Search for gamma-ray spectral lines from dark matter annihilation with the H.E.S.S. Inner Galaxy Survey

Spectral gamma-ray line features are expected as key signatures from dark matter (DM) annihilations of TeV-scale particle DM. Observations of the Galactic Centre with atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes are unique to probe thermal-relic TeV particle DM, well beyond the reach of direct detection and collider searches. We report here on the search for line signals in very-high-energy gamma rays using data from the Inner Galaxy Survey, consisting of 546 hours of H.E.S.S. observations of the inner few degrees of the Galactic Centre. No significant signal is detected. We then compute the exclusion limits on the annihilation line cross section $\langle \sigma v \rangle_{\rm line}$, with a two-dimensional log-likelihood ratio test statistics, exploiting spectral and spatial features of the DM signal. Assuming an Einasto DM density profile for the Milky Way, our results provide the most constraining limits so far, reaching $\langle \sigma v \rangle_{\rm line} = 2.3$ $\times$ $10^{-28}$ and $2.4 \times$ $10^{-27}$ cm$^3$s$^{-1}$ for DM masses of 1 and 10 TeV, respectively. The present limits are used to constrain the widely searched Wino, Higgsino and Quintuplet models. For the first time, thermal Higgsino DM is probed for DM Milky Way models.

Search for long-term variability of HESS J1745-290

At the center of our Galaxy lies the bright {\gamma}-ray point-like source HESS J1745-290, which is compatible in position with Sgr A star, although an association between the two remains uncertain. Using data obtained between 2004 and 2019 with the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) on the Galactic center region, we studied the variability of HESS J1745-290 over 353 hours of observations collected over 16 years, representing the largest dataset gathered yet on this region at TeV energies. We performed a 3D maximum-likelihood analysis of the central source and the diffuse {\gamma}-ray emission in the Galactic center region. This analysis allowed us to extract the spectral and morphological intrinsic behavior of the two components. By performing this analysis on an annual basis, we derived the light curve of HESS J1745-290 and the diffuse emission over the past 16 years. The 3D maximum-likelihood analysis method allowed us to separate the central source from the overlapping diffuse emission, enabling a recalibration of the former by the latter and alleviating some of the systematic effects. We find no long-term or yearly variability. We also provide an estimate of the sensitivity of H.E.S.S. to variation of this specific source over 16 years. We rule out any yearly gamma-ray flux variation of this source larger than 30 percent, as well as any linear flux variation exceeding 30% over this time period.

H.E.S.S. observations of composite Seyfert-starburst galaxies

Context: Composite galaxies that contain both Seyfert and starburst components may produce very high-energy (VHE; >100 GeV) gamma-ray emission at a wide range of spatial scales, from a few Schwarzschild radii of a supermassive black hole to dimensions of kiloparsec-size jet-driven outflows. In addition to supernova remnants, various sources have been suggested to explain data collected on composite galaxies, including multi-messenger neutrino and ultra-high-energy cosmic-ray data. Aims: The closest composite Seyfert-starburst galaxies (NGC 1068, the Circinus galaxy, and NGC 4945) are observed with the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) to provide constraints on cosmic-ray populations in these systems. Methods: Data obtained in H.E.S.S. observations have been analyzed to search for VHE gamma-ray counterparts to the GeV gamma-ray signals detected with Fermi-LAT and for potential spectral components in the VHE range. Results: No significant signals have been found in these H.E.S.S. data. Upper limits on the VHE gamma-ray fluxes were applied to constrain theoretical models involving different spectral components.

Using SRG/eROSITA to estimate soft proton fluxes at the ATHENA detectors

Context: Environmental soft protons have affected the performance of the X-ray detectors on board Chandra and XMM-Newton, and they pose a threat for future high energy astrophysics missions with larger aperture, such as ATHENA. Aims: We aim at estimating soft proton fluxes at the ATHENA detectors independently of any modelisation of the external fluxes in the space environment. We analysed the background data measured by eROSITA on board SRG, and with the help of simulations we defined a range of values for the potential count-rate of quiet-time soft protons focused through the mirror shells. We used it to derive an estimate of soft proton fluxes at the ATHENA detectors, assuming ATHENA in the same L2-orbit as SRG. Results: The scaling, based on the computed proton transmission yields of the optics and optical/thermal filters of eROSITA and ATHENA, indicates that the soft proton induced WFI and X-IFU backgrounds could be expected close to the requirement. Conclusions: No soft proton fluxes detrimental to the observations have been suffered by eROSITA during its all-sky survey in orbit around L2. Regardless of where ATHENA will be placed (L1 or L2), our analysis suggests that increasing somewhat the thickness of the WFI optical blocking filter, e.g. by 30%, would help to reduce the soft proton flux onto the detector, in case the planned magnetic diverters perform worse than expected due to soft proton neutralisation at the mirror level.

Chaotic properties of spin lattices near second-order phase transitions

We perform a numerical investigation of the Lyapunov spectra of chaotic dynamics in lattices of classical spins in the vicinity of second-order ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phase transitions. On the basis of this investigation, we identify a characteristic of the shape of the Lyapunov spectra, the "G-index", which exhibits a sharp peak as a function of temperature at the phase transition, provided the order parameter is capable of sufficiently strong dynamic fluctuations. As a part of this work, we also propose a general numerical algorithm for determining the temperature in many-particle systems, where kinetic energy is not defined.

Energy dependent $\ell$-wave confinement-induced resonances

The universal aspects of two-body collisions in the presence of a harmonic confinement are investigated for both bosons and fermions. The main focus of this study are the confinement-induced resonances (CIR) which are attributed to different angular momentum states $\ell$ and we explicitly show that in alkaline collisions only four universal $\ell$-wave CIRs emerge. Going beyond the single mode regime the energy dependence of $\ell$-wave CIRs is studied. In particular we show that all the $\ell$-wave CIRs may emerge even when the underlying two-body potential cannot support any bound state. We observe that the intricate dependence on the energy yields resonant features where the colliding system within the confining potential experiences an effective free-space scattering. Our analysis is done within the framework of the generalized $K$-matrix theory and the relevant analytical calculations are in very good agreement with the corresponding ab initio numerical scattering simulations.

Lyapunov instabilities in lattices of interacting classical spins at infinite temperature

We numerically investigate Lyapunov instabilities for one-, two- and three-dimensional lattices of interacting classical spins at infinite temperature. We obtain the largest Lyapunov exponents for a very large variety of nearest-neighbor spin-spin interactions and complete Lyapunov spectra in a few selected cases. We investigate the dependence of the largest Lyapunov exponents and whole Lyapunov spectra on the lattice size and find that both quickly become size-independent. Finally, we analyze the dependence of the largest Lyapunov exponents on the anisotropy of spin-spin interaction with the particular focus on the difference between bipartite and nonbipartite lattices.

Largest Lyapunov exponents for lattices of interacting classical spins

We investigate how generic the onset of chaos in interacting many-body classical systems is in the context of lattices of classical spins with nearest neighbor anisotropic couplings. Seven large lattices in different spatial dimensions were considered. For each lattice, more than 2000 largest Lyapunov exponents for randomly sampled Hamiltonians were numerically computed. Our results strongly suggest the absence of integrable nearest-neighbor Hamiltonians for the infinite lattices except for the trivial Ising case. In the vicinity of the Ising case, the largest Lyapunov exponents exhibit a power-law growth, while further away they become rather weakly sensitive to the Hamiltonian anisotropy. We also provide an analytical derivation of these results.
