Nano-wires with surface disorder: Giant localization lengths and quantum-to-classical crossover

We investigate electronic quantum transport through nano-wires with one-sided surface roughness. A magnetic field perpendicular to the scattering region is shown to lead to exponentially diverging localization lengths in the quantum-to-classical crossover regime. This effect can be quantitatively accounted for by tunneling between the regular and the chaotic components of the underlying mixed classical phase space.

Current-voltage characteristics and the zero-resistance state in a 2DEG

We study the current-voltage characteristics (CVC) of two-dimensional electron gases (2DEG) with microwave induced negative conductance in a magnetic field. We show that due to the Hall effect, strictly speaking there is no distinction between N- and S-shaped CVCs. Instead the observed CVC depends on the experimental setup with, e.g., an N-shaped CVC in a Corbino disc geometry corresponding to an S-shaped CVC in a Hall bar geometry in a strong magnetic field. We argue that instabilities of homogeneous states in regions of negative differential conductivity lead to the observation of zero resistance in Hall bars and zero conductance in Corbino discs and we discuss the structure of current and electric field domains.

Relation between the Correlation Dimensions of Multifractal Wavefunctions and Spectral Measures in Integer Quantum Hall Systems

We study the time evolution of wavepackets of non-interacting electrons in a two-dimensional disordered system in strong magnetic field. For wavepackets built from states near the metal-insulator transition in the center of the lowest Landau band we find that the return probability to the origin $p(t)$ decays algebraically, $p(t) \sim t^{-D_2/2}$, with a non-conventional exponent $D_2/2$. $D_2$ is the generalized dimension describing the scaling of the second moment of the wavefunction. We show that the corresponding spectral measure is multifractal and that the exponent $D_2/2$ equals the generalized dimension $\widetilde{D}_2$ of the spectral measure.
