Point Process Models of 1/f Noise and Internet Traffic

We present a simple model reproducing the long-range autocorrelations and the power spectrum of the web traffic. The model assumes the traffic as Poisson flow of files with size distributed according to the power-law. In this model the long-range autocorrelations are independent of the network properties as well as of inter-packet time distribution.

Point process model of 1/f noise versus a sum of Lorentzians

We present a simple point process model of $1/f^β$ noise, covering different values of the exponent $β$. The signal of the model consists of pulses or events. The interpulse, interevent, interarrival, recurrence or waiting times of the signal are described by the general Langevin equation with the multiplicative noise and stochastically diffuse in some interval resulting in the power-law distribution. Our model is free from the requirement of a wide distribution of relaxation times and from the power-law forms of the pulses. It contains only one relaxation rate and yields $1/f^ β$ spectra in a wide range of frequency. We obtain explicit expressions for the power spectra and present numerical illustrations of the model. Further we analyze the relation of the point process model of $1/f$ noise with the Bernamont-Surdin-McWhorter model, representing the signals as a sum of the uncorrelated components. We show that the point process model is complementary to the model based on the sum of signals with a wide-range distribution of the relaxation times. In contrast to the Gaussian distribution of the signal intensity of the sum of the uncorrelated components, the point process exhibits asymptotically a power-law distribution of the signal intensity. The developed multiplicative point process model of $1/f^β$ noise may be used for modeling and analysis of stochastic processes in different systems with the power-law distribution of the intensity of pulsing signals.

Time problem in quantum mechanics and its analysis by the concept of weak measurement

The model of weak measurements is applied to various problems, related to the time problem in quantum mechanics. The review and generalization of the theoretical analysis of the time problem in quantum mechanics based on the concept of weak measurements are presented. A question of the time interval the system spends in the specified state, when the final state of the system is given, is raised. Using the concept of weak measurements the expression for such time is obtained. The results are applied to the tunneling problem. A procedure for the calculation of the asymptotic tunneling and reflection times is proposed. Examples for delta-form and rectangular barrier illustrate the obtained results. Using the concept of weak measurements the arrival time probability distribution is defined by analogy with the classical mechanics. The proposed procedure is suitable to the free particles and to particles subjected to an external potential, as well. It is shown that such an approach imposes an inherent limitation to the accuracy of the arrival time definition.

Stochastic nonlinear differential equation generating 1/f noise

Starting from the simple point process model of 1/f noise we derive a stochastic nonlinear differential equation for the signal exhibiting 1/f noise in any desirably wide range of frequency. A stochastic differential equation (the general Langevin equation with a multiplicative noise) that gives 1/f noise is derived for the first time. The solution of the equation exhibits the power-law distribution. The process with 1/f noise is demonstrated by the numerical solution of the derived equation with the appropriate restriction of the diffusion of the signal in some finite interval.

General expression for the quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects

In this paper we investigate the quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects without using any particular model of the measurement. Making a few assumptions about the measurement process we derive an expression for the jump probability during the measurement. From this expression the equation, obtained by Kofman and Kurizki [Nature (London) 405, 546 (2000)] can be derived as a special case.

Weak measurement of arrival time

The arrival time probability distribution is defined by analogy with the classical mechanics. The difficulty of requirement to have the values of non-commuting operators is circumvented using the concept of weak measurements. The proposed procedure is suitable to the free particles and to the particles subjected to an external potential, as well. It is shown that such an approach imposes an inherent limitation to the accuracy of the arrival time determination.

On the intrinsic origin of 1/f noise

The problem of the intrinsic origin of 1/f noise is considered. Currents and signals consisting of a sequence of pulses are analysed. It is shown that intrinsic origin of 1/f noise is a random walk of the average time between subsequent pulses of the pulse sequence, or interevent time. This results in the long-memory process for the pulse occurrence time and in 1/f type power spectrum of the signal.

Models for generation 1/f noise

Simple analytically solvable models are proposed exhibiting 1/f spectrum in wide range of frequency. The signals of the models consist of pulses (point process) which interevent times fluctuate about some average value, obeying an autoregressive process with very small damping. The power spectrum of the process can be expressed by the Hooge formula. The proposed models reveal possible origin of 1/f noise, i.e., random increments of the time intervals between pulses or interevent time of the process (Brownian motion in the time axis).

Time problem in quantum mechanics and weak measurements

A question of the time the system spends in the specified state, when the final state of the system is given, is raised. The model of weak measurements is used to obtain the expression for the time. The conditions for determination of such a time are obtained.

Real measurements and Quantum Zeno effect

In 1977, Mishra and Sudarshan showed that an unstable particle would never be found decayed while it was continuously observed. They called this effect the quantum Zeno effect (or paradox). Later it was realized that the frequent measurements could also accelerate the decay (quantum anti-Zeno effect). In this paper we investigate the quantum Zeno effect using the definite model of the measurement. We take into account the finite duration and the finite accuracy of the measurement. A general equation for the jump probability during the measurement is derived. We find that the measurements can cause inhibition (quantum Zeno effect) or acceleration (quantum anti-Zeno effect) of the evolution, depending on the strength of the interaction with the measuring device and on the properties of the system. However, the evolution cannot be fully stopped.

Autoregressive model of 1/f noise

An analytically solvable model is proposed exhibiting 1/f spectrum in any desirably wide range of frequency (but excluding the point f=0). The model consists of pulses whose recurrence times obey an autoregressive process with very small damping.

Synchronization of chaotic systems driven by identical noise

An analysis of transition from chaotic to nonchaotic behavior and synchronization in an ensemble of systems driven by identical random forces is presented. The synchronization phenomenon is investigated in the ensemble of particles moving with friction in the time-dependent potential and driven by the identical noise. The threshold values of the parameters for transition from chaotic to nonchaotic behavior are obtained and dependencies of the Lyapunov exponents and power spectral density of the current of the ensemble of particles on the nonlinearity of the systems and intensity of the driven force are analyzed.

Kepler map

We present a consecutive derivation of mapping equations of motion for the one-dimensional classical hydrogenic atom in a monochromatic field of any frequency. We analyze this map in the case of high and low relative frequency of the field and transition from regular to chaotic behavior. We show that the map at aphelion is suitable for investigation of transition to chaotic behavior also in the low frequency field and even for adiabatic ionization when the strength of the external field is comparable with the Coulomb field. Moreover, the approximate analytical criterion (taking into account the electron's energy increase by the influence of the field) yields a threshold field strength quite close to the numerical results. We reveal that transition from adiabatic to chaotic ionization takes place when the ratio of the field frequency to the electron Kepler frequency approximately equals 0.1. For the dynamics and ionization in a very low frequency field the Kepler map can be converted to a differential equation and solved analytically. The threshold field of the adiabatic ionization obtained from the map is only 1.5% lower than the exact field strength of static field ionization.

Modeling 1/f noise

The noise of signals or currents consisting from a sequence of pulses, elementary events or moving discrete objects (particles) is analyzed. A simple analytically solvable model is investigated in detail both analytically and numerically. It is shown that 1/f noise may result from the statistics of the pulses transit times with random increments of the time intervals between the pulses. The model also serves as a basis for revealing parameter dependences of 1/f noise and allows one to make some generalizations. As a result the intensity of 1/f noise is expressed through the distribution and characteristic functions of the time intervals between the subsequent transit times of the pulses. The conclusion that 1/f noise may result from the clustering of the signal pulses, elementary events or particles can be drawn from the analysis of the model systems.

Maps for analysis of nonlinear dynamics

Area preserving maps provide the simplest and most accurate means to visualize and quantify the behavior of nonlinear systems. Convenience of the mapping equations of motion for investigation of transition to chaotic behavior in dynamics of classical atom in microwave field, transition to nonchaotic behavior in randomly driven systems and induced quantum dynamics of simple and multilevel systems is demonstrated.

Modelling by maps of two-frequency microwave ionization of hydrogen atoms

Mapping equations of motion of the highly exited classical atom in a monochromatic field are generalized for the two-frequency microwave field. Analysis of the obtained equations indicates to the weak sensitivity of the position of the recently observed ionization peak near the main resonance to the frequency and amplitude of the additional microwave field. In the high frequency region, however, the sensitivity of the enhanced ionization peaks on the additional field frequency is predicted.

Simple model of 1/f noise

Simple analytically solvable model of 1/f noise is proposed. The model consists of one or few particles moving in the closed contour. The drift period of the particle round the contour fluctuates about some average value, e.g. due to the external random perturbations of the system's parameters. The model contains only one relaxation rate, however, the power spectral density of the current of particles reveals an exact 1/f spectrum in any desirable wide range of frequency and can be expressed by the Hooge formula. It is likely that the analysis and the generalizations of the model can strongly influence on the understanding of the origin of 1/f noise.

On the 1/f fluctuations in the nonlinear systems affected by noise

We investigate a problem of the necessary and sufficient conditions for appearance of the 1/f fluctuations in the simple systems affected by the external random perturbations, i.e. the power spectral density of the flux of particles moving in some contours and perturbed by the external forces. In some cases we observe the 1/f behavior but only in some range of frequencies and parameters of the systems.
