Universal orbital and magnetic structures in infinite-layer nickelates

We conducted a comparative study of the rare-earth infinite-layer nickelates films, RNiO2 (R = La, Pr, and Nd) using resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS). We found that the gross features of the orbital configurations are essentially the same, with minor variations in the detailed hybridization. For low-energy excitations, we unambiguously confirm the presence of damped magnetic excitations in all three compounds. By fitting to a linear spin-wave theory, comparable spin exchange coupling strengths and damping coefficients are extracted, indicating a universal magnetic structure in the infinite-layer nickelates. Interestingly, while signatures of a charge order are observed in LaNiO2 in the quasi-elastic region of the RIXS spectrum, it is absent in NdNiO2 and PrNiO2. This prompts further investigation into the universality and the origins of charge order within the infinite-layer inickelates.

Spontaneous supercrystal formation during a strain-engineered metal-insulator transition

Mott metal-insulator transitions possess electronic, magnetic, and structural degrees of freedom promising next generation energy-efficient electronics. We report a previously unknown, hierarchically ordered state during a Mott transition and demonstrate correlated switching of functional electronic properties. We elucidate in-situ formation of an intrinsic supercrystal in a Ca2RuO4 thin film. Machine learning-assisted X-ray nanodiffraction together with electron microscopy reveal multi-scale periodic domain formation at and below the film transition temperature (TFilm ~ 200-250 K) and a separate anisotropic spatial structure at and above TFilm. Local resistivity measurements imply an intrinsic coupling of the supercrystal orientation to the material's anisotropic conductivity. Our findings add an additional degree of complexity to the physical understanding of Mott transitions, opening opportunities for designing materials with tunable electronic properties.

Encoding multistate charge order and chirality in endotaxial heterostructures

High-density phase change memory (PCM) storage is proposed for materials with multiple intermediate resistance states, which have been observed in 1$T$-TaS$_2$ due to charge density wave (CDW) phase transitions. However, the metastability responsible for this behavior makes the presence of multistate switching unpredictable in TaS$_2$ devices. Here, we demonstrate the fabrication of nanothick verti-lateral $H$-TaS$_2$/1$T$-TaS$_2$ heterostructures in which the number of endotaxial metallic $H$-TaS$_2$ monolayers dictates the number of resistance transitions in 1$T$-TaS$_2$ lamellae near room temperature. Further, we also observe optically active heterochirality in the CDW superlattice structure, which is modulated in concert with the resistivity steps, and we show how strain engineering can be used to nucleate these polytype conversions. This work positions the principle of endotaxial heterostructures as a promising conceptual framework for reliable, non-volatile, and multi-level switching of structure, chirality, and resistance.
