Studies of all order correlation effects in the isotope shifts and fine structure variation constants: Applications to Na and Mg+

We study the electron correlation effects in the calculations of isotope shifts in Na and Mg+ using the relativistic coupled-cluster method. The trends of the correlation effects are explicitly discussed and comparison of the present results with the previously reported results are given. We also present the fine structure constant variation coefficients for many states in the above systems. From these results, it is possible to find out suitable transition lines those can be used as anchor and probe lines in finding possible variation in the fine structure constant.

A Reappraisal of the Electric Dipole Moment Enhancement Factor for Thallium

The electric dipole moment (EDM) enhancement factor of atomic Tl is of considerable interest as it has been used in determining the most accurate intrinsic electron EDM limit to date. However, the value of this quantity varies from $-179$ to $-1041$ in different approximations. In view of the large uncertainties associated with many of these calculations, we have employed the relativistic coupled-cluster theory with single and double excitations and a subset of leading triple excitations and obtained the EDM enhancement factor of Tl as $-466$, which in combination with the most accurate measured value of Tl EDM yields $2.0 \times 10^{-27}\,{\mathrm e\,cm}$ as the new upper limit for the EDM of the electron. The importance of all-order correlation effects is emphasized and their trends are compared with those of two other ab initio calculations.

On-line Excited-State Laser Spectroscopy of Trapped Short-Lived Ra$^+$ Ions

As an important step towards an atomic parity violation experiment in one single trapped Ra$^+$ ion, laser spectroscopy experiments were performed with on-line produced short-lived $^{212,213,214}$Ra$^+$ ions. The isotope shift of the $6\,^2$D$_{3/2}$\,-\,$7\,^2$P$_{1/2}$ and $6\,^2$D$_{3/2}$\,-\,$7\,^2$P$_{3/2}$ transitions and the hyperfine structure constant of the $7\,^2$S$_{1/2}$ and $6\,^2$D$_{3/2}$ states in $^{213}$Ra$^+$ were measured. These values provide a benchmark for the required atomic theory. A lower limit of $232(4)$ ms for the lifetime of the metastable $6\,^2$D$_{5/2}$ state was measured by optical shelving.

Non-abelian representations of the slim dense near hexagons on 81 and 243 points

We prove that the near hexagon $Q(5,2) \times \mathbb{L}_3$ has a non-abelian representation in the extra-special 2-group $2^{1+12}_+$ and that the near hexagon $Q(5,2) \otimes Q(5,2)$ has a non-abelian representation in the extra-special 2-group $2^{1+18}_-$. The description of the non-abelian representation of $Q(5,2) \otimes Q(5,2)$ makes use of a new combinatorial construction of this near hexagon.

{\it Ab initio} studies of electron correlation effects in the atomic parity violating amplitudes in Cs and Fr

We have studied the correlation effects in Cs and Fr arising from the interplay of the residual Coulomb interaction to all orders and the neutral weak interaction which gives rise to the parity violating electric dipole transition to first order, within the framework of the relativistic coupled-cluster theory which circumvents the constrain of explicitly summing over the intermediate states. We observe that, the contributions arising from the perturbed doubly excited states are quite significant and hence, any calculation should not be considered accurate unless it includes the perturbed double excitations comprehensively. In this article, we have reported a comparative study of various results related to the parity violation in Cs and Fr.

Comparative studies of dipole polarizabilities in Sr$^+$, Ba$^+$ and Ra$^+$ and their applications to optical clocks

Static dipole polarizabilities are calculated in the ground and metastable states of Sr$^+$, Ba$^+$ and Ra$^+$ using the relativistic coupled-cluster method. Trends of the electron correlation effects are investigated in these atomic ions. We also estimate the Stark and black-body radiation shifts from these results for these systems for the transitions proposed for the optical frequency standards and compare them with available experimental data.

Relativistic Theory of the Electric Dipole Moment of an Atom due to the Electric Dipole Moment of an Electron

The relativistic theory for the electric dipole moment (EDM) of paramagnetic atoms arising from the electric dipole moment of the electron is presented. A novel approach using the relativistic coupled-cluster method that incorporates the residual Coulomb interaction to all orders and a weak parity and time-reversal violating interaction to one order has been employed in Fr to obtain the enhancement of the EDM of that atom compared to the EDM of the electron. Trends of the different correlation effects and leading contributions from different physical states are discussed. Our result in combination with that of the Fr EDM that is currently in progress, has the potential to probe the validity of the Standard Model (SM) of elementary particle physics.

Relativistic coupled-cluster studies of ionization potentials, lifetimes and polarizabilities in singly ionized calcium

Using the relativistic coupled-cluster method, we have calculated ionization potentials, E1 matrix elements and dipole polarizabilities of many low-lying states of Ca$^+$. Contributions from the Breit interaction are given explicitly for these properties. Polarizabilities of the ground and the first excited d-states are determined by evaluating the wave functions that are perturbed to first order by the electric dipole operator and the black-body radiation shifts are estimated from these results. We also report the results of branching ratios and lifetimes of the first excited p-states using both the calculated and experimental wavelengths and compare them with their measured values.

Nuclear quadrupole moment of 43Ca and hyperfine structure studies of its singly charged ion

By combining our theoretical calculation and recently measured electric quadrupole hyperfine structure constant of the $3d ^2D_{5/2}$ state in the singly ionized $^{43}$Ca, we determine its nuclear quadrupole moment to one percent accuracy. The obtained result, $-0.0444(6)b$, is about ten percent improvement over the considered standard value. We have employed the relativistic coupled-cluster theory at single and double excitations level to calculate the electronic wave functions. The accuracy of these wave functions are estimated by comparing our calculated magnetic dipole hyperfine constants with their corresponding available experimental results of many low-lying states. We also present hyperfine structure constants for other higher excited states where experimental results are not reported. Role of the Breit interaction has been investigated in these properties.

Accurate determination of the electric dipole matrix elements, lifetimes, polarizabilities and light-shift ratios in Ba+ and Ra+

We have employed the relativistic coupled-cluster theory to calculate the electric dipole matrix elements in the singly ionized barium (Ba$^+$) and radium (Ra$^+$). Matrix elements of Ba$^+$ are used to determine the light-shift ratios for two different wavelengths on which recent experiments are carried out. By combining the measured light-shift ratios and our calculations, we are able to estimate possible errors associate with the used matrix elements in Ba$^+$. Static polarizabilities of the low-lying states and lifetimes of the first excited P-states are also determined using these matrix elements in Ba$^+$. A similar approach has been followed to estimate the lifetimes and light-shift ratios in Ra$^+$.

Analysis of parity nonconservation in the Ra+-ion

We report on a theoretical analysis of the suitability of the 7s 2S1/2 <-> 6d 2D3/2 transition in singly ionized radium to measure parity nonconservation, in the light of an experiment planned at the KVI of the University of Groningen. Relativistic coupled-cluster theory has been employed to perform an ab initio calculation of the parity nonconserving electric dipole amplitude of this transition, including single, double, and leading triple excitations. We discuss the prospects for a sub-1% precision test of the electroweak theory of particle physics.

Ab initio determination of polarizabilities and van der Waals coefficients of Li atoms using the relativistic CCSD(T) method

We report a new technique to determine the van der Waals coeffcients of lithium (Li) atoms based on the relativistic coupled-cluster theory. These quantities are determined using the imaginary parts of the scalar dipole and quadrupole polarizabilities, which are evaluated using the approach that we have proposed in [1]. Our procedure is fully ab initio, and avoids the sum-over-the-states method. We present the dipole and quadrupole polarizabilities of many of the low-lying excited states of Li. Also, the off-diagonal dipole and quadrupole polarizabilites between some of the low-lying states of Li are calculated.

Phase separated charge density wave phase in two species extended Bose-Hubbard model

We study the quantum phase transitions in a two component bose-mixture in a one-dimensional optical lattice. The calculations have been performed in the framework of the extended Bose-Hubbard model using the finite size density matrix renormalization group method. We obtain different phase transitions for the system for integer filling. When the inter-species on-site and the nearest neighbor interactions are larger than the intra-species on-site and also the nearest neighbor interactions, the system exhibits a phase separated charge density wave (PSCDW) order that is characterized by the two species being spatially separated and existing in the density wave phases.

Intrinsic Electric Dipole Moments of Paramagnetic Atoms: Rubidium and Cesium

The electric dipole moment (EDM) of paramagnetic atoms is sensitive to the intrinsic EDM contribution from that of its constituent electrons and a scalar--pseudo-scalar (S-PS) electron-nucleus interactions. The electron EDM and the S-PS EDM contribution to atomic EDM scales as Z^3. Thus, the heavy paramagnetic atomic systems will exhibit large enhancement factors. However, the nature of the coupling is so small that it becomes an interest of high precision atomic experiments. In this work, we have computed the EDM enhancement factors of the ground states of Rb and Cs due to both the electron EDM and the S-PS EDM using the relativistic coupled-cluster (RCC) theory. The importance of obtaining the precise enhancement factors and the experimental results in deducing a reliable limit on the electron EDM is emphasized.

Electron correlation effects in the dipole polarizabilities of the ground states of Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba and Yb

We investigate the role of electron correlation effects in the electric dipole polarizabilities of the ground states of the alkaline earth and ytterbium atoms by employing the relativistic coupled-cluster (RCC) theory. These effects are incorporated via the residual Coulomb interaction to all orders in the RCC singles and doubles approximation. The perturbed wavefunctions used in the calculations of the polarizabilities are obtained by directly solving the first order perturbed RCC equations, thereby avoiding the sum-over-states approach. Our results are compared with other calculations and available experimental data.

Relativistic calculations of the lifetimes and hyperfine structure constants in $^{67}$Zn$^{+}$

This work presents accurate {\it ab initio} determination of the magnetic dipole (M1) and electric quadrupole (E2) hyperfine structure constants for the ground and a few low-lying excited states in $^{67}$Zn$^{+}$, which is one of the interesting systems in fundamental physics. The coupled-cluster (CC) theory within the relativistic framework has been used here in this calculations. Long standing demands for a relativistic and highly correlated calculations like CC can be able to resolve the disagreements among the lifetime estimations reported previously for a few low-lying states of Zn$^{+}$. The role of different electron correlation effects in the determination of these quantities are discussed and their contributions are presented.

Theoretical spectroscopic studies of the atomic transitions and lifetimes of low-lying states in Ti IV

The astrophysically important electric quadrupole (E2) and magnetic dipole (M1) transitions for the low-lying states of triply ionized titanium (Ti IV) are calculated very accurately using a state-of-art all-order many-body theory called Coupled Cluster (CC) theory in the relativistic frame-work. Different many-body correlations of the CC theory has been estimated by studying the core and valence electron excitations to the unoccupied states. The calculated excitation energies of different states are in very good agreement with the measurements. Also we compare our calculated electric dipole (E1) transition amplitudes of few transitions with recent many-body calculations by different groups. We have also carried out the calculations for the lifetimes of the low-lying states of Ti IV. A long lifetime is found for the first excited 3d$^{2}D_{5/2}$ state, which suggested that Ti IV may be one of the useful candidates for many important studies. Most of the results reported here are not available in the literature, to the best of our knowledge.

Relativistic ab initio study of forbidden transitions of singly ionized Zinc using CCSD(T)

In this work, the {\it ab initio} calculations have been carried out to study the oscillator strengths corresponding to `forbidden transitions' of astrophysically important electromagnetic transitions of singly ionized zinc, Zn II. Many important electron correlations are considered to all-orders using the relativistic coupled-cluster theory. Calculated ionization potentials are compared with the experimental values, wherever available. To our knowledge, oscillator strengths of magnetic dipole and electric quardupole transitions are estimated for the first time. The transitions span in the range of ultraviolet, visible, and near infrared regions and are important for astrophysical observations.
