Discovery and Identification of W' Bosons at e+e- Colliders

We report on studies of the sensitivity to extra gauge bosons of the reactions e^+ e^- -> nu nubar gamma and e gamma -> nu q + X to extract discovery limits for W' 's. The discovery potential for a W' is, for some models, comparable to that of the LHC. These processes may be also useful for determining W' and Z' couplings to fermions which would complement measurements made at the Large Hadron Collider.

Analytically integrated results for heavy fermion production in two-photon collisions and a high precision $α_s$ determination

The cross section for massive fermion production in two-photon collisions was examined at next-to-leading order in QCD/QED for general photon helicity. The delta function (virtual+soft) part of the differential cross section was analytically integrated over the final state phase space. Series expansions for the complete differential and total cross sections were given up to tenth order in the parameter $β$. These were shown to be of practical use and revealed much structure. Accurate parametrizations of the total cross sections were given, valid up to higher energies. The above results were applied to top quark production in the region not too far above threshold. The cross section was shown to be quite sensitive to $α_s$ in the appropriate energy region.

Drell-Yan forward-backward and spin asymmetries for arbitrary vector boson production at next-to-leading order

Longitudinally polarized, unpolarized and forward-backward mass differential cross sections for Drell-Yan lepton-pair production by arbitrary vector bosons are calculated in next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD. Analytical results are presented in a form valid for all consistent $n$-dimensional regularization schemes, with the mass factorization scheme kept general. NLO predictions for all Drell-Yan type processes ($W^\pm$, $Z$ and $γ^*$) at BNL's relativistic heavy ion collider (RHIC) are made using polarized parton distributions which fit the recent deep-inelastic scattering data. These are examined as tools in the determination of the polarized parton distributions and the unpolarized $\bar{u}/\bar{d}$ ratio. NLO predictions for the forward-backward lepton asymmetry at Fermilab are made and the precision determination of $\sin^2 θ_W$ from future runs is studied. In all the above, the QCD corrections are found to be significant. An introductory discussion is given of various theoretical issues, such as allowable factorization and regularization schemes, and scale dependences.

Heavy-Quark Production by Polarized and Unpolarized Photons in Next-to-Leading Order

Complete analytical results for the production of heavy-quark pairs by polarized and unpolarized photons in next-to-leading order are presented. Two-, three- and two plus three-jet cross sections for total photon spin $J_z=0,\pm 2$ are presented for $b\bar{b}(g)$ production. The 2-jet cross sections are considered as a background to $γγ\rightarrow H^* \rightarrow b\bar{b}$ (standard model). Top production, not too far above threshold, is also considered for $J_z=0,\pm 2$. For both $b$- and $t$-quark production, the higher order QCD corrections are found to be significant.

QCD Corrections to Spin Dependent Drell-Yan and a Global Subtraction Scheme

We present QCD corrections to the Drell-Yan process in the transversely polarized, longitudinally polarized and unpolarized cases. The analytical results are presented in a form valid for all $n$-dimensional regularization schemes. A universal mass factorization scheme is presented in which the results reduce to those of dimensional reduction. The connection between the parton distributions and fragmentation functions of dimensional reduction and those of dimensional regularization is elucidated in a simple manner. Numerical results are presented for proton-proton collisions at energies relevant to RHIC (Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider). The perturbative stability of the transverse and longitudinal asymmetries is investigated.
