Adaptive altruistic strategy in cyclic models during an epidemic

We investigate a cyclic game system where organisms face an epidemic beyond being threatened by natural enemies. As a survival strategy, individuals of one out of the species usually safeguard themselves by approaching the enemies of their enemies and performing social distancing to escape contamination when an outbreak affects the neighbourhood. We simulate how the survival movement strategy to local epidemic surges must adapt if a pathogen mutation makes the disease deadlier. We study the spatial distribution of local outbreaks and observe the influence of disease mortality on individuals' spatial organisation. We show that adapting the survival movement strategy for a high mortality disease demands an altruistic behaviour of the organisms since their death risk increases. Despite weakening the disease transmission chain, which benefits the species, abandoning refuges provided by safeguarding social interaction increases the vulnerability to being eliminated in the cyclic game. Considering that not all individuals exhibit altruism, we find the relative growth in the species density as a function of the proportion of individuals behaving altruistically. Our results may be helpful for biologists and data scientists to understand how adaptive altruistic processes can affect population dynamics in complex systems.

The structures of embedded clusters in the Perseus, Serpens and Ophiuchus molecular clouds

The young stellar population data of the Perseus, Ophiuchus and Serpens molecular clouds are obtained from the Spitzer c2d legacy survey in order to investigate the spatial structure of embedded clusters using the nearest neighbour and minimum spanning tree method. We identify the embedded clusters in these clouds as density enhancements and analyse the clustering parameter Q with respect to source luminosity and evolutionary stage. This analysis shows that the older Class 2/3 objects are more centrally condensed than the younger Class 0/1 protostars, indicating that clusters evolve from an initial hierarchical configuration to a centrally condensed one. Only IC348 and the Serpens core, the older clusters in the sample, shows signs of mass segregation (indicated by the dependence of Q on the source magnitude), pointing to a significant effect of dynamical interactions after a few Myr. The structure of a cluster may also be linked to the turbulent energy in the natal cloud as the most centrally condensed cluster is found in the cloud with the lowest Mach number and vice versa. In general these results agree well with theoretical scenarios of star cluster formation by gravoturbulent fragmentation.

WFCAM, Spitzer-IRAC and SCUBA observations of the massive star forming region DR21/W75: II. Stellar content and star formation

Wide field near-infrared observations and Spitzer Space Telescope IRAC observations of the DR21/W75 star formation regions are presented. The photometric data are used to analyse the extinction, stellar content and clustering in the entire region by using standard methods. A young stellar population is identified all over the observed field, which is found to be distributed in embedded clusters that are surrounded by a distributed halo population extending over a larger projected area. The Spitzer/IRAC data are used to compute a spectral index value, "alpha", for each YSO in the field. We use these data to separate pure photospheres from disk excess sources. We find a small fraction of sources with "alpha" in excess of 2 to 3 (plus a handful with "alpha"~4), which is much higher than the values found in the low mass star forming region IC348 ("alpha" < 2). The sources with high values of "alpha" spatially coincide with the densest regions of the filaments and also with the sites of massive star formation. Star formation is found to be occuring in long filaments stretching to few parsecs that are fragmented over a scale of ~ 1 pc. The spatial distribution of young stars are found to be correlated with the filamentary nebulae that are prominently revealed by 8micron and 850micron observations. Five filaments are identified that appear to converge on a center that includes the DR21/DR21(OH) regions. The morphological pattern of filaments and clustering compare well with numerical simulations of star cluster formation by Bate et al. 2003.

Orthorhombic to tetragonal phase transition and superconductivity in the Ba2Cu3O4Cl2 compound

In this work we have investigated the orthorhombic to tetragonal phase transition in the Ba2Cu3O4Cl2 compound. This transition was observed by X-ray powder diffractometry carried out in samples heat treated between 700 and 750OC and also in samples with Ba2ZnCu2O4Cl2 composition. Results of X-ray diffractograms simulation confirm the phase transition. dc-Magnetization measurements performed in SQUID showed the existence of diamagnetism signal. The results suggest the existence of localized superconductivity and can explain the different magnetic properties reported in literature for the Ba2Cu3O4Cl2 compound.
