Relativistic Effects in Spin Correlations Induced by QED Scattering and Wigner Rotations

We study the relativistic nature of the interactions that, at tree level, generate spin correlations between two electrons in M\o ller scattering, as well as in an extended process involving a witness particle $C$. The corresponding processes, $e^{-}e^{-}\rightarrow e^{-}e^{-}$ and $e^{-}e^{-}C\rightarrow e^{-}e^{-}C$, are analyzed both in the center-of-mass frame and, for the former process, in a Lorentz-boosted frame where Wigner rotations arise. It is found that, through a nonrelativistic approximation of the scattering amplitudes, dipole-dipole and current-dipole interactions are responsible for the emergence of these correlations. This is evidenced by the variation of the von Neumann entropy of one electron for initially separable states, and of $C$ for an initially prepared three-particle entangled W-state. In Wigner rotations, the invariance of entropy under local unitary transformations is maintained at the expense of the emergence of quantum coherence in the density matrix at large rapidities. As a consequence, the final states of both particles are evaluated and shown to encode information about the scattering process through their spin expectation values. This framework is then used to comment on the correlations in the inelastic process $e^{-}e^{+}\rightarrow\mu^{-}\mu^{+}$, for which some research has reported differing results.

Entanglement and scattering in quantum electrodynamics: S-matrix information from an entangled spectator particle

We consider a general quantum field relativistic scattering involving two half spin fermions, $A$ and $B$, which are initially entangled with another fermion $C$ that does not participate in the scattering dynamics. We construct general expressions for the reduced spin matrices for the out-state considering a general tripartite spin-entangled state. In particular we study an inelastic QED process at tree-level, namely $e^-e^+\rightarrow \mu^- \mu^+$ and a half spin fermion $C$ as an spectator particle which can be entangled to the $AB$ system in the following ways: W state, GHZ state, $|\text{A}^\alpha \rangle \otimes |\Psi^{\pm} \rangle_{\text{BC}}$ and $|\text{A}^\alpha \rangle \otimes |\Phi^{\pm} \rangle_{\text{BC}}$, where $\{|\Psi^{\pm} \rangle,|\Phi^{\pm} \rangle\}$ are the Bell basis states and $|\text{A}^\alpha \rangle$ is a spin superposition state of system $A$. We calculate the von-Neumann entropy variation before and after the scattering for the particle $C$ and show that spin measurements in $C$ contain numerical information about the total cross section of the process. We compare the initial states W and GHZ as well as study the role played by the parameter $\alpha$ in the evaluation of the entropy variations and the cross section encoded in the spectator particle.

Two-loop renormalisation of gauge theories in $4D$ Implicit Regularisation and connections to dimensional methods

We compute the two-loop $β$-function of scalar and spinorial quantum electrodynamics as well as pure Yang-Mills and quantum chromodynamics using the background field method in a fully quadridimensional setup using Implicit Regularization (IREG). Moreover, a thorough comparison with dimensional approaches such as conventional dimensional regularization (CDR) and dimensional reduction (DRED) is presented. Subtleties related to Lorentz algebra contractions/symmetric integrations inside divergent integrals as well as renormalisation schemes are carefully discussed within IREG where the renormalisation constants are fully defined as basic divergent integrals to arbitrary loop order. Moreover, we confirm the hypothesis that momentum routing invariance in the loops of Feynman diagrams implemented via setting well-defined surface terms to zero deliver non-abelian gauge invariant amplitudes within IREG just as it has been proven for abelian theories.

May the four be with you: Novel IR-subtraction methods to tackle NNLO calculations

In this report, we present a discussion about different frameworks to perform precise higher-order computations for high-energy physics. These approaches implement novel strategies to deal with infrared and ultraviolet singularities in quantum field theories. A special emphasis is devoted to the local cancellation of these singularities, which can enhance the efficiency of computations and lead to discover novel mathematical properties in quantum field theories.

Gauge-covariant diagonalization of $π$-$a_1$ mixing and the resolution of a low energy theorem

Using a recently proposed gauge covariant diagonalization of $πa_1$-mixing we show that the low energy theorem $F^π=e f_π^2 F^{3π}$ of current algebra, relating the anomalous form factor $F_{γ\to π^+π^0π^-} = F^{3π}$ and the anomalous neutral pion form factor $F_{π^0 \to γγ}=F^π$, is fulfilled in the framework of the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model, solving a long standing problem encountered in the extension including vector and axial-vector mesons. At the heart of the solution is the presence of a $γπ{\bar q} q $ vertex which is absent in the conventional treatment of diagonalization and leads to a deviation from the vector meson dominance (VMD) picture. It contributes to a gauge invariant anomalous tri-axial (AAA) vertex as a pure surface term.

Low-energy theorem for $γ\to 3π$: surface terms against $πa_1$-mixing

We reconsider the contribution due to $πa_1$-mixing to the anomalous $γ\toπ^+π^0π^-$ amplitude from the standpoint of the low-energy theorem $F^π=e f_π^2 F^{3π}$, which relates the electromagnetic form factor $F_{π^0\toγγ}=F^π$ with the form factor $F_{γ\toπ^+π^0π^-}=F^{3π}$ both taken at vanishing momenta of mesons. Our approach is based on a recently proposed covariant diagonalization of $πa_1$-mixing within a standard effective QCD-inspired meson Lagrangian obtained in the framework of the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. We show that the two surface terms appearing in the calculation of the anomalous triangle quark diagrams or AVV- and AAA-type amplitudes are uniquely fixed by this theorem. As a result, both form factors $F^π$ and $F^{3π}$ are not affected by the $πa_1$-mixing, but the concept of vector meson dominance (VMD) fails for $γ\toπ^+π^0π^-$.

Measuring a QED cross section via a witness particle

We consider a QED scattering ($AB\rightarrow AB$), in which $B$ is initially entangled with a third particle ($C$) that does not participate directly in the scattering. The effect of the scattering over $C$'s final state is evaluated and we note coherence (off-diagonal) terms are created, which lead to non null values for $\langle σ_x\rangle$ and $\langle σ_y\rangle$ that are, in principle, measurable in a Stern-Gerlach apparatus. We chose a particular QED scattering ($e^+e^-\rightarrowμ^+μ^-$) and found that $\langle σ_x\rangle$ and $\langle σ_y\rangle$ are proportional to the total cross section ($σ_{\text{total}}$) of the $AB$ scattering, besides being maximal if $BC$'s initial state is taken as a Bell basis. Furthermore, we calculated the initial and final mutual informations $I_{AC}$ and $I_{BC}$, and noticed an increase (decrease) in $I_{AC}$ ($I_{BC}$), which indicates that, after $AB$ interact, the total amount of correlations (quantum $+$ classical) are distributed among the $3$ subsystems.

Gauge covariant approach to the electroweak interactions of mesons in the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model with spin-1 states

An extended Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model with chiral group $U(2)\times U(2)$ and spin-0 and spin-1 four quark interactions is used to develop the gauge covariant approach to the diagonalization of the $π-a_1$ mixing in the presence of electroweak forces. This allows for manifestly gauge covariant description of both the non-anomalous and anomalous parts of the effective Lagrangian. It is shown that in the non-anomalous sector the theory is equivalent to the standard non-covariant approach.

Top condensation model: a step towards the correct prediction of the Higgs mass

A realization of the composite Higgs scenario in the context of the effective model with the $SU(2)_L\times U(1)_R$ symmetric four-Fermi interactions proposed by Miransky, Tanabashi and Yamawaki is studied. The model implements Nambu's mechanism of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking leading to the formation of $\bar tt$ and $\bar bb$ quark condensates. We explore the vacuum structure and spectrum of the model by using the Schwinger proper-time method. As a direct consequence of this mechanism, the Higgs acquires a mass in accord with its experimental value. The present prediction essentially differs from the known overestimated value, $m_\chi= 2m_t$, making more favourable the top condensation scenario presented here. The mass formulas for the members of the second Higgs doublet are also obtained. The Nambu sum rule is discussed. It is shown that the anomalous $U(1)_A$ symmetry breaking modifies this rule at next to leading order in $1/N_c$.

Quark mass effects in the thermodynamical properties of an extended (P)NJL model

We analyze the thermodynamical properties of a system of strongly interacting particles at vanishing quark chemical potential in the framework of a recently developed extension of the Polyakov-Nambu-Jona-Lasinio Model. In addition to eight quark interactions terms, non-canonical terms which explicitly break chiral symmetry up to the same order in a $1/N_c$ expansion ($N_c$ number of colors) are included. A recently proposed Polyakov potential is considered and the results are compared to lattice QCD data resulting in a favorable scenario for the recent model variants.

Hadronic electroweak current and $π- a_1$ mixing

It is found that in presence of electroweak interactions the gauge covariant diagonalization of the axial-vector -- pseudoscalar mixing in the effective meson Lagrangian leads to a deviation from the vector meson and the axial-vector meson dominance of the entire hadronic electroweak current. The essential features of such a modification of the theory are investigated in the framework of the extended Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model with explicit breaking of chiral $U(2) \times U(2)$ symmetry. The Schwinger-DeWitt method is used as a major tool in our study of the real part of the relevant effective action. Some straightforward applications are considered.

Thermodynamical properties of strongly interacting matter in a model with explicit chiral symmetry breaking interactions

We analyse the effects of the light and strange current quark masses on the phase diagram of QCD at finite temperature and vanishing baryonic chemical potential, computing the speed of sound, the trace anomaly of the energy momentum tensor and the fluctuations and correlations of the conserved charges associated to baryonic, electric and strangeness numbers. The framework is a known extension of the three flavor Nambu Jona Lasinio model, which includes the full set of explicit chiral symmetry breaking interactions (ESB) up to the same order in large $N_c$ counting as the 't Hooft flavor mixing terms and eight quark interactions. It is shown that the ESB terms are relevant for the description of a soft region in the system's speed of sound and overall slope behavior of the observables computed. At the same time the role of the 8q interactions gets highlighted. The model extension with the Polyakov loop is considered and the results are compared to lattice QCD data.

Strongly Interacting Matter Phase Diagram in the presence of Magnetic Fields in an Extended Effective Lagrangian Approach with Explicit Chiral Symmetry Breaking Interactions

Extensions of the NJL model which go beyond the original 4-quark interaction, which drives the dynamical mass generation, have proven to be quite successful in describing low energy hadronic phenomenology. The inclusion of 8-quark interaction terms solved a metastability problem of the effective potential introduced by the inclusion of the 6-quark 't Hooft determinant term in the 3-flavor version of the model (needed to eliminate the unwanted U(1) axial symmetry) . This model, that has proven to be quite powerful and feature-rich, has been expanded to include all the spin-0 terms, without and with explicit chiral symmetry breaking, which are of the same order as the 't Hooft flavor determinant in a 1/Nc expansion resulting in an unprecedented success in reproducing the low lying scalar and pseudoscalar meson spectra. This success can be seen as a result of the inclusion of the full chiral symmetry breaking pattern. The two critical endpoints which are obtained in the temperature/chemical potential phase diagram are shifted to lower chemical potential and higher temperature when the effect of magnetic field is taken into account. For the studied magnetic field strengths (in the range $eH=0-0.4~GeV^2$) no significant extra transitions are seen to appear.

Light quark mass differences in the $π^0 - η- η'$ system

A generalized 3 flavor Nambu-Jona--Lasinio Lagrangian including the explicit chiral symmetry breaking interactions which contribute at the same order in the large $1/N_c$ counting as the $U_A(1)$ 't Hooft flavor determinant is considered to obtain the mixing angles in the $π^0-η-η'$ system and related current quark mass ratios in close agreement with phenomenological values. At the same time an accurate ordering and magnitude of the splitting of states in the low lying pseudoscalar nonet is obtained.

Subtleties in the beta function calculation of N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories

We investigate some peculiarities in the calculation of the two-loop beta-function of $N=1$ supersymmetric models which are intimately related to the so-called "Anomaly Puzzle". There is an apparent paradox when the computation is performed in the framework of the covariant derivative background field method. In this formalism, it is obtained a finite two-loop effective action, although a non-null coefficient for the beta-function is achieved by means of the renormalized two-point function in the background field. We show that if the standard background field method is used, this two-point function has a divergent part which allows for the calculation of the beta-function via the renormalization constants, as usual. Therefore, we conjecture that this paradox has its origin in the covariant supergraph formalism itself, possibly being an artifact of the rescaling anomaly.

Strange quark matter in the presence of explicit symmetry breaking interactions

It is shown that a first order transition associated with a jump in the strange quark mass appears in a generalized 3 flavour Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) treatment of quark matter. The generalization of the Lagrangian displays the complete set of spin 0 interactions at leading and subleading orders (LO and NLO) in $\frac{1}{N_c}$counting, including the recently derived NLO explicit chiral symmetry breaking interactions which are of the same order as the 't Hooft flavour determinant. The parameters of the model are tightly constrained by the low energy characteristics in both the pseudoscalar and scalar meson sectors. The transition occurs in a moderate chemical potential region ($μ\simeq 400~\mathrm{MeV}$ for zero temperature) in addition to the usual chiral transition associated with the light quark sector. This feature has at its root the inclusion of the explicit chiral symmetry breaking interactions, which therefore can be seen to act as a catalyst in the production of strange quark matter when compared to the conventional version of the model that takes only into account the 't Hooft interaction in the NLO. It can be traced back to the effect of the interactions which do not violate the Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka rule (OZI), without which the empirical ordering of the scalars ($m_{K^\star}< m_{a_0}\approx m_{f_0}$) is not reproduced.

Nonuniform phases in the 't Hooft extended Nambu--Jona-Lasinio Model

The phase diagram of cold dense quark matter is studied using the 't Hooft extended Nambu--Jona-Lasinio Model applied to the light quark sector with a finite current mass for the strange quark (up and down are considered in the chiral limit). By relaxing the traditional uniformity assumptions and considering a modulated light quark condensate background we investigate the possible existence of non-uniform phases in this region of the phase diagram. The effects of changes in the coupling strengths of the model are studied and it is shown that the inclusion of flavour mixing combined with the finite current mass of the strange quark catalyses the appearance of the non-uniform phases, extending the domain for their existence.
