Quasi-elastic scattering for the nuclear ground state structure: An intriguing case of $^{30}$Si

Quasi-elastic (QEL) scattering measurements have been performed using the $^{28, 30}$Si projectiles off the $^{90}$Zr target at energies around the Coulomb barrier. Coupled-channels (CC) calculations were carried out in a large parameter space of quadrupole and hexadecapole deformations for the N=Z, $^{28}$Si and N=Z+2, $^{30}$Si nuclei. $^{28}$Si at the N=Z line is observed to be uniquely oblate shaped in its ground state. In contrast, for $^{30}$Si with just two additional neutrons -- oblate, prolate, and spherical CC descriptions are equally compatible with the measurements. To further investigate the nuclear structure evolution with varying neutron number, shell-model calculations were performed. These calculations reveal a sudden change in the nuclear structure aspects at $^{30}$Si in going from $^{28}$Si to $^{30}$Si. Combined reaction and structure analyses consistently indicate that $^{30}$Si does not possess a well-defined intrinsic shape, and it is a potential candidate for ``shape fluctuations" in its ground state.

Observation of near-scission "polar" and "equatorial" proton emission in heavy-ion induced fission

Proton and $α$-particle energy spectra were measured in coincidence with fission fragments at different relative angles in $^{16}$O (96 MeV) + $^{232}$Th reaction. The multiplicity spectra were analyzed within the framework of a Moving Source Disentangling Analysis (MSDA) to determine contributions from different emission stages. The MSDA conclusively shows ``Near Scission Emission (NSE)" as an essential component in the multiplicity spectra. In contrast to NSE $α$ particles which emit mainly perpendicular (``equatorial emission"), the NSE protons are observed to be emitted perpendicular as well as parallel (``polar emission") to the fission axis with similar intensities ($\sim$20\% for each). Thus, around 40\% of total pre-scission protons are emitted near the scission stage, whereas the same fraction for $α$ particles is only around 10\%. The inevitable presence of ``polar" and ``equatorial" NSE protons in a heavy-ion induced fission has been observed for the first time. Present results open up a new avenue to study the heavy-ion induced fission dynamics.

Machine learning technique to improve anti-neutrino detection efficiency for the ISMRAN experiment

The Indian Scintillator Matrix for Reactor Anti-Neutrino detection - ISMRAN experiment aims to detect electron anti-neutrinos ($\barν_e$) emitted from a reactor via inverse beta decay reaction (IBD). The setup, consisting of 1 ton segmented Gadolinium foil wrapped plastic scintillator array, is planned for remote reactor monitoring and sterile neutrino search. The detection of prompt positron and delayed neutron from IBD will provide the signature of $\barν_e$ event in ISMRAN. The number of segments with energy deposit ($\mathrm{N_{bars}}$) and sum total of these deposited energies are used as discriminants for identifying prompt positron event and delayed neutron capture event. However, a simple cut based selection of above variables leads to a low $\barν_e$ signal detection efficiency due to overlapping region of $\mathrm{N_{bars}}$ and sum energy for the prompt and delayed events. Multivariate analysis (MVA) tools, employing variables suitably tuned for discrimination, can be useful in such scenarios. In this work we report the results from an application of artificial neural network -- the multilayer perceptron (MLP), particularly the Bayesian extension -- MLPBNN, to the simulated signal and background events in ISMRAN. The results from application of MLP to classify prompt positron events from delayed neutron capture events on Hydrogen, Gadolinium nuclei and also from the typical reactor $γ$-ray and fast neutron backgrounds is reported. An enhanced efficiency of $\sim$91$\%$ with a background rejection of $\sim$73$\%$ for prompt selection and an efficiency of $\sim$89$\%$ with a background rejection of $\sim$71$\%$ for the delayed capture event, is achieved using the MLPBNN classifier for the ISMRAN experiment.

Determination of hexadecapole ($β_{4}$) deformation of the light-mass nucleus $^{24}$Mg using quasi-elastic measurement

Quasi-elastic scattering measurements have been performed using $^{16}$O and $^{24}$Mg projectiles off $^{90}$Zr at energies around the Coulomb barrier. Experimental data have been analyzed in the framework of coupled channels (CC) calculations using the code CCFULL. The quasi-elastic scattering excitation function and derived barrier distribution for $^{16}$O + $^{90}$Zr reaction are well reproduced by the CC calculations using the vibrational coupling strengths for $^{90}$Zr reported in the literature. Using these vibrational coupling strengths, a Bayesian analysis is carried out for $^{24}$Mg + $^{90}$Zr reaction. The $β_{2}$ and $β_{4}$ values for $^{24}$Mg are determined to be $+0.43 \pm 0.02$ and $ - 0.11 \pm 0.02$, respectively. The $β_{2}$ parameter determined in the present work is in good agreement with results obtained using inelastic scattering probes. The hexadecapole deformation of $^{24}$Mg has been measured very precisely for the first time. Present results establish that quasi-elastic scattering could provide a useful probe to determine the ground state deformation of atomic nuclei.

Understanding fission fragment mass distributions in a modified shape of random neck rupture model

The variances of the fission fragment mass distributions for symmetric fission over a wide range of the fissility of the compound nucleus have been investigated within the frame work of Random Neck Rupture Model (RNRM) proposed by Brosa et. al.,. The shape of the fissioning nucleus is generated using crel=1 in the RNRM model, which results in a smooth and continuous shape of fissioning nucleus. This modified shape of RNRM model has been used to analyse experimental data of mass variances for symmetric mass distributions of 27 systems leading to understanding of scission shape dynamics in a wide region of fissility 0.7-0.95. The neck radius is an important parameter of the RNRM model and this has been varied to fit the experimental mass variances data. The systematics of resulting neck radii are studied of as a function fissility and nuclear potential through γo, the surface energy coefficient. Further average total kinetic energies of fission fragments are studied of as a function of fissility and γo parameter. It is observed that the neck radii that fit the experimentally observed variances of the mass distributions fall into two groups and these groups are related to two groups of experimentally observed s. Empirical formulae have been obtained for the neck radii for these two groups of fissioning systems. Use of the empirical formulae for neck radii predict the mass variances reasonably well for these systems and it is shown that these empirical neck radii are better estimates than starting with the Rayleigh criterion.16pages,7 figures

Competing quasifission and asymmetric fusion-fission in neutron-deficient sub-lead nuclei

To disentangle the role of shell effects and dynamics, fission fragment mass distributions of $^{191}$Au, a nucleus in the newly identified island of mass asymmetric fission in the sub-lead region, have been measured down to excitation energy of $\approx$20 MeV above the fission barrier via two different entrance channels, viz. $^{16}$O+$^{175}$Lu and $^{37}$Cl+$^{154}$Sm reactions. Apart from having signature of the shell effects in both the cases, clear experimental evidence of quasifission has been observed in the mass distributions of the Cl induced reaction, that has also been substantiated by the theoretical calculations. This crucial evidence along with a systematic analysis of available experimental data has revealed that the dynamics in the entrance channel has significant influence on most of the reactions used earlier to explore the persistence of recently discovered mass asymmetry in $β$-delayed fission at low energy in this mass region, ignoring which might lead to ambiguity in interpreting the heavy-ion data.

A plastic scintillator array for reactor based anti-neutrino studies

Indian Scintillator Matrix for Reactor Anti-Neutrinos (ISMRAN), a plastic scintillator array (10$\times$10), is being constructed for the purpose of electron anti-neutrino ($\overline\nuup_{e}$) detection for reactor monitoring applications. A prototype detector called mini-ISMRAN, which consists of 16$\%$ of ISMRAN, has been setup for studying the detector response, background rates and event characterization in the reactor and non-reactor environment. The data acquisition system based on waveform digitizers is being used for pulse processing and event triggering. Monte-Carlo based simulations using GEANT4 are performed to optimize lead (Pb) and borated polyethylene (BP) shielding for background reduction and to study the positron, neutron and $γ$-ray response in the ISMRAN detector. Characterization of plastic scintillator detectors with known radioactive sources is done for energy, timing and position measurements. Using the energy summation and bar multiplicity selection, coincident events from $\mathrm{{}^{60}Co}$ decay are reconstructed in non-reactor environment. Results from background measurements using various detectors are quantified in reactor ON and OFF condition. The shielding of 10 cm Pb and 10 cm BP along with the requirement of hits in multiple bars, reduces the uncorrelated background in reactor ON condition.

Deep-inelastic multinucleon transfer processes in the $^{16}$O+$^{27}$Al reaction

The reaction mechanism of deep-inelastic multinucleon transfer processes in the $^{16}$O+$^{27}$Al reaction at an incident $^{16}$O energy ($E_{\rm lab}=134$ MeV) substantially above the Coulomb barrier has been studied both experimentally and theoretically. Elastic-scattering angular distribution, total kinetic energy loss spectra and angular distributions for various transfer channels have been measured. The $Q$-value- and angle-integrated isotope production cross sections have been deduced. To obtain deeper insight into the underlying reaction mechanism, we have carried out a detailed analysis based on the time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) theory. A recently developed method, TDHF+GEMINI, has been applied to evaluate production cross sections for secondary products. From a comparison between the experimental and theoretical cross sections, we find that the theory qualitatively reproduces the experimental data. Significant effects of secondary light-particle emissions are demonstrated. Possible interplay between fusion-fission, deep-inelastic, multinucleon transfer and particle evaporation processes are discussed.

Measurement of the response of a liquid scintillation detector to monoenergetic electrons and neutrons

The response of the liquid scintillator (EJ-301 equivalent to NE-213) to the monoenergetic electrons produced in Compton scattered $γ$-ray tagging has been carried out for various radioactive $γ$-ray sources. The measured electron response is found to be linear up to $\sim$4~MeVee and the resolution of the liquid scintillator at 1~MeVee is observed to be $\sim$~11\%. The pulse shape discrimination and pulse height response of the liquid scintillator for neutrons has been measured using $^7$Li(p,n$_1$)$^7$Be*(0.429 MeV) reaction. Non linear response to mono-energetic neutrons for the liquid scintillator is observed at E$_n$=5.3, 9.0 and 12.7 MeV. The measured response of the liquid scintillator for electrons and neutrons have been compared with Geant4 simulation.

In-beam spectroscopy of medium- and high-spin states in $^{133}$Ce

Medium and high-spin states in $^{133}$Ce were investigated using the $^{116}$Cd($^{22}$Ne, $5n$) reaction and the Gammasphere array. The level scheme was extended up to an excitation energy of $\sim22.8$ MeV and spin 93/2 . Eleven bands of quadrupole transitions and two new dipole bands are identified. The connections to low-lying states of the previously known, high-spin triaxial bands were firmly established, thus fixing the excitation energy and, in many cases, the spin parity of the levels. Based on comparisons with cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations and tilted axis cranking covariant density functional theory, it is shown that all observed bands are characterized by pronounced triaxiality. Competing multiquasiparticle configurations are found to contribute to a rich variety of collective phenomena in this nucleus.

Isoscalar Giant Resonance Strengths in $^{32}$S and possible excitations of superdeformed and $^{28}$Si + $α$ cluster bandheads

Isoscalar giant resonances and low spin states in $^{32}$S have been measured with inelastic $α$ scattering at extremely forward angles including zero degrees at E$_α$ = 386 MeV. By applying the multipole decomposition analysis, various excited states are classified according to their spin and parities (J$^π$), and are discussed in relation to the super deformed and $^{28}$Si + $α$ cluster bands.

Evidence for Multiple Chiral Doublet Bands in $^{133}$Ce

Two distinct sets of chiral-partner bands have been identified in the nucleus $^{133}$Ce. They constitute a multiple chiral doublet (M$χ$D), a phenomenon predicted by relativistic mean field (RMF) calculations and observed experimentally here for the first time. The properties of these chiral bands are in good agreement with results of calculations based on a combination of the constrained triaxial RMF theory and the particle-rotor model.

Giant Monopole Resonance in even-A Cd isotopes, the asymmetry term in nuclear incompressibility, and the "softness" of Sn and Cd nuclei

The isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) in even-A Cd isotopes has been studied by inelastic $α$-scattering at 100 MeV/u and at extremely forward angles, including 0deg. The asymmetry term in the nuclear incompressibility extracted from the ISGMR in Cd isotopes is found to be $K_τ = -555 \pm 75$ MeV, confirming the value previously obtained from the Sn isotopes. ISGMR strength has been computed in relativistic RPA using NL3 and FSUGold effective interactions. Both models significantly overestimate the centroids of the ISGMR strength in the Cd isotopes. Combined with other recent theoretical effort, the question of the "softness" of the open-shell nuclei in the tin region remains open still.

Integral Value Transformations: A Class of Affine Discrete Dynamical Systems and an Application

In this paper, the notion of Integral Value Transformations (IVTs), a class of Discrete Dynamical Maps has been introduced. Then notion of Affine Discrete Dynamical System (ADDS) in the light of IVTs is defined and some rudimentary mathematical properties of the system are depicted. Collatz Conjecture is one of the most enigmatic problems in 20th Century. The Conjecture was posed by German Mathematician L. Collatz in 1937. There are much advancement in generalizing and defining analogous conjectures, but even to the date, there is no fruitful result for the advancement for the settlement of the conjecture. We have made an effort to make a Collatz type problem in the domain of IVTs and we have been able to solve the problem in 2011 [1]. Here mainly, we have focused and inquired on Collatz-like ADDS. Finally, we have designed the Optimal Distributed and Parallel Environment (ODPE) in the light of ADDS.

Systematic study of projectile structure effect on fusion barrier distribution

Quasielastic excitation function measurement has been carried out for the $^{4}$He + $^{232}$Th system at $θ_{lab}$=160$^\circ$ with respect to the beam direction, to obtain a representation of the fusion barrier distribution. Using the present data along with previously measured barrier distribution results on $^{12}$C, $^{16}$O, and $^{19}$F + $^{232}$Th systems a systematic analysis has been carried out to investigate the role of target and/or projectile structures on fusion barrier distribution. It is observed that for $^{4}$He, $^{12}$C, and $^{16}$O + $^{232}$Th, reactions the couplings due to target states only are required in coupled channel fusion calculations to explain the experimental data, whereas for the $^{19}$F+ $^{232}$Th system along with the coupling of target states, inelastic states of $^{19}$F are also required to explain the experimental results on fusion-barrier distribution. The width of the barrier distribution shows interesting transition behavior when plotted with respect to the target-projectile charge product for the above systems.

Proton decay from the isoscalar giant dipole resonance in $^{58}$Ni

Proton decay from the 3$\hbarω$ isoscalar giant dipole resonance (ISGDR) in $^{58}$Ni has been measured using the ($α,α'p$) reaction at a bombarding energy of 386 MeV to investigate its decay properties. We have extracted the ISGDR strength under the coincidence condition between inelastically scattered $α$ particles at forward angles and decay protons emitted at backward angles. Branching ratios for proton decay to low-lying states of $^{57}$Co have been determined, and the results compared to predictions of recent continuum-RPA calculations. The final-state spectra of protons decaying to the low-lying states in $^{57}$Co were analyzed for a more detailed understanding of the structure of the ISGDR. It is found that there are differences in the structure of the ISGDR as a function of excitation energy.
