of the two-dimensional honeycomb ferromagnet, which offers a bosonic equivalent of graphene with Dirac magnons and topological character. We perform inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements using state-of-the-art instrumentation to update 50-year-old data, thereby enabling a definitive comparison both with recent experimental claims of a significant gap at the Dirac point and with theoretical predictions for thermal magnon renormalization. We demonstrate that CrBr$_3$ has next-neighbor $J_2$ and $J_3$ interactions approximately 5\% of $J_1$, an ideal Dirac magnon dispersion at the K point, and the associated signature of isospin winding. The magnon lifetime and the thermal band renormalization show the universal $T^2$ evolution expected from an interacting spin-wave treatment, but the measured dispersion lacks the predicted van Hove features, highlighting the need for a deeper theoretical analysis.

Composite spin and quadrupole wave in the ordered phase of Tb$_{2+x}$Ti$_{2-x}$O$_{7+y}$

The hidden ordered state of the frustrated pyrochlore oxide Tb$_{2+x}$Ti$_{2-x}$O$_{7+y}$ is possibly one of the two electric multipolar, or quadrupolar, states of the effective pseudospin-1/2 Hamiltonian derived from crystal-field ground state doublets of non-Kramers Tb$^{3+}$ ions. These long-range orders are antiparallel or parallel alignments of transverse pseudospin components representing electric quadrupole moments, which cannot be observed as magnetic Bragg reflections by neutron scattering. However pseudospin waves of these states are composite waves of the magnetic-dipole and electric-quadrupole moments, and can be partly observed by inelastic magnetic neutron scattering. We calculate these spin-quadrupole waves using linear spin-wave theory and discuss previously observed low-energy magnetic excitation spectra of a polycrystalline sample with $x = 0.005$ ($T_{\text{c}} = 0.5 $ K).

Magnetic structure and low temperature properties of geometrically frustrated SrNd$_2$O$_4$

We report the low-temperature properties of SrNd$_2$O$_4$, a geometrically frustrated magnet. Magnetisation and heat capacity measurements performed on polycrystalline samples indicate the appearance of a magnetically ordered state at $T_{\rm N}=2.28(4)$~K. Powder neutron diffraction measurements reveal that an \afm\ state with the propagation vector \QV\ is stabilised below this temperature. The magnetic order is incomplete, as only one of the two Nd$^{3+}$ sites carries a significant magnetic moment while the other site remains largely disordered. The presence of a disordered magnetic component below $T_{\rm N}$ is confirmed with polarised neutron diffraction measurements. In an applied magnetic field, the bulk properties measurements indicate a phase transition at about 30~kOe. We construct a tentative $H$-$T$ phase diagram of \sno\ from these measurements.

Experimental determination of the magnetic interactions of frustrated Cairo pentagon lattice materials

We present inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the Cairo pentagon lattice magnets Bi$_2$Fe$_4$O$_9$ and Bi$_4$Fe$_5$O$_{13}$F, supported by high field magnetisation measurements of Bi$_2$Fe$_4$O$_9$. Using linear spin wave theory and mean field analyses we determine the spin exchange interactions and single-ion anisotropy in these materials. The Cairo lattice is geometrically frustrated and consists of two inequivalent magnetic sites, both occupied by Fe$^{3+}$ ions and connected by two competing nearest neighbour interactions. We found that one of these interactions, coupling nearest neighbour spins on the three-fold symmetric sites, is extremely strong and antiferromagnetic. These strongly coupled dimers are then weakly coupled to a framework formed from spins occupying the other inequivalent site. In addition we found that the Fe$^{3+}$ $S=5/2$ spins have a non-negligible single-ion anisotropy, which manifests as a spin anisotropy gap in the neutron spectrum and a spin-flop transition in high field magnetisation measurements.

Fragmented monopole crystal, dimer entropy and Coulomb interactions in Dy$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$

Neutron scattering, specific heat and magnetisation measurements on both powders and single crystals reveal that Dy$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ realizes the fragmented monopole crystal state in which antiferromagnetic order and a Coulomb phase spin liquid co-inhabit. The measured residual entropy is that of a hard core dimer liquid, as predicted. Inclusion of Coulomb interactions allows for a quantitative description of both the thermodynamic data and the magnetisation dynamics, with the energy scale given by deconfined defects in the emergent ionic crystal. Our data reveal low energy excitations, as well as a large distribution of energy barriers down to low temperatures, while the magnetic response to an applied field suggests that domain wall pinning is important; results that call for further theoretical modelling.

Exchange Interactions Mediated by Non-Magnetic Cations in Double Perovskites

Establishing the physical mechanism governing exchange interactions is fundamental for exploring exotic phases such as the quantum spin liquids (QSLs) in real materials. In this work, we address exchange interactions in Sr2CuTe$_{1-x}$W$_{x}$O, a series of double perovskites that realize the spin-1/2 square lattice and were suggested to harbor a QSL ground state arising from random distribution of non-magnetic ions. Our {\it ab initio} multi-reference configuration interaction calculations show that replacing Te atoms with W atoms changes the dominant couplings from nearest to next-nearest neighbor explained by the crucial role of unoccupied states of non-magnetic ions in the super-superexchange mechanism. Combined with spin-wave theory simulations, our calculated exchange couplings provide an excellent description of the inelastic neutron scattering spectra of the end compounds, as well as explain the magnetic excitations in Sr2CuTe$_{0.5}$W$_{0.5}$O as emerging from the bond-disordered exchange couplings. Our results provide crucial understanding of the role of non-magnetic cations in exchange interactions paving the way to further exploration of QSL phases in bond-disordered materials.

Vesignieite: a $S = \frac{1}{2}$ kagome antiferromagnet with dominant third-neighbor exchange

The spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ kagome antiferromagnet is an archetypal frustrated system predicted to host a variety of exotic magnetic states. We show using neutron scattering measurements that deuterated vesignieite BaCu$_{3}$V$_{2}$O$_{8}$(OD)$_{2}$, a fully stoichiometric $S=1/2$ kagome magnet with $<$1% lattice distortion, orders magnetically at $T_{\mathrm{N}}=9$K into a multi-k coplanar variant of the predicted triple-k octahedral structure. We find this structure is stabilized by a dominant antiferromagnetic 3$^{\mathrm{rd}}$-neighbor exchange $J_3$ with minor 1$^{\mathrm{st}}$- or 2$^{\mathrm{nd}}$--neighbour exchange. The spin-wave spectrum is well described by a $J_3$-only model including a tiny symmetric exchange anisotropy.
