Robust Nearest Neighbour Retrieval Using Targeted Manifold Manipulation

Nearest-neighbour retrieval is central to classification and explainable-AI pipelines, but current practice relies on hand-tuning feature layers and distance metrics. We propose Targeted Manifold Manipulation-Nearest Neighbour (TMM-NN), which reconceptualises retrieval by assessing how readily each sample can be nudged into a designated region of the feature manifold; neighbourhoods are defined by a sample's responsiveness to a targeted perturbation rather than absolute geometric distance. TMM-NN implements this through a lightweight, query-specific trigger patch. The patch is added to the query image, and the network is weakly ``backdoored'' so that any input with the patch is steered toward a dummy class. Images similar to the query need only a slight shift and are classified as the dummy class with high probability, while dissimilar ones are less affected. By ranking candidates by this confidence, TMM-NN retrieves the most semantically related neighbours. Robustness analysis and benchmark experiments confirm this trigger-based ranking outperforms traditional metrics under noise and across diverse tasks.

Spin-phonon coupling suppressing the structural transition in perovskite-like oxide

Multifunctional properties in quantum systems require the interaction between different degrees of freedom. As such, spin-phonon coupling emerges as an ideal mechanism to tune multiferroicity, magnetism, and magnetoelectric response. In this letter, we demonstrate and explain, based on theoretical and experimental analyses, an unusual manifestation of spin-phonon coupling, i.e., prevention of a ferroelastic structural transition, and locking of high-temperature R-3m phase in a magnetically frustrated perovskite-like oxide Ba2NiTeO6. We present Ba2NiTeO6 as a prototype example among its family where long-range antiferromagnetic structure couples with a low-frequency Eg mode (at 55 cm-1) that exhibits a large anharmonicity. Our findings establish that spin-phonon coupling clearly suppresses the phonon anharmonicity preventing the structural phase transition from the R-3m to the C2/m phase in Ba2NiTeO6.

Lattice dynamics across the ferroelastic phase transition in Ba2ZnTeO6: A Raman and first-principles study

Structural phase transitions drive several unconventional phenomena including some illustrious ferroic attributes which are relevant for technological advancements. With this note, we have investigated the structural transition of perovskite-type trigonal Ba2ZnTeO6, across Tc ~ 150 K, which is also accompanied by a para- to ferroelastic transition. With the help of Raman spectroscopy and density-functional theory (DFT)-based calculations, here we report new intriguing observations associated with the phase transition in Ba2ZnTeO6 elucidating the lattice dynamics across the Tc. We have observed the presence of a central peak (quasi-elastic Rayleigh profile), huge softening in the soft mode, hysteretic phonon behavior, and signatures of coexistent phases. The existence of a central peak in Ba2ZnTeO6 is manifested by a sharp rise in the intensity of the Rayleigh profile in concomitant with the damping of the soft mode near Tc, shedding light on the lattice dynamics during the phase transition. While most of the phonon bands split below Tc confirming the phase transition, we have observed thermal hysteretic behavior of phonon modes that signifies the first-order nature of the transition and presence of coexisting phases, which are corroborated by our temperature-dependent x-ray diffraction and specific heat measurements. Further, an evidence of the concomitant structural transition appears in the form of huge softening in the thermal response of the soft phonon mode at ~ 31 cm-1 which is remarkable compared to the hitherto known behavior of soft modes in well-known ferroelectrics. This is further corroborated by our phonon calculations that show an unstable Eg-mode in the high-symmetry structure involving TeO6 octahedral rotation (with Ba and Zn translation) which later condenses into the C2/m low-symmetry phase.

Evolution of magnetic and transport properties in Cu doped pyrochlore iridate Eu2(Ir1-xCux)2O7

We have investigated the effect of Cu substitution in Eu2(Ir1-xCux)2O7 with the help of magnetic and transport property measurements. XPS measurement reveals that each Cu2+ converts Ir4+ to double amount of Ir5+ ions. The metal-insulator transition temperature (T_MI) is obtained around 120 K. In the insulating phase, at lower temperature below 50 K, the temperature dependent resistivity follows a power law dependence and the magnitude of the exponent increases with Cu concentrations. The temperature dependent thermopower is observed to follow the electrical resistivity down to 50 K, except for a sudden drop in thermopower at temperature below 50 K. We find negligible Hall voltage in the metallic regime of the samples but a sudden Hall voltage is developed below 50 K. We observe bifurcation in zero field cooled and field cooled (ZFC-FC) magnetization below irreversibility temperature, exchange bias and negative magnetoresistance at 3 K and the magnitude of all these properties increases with Cu concentrations. In the insulating region (below 6 K) there exists a linear specific heat and its coefficient decreases with Cu doping which indicates the reduction of spinon contribution with Cu doping.

Low temperature ferromagnetism, surface paramagnetism and exchange bias effect in nano-grained alpha-Fe1.4Ga0.6O3 oxide

The compound alpha-Fe1.4Ga0.6O3 has been prepared by mechanical alloying of alpha-Fe2O3 and Ga2O3 and subsequent heating of the mechanical alloyed samples in vacuum condition. Magnetic ordering of alpha-Fe2O3 has been modified by substitution of non-magnetic Ga atoms. The ferromagnetism in alpha-Fe1.4Ga0.6O3 is more soft and enhanced in comparison to alpha-Fe2O3. M\"ossbauer spectroscopy also confirmed enhanced ferromagnetic order in alpha-Fe1.4Ga0.6O3. The room temperature soft ferromagnetism by Ga substitution is interesting for designing alpha-Fe2O3 based unconventional ferromagnet, which is a great challenge to the materials scientists. The alpha-Fe1.4Ga0.6O3 samples also exhibited features of exchange bias, low temperature surface paramagnetism, and suppression of Morin transition. These features have been affected up to certain extent by the nano-sized grains of the samples.

Magnetic hysteresis loop as a probe to distinguish single layer from many layer graphitic structure

In this report we have pointed out that magnetic hysteresis loop can be used as a probe to distinguish a single layer from a many layer graphitic structure. Chemically we have synthesized graphitic oxide (GO) and reduced graphitic oxide (RGO) for this investigation. We observe ferromagnetic like hysteresis loops for both GO and RGO below a certain applied critical magnetic field and above this critical field we observe cross-over of the positive magnetization to negative magnetization leading to diamagnetic behaviour. This cross-over is more dominant for the case of many layer graphitic structure. Upon annealing of GO in air the critical cross-over field decreases and the magnetization increases for multilayer graphitic structure. Possible reasons for all these observations and phenomena is presented here.

Anamolous reduction of magnetic coercivity of graphene oxide and reduced graphene oxide upon cooling

In this report we present the temperature evolution of magnetic coercivity of graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (RGO). We report an anamolous decrease in coercivity of GO and RGO with decreasing temperature. We could explain this anamolous behavior invoking the inherent presence of ripple in graphene. We observe antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic behavior at room temperature for GO and RGO respectively, but at low temperatures both shows paramagnetic behavior.

Aspects of High Energy Nuclear Physics :The Higgs

Although the Higgs particle is at the centre-stage of the Standard Model of particle physics and in many other related models, it has not been experimentally found so far. One of the major objectives of the Large Hadron Collider experiments is to detect the Higgs. In this article, we highlight the problems encountered in the Higgs sector of particle physics and their possible solutions, with particular emphasis on the Little Higgs Model. We also indicate the reaction channels by which the Higgs can possibly be found in high energy accelerator experiments.

Cooperative ordering of superparamagnetic ZnO nanograins

In this paper we have tried to understand the precise nature of magnetism in ZnO nanoparticles. Cooling field dependence of magnetic hysteresis and coercive field was observed for high temperature annealed sample indicating cooperative magnetic correlation and ordering within the agglomerated nanograins. The increasing induced internal magnetic field along the direction of external field for the high temperature annealed sample has been fitted with the modified Weiss-Brillouin model indicating emergence of long range intergrain interaction among the superparamagnetic grains. We propose a simple idea that explains the reduction of magnetisation due to vortex state like flux closure situation.

How Gold nanoparticle acquires magnetism? - Formation of large orbital moment at the interface

In this paper, we have tried to find out the origin of magnetism in Gold nanoparticles (Au- NPs). We observe that upon incorporating Gold nanoparticles (Au-NPs) in Fe3O4 nanoparticle medium the net magnetisation increases compared to the pure Fe3O4 nanoparticle medium. This increase of magnetization can be attributed to the large orbital magnetic moment formation at the Au/magnetic particle interface indicating that magnetism observed in Au-NPs is an interfacial effect. This interfacial effect has been supported by the observation of sudden transition from positive saturated magnetisation to a negative diamagnetic contribution as a function of magnetic field on citrate coated gold Au-NPs.

Enhanced magnetism, memory and aging in Gold-Iron oxide nanoparticle composites

In this report we present systematic magnetic studies of pure iron oxide nanoparticles and gold iron oxide nanocomposite with increasing Au particle size/content. For the magnetic studies of these samples we have measured: (1) zero field cooled (ZFC) and field cooled (FC) magnetization, (2) ac susceptibility, (3) magnetization vs field at various temperatures, (4) thermoremanant magnetization relaxation (TRM) and zero field cooled magnetization relaxation (ZFCM) at fixed temperature for various wait times tw for studying the aging effect, (5) magnetization memory effect and (6) exchange bias as a function of cooling field. The detailed magnetic measurement analysis indicates that the pure Fe3O4 nanoparticles sample behaves like a superparamagnet and on incorporation of gold (Au) nanoparticles the nanocomposite system slowly evolves from superparamagnetic to superspin glass state. The memory and aging effect enhances with the increase of the Au nanoparticle size/content. The most important observation in this study is the enhancement of magnetization with the incorporation of Au nanoparticles. The enhancement increases with the increase in the Au content in the nanocomposite. We have explained the cause of this enhancement of magnetization as due to large orbital magnetic moment formation at the Au/magnetic particle interface.

Broken electroweak phase at high temperature in the Littlest Higgs model with T-parity

We have examined in detail the nonrestoration of symmetry at high temperature in a finite-temperature Littlest Higgs model, without and with T-parity, by evaluating the one-loop-order finite-temperature integrals of the effective potential numerically, without the high-temperature approximation, We observe that in the model without T-parity it is not possible to find a transition temperature within the allowed temperature range of the model (0<T<4f) if the UV completion factors are those which give the Standard Model electroweak minimum, as the effective potential always increases with temperature in the positive direction. However, in the case of the model with T-parity, it is possible to find a transition temperature with the same set of UV completion factors, as, with the increase of temperature, the effective potential decreases in magnitude in the positive side, becomes negative, and increases in magnitude in the negative side, indicating symmetry breaking at high temperature. This type of symmetry nonrestoration at high temperature has been observed earlier in some models involving pseudo Nambu-Goldstone bosons. The behaviour of the global structure of the effective potential with T-parity in the theory indicates a strong first order electroweak phase transition, conducive to baryogenesis in the early universe.

Impurity Substitution in Bismuth and Thallium Cuprates: Suppression of T_c and Estimation of Pseudogap

Suppression of T_c in bilayer bismuth and thallium cuprates, by substitution of Co impurities at Cu sites, are taken for examination. T_c suppression data on differently doped Bi2212 and Tl2212 are analysed within the unitary pair-breaking formalism due to Abrikosov and Gorkov, by fitting data points to a phenomenological relation valid for weak coupling d-wave superconductors. Values of the pseudogap magnitude at each doping are thereby estimated within a "fermi-level density of states suppression" picture. Pseudogap magnitude from our estimation is observed to have a correspondence with a related characteristic temperature T^\star obtained by thermoelectric power measurements. Effects of pseudogap, on the density of states, is studied by calculating the susceptibility which shows a broad peak at high temperature. This peak feature in susceptibility is indicative of an unusual metallic state which could further be explored by systematic other measurements.
