Pressure broadening and shift of D1 line of Ag by He, Ar and N2

We have studied experimentally pressure broadening and shift of Ag D1 line caused by He, Ar and N2 buffer gases. The measurements were done in a heat-pipe type absorption cell at a temperature of ~1000 K and gas pressures up to 1000 torr. The measured values for pressure broadening and shift (in MHz/Torr) are as follows: Ag-He 5.8(1), +1.16(2); Ag-Ar 5.2(2), -2.28(4); Ag-N2 5.2(1), -2.52(7). The "+" and "-" signs indicate the direction for the shifts to the blue and red side of the spectrum, respectively.

From yeV to TeV: Search for the Neutron Electric Dipole Moment

The existence of electric dipole moments (EDM) for fundamental particles signals time-reversal symmetry (T) violation accompanied by violation of parity (P); only upper limits have been established to date. Time-reversal violation in turn implies CP violation under the assumption that CPT is a good symmetry. The neutron is an attractive system for an EDM search, both because it is neu- tral and because a neutron EDM would be relatively easier to interpret than the comparable quantity for a nucleus or even an atom. We introduce briefly the key experimental requirements for such search and describe some aspects of the neutron EDM experiment planned for the Spallation Neutron Source at the U.S. Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Precision polarimetry with real-time mitigation of optical-window birefringence

Optical-window birefringence is frequently a major obstacle in experiments measuring changes in the polarization state of light traversing a sample under investigation. It can contribute a signal indistinguishable from that due to the sample and complicate the analysis. Here, we explore a method to measure and compensate for the birefringence of an optical window using the reflection from the last optical surface before the sample. We demonstrate that this arrangement can cancel out false signals due to the optical-window birefringence-induced ellipticity drift to about 1%, for the values of total ellipticity less than 0.25 rad.

Absolute Drell-Yan Dimuon Cross Sections in 800 GeV/c pp and pd Collisions

The Fermilab E866/NuSea Collaboration has measured the Drell-Yan dimuon cross sections in 800 GeV/$c$ $pp$ and $pd$ collisions. This represents the first measurement of the Drell-Yan cross section in $pp$ collisions over a broad kinematic region and the most extensive study to date of the Drell-Yan cross section in $pd$ collisions. The results indicate that recent global parton distribution fits provide a good description of the light antiquark sea in the nucleon over the Bjorken-$x$ range $0.03 \lesssim x < 0.15$, but overestimate the valence quark distributions as $x \to 1$.

Observation of Polarization in Bottomonium Production at sqrt(s)=38.8 GeV

We present a measurement of the polarization observed for bottomonium states produced in p-Cu collisions at sqrt(s)=38.8 GeV. The angular distribution of the decay dimuons of the Upsilon(1S) state show no polarization at small xF and pT but significant positive transverse production polarization for either pT > 1.8 GeV/c or for xF > 0.35. The Upsilon(2S+3S) unresolved states show a large transverse production polarization at all values of xF and pT measured. These observations are compared with an NRQCD calculation that predicts a transverse polarization in bottomonium production arising from quark-antiquark fusion and gluon-gluon fusion diagrams.

dbar/ubar Asymmetry and the Origin of the Nucleon Sea

The Drell-Yan cross section ratios, $σ(p+d)/σ(p+p)$, measured in Fermilab E866, have led to the first determination of $\bar d(x) / \bar u(x)$, $\bar d(x) - \bar u(x)$, and the integral of $\bar d(x) - \bar u(x)$ for the proton over the range $0.02 \le x \le 0.345$. The E866 results are compared with predictions based on parton distribution functions and various theoretical models. The relationship between the E866 results and the NMC measurement of the Gottfried integral is discussed. The agreement between the E866 results and models employing virtual mesons indicates these non-perturbative processes play an important role in the origin of the $\bar d$, $\bar u$ asymmetry in the nucleon sea.

Measurement of the Light Antiquark Flavor Asymmetry in the Nucleon Sea

A precise measurement of the ratio of Drell-Yan yields from an 800 GeV/c proton beam incident on hydrogen and deuterium targets is reported. Over 140,000 Drell-Yan muon pairs with dimuon mass M_{mu+ mu-} >= 4.5 GeV/c^2 were recorded. From these data, the ratio of anti-down (dbar) to anti-up (ubar) quark distributions in the proton sea is determined over a wide range in Bjorken-x. A strong x dependence is observed in the ratio dbar/ubar, showing substantial enhancement of dbar with respect to ubar for x<0.2. This result is in fair agreement with recent parton distribution parameterizations of the sea. For x>0.2, the observed dbar/ubar ratio is much nearer unity than given by the parameterizations.
