Parametrically-stimulated recovery of a microwave signal using standing spin-wave modes of a magnetic film

The phenomenon of storage and parametrically-stimulated recovery of a microwave signal in a ferrite film has been studied both experimentally and theoretically. The microwave signal is stored in the form of standing spin-wave modes existing in the film due to its finite thickness. Signal recovery is performed by means of frequency-selective amplification of one of these standing modes by double- requency parametric pumping process. The time of recovery, as well as the duration and magnitude of the recovered signal, depend on the timing and amplitudes of both the input and pumping pulses. A mean-field theory of the recovery process based on the competitive interaction of the signal-induced standing spin-wave mode and thermal magnons with the parametric pumping field is developed and compared to the experimental data.

Formation of guided spin-wave bullets in ferrimagnetic film stripes

The formation of quasi-2D nonlinear spin-wave eigenmodes in longitudinally magnetized stripes of a ferrimagnetic film, so-called guided spin-wave bullets, was experimentally observed by using time- and space-resolved Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy and confirmed by numerical simulation. They represent stable spin-wave packets propagating along a waveguide structure, for which both transversal instability and interaction with the side edges of the waveguide are important. The experiments and the numerical simulation of the evolution of the spin-wave excitations show that the shape of the formed packets and their behavior are strongly influenced by the confinement conditions. The discovery of these modes demonstrates the existence of quasi-stable nonlinear solutions in the transition regime between one-dimensional and two-dimensional wave packet propagation.

Scattering of backward spin waves in a one-dimensional magnonic crystal

Scattering of backward volume magnetostatic spin waves from a one-dimensional magnonic crystal, realized by a grating of shallow grooves etched into the surface of an yttrium-iron garnet film, was experimentally studied. Rejection frequency bands were clearly observed. The rejection efficiency and the frequency width of the rejection bands increase with increasing groove depth. A theoretical model based on the analogy of a spin-wave film-waveguide with a microwave transmission line was used to interpret the obtained experimental results.

Modification of the thermal spin-wave spectrum in a Ni81Fe19 stripe by a domain wall

The thermal spin-wave distribution in a Ni81Fe19 stripe with an asymmetric transverse domain wall has been investigated using Brillouin light scattering microscopy. Clear evidence has been found that the existence of the domain wall influences the spin-wave distribution of the thermal modes. The thermal spin-wave modes are quantized due to the confinement in radial direction. They vanish near the domain wall and a new mode evolves inside this complex domain wall structure. This effect is attributed to a change of the effective internal field in the domain wall region. The experimental results agree well with static and dynamic micromagnetic simulations.

Dissipation characteristics of quantized spin waves in nano-scaled magnetic ring structures

The spatial profiles and the dissipation characteristics of spin-wave quasi-eigenmodes are investigated in small magnetic Ni$_{81}$Fe$_{19}$ ring structures using Brillouin light scattering microscopy. It is found, that the decay constant of a mode decreases with increasing mode frequency. Indications for a contribution of three-magnon processes to the dissipation of higher-order spin-wave quasi-eigenmodes are found.

Phase reciprocity of spin-wave excitation by a microstrip antenna

Using space-, time- and phase-resolved Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy we investigate the difference in phase of the two counterpropagating spin waves excited by the same microwave microstrip transducer. These studies are performed both for backward volume magnetostatic waves and magnetostatic surface waves in an in-plane magnetized yttrium iron garnet film. The experiments show that for the backward volume magnetostatic spin waves (which are reciprocal and excited symmetrically in amplitude) there is a phase difference of $π$ associated with the excitation process and thus the phase symmetry is distorted. On the contrary, for the magnetostatic surface spin waves (which are non-reciprocal and unsymmetrical in amplitude) the phase symmetry is preserved (there is no phase difference between the two waves associated with the excitation). Theoretical analysis confirms this effect.

Microwave spectral analysis by means of non-resonant parametric recovery of spin-wave signals in a thin magnetic film

We report on the storage and non-resonant parametric recovery of microwave signals carried by a dipolar surface spin-wave pulse in a thin ferrimagnetic film. The information about the intensity of the spectral components of the signal within a narrow frequency band is saved due to the excitation of a dipolar-exchange standing spin-wave mode across the film thickness and is afterwards restored by means of parametric amplification of this mode. The intensity of the restored signal measured for varying shifts between the signal carrier frequency and half of the pumping frequency, which is equal to the frequency of the standing mode, reveals information about the entire frequency spectrum of the input microwave signal.

Direct observation of domain wall structures in curved permalloy wires containing an anti-notch

The formation and field response of head-to-head domain walls in curved permalloy wires, fabricated to contain a single anti-notch, have been investigated using Lorentz microscopy. High spatial resolution maps of the vector induction distribution in domain walls close to the anti-notch have been derived and compared with micromagnetic simulations. In wires of 10 nm thickness the walls are typically of a modified asymmetric transverse wall type. Their response to applied fields tangential to the wire at the anti-notch location was studied. The way the wall structure changes depends on whether the field moves the wall away from or further into the notch. Higher fields are needed and much more distorted wall structures are observed in the latter case, indicating that the anti-notch acts as an energy barrier for the domain wall.

Realization of XNOR and NAND spin-wave logic gates

We demonstrate the functionality of spin-wave logic XNOR and NAND gates based on a Mach-Zehnder type interferometer which has arms implemented as sections of ferrite film spin-wave waveguides. Logical input signals are applied to the gates by varying either the phase or the amplitude of the spin waves in the interferometer arms. This phase or amplitude variation is produced by Oersted fields of dc current pulses through conductors placed on the surface of the magnetic films.

Influence of the L21 ordering degree on the magnetic properties in Co2MnSi Heusler films

We report on the influence of the improved L21 ordering degree on the magnetic properties of Co2MnSi Heusler films. Different fractions of the L21 phase are obtained by different post-growth annealing temperatures ranging from 350 degC to 500 degC. Room temperature magneto-optical Kerr effect measurements reveal an increase of the coercivity at an intermediate annealing temperature of 425 degC, which is a fingerprint of an increased number of pinning centers at this temperature. Furthermore, Brillouin light scattering studies show that the improvement of the L21 order in the Co2MnSi films is correlated with a decrease of the saturation magnetization by about 9%. The exchange stiffness constant of Co2MnSi, however, increases by about 8% when the L21 order is improved. Moreover, we observe a drop of the cubic anisotropy constant K1 by a factor of 10 for an increasing amount of the L21 phase.

Resonant scattering of spin waves from a region of inhomogeneous magnetic field in a ferromagnetic film

The transmission of a dipole-dominated spin wave in a ferromagnetic film through a localised inhomogeneity in the form of a magnetic field produced by a dc current through a wire placed on the film surface was studied experimentally and theoretically. It was shown that the amplitude and phase of the transmitted wave can be simultaneously affected by the current induced field, a feature that will be relevant for logic based on spin wave transport. The direction of the current creates either a barrier or well for spin wave transmission. The main observation is that the current dependence of the amplitude of the spin wave transmitted through the well inhomogeneity is non-monotonic. The dependence has a minimum and an additional maximum. A theory was constructed to clarify the nature of the maximum. It shows that the transmission of spin waves through the inhomogeneity can be considered as a scattering process and that the additional maximum is a scattering resonance.

Formation of quasi-solitons in transverse confined ferromagnetic film media

The formation of quasi-2D spin-wave waveforms in longitudinally magnetized stripes of ferrimagnetic film was observed by using time- and space-resolved Brillouin light scattering technique. In the linear regime it was found that the confinement decreases the amplitude of dynamic magnetization near the lateral stripe edges. Thus, the so-called effective dipolar pinning of dynamic magnetization takes place at the edges. In the nonlinear regime a new stable spin wave packet propagating along a waveguide structure, for which both transversal instability and interaction with the side walls of the waveguide are important was observed. The experiments and a numerical simulation of the pulse evolution show that the shape of the formed waveforms and their behavior are strongly influenced by the confinement.

Ion beam induced modification of exchange interaction and spin-orbit coupling in the Co$_2$FeSi Heusler compound

A Co$_2$FeSi (CFS) film with L2$_1$ structure was irradiated with different fluences of 30 keV Ga$^+$ ions. Structural modifications were subsequently studied using the longitudinal (LMOKE) and quadratic (QMOKE) magneto-optical Kerr effect. Both the coercivity and the LMOKE amplitude were found to show a similar behavior upon irradiation: they are nearly constant up to ion fluences of $\approx6\times10^{15}$ ion/cm$^2$, while they decrease with further increasing fluences and finally vanish at a fluence of $\approx9\times10^{16}$ ion/cm$^2$, when the sample becomes paramagnetic. However, contrary to this behavior, the QMOKE signal nearly vanishes even for the smallest applied fluence of $3\times10^{14}$ ion/cm$^2$. We attribute this reduction of the QMOKE signal to an irradiation-induced degeneration of second or higher order spin-orbit coupling, which already happens at small fluences of 30 keV Ga$^+$ ions. On the other hand, the reduction of coercivity and LMOKE signal with high ion fluences is probably caused by a reduction of the exchange interaction within the film material.

Huge quadratic magneto-optical Kerr effect and magnetization reversal in the Co$_2$FeSi Heusler compound

Co$_2$FeSi(100) films with L2$_1$ structure deposited onto MgO(100) were studied exploiting both longitudinal (LMOKE) and quadratic (QMOKE) magneto-optical Kerr effect. The films exhibit a huge QMOKE signal with a maximum contribution of up to 30 mdeg, which is the largest QMOKE signal in reflection that has been measured thus far. This large value is a fingerprint of an exceptionally large spin-orbit coupling of second or higher order. The Co$_2$FeSi(100) films exhibit a rather large coercivity of 350 and 70 Oe for film thicknesses of 22 and 98 nm, respectively. Despite the fact that the films are epitaxial, they do not provide an angular dependence of the anisotropy and the remanence in excess of 1% and 2%, respectively.

Magnetic anisotropies and magnetization reversal of the Co$_2$Cr$_{0.6}$Fe$_{0.4}$Al Heusler compound

Magnetic anisotropies and magnetization reversal properties of the epitaxial Heusler compound Co$_2$Cr$_{0.6}$Fe$_{0.4}$Al (CCFA) deposited on Fe and Cr buffer layers are studied. Both samples exhibit a growth-induced fourfold anisotropy, and magnetization reversal occurs through the formation of stripy domains or 90 degree domains. During rotational magnetometric scans the sample deposited on Cr exhibits about 2 degree sharp peaks in the angular dependence of the coercive field, which are oriented along the hard axis directions. These peaks are a consequence of the specific domain structure appearing in this particular measurement geometry. A corresponding feature in the sample deposited on Fe is not observed.

All-optical probe of precessional magnetization dynamics in exchange biased NiFe/FeMn bilayers

An internal anisotropy pulse field is launched by an 8.3 ps short laser excitation, which triggers precessional magnetization dynamics of a polycrystalline NiFe/FeMn exchange bias system on the picosecond timescale. Due to the excitation the unidirectional anisotropy and, thus, the exchange coupling across the interface between the ferromagnetic and the antiferromagnetic layer is reduced, leading to a fast reduction of the exchange bias field and to a dramatic increase of the zero-field susceptibility. The fast optical unpinning is followed by a slower recovery of the interfacial exchange coupling dominated by spin-lattice and heat flow relaxation with a time constant of the order of 160 ps. The measured picosecond time evolution of the exchange decoupling and restoration is interpreted as an anisotropy pulse field giving rise to fast precessional magnetization dynamics of the ferromagnetic layer. The strength of the internal pulse field and even the initial magnetization deflection direction from the equilibrium orientation can be controlled by the absorbed photons. The dependence of the effective Gilbert damping on both small and large angle precessional motion was studied, yielding that both cases can be modeled with reasonable accuracy within the Landau-Lifshitz and Gilbert framework.

Spin-lattice relaxation phenomena in manganite La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 thin films

Time-resolved magneto-optics was used to study spin-lattice relaxation dynamics in thin epitaxial La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 films. Two distinct recovery regimes of the ferromagnetic order can be resolved upon photoexcitation, which manifest themselves by two different relaxation times. A pump pulse energy independent spin-lattice relaxation time can be deduced. Due to a weak spin-orbit coupling in manganites this spin-lattice relaxation time is much longer than in ferromagnetic metals. Heat flow into the substrate sets the ultimate recovery speed of the ferromagnetic order and allows for a determination of heat diffusion properties of manganite films.

On the mechanism of irradiation enhanced exchange bias

By means of layer resolved ion irradiation the mechanisms involved in the irradiation driven modifications of the exchange bias effect in NiFe/FeMn bilayers have been investigated. It is shown that not only the locations of the defects but also the magnetic coupling between both layers during the irradiation process is of crucial importance. This requires an extension of current models accounting for defects in exchange bias systems.
