Lattice QCD at nonzero temperature and density

We discuss some selected recent developments in the field of lattice QCD at nonzero temperature and density, describing in particular the transition from the hadronic gas to the quark-gluon plasma, as seen in simulations using Wilson fermions.

Properties of the QCD thermal transition with $N_f=2+1$ flavours of Wilson quark

We study properties of the thermal transition in QCD, using anisotropic, fixed-scale lattice simulations with $N_f = 2+1$ flavours of Wilson fermion. Observables are compared for two values of the pion mass, focusing on chiral properties. Results are presented for the Polyakov loop, various susceptibilities, the chiral condensate and its susceptibility, and the onset of parity doubling in the light and strange baryonic sector.

Mesonic correlators at non-zero baryon chemical potential

In order to study the fate of mesons in thermal QCD at finite baryon chemical potential, we consider light mesonic correlation functions using the Taylor expansion to ${\cal O}((μ/T)^2)$, in both the hadronic and quark-gluon plasma phases. We use the FASTSUM anisotropic fixed-scale lattices with $N_f = 2+1$ flavours of Wilson fermion. We find that mesonic correlators are sensitive to finite-density corrections and that the second-order terms indicate the chiral crossover in the vector and axial-vector channels.

A lattice calculation of the hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to $(g-2)_μ$

We present results of calculations of the hadronic vacuum polarisation contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment. Specifically, we focus on controlling the infrared regime of the vacuum polarisation function. Our results are corrected for finite-size effects by combining the Gounaris-Sakurai parameterisation of the timelike pion form factor with the Lüscher formalism. The impact of quark-disconnected diagrams and the precision of the scale determination is discussed and included in our final result in two-flavour QCD, which carries an overall uncertainty of 6%. We present preliminary results computed on ensembles with $N_f=2+1$ dynamical flavours and discuss how the long-distance contribution can be accurately constrained by a dedicated spectrum calculation in the iso-vector channel.

The hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the muon $g-2$ from lattice QCD

We present a calculation of the hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment, $a_μ^{\mathrm hvp}$, in lattice QCD employing dynamical up and down quarks. We focus on controlling the infrared regime of the vacuum polarization function. To this end we employ several complementary approaches, including Padé fits, time moments and the time-momentum representation. We correct our results for finite-volume effects by combining the Gounaris-Sakurai parameterization of the timelike pion form factor with the Lüscher formalism. On a subset of our ensembles we have derived an upper bound on the magnitude of quark-disconnected diagrams and found that they decrease the estimate for $a_μ^{\mathrm hvp}$ by at most 2%. Our final result is $a_μ^{\mathrm hvp}=(654\pm32\,{}^{+21}_{-23})\cdot 10^{-10}$, where the first error is statistical, and the second denotes the combined systematic uncertainty. Based on our findings we discuss the prospects for determining $a_μ^{\mathrm hvp}$ with sub-percent precision.

Anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, a hybrid approach

A new QCD sum rule determination of the leading order hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, $a_μ^{\rm hvp}$, is proposed. This approach combines data on $e^{+}e^{-}$ annihilation into hadrons, perturbative QCD and lattice QCD results for the first derivative of the electromagnetic current correlator at zero momentum transfer, $Π_{\rm EM}^\prime(0)$. The idea is based on the observation that, in the relevant kinematic domain, the integration kernel $K(s)$, entering the formula relating $a_μ^{\rm hvp}$ to $e^{+}e^{-}$ annihilation data, behaves like $1/s$ times a very smooth function of $s$, the squared energy. We find an expression for $a_μ$ in terms of $Π_{\rm EM}^\prime(0)$, which can be calculated in lattice QCD. Using recent lattice results we find a good approximation for $a_μ^{\rm hvp}$, but the precision is not yet sufficient to resolve the discrepancy between the $R(s)$ data-based results and the experimentally measured value.

Physics at a 100 TeV pp collider: Standard Model processes

This report summarises the properties of Standard Model processes at the 100 TeV pp collider. We document the production rates and typical distributions for a number of benchmark Standard Model processes, and discuss new dynamical phenomena arising at the highest energies available at this collider. We discuss the intrinsic physics interest in the measurement of these Standard Model processes, as well as their role as backgrounds for New Physics searches.

Electroweak corrections to $pp \to μ^+μ^-e^+e^- + X$ at the LHC -- a Higgs background study

The first complete calculation of the next-to-leading-order electroweak corrections to four-lepton production at the LHC is presented, where all off-shell effects of intermediate Z bosons and photons are taken into account. Focusing on the mixed final state $μ^+μ^-e^+e^-$, we study differential cross sections that are particularly interesting for Higgs-boson analyses. The electroweak corrections are divided into photonic and purely weak corrections. The former exhibit patterns familiar from similar W/Z-boson production processes with very large radiative tails near resonances and kinematical shoulders. The weak corrections are of the generic size of 5% and show interesting variations, in particular a sign change between the regions of resonant Z-pair production and the Higgs signal.

Nucleon electromagnetic form factors in two-flavour QCD

We present results for the nucleon electromagnetic form factors, including the momentum transfer dependence and derived quantities (charge radii and magnetic moment). The analysis is performed using O(a) improved Wilson fermions in Nf=2 QCD measured on the CLS ensembles. Particular focus is placed on a systematic evaluation of the influence of excited states in three-point correlation functions, which lead to a biased evaluation, if not accounted for correctly. We argue that the use of summed operator insertions and fit ansätze including excited states allow us to suppress and control this effect. We employ a novel method to perform joint chiral and continuum extrapolations, by fitting the form factors directly to the expressions of covariant baryonic chiral effective field theory. The final results for the charge radii and magnetic moment from our lattice calculations include, for the first time, a full error budget. We find that our estimates are compatible with experimental results within their overall uncertainties.

Nucleon axial form factors from two-flavour Lattice QCD

We present preliminary results on the axial form factor $G_A(Q^2)$ and the induced pseudoscalar form factor $G_P(Q^2)$ of the nucleon. A systematic analysis of the excited-state contributions to form factors is performed on the CLS ensemble `N6' with $m_π= 340 \ \text{MeV}$ and lattice spacing $a \sim 0.05 \ \text{fm}$. The relevant three-point functions were computed with source-sink separations ranging from $t_s \sim 0.6 \ \text{fm}$ to $t_s \sim \ 1.4 \ \text{fm}$. We observe that the form factors suffer from non-trivial excited-state contributions at the source-sink separations available to us. It is noted that naive plateau fits underestimate the excited-state contributions and that the method of summed operator insertions correctly accounts for these effects.

Suppression of excited-state effects in lattice determination of nucleon electromagnetic form factors

We study the ability of a variety of fitting techniques to extract the ground state matrix elements of the vector current from ratios of nucleon three- and two-point functions that contain contaminations from excited states. Extending our high-statistics study of nucleon form factors, we are able to demonstrate that the treatment of excited-state contributions in conjunction with approaching the physical pion mass has a significant impact on the $Q^2$-dependence of the form factors.

Les Houches 2013: Physics at TeV Colliders: Standard Model Working Group Report

This Report summarizes the proceedings of the 2013 Les Houches workshop on Physics at TeV Colliders. Session 1 dealt primarily with (1) the techniques for calculating standard model multi-leg NLO and NNLO QCD and NLO EW cross sections and (2) the comparison of those cross sections with LHC data from Run 1, and projections for future measurements in Run 2.

A high-statistics study of the nucleon EM form factors, axial charge and quark momentum fraction

We present updated results for the nucleon axial charge and electromagnetic (EM) form factors, which include a significant increase in statistics for all ensembles (up to 4000 measurements), as well as the addition of ensembles with pion masses down to $m_π\sim195$ MeV. We also present results for the average quark momentum fraction. The new data allows us to perform a thorough study of the systematic effects encountered in the lattice extraction. We concentrate on systematic effects due to excited-state contaminations for each of the quantities, which we check using several different time separations between the operators at the source and sink through a comparison of plateau fits and the summed operator insertion method (which provides a mechanism to suppress the excited-state contamination). We confirm our earlier finding that a reliable extraction of the axial charge must be based on a method which eliminates excited-state contaminations. Similar conclusions apply to our EM form factor calculations . The measurements are calculated using the CLS ensembles with non-perturbatively O(a) improved Wilson fermions in $N_f=2$ QCD.

The nucleon axial charge from lattice QCD with controlled errors

We report on our calculation of the nucleon axial charge gA in QCD with two flavours of dynamical quarks. A detailed investigation of systematic errors is performed, with a particular focus on contributions from excited states to three-point correlation functions. The use of summed operator insertions allows for a much better control over such contamination. After performing a chiral extrapolation to the physical pion mass, we find gA=1.223 +/- 0.063 (stat) +0.035 -0.060 (syst), in good agreement with the experimental value.

Wilson fermions at fine lattice spacings: scale setting, pion form factors and (g-2)_mu

We present an update on our on-going project to compute hadronic observables for Nf=2 flavours of O(a) improved Wilson fermions at small lattice spacings. The procedure to determine the lattice scale via the mass of the Omega baryon is described. Furthermore we present preliminary results for the pion form factor computed using twisted boundary conditions, and report on the implementation of a novel approach to determine the contribution of the hadronic vacuum polarisation to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon.

Characterization of the electronic properties of YB$_4$ and YB$_6$ using $^{11}$B NMR and first-principles calculations

Two compounds, tetragonal YB$_4$ and cubic YB$_6$, have been investigated by electric-field gradient (EFG) and Knight shift measurements at the boron sites using the $^{11}$B nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technique and by performing first-principles calculations. In YB$_6$ $^{11}$B ($I=3/2$) NMR spectra reveal patterns typical for an axially symmetric field gradient with a quadrupole coupling frequency of $ν_Q=600\pm15$ kHz. In the second boride (YB$_4$) three different EFGs were observed corresponding to the three inequivalent crystallographic sites for the boron atoms ($4h$, $4e$, and $8j$). They correspond to: $ν_Q(4h)=700\pm30$ kHz with an asymmetry parameter $η=0.02\pm0.02$, $ν_Q(4e)=515\pm30$ kHz, $η=0.00+0.02/-0.00$, and $ν_Q(8j)=515\pm40$ kHz, $η=0.46\pm0.08$. The Knight shifts measured by Magic-Angle Spinning (MAS) NMR at room temperature are very small being $0.6\pm8$ ppm and $-1\pm8$ ppm for YB$_4$ and YB$_6$, respectively. For the theoretical calculations structure optimizations were performed as a first step. For the obtained structural parameters the EFGs were computed within the local-density approximation. Very satisfactory agreement between experimental and theoretical results is obtained both for the structural parameters and the B EFGs thus confirming the underlying structural models. In addition to the EFGs, band structures, densities of states, and valence-electron densities are presented and the bonding situation in the two yttrium borides is discussed. The band-structure results are compatible with the very low values for the Knight shifts mentioned above.

Hard exclusive photoproduction of $Φ$ and $J/Ψ$ mesons

We present predictions for differential cross sections for the reaction $γp \to Φp$ and give an outlook to which extent our calculations may be generalized to the photoproduction of $J/Ψ$ mesons. Our results are obtained within perturbative QCD treating the proton as a quark-diquark system.
