Modeling Light Propagation and Amplification Efficiency in Highly Multimode, Yb-doped Fiber Amplifiers

Multimode fibers have been proposed for mitigating nonlinear effects in high-power fiber amplifiers, allowing for significant power scaling. Most previous studies on light propagation in continuous-wave fiber amplifiers focus on single mode or few mode fibers. Here we develop a tractable numerical model to simulate light propagation in narrowband, highly multimode fiber amplifiers, which takes into account gain saturation, pump depletion and mode-dependent gain. We consider a frequency domain, field based model, with modal gain being dependent on both intramodal gain and gain-induced mode coupling. We derive coupled equations for the evolution of signal modal amplitudes, pump power and population inversion, and numerically solve these equations using a finite-difference method. For highly multimode excitations, the optical intensity in the fiber is speckled and various modes grow at different rates, due to differential overlap with the gain medium and spatial hole burning. Our analysis is applied to Yb-doped fibers, with a quasi-quantitative analysis of the specific case of Yb, identifying different regimes in which either spontaneous emission (SE) or amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) limit amplifier efficiency, especially for larger core and multimode fibers. Finally, we incorporate ASE and spectrally resolved optical channels into our model and demonstrate the experimentally verifiable phenomenon of ASE suppression with sufficient input signal power. Our model can be combined with existing models for various nonlinear effects, providing a useful tool for quantitatively studying nonlinearity mitigation and power scaling in multimode fiber amplifiers.

First results from ALPPS: a sub-Alfv\'enic streamer in SVS13A

We present the first results from the ALMA Perseus Polarization Survey (ALPPS), focusing on the magnetic field in the SVS13A circumbinary disk. The dataset includes full-Stokes dust continuum observations at $\sim0\farcs3$ and 870 $\mu$m, as well as molecular line emission from C$^{17}$O$(J=3 \rightarrow 2)$ at $\sim0\farcs3$, C$^{18}$O$(J=2 \rightarrow 1)$ at $\sim0\farcs2$, and DCN$(J=3 \rightarrow 2)$ at $\sim0\farcs1$ angular resolution. Our observations resolve both a previously identified dust spiral and an infalling streamer, capturing their spatial and kinematic structures. The streamer is traced from scales $>300$ au down to the circumbinary disk. Using alignment measure (AM) maps and histograms that compare the orientations of the plane-of-sky magnetic field with local intensity and velocity gradients, we find that the AM distribution peaks at a value of 1. This AM peak strongly suggests alignment between the field and the dust total intensity emission, as well as between the field and the gas velocity, which in turn suggests grain alignment by magnetic fields. From our data, we derive a magnetic field strength, B$_{\mathrm{pos}} \sim 1.1 \pm 0.6$\, mG, and a kinetic to magnetic energy ratio of $0.5 \pm 0.4$, suggesting magnetic dominance. We also produced a map of the Alfv\'enic Mach number, finding $\mathcal{M}_{\rm A} < 1$ along the streamer, consistent with sub-Alfv\'enic infalling motions. Therefore, the field is likely facilitating the inflow of material from the envelope onto the disk by constraining movement across the field lines. This represents the first detection of a magnetically sub-Alfv\'enic infalling streamer in a protostellar system.

Local texture of three-stage CVD SiC fibre by precession electron diffraction (PED) and XRD

SiC fibre with the transverse isotropic properties is very important to it reinforced metal matrix composites. In this paper, local texture of the CVD SiC fibre was investigated by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and precession electron diffraction (PED) on transmission electron microscopy(TEM). The result from XRD is in agreement with the result obtained from PED. And the result shown that at the first stage of deposition, the preferred direction of SiC grains is almost random and the distribution of grain size is scattered. At the second and third stages of deposition, there are two kinds of texture in SiC fibre, that is, (110),111. and (110),115.. Furthermore, the grain size at the second and third stages is about 200 nm and it is lower at the third stage than at the second stage because of the lower temperature at the third stage. The [110] preferred direction along axial direction for SiC fibre is beneficial to the axial tensile strength.

Exploring the possible two-proton radioactivity of $^{38,39}$Ti

Two-proton (2$p$) radioactivity represents a rare decay mode that has been experimentally observed only in a selected few nuclei. The exploration of 2$p$ emission is crucial for elucidating the structure, mass, and nucleon-nucleon interactions within exotic proton-rich nuclei. $^{39}$Ti has long been postulated as a potential candidate for 2$p$ emission; however, experimental investigations have yet to confirm its 2$p$ decay. To provide more accurate information for further studies, we utilize the Gamow shell model (GSM) and the Gamow coupled channel (GCC) method to analyze the prospective 2$p$ radioactivity of isotopes $^{38,39}$Ti. Our calculations suggest that $^{39}$Ti is indeed a viable candidate for 2$p$ emission. Notably, the estimated partial 2$p$ decay width for $^{39}$Ti, predicted from the three-body GCC method, suggests that its 2$p$ decay could rival its $\beta$ decay in likelihood, although this is highly dependent on the specific 2$p$ decay energy. Additionally, our analysis indicates a propensity for pairing between the valence protons in $^{39}$Ti. A similar investigative approach reveals that $^{38}$Ti exhibits a higher 2$p$ decay energy and a broader decay width than $^{39}$Ti, positioning it as a more promising candidate for 2$p$ decay.

The protostars in Orion: Characterizing the properties of their magnetized envelopes

We present a study connecting the physical properties of protostellar envelopes to the morphology of the envelope-scale magnetic field. We used the ALMA polarization observations of 61 young prtostars at 0.87 mm on $\sim400-3000$ au scales from the {\em B}-field Orion Protostellar Survey to infer the envelope-scale magnetic field, and used the dust emission to measure the envelope properties on comparable scales. We find that protostars showing standard-hourglass-field morphology tend to have larger masses and lower velocity dispersions in their envelopes, whereas systems with spiral-field morphologies have higher velocity dispersion. Combining with the disk properties taken from the Orion VLA/ALMA Nascent Disk and Multiplicity survey, we connect envelope properties to fragmentation. Our results show that the fragmentation level is positively correlated with the angle dispersion of the magnetic field, suggesting that the envelope fragmentation tends to be suppressed by the magnetic field. We also find that protostars exhibiting standard hourglass magnetic field structure tend to have a smaller disk and smaller angle dispersion of the magnetic field than other field configurations, specially the rotated hourglass, but also the spiral and others, suggesting a more effective magnetic braking in the standard hourglass morphology of magnetic fields. Nevertheless, significant misalignment between the magnetic field and outflow axes tends to reduce magnetic braking, leading to the formation of larger disks.

The STAR Forward Silicon Tracker

The Forward Silicon Tracker (FST) is a pivotal component of the forward upgrade of the Solenoidal Tracker at RHIC (STAR), designed to discern hadron charge signs with a momentum resolution better than 30% for $0.2 < p_T < 2$ GeV/c in the $2.5 < \eta < 4$ pseudorapidity range. Its compact design features three disks along the beam direction, minimized material budget, and scattering effects. The FST uses Hamamatsu's p-in-n silicon strip sensors with a double metal layer that enables efficient signal routing to the readout electronics, enhancing overall detector performance. The flexible hybrid boards, essential for the readout system, are constructed with Kapton and copper layers to optimize signal handling and power distribution. These boards connect silicon strips to analogue pipeline ASIC APV25-S1 chips, which read up to 128 channels each. A cooling system with nonconducting, volatile NOVEC 7200 coolant at 22.2{\deg}C mitigates ASIC-generated heat. The FST enhances forward tracking performance at STAR as an integral part of the forward upgrade.

Ion Coulomb Crystals in Storage Rings for Quantum Information Science

Quantum information science is a growing field that promises to take computing into a new age of higher performance and larger scale computing as well as being capable of solving problems classical computers are incapable of solving. The outstanding issue in practical quantum computing today is scaling up the system while maintaining interconnectivity of the qubits and low error rates in qubit operations to be able to implement error correction and fault-tolerant operations. Trapped ion qubits offer long coherence times that allow error correction. However, error correction algorithms require large numbers of qubits to work properly. We can potentially create many thousands (or more) of qubits with long coherence states in a storage ring. For example, a circular radio-frequency quadrupole, which acts as a large circular ion trap and could enable larger scale quantum computing. Such a Storage Ring Quantum Computer (SRQC) would be a scalable and fault tolerant quantum information system, composed of qubits with very long coherence lifetimes. With computing demands potentially outpacing the supply of high-performance systems, quantum computing could bring innovation and scientific advances to particle physics and other DOE supported programs. Increased support of R$\&$D in large scale ion trap quantum computers would allow the timely exploration of this exciting new scalable quantum computer. The R$\&$D program could start immediately at existing facilities and would include the design and construction of a prototype SRQC. We invite feedback from and collaboration with the particle physics and quantum information science communities.

Collision energy dependence of second-order off-diagonal and diagonal cumulants of net-charge, net-proton and net-kaon multiplicity distributions in Au+Au collisions

We report the first measurements of a complete second-order cumulant matrix of net-charge, net-proton, and net-kaon multiplicity distributions for the first phase of the beam energy scan program at RHIC. This includes the centrality and, for the first time, the pseudorapidity window dependence of both diagonal and off-diagonal cumulants in Au+Au collisions at \sNN~= 7.7-200 GeV. Within the available acceptance of $|η|<0.5$, the cumulants grow linearly with the pseudorapidity window. Relative to the corresponding measurements in peripheral collisions, the ratio of off-diagonal over diagonal cumulants in central collisions indicates an excess correlation between net-charge and net-kaon, as well as between net-charge and net-proton. The strength of such excess correlation increases with the collision energy. The correlation between net-proton and net-kaon multiplicity distributions is observed to be negative at \sNN~= 200 GeV and change to positive at the lowest collision energy. Model calculations based on non-thermal (UrQMD) and thermal (HRG) production of hadrons cannot explain the data. These measurements will help map the QCD phase diagram, constrain hadron resonance gas model calculations, and provide new insights on the energy dependence of baryon-strangeness correlations. An erratum has been added to address the issue of self-correlation in the previously considered efficiency correction for off-diagonal cumulant measurement. Previously considered unidentified (net-)charge correlation results ($σ^{11}_{Q,p}$ and $σ^{11}_{Q,k})$ are now replaced with identified (net-)charge correlation ($σ^{11}_{Q^{PID},p}$ and $σ^{11}_{Q^{PID},k}$)

Strange hadron production in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{\mathrm{NN}}}}$ = 7.7, 11.5, 19.6, 27, and 39 GeV

We present STAR measurements of strange hadron ($\mathrm{K}^{0}_{\mathrm S}$, $Λ$, $\overlineΛ$, $Ξ^-$, $\overlineΞ^+$, $Ω^-$, $\overlineΩ^+$, and $ϕ$) production at mid-rapidity ($|y| < 0.5$) in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{\mathrm{NN}}}}$ = 7.7 - 39 GeV from the Beam Energy Scan Program at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). Transverse momentum spectra, averaged transverse mass, and the overall integrated yields of these strange hadrons are presented versus the centrality and collision energy. Antibaryon-to-baryon ratios ($\overlineΛ$/$Λ$, $\overlineΞ^+$/$Ξ^-$, $\overlineΩ^+$/$Ω^-$) are presented as well, and used to test a thermal statistical model and to extract the temperature normalized strangeness and baryon chemical potentials at hadronic freeze-out ($μ_{B}/T_{\rm ch}$ and $μ_{S}/T_{\rm ch}$) in central collisions. Strange baryon-to-pion ratios are compared to various model predictions in central collisions for all energies. The nuclear modification factors ($R_{\textrm{CP}}$) and antibaryon-to-meson ratios as a function of transverse momentum are presented for all collision energies. The $\mathrm{K}^{0}_{\mathrm S}$ $R_{\textrm{CP}}$ shows no suppression for $p_{\rm T}$ up to 3.5 $\mathrm{GeV} / c$ at energies of 7.7 and 11.5 GeV. The $\overlineΛ$/$\mathrm{K}^{0}_{\mathrm S}$ ratio also shows baryon-to-meson enhancement at intermediate $p_{\rm T}$ ($\approx$2.5 $\mathrm{GeV} / c$) in central collisions at energies above 19.6 GeV. Both observations suggest that there is likely a change of the underlying strange quark dynamics at collision energies below 19.6 GeV.

Resonantly Interacting Fermi-Fermi Mixture of $^{161}$Dy and $^{40}$K

We report on the realization of a Fermi-Fermi mixture of ultracold atoms that combines mass imbalance, tunability, and collisional stability. In an optically trapped sample of $^{161}$Dy and $^{40}$K, we identify a broad Feshbach resonance centered at a magnetic field of $217\,$G. Hydrodynamic expansion profiles in the resonant interaction regime reveal a bimodal behavior resulting from mass imbalance. Lifetime studies on resonance show a suppression of inelastic few-body processes by orders of magnitude, which we interpret as a consequence of the fermionic nature of our system. The resonant mixture opens up intriguing perspectives for studies on novel states of strongly correlated fermions with mass imbalance.

Measurements of the transverse-momentum-dependent cross sections of $J/ψ$ production at mid-rapidity in proton+proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 510 and 500 GeV with the STAR detector

We present measurements of the differential cross sections of inclusive $J/ψ$ meson production as a function of transverse momentum ($p_{T}^{J/ψ}$) using the $μ^{+}μ^{-}$ and $e^{+}e^{-}$ decay channels in proton+proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 510 and 500 GeV, respectively, recorded by the STAR detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The measurement from the $μ^{+}μ^{-}$ channel is for 0 $< p_{T}^{J/ψ} <$ 9 GeV/$c$ and rapidity range $|y^{J/ψ}| < $ 0.4, and that from the $e^{+}e^{-}$ channel is for 4 $< p_{T}^{J/ψ} <$ 20 GeV/$c$ and $|y^{J/ψ}| < $ 1.0. The $ψ(2S)$ to $J/ψ$ ratio is also measured for 4 $< p_{T}^{\rm meson} <$ 12 GeV/$c$ through the $e^{+}e^{-}$ decay channel. Model calculations, which incorporate different approaches toward the $J/ψ$ production mechanism, are compared with experimental results and show reasonable agreement within uncertainties.

Bulk Properties of the System Formed in Au+Au Collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}$ = 14.5 GeV

We report systematic measurements of bulk properties of the system created in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}$ = 14.5 GeV recorded by the STAR detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC).The transverse momentum spectra of $π^{\pm}$, $K^{\pm}$ and $p(\bar{p})$ are studied at mid-rapidity ($|y| < 0.1$) for nine centrality intervals. The centrality, transverse momentum ($p_T$),and pseudorapidity ($η$) dependence of inclusive charged particle elliptic flow ($v_2$), and rapidity-odd charged particles directed flow ($v_{1}$) results near mid-rapidity are also presented. These measurements are compared with the published results from Au+Au collisions at other energies, and from Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}$ = 2.76 TeV. The results at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}$ = 14.5 GeV show similar behavior as established at other energies and fit well in the energy dependence trend. These results are important as the 14.5 GeV energy fills the gap in $μ_B$, which is of the order of 100 MeV,between $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}$ =11.5 and 19.6 GeV. Comparisons of the data with UrQMD and AMPT models show poor agreement in general.

Longitudinal double-spin asymmetry for inclusive jet and dijet production in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 510$ GeV

We report the first measurement of the inclusive jet and the dijet longitudinal double-spin asymmetries, $A_{LL}$, at midrapidity in polarized $pp$ collisions at a center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} = 510$ GeV. The inclusive jet $A_{LL}$ measurement is sensitive to the gluon helicity distribution down to a gluon momentum fraction of $x\approx 0.015$, while the dijet measurements, separated into four jet-pair topologies, provide constraints on the $x$ dependence of the gluon polarization. Both results are consistent with previous measurements made at $\sqrt{s}= 200$ GeV in the overlapping kinematic region, $x > 0.05$, and show good agreement with predictions from recent next-to-leading order global analyses.

Measurement of inclusive $J/ψ$ suppression in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV through the dimuon channel at STAR

$J/ψ$ suppression has long been considered a sensitive signature of the formation of the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. In this letter, we present the first measurement of inclusive $J/ψ$ production at mid-rapidity through the dimuon decay channel in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV with the STAR experiment. These measurements became possible after the installation of the Muon Telescope Detector was completed in 2014. The $J/ψ$ yields are measured in a wide transverse momentum ($p_{\rm{T}}$) range of 0.15 GeV/$c$ to 12 GeV/$c$ from central to peripheral collisions. They extend the kinematic reach of previous measurements at RHIC with improved precision. In the 0-10% most central collisions, the $J/ψ$ yield is suppressed by a factor of approximately 3 for $p_{\rm{T}}>5$ GeV/$c$ relative to that in p+p collisions scaled by the number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions. The $J/ψ$ nuclear modification factor displays little dependence on $p_{\rm{T}}$ in all centrality bins. Model calculations can qualitatively describe the data, providing further evidence for the color-screening effect experienced by $J/ψ$ mesons in the QGP.

Polarization of $Λ$ ($\barΛ$) hyperons along the beam direction in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$ = 200 GeV

The $Λ$ ($\barΛ$) hyperon polarization along the beam direction has been measured for the first time in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$ = 200 GeV. The polarization dependence on the hyperons' emission angle relative to the second-order event plane exhibits a sine modulation, indicating a quadrupole pattern of the vorticity component along the beam direction. The polarization is found to increase in more peripheral collisions, and shows no strong transverse momentum ($p_T$) dependence at $p_T>1$ GeV/$c$. The magnitude of the signal is about five times smaller than those predicted by hydrodynamic and multiphase transport models; the observed phase of the emission angle dependence is also opposite to these model predictions. In contrast, blast-wave model calculations reproduce the modulation phase measured in the data and capture the centrality and transverse momentum dependence of the signal once the model is required to reproduce the azimuthal dependence of the Gaussian source radii measured via the Hanbury-Brown and Twiss intensity interferometry technique.

First observation of the directed flow of $D^{0}$ and $\overline{D^0}$ in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 200~GeV

We report the first measurement of rapidity-odd directed flow ($v_{1}$) for $D^{0}$ and $\overline{D^{0}}$ mesons at mid-rapidity ($|y| < 0.8$) in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 200\,GeV using the STAR detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. In 10--80\% Au+Au collisions, the slope of the $v_{1}$ rapidity dependence ($dv_{1}/dy$), averaged over $D^{0}$ and $\overline{D^{0}}$ mesons, is -0.080 $\pm$ 0.017 (stat.) $\pm$ 0.016 (syst.) for transverse momentum $p_{\rm T}$ above 1.5~GeV/$c$. The absolute value of $D^0$-meson $dv_1/dy$ is about 25 times larger than that for charged kaons, with 3.4$σ$ significance. These data give a unique insight into the initial tilt of the produced matter, and offer constraints on the geometric and transport parameters of the hot QCD medium created in relativistic heavy-ion collisions.

Measurement of the mass difference and the binding energy of the hypertriton and antihypertriton

According to the CPT theorem, which states that the combined operation of charge conjugation, parity transformation and time reversal must be conserved, particles and their antiparticles should have the same mass and lifetime but opposite charge and magnetic moment. Here, we test CPT symmetry in a nucleus containing a strange quark, more specifically in the hypertriton. This hypernucleus is the lightest one yet discovered and consists of a proton, a neutron, and a $\Lambda$ hyperon. With data recorded by the STAR detector{\cite{TPC,HFT,TOF}} at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, we measure the $\Lambda$ hyperon binding energy $B_{\Lambda}$ for the hypertriton, and find that it differs from the widely used value{\cite{B_1973}} and from predictions{\cite{2019_weak, 1995_weak, 2002_weak, 2014_weak}}, where the hypertriton is treated as a weakly bound system. Our results place stringent constraints on the hyperon-nucleon interaction{\cite{Hammer2002, STAR-antiH3L}}, and have implications for understanding neutron star interiors, where strange matter may be present{\cite{Chatterjee2016}}. A precise comparison of the masses of the hypertriton and the antihypertriton allows us to test CPT symmetry in a nucleus with strangeness for the first time, and we observe no deviation from the expected exact symmetry.

Beam energy dependence of (anti-)deuteron production in Au+Au collisions at RHIC

We report the energy dependence of mid-rapidity (anti-)deuteron production in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_\text{NN}} =\ $7.7, 11.5, 14.5, 19.6, 27, 39, 62.4, and 200 GeV, measured by the STAR experiment at RHIC. The yield of deuterons is found to be well described by the thermal model. The collision energy, centrality, and transverse momentum dependence of the coalescence parameter $B_2$ are discussed. We find that the values of $B_2$ for anti-deuterons are systematically lower than those for deuterons, indicating that the correlation volume of anti-baryons is larger than that of baryons at $\sqrt{s_\text{NN}}$ from 19.6 to 39 GeV. In addition, values of $B_2$ are found to vary with collision energy and show a broad minimum around $\sqrt{s_\text{NN}}=\ $20 to 40 GeV, which might imply a change of the equation of state of the medium in these collisions.
