Thin film extensional flow of a transversely isotropic viscous fluid

Many biological materials such as cervical mucus and collagen gel possess a fibrous micro-structure. This micro-structure affects the emergent mechanical properties of the material, and hence the functional behaviour of the system. We consider the canonical problem of stretching a thin sheet of transversely-isotropic viscous fluid as a simplified version of the spinnbarkeit test for cervical mucus. We propose a novel solution to the model constructed by Green & Friedman by manipulating the model to a form amenable to arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian techniques. The system of equations, reduced by exploiting the slender nature of the sheet, are solved numerically and we discover that the bulk properties of the sheet are controlled by an effective viscosity dependent on the evolving angle of the fibres. In addition, we confirm a previous conjecture by demonstrating that the centre-line of the sheet need not be flat, and perform a short timescale analysis to capture the full behaviour of the centre-line.

Effect of inertial lift on a spherical particle suspended in flow through a curved duct

We develop a model of the forces on a spherical particle suspended in flow through a curved duct under the assumption that the particle Reynolds number is small. This extends an asymptotic model of inertial lift force previously developed to study inertial migration in straight ducts. Of particular interest is the existence and location of stable equilibria within the cross-sectional plane towards which particles migrates. The Navier-Stokes equations determine the hydrodynamic forces acting on a particle. A leading order model of the forces within the cross-sectional plane is obtained through the use of a rotating coordinate system and a perturbation expansion in the particle Reynolds number of the disturbance flow. We predict the behaviour of neutrally buoyant particles at low flow rates and examine the variation in focusing position with respect to particle size and bend radius, independent of the flow rate. In this regime, the lateral focusing position of particles approximately collapses with respect to a dimensionless parameter dependent on three length scales, specifically the particle radius, duct height, and duct bend radius. Additionally, a trapezoidal shaped cross-section is considered in order to demonstrate how changes in the cross-section design influence the dynamics of particles.

Approximation of Rough Functions

For given $p\in\lbrack1,\infty]$ and $g\in L^{p}\mathbb{(R)}$, we establish the existence and uniqueness of solutions $f\in L^{p}(\mathbb{R)}$, to the equation \[ f(x)-af(bx)=g(x), \] where $a\in\mathbb{R}$, $b\in\mathbb{R} \setminus \{0\}$, and $\left\vert a\right\vert \neq\left\vert b\right\vert ^{1/p}$. Solutions include well-known nowhere differentiable functions such as those of Bolzano, Weierstrass, Hardy, and many others. Connections and consequences in the theory of fractal interpolation, approximation theory, and Fourier analysis are established.
