A coordinate-independent characterization of a black hole shadow

A large international effort is under way to assess the presence of a shadow in the radio emission from the compact source at the centre of our Galaxy, Sagittarius A$^*$ (Sgr A$^*$). If detected, this shadow would provide the first direct evidence of the existence of black holes and that Sgr A$^*$ is a supermassive black hole. In addition, the shape of the shadow could be used to learn about extreme gravity near the event horizon and to determine which theory of gravity better describes the observations. The mathematical description of the shadow has so far used a number of simplifying assumptions that are unlikely to be met by the real observational data. We here provide a general formalism to describe the shadow as an arbitrary polar curve expressed in terms of a Legendre expansion. Our formalism does not presume any knowledge of the properties of the shadow, e.g. the location of its centre, and offers a number of routes to characterize the distortions of the curve with respect to reference circles. These distortions can be implemented in a coordinate independent manner by different teams analysing the same data. We show that the new formalism provides an accurate and robust description of noisy observational data, with smaller error variances when compared to previous approaches for the measurement of the distortion.

Spin Down of Rotating Compact Magnetized Strange Stars in General Relativity

We find that in general relativity slow down of the pulsar rotation due to the magnetodipolar radiation is more faster for the strange star with comparison to that for the neutron star of the same mass. Comparison with astrophysical observations on pulsars spindown data may provide an evidence for the strange star existence and, thus, serve as a test for distinguishing it from the neutron star.

Penrose Process in Kerr-Taub-NUT Spacetime

Penrose process on rotational energy extraction of the black hole in the Kerr-Taub-NUT spacetime is studied. It has been shown that for the radial motion of particles NUT parameter slightly shifts the shape of the effective potential down. The dependence of the extracted energy from compact object on NUT parameter has been found.

Plasma Magnetosphere of Rotating Magnetized Neutron Star in the Braneworld

Plasma magnetosphere surrounding rotating magnetized neutron star in the braneworld has been studied. For the simplicity of calculations Goldreich-Julian charge density is analyzed for the aligned neutron star with zero inclination between magnetic field and rotation axis. From the system of Maxwell equations in spacetime of slowly rotating star in braneworld, second-order differential equation for electrostatic potential is derived. Analytical solution of this equation indicates the general relativistic modification of an accelerating electric field and charge density along the open field lines by brane tension. The implication of this effect to the magnetospheric energy loss problem is underlined. It was found that for initially zero potential and field on the surface of a neutron star, the amplitude of the plasma mode created by Goldreich-Julian charge density will increase in the presence of the negative brane charge. Finally we derive the equations of motion of test particles in magnetosphere of slowly rotating star in the braneworld. Then we analyze particle motion in the polar cap and show that brane tension can significantly change conditions for particle acceleration in the polar cap region of the neutron star.

General Relativistic Magnetospheres of Slowly Rotating and Oscillating Magnetized Neutron Stars

We study the magnetosphere of a slowly rotating magnetized neutron star subject to toroidal oscillations in the relativistic regime. Under the assumption of a zero inclination angle between the magnetic moment and the angular momentum of the star, we analyze the Goldreich-Julian charge density and derive a second-order differential equation for the electrostatic potential. The analytical solution of this equation in the polar cap region of the magnetosphere shows the modification induced by stellar toroidal oscillations on the accelerating electric field and on the charge density. We also find that, after decomposing the oscillation velocity in terms of spherical harmonics, the first few modes with $m=0,1$ are responsible for energy losses that are almost linearly dependent on the amplitude of the oscillation and that, for the mode $(l,m)=(2,1)$, can be a factor $\sim8$ larger than the rotational energy losses, even for a velocity oscillation amplitude at the star surface as small as $η=0.05 \ Ω\ R$. The results obtained in this paper clarify the extent to which stellar oscillations are reflected in the time variation of the physical properties at the surface of the rotating neutron star, mainly by showing the existence of a relation between $P\dot{P}$ and the oscillation amplitude. Finally, we propose a qualitative model for the explanation of the phenomenology of intermittent pulsars in terms of stellar oscillations that are periodically excited by star glitches.

Electromagnetic Fields and Charged Particle Motion Around Magnetized Wormholes

We perform a study to describe motion of charged particles under the influence of electromagnetic and gravitational fields of a slowly rotating wormhole with nonvanishing magnetic moment. We present analytic expression for potentials of electromagnetic field for an axially symmetric slowly rotating magnetized wormholes. While addressing important issues regarding the subject, we compare our results of motion around black holes and wormholes in terms of the ratio of radii of event horizons of a black hole and of the throat of a wormhole. It is shown that both radial and circular motions of test bodies in the vicinity of a magnetized wormhole could give rise to a peculiar observational astrophysical phenomenon.

Electromagnetic Fields of Slowly Rotating Magnetized Gravastars

We study the dipolar magnetic field configuration and present solutions of Maxwell equations in the internal background spacetime of a a slowly rotating gravastar. The shell of gravastar where magnetic field penetrated is modeled as sphere consisting of perfect highly magnetized fluid with infinite conductivity. Dipolar magnetic field of the gravastar is produced by a circular current loop symmetrically placed at radius $a$ at the equatorial plane.

Plasma Magnetosphere Formation Around Oscillating Magnetized Neutron Stars

The notion of death line of rotating pulsars is applied to model of oscillating neutron stars. It is shown that the magnetosphere of typical non-rotating oscillating stars may not contain secondary plasma to support the generation of radio emission in the region of open field lines of plasma magnetosphere.

General Relativistic Effect of Gravitomagnetic Charge on Pulsar Magnetosphere and Particle Acceleration in a Polar Cap

We study magnetospheric structure surrounding rotating magnetized neutron star with nonvanishing NUT (Newman-Tamburino-Unti) parameter. For the simplicity of calculations Goldreich-Julian charge density is analyzed for the aligned neutron star with zero inclination between magnetic field, gravitomagnetic field and rotation axis. From the system of Maxwell equations in spacetime of slowly rotating NUT star, second-order differential equation for electrostatic potential is derived. Analytical solution of this equation indicates the general relativistic modification of an accelerating electric field and charge density along the open field lines by the gravitomagnetic charge. The implication of this effect to the magnetospheric energy loss problem is underlined. In the second part of the paper we derive the equations of motion of test particles in magnetosphere of slowly rotating NUT star. Then we analyze particle motion in the polar cap and show that NUT parameter can significantly change conditions for particle acceleration.

Quantum Interference Effects in Slowly Rotating NUT Space-time

General relativistic quantum interference effects in the slowly rotating NUT space-time as the Sagnac effect and the phase shift effect of interfering particle in neutron interferometer are considered. It was found that in the case of the Sagnac effect the influence of NUT parameter is becoming important due to the fact that the angular velocity of the locally non rotating observer must be larger than one in the Kerr space-time. In the case of neutron interferometry it is found that due to the presence of NUT-parameter an additional term in the phase shift of interfering particle emerges. This term can be, in principle, detected by sensitive interferometer and derived results can be further used in experiments to detect the gravitomagnetic charge. Finally, as an example, we apply the obtained results to the calculation of the UCN (ultra-cold neutrons) energy level modification in the slowly rotating NUT space-time.

Particle Motion and Electromagnetic Fields of Rotating Compact Gravitating Objects with Gravitomagnetic Charge

The exact solution for the electromagnetic field occuring when the Kerr-Taub-NUT compact object is immersed (i) in an originally uniform magnetic field aligned along the axis of axial symmetry (ii) in dipolar magnetic field generated by current loop has been investigated. Effective potential of motion of charged test particle around Kerr-Taub-NUT gravitational source immersed in magnetic field with different values of external magnetic field and NUT parameter has been also investigated. In both cases presence of NUT parameter and magnetic field shifts stable circular orbits in the direction of the central gravitating object. Finally we find analytical solutions of Maxwell equations in the external background spacetime of a slowly rotating magnetized NUT star. The star is considered isolated and in vacuum, with monopolar configuration model for the stellar magnetic field.

Plasma Modes Along the Open Field Lines of a Neutron Star

We consider electrostatic plasma modes along the open field lines of a rotating neutron star. Goldreich-Julian charge density in general relativity is analyzed for the neutron star with zero inclination. It is found that the charge density is maximum at the polar cap and it remains almost same in certain extended region of the pole. For a steady state Goldreich-Julian charge density we found the usual plasma oscillation along the field lines; plasma frequency resembles to the gravitational redshift close to the Schwarzschild radius. We study the nonlinear plasma mode along the field lines. From the system of equations under general relativity, a second order differential equation is derived. The equation contains a term which describes the growing plasma modes near Schwarzschild radius in a black hole environment. The term vanishes with the distance far away from the gravitating object. For initially zero potential and field on the surface of a neutron star, Goldreich-Julian charge density is found to create the plasma mode, which is enhanced and propagates almost without damping along the open field lines. We briefly outline our plan to extend the work for studying soliton propagation along the open field lines of strongly gravitating objects.

General Relativistic Thermoelectric Effects in Superconductors

We discuss the general-relativistic contributions to occur in the electromagnetic properties of a superconductor with a heat flow. The appearance of general-relativistic contribution to the magnetic flux through a superconducting thermoelectric bimetallic circuit is shown. A response of the Josephson junctions to a heat flow is investigated in the general-relativistic framework. Some gravitothermoelectric effects which are observable in the superconducting state in the Earth's gravitational field are considered.

Ohm's Law in General Relativity and Coriolis Force Effects in Rotating Conductors

It has been shown that a magnetic field proportional to angular velocity of rotation $ω$ arises around a rotating conductor with the radial gradient of temperature $\nabla_r T$. However, the theoretical value of the proportionality coefficient $10^{-17} {\rm cm}^{5/2}\cdot {\rm g}^{1/2}\cdot {\rm deg}^{-1}$ does not coincide with the experimental one $10^{-8} {\rm cm}^{5/2}\cdot {\rm g}^{1/2}\cdot {\rm deg}^{-1}$ [1]. At least two additional mechanisms act to produce an observable magnetic field in the experiment [1]. First, the fact that the rotation of the conductor is slowed down and second, the nonstationarity of the temperature gradient during the measurements contribute to the vertical magnetic field. The value of the magnetic flux arising from the azimuthal current induced by the ``Coriolis force'' effect on the thermoelectric radial current, is in good agreement with the experimental data [1].

General relativistic galvano-gravitomagnetic effect in current carrying conductors

The analogy between general relativity and electromagnetism suggests that there is a galvano-gravitomagnetic effect, which is the gravitational analog of the Hall effect. This new effect takes place when a current carrying conductor is placed in a gravitomagnetic field and the conduction electrons moving inside the conductor are deflected transversally with respect to the current flow. In connection with this galvano-gravitomagnetic effect, we explore the possibility of using current carrying conductors for detecting the gravitomagnetic field of the Earth.

Rotational Analog of the Hall Effect: Coriolis Contribution to Electric Current

A galvanogyroscopic effect which is the rotational analog of the gravitomagnetic Hall effect has been proposed. As a consequence of Ohm's law in the rotating frame, the effect of the Coriolis force on the conduction current is predicted to give rise to an azimuthal potential difference $V_{gg}$ about $10^{-3}V$ in a spinning rotor carrying radial electric current $i_r$. The potential difference developed by the galvanogyroscopic effect is proportional both to angular velocity ${\mathbf Ω}$ and to the electric current.

Electrical Conductivity in General Relativity

The general relativistic kinetic theory including the effect of a stationary gravitational field is applied to the electromagnetic transport processes in conductors. Then it is applied to derive the general relativistic Ohm's law where the gravitomagnetic terms are incorporated. The total electric charge quantity and charge distribution inside conductors carrying conduction current in some relativistic cases are considered. The general relativistic Ohm's law is applied to predict new gravitomagnetic and gyroscopic effects which can, in principle, be used to detect the Lense-Thirring and rotational fields.

Electromagnetic Fields of Charged and Magnetized Cylindrical Conductors in NUT Space

We present analytic solutions of Maxwell equations for infinitely long cylindrical conductors with nonvanishing electric charge and currents in the external background spacetime of a line gravitomagnetic monopole. It has been shown that vertical magnetic field arising around cylindrical conducting shell carrying azimuthal current will be modified by the gravitational field of NUT source. We obtain that the purely general relativistic magnetic field which has no any Newtonian analog will be produced around charged gravitomagnetic monopole.
