Momentum and excitation energy dependence of the "waterfalls" in cuprates

Using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy we have studied the momentum and photon energy dependence of the anomalous high-energy dispersion, termed "waterfalls", between the Fermi level and 1 eV binding energy in several high-Tc superconductors. We observe strong changes of the dispersion between different Brillouin zones and a strong dependence on the photon energy around 75 eV, which we associate with the resonant photoemission at the Cu 3p3d_{x^2-y^2} edge. We conclude that the high-energy "waterfall" dispersion results from a strong suppression of the photoemission intensity at the center of the Brillouin zone due to matrix element effects and is, therefore, not an intrinsic feature of the spectral function. This indicates that the new high energy scale in the electronic structure of cuprates derived from the "waterfall"-like dispersion may be incorrect.

Doping induced magnetic clusters and Co spin state transition in Na_xCoO_2 with 0.78<x<.97

By muon spin rotation we investigated the magnetic properties of a series of highly Na doped NaxCoO2 single crystals with 0.78(1) 0.04 until they yield a bulk magnetic state near x=0.78. Evidence for a strong (likely geometrical) frustration of the magnetic order is obtained from the anomalous doping dependence of the spin fluctuation rate (above the ordering temperature) which is strongly enhanced at x=0.78 as compared to x=0.97.

Optical response of ferromagnetic YTiO_3 studied by spectral ellipsometry

We have studied the temperature dependence of spectroscopic ellipsometry spectra of an electrically insulating, nearly stoichiometric YTiO_3 single crystal with ferromagnetic Curie temperature T_C = 30 K. The optical response exhibits a weak but noticeable anisotropy. Using a classical dispersion analysis, we identify three low-energy optical bands at 2.0, 2.9, and 3.7 eV. Although the optical conductivity spectra are only weakly temperature dependent below 300 K, we are able to distinguish high- and low-temperature regimes with a distinct crossover point around 100 K. The low-temperature regime in the optical response coincides with the temperature range in which significant deviations from Curie-Weiss mean field behavior are observed in the magnetization. Using an analysis based on a simple superexchange model, the spectral weight rearrangement can be attributed to intersite d_i^1d_j^1 \longrightarrow d_i^2d_j^0 optical transitions. In particular, Kramers-Kronig consistent changes in optical spectra around 2.9 eV can be associated with the high-spin-state (^3T_1) optical transition. This indicates that other mechanisms, such as weakly dipole-allowed p-d transitions and/or exciton-polaron excitations, can contribute significantly to the optical band at 2 eV. The recorded optical spectral weight gain of 2.9 eV optical band is significantly suppressed and anisotropic, which we associate with complex spin-orbit-lattice phenomena near ferromagnetic ordering temperature in YTiO_3.

Superconductivity in epitaxial thin films of NaxCoO2 y D2O

The observation of superconductivity in the layered transition metal oxide NaxCoO2 y H2O (K. Takada et al., Nature 422, 53 (2003)) has caused a tremendous upsurge of scientific interest due to its similarities and its differences to the copper based high-temperature superconductors. Two years after the discovery, we report the fabrication of single-phase superconducting epitaxial thin films of Na0.3CoO2 x 1.3 D2O grown by pulsed laser deposition technique. This opens additional roads for experimental research exploring the superconducting state and the phase diagram of this unconventional material.

Spectroscopic distinction between the normal state pseudogap and the superconducting gap of cuprate high T_{c} superconductors

We report on broad-band infrared ellipsometry measurements of the c-axis conductivity of underdoped RBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-d} (R=Y, Nd, and La) single crystals. Our data provide a detailed account of the spectral weight (SW) redistributions due to the normal state pseudogap (PG) and the superconducting (SC) gap. They show that these phenomena involve different energy scales, exhibit distinct doping dependencies and thus are likely of different origin. In particular, the SW redistribution in the PG state closely resembles the one of a conventional charge- or spin density wave (CDW or SDW) system.

On Magnetic Interlayer Coupling and Proximity Effect in a La$_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_3$(10 nm)/YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$(10 nm) Superlattice

We present a study of interlayer coupling and proximity effects in a La$_{0.66}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_3$(10 nm)/YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$(10 nm) superlattice. Using element-sensitive x-ray probes, the magnetic state of Mn can be probed without seeing the strong diamagnetism of the superconductor, which makes this approach ideal to study changes in the magnetic properties across the superconducting transition. By a combined experiment using {\it in situ} transport measurements during polarized soft x-ray measurements, we were able to see no noticeable influence of the superconducting state on the magnetic properties and no evidence for magnetic coupling across a 10 nm YBCO layer.

Comment on "Raman spectroscopy study of NaxCoO2 and superconducting NaxCoO2 yH2O"

The effect of surface degradation of the thermolectric cobaltite on Raman spectra is discussed and compared to experimental results from Co3O4 single crystals. We conclude that on NaCl flux grown NaxCoO2 crystals a surface layer of Co3O4 easily forms that leads to the observation of an intense phonon around 700 cm-1 [Phys. Rev. B 70, 052502 (2004)]. Raman spectra on freshly cleaved crystals from optical floating zone ovens do not show such effects and have a high frequency phonon cut-off at approximately 600 cm -1 [Phys. Rev. Lett 96, 167204 (2006)]. We discuss the relation of structural dimensionality, electronic correlations and the high frequency phonon cut-off of the thermolectric cobaltite.

Dispersion of the odd magnetic resonant mode in near-optimally doped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d

We report a neutron scattering study of the spin excitation spectrum in the superconducting state of slightly overdoped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d system (Tc=87 K). We focus on the dispersion of the resonance peak in the superconducting state that is due to a S=1 collective mode. The measured spin excitation spectrum bears a strong similarity to the spectrum of the YBa2Cu3O6+x system for a similar doping level i.e. x= 0.95-1), which consists of intersecting upward- and downward-dispersing branches. A close comparison of the threshold of the electron-hole spin flip continuum, deduced from angle resolved photo-emission measurements in the same system, indicates that the magnetic response in the superconducting state is confined, in both energy and momentum, below the gapped Stoner continuum. In contrast to YBa2Cu3O6+x, the spin excitation spectrum is broader than the experimental resolution. In the framework of an itinerant-electron model, we quantitatively relate this intrinsic energy width to the superconducting gap distribution observed in scanning tunnelling microscopy experiments. Our study further suggests a significant in-plane anisotropy of the magnetic response.

Odd and even magnetic resonant modes in highly overdoped Bi_2 Sr_2 Ca Cu_2 O_{8+delta}

We present inelastic neutron scattering data on highly overdoped Bi_2 Sr_2 Ca Cu_2 O_{8+δ} single crystals with superconducting transition temperature T_C=70 K and, for comparison, a nearly optimally doped crystal with T_C=87 K. In both samples, magnetic resonant modes with odd and even symmetry under exchange of the two CuO_2 layers in the unit cell are observed. In the overdoped sample, the linewidth of the odd mode is reduced compared with the optimally doped sample. This finding is discussed in conjunction with recent evidence for intrinsic inhomogeneities in this compound. The data on odd and even resonant excitations are otherwise fully consistent with trends established on the basis of data on YBa_2Cu_3O_{6+x}. This confirms the universality of these findings and extends them into the highly overdoped regime of the phase diagram.

Coexistence of metallicity and superconductivity in adjacent bilayers of a high-Tc superconductor

Experimental studies of the electronic structure remain the basic means for understanding the nature of high-temperature superconductivity (HTSC) and testing relevant theoretical models. Appreciable contributions to establish the overall picture in HTSC have recently been made by investigations on the charge dynamics in BSCCO (ref. 1) and the spin dynamics in YBCO, using Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (ARPES) and Inelastic Neutron Scattering (INS), respectively. Concentration of each of these techniques on a "suitable" compound turns out to be a barrier on the way to a crucial quantitative test allowing to support or discard spin fluctuations (interaction between the charge and spin degrees of freedom) as a possible origin for the pairing in doped cuprates. Here we solve the long-standing puzzle of ARPES on YBCO by showing that the photoelectron spectrum of YBCO generally includes two components: One from the topmost anomalously overdoped metallic CuO2 bilayer and the other from the next superconducting bilayer that retains the bulk properties. Our findings clearly show the opening of a large superconducting gap and, for the first time, demonstrate the anisotropic renormalization in the bulk component of YBCO, supporting the universality of these effects for different cuprate families. With our study we re-open this cuprate family for new systematic ARPES investigations.

Momentum-resolved electron-phonon interaction in lead determined by neutron resonance spin-echo spectroscopy

Neutron resonance spin-echo spectroscopy was used to monitor the temperature evolution of the linewidths of transverse acoustic phonons in lead across the superconducting transition temperature, $T_c$, over an extended range of the Brillouin zone. For phonons with energies below the superconducting energy gap, a linewidth reduction of maximum amplitude $\sim 6 μ$eV was observed below $T_c$. The electron-phonon contribution to the phonon lifetime extracted from these data is in satisfactory overall agreement with {\it ab-initio} lattice-dynamical calculations, but significant deviations are found.

Spin-Wave Lifetimes Throughout the Brillouin Zone

We use a neutron spin-echo method with $μ$eV resolution to determine the lifetimes of spin waves in the prototypical antiferromagnet MnF$_2$ over the entire Brillouin zone. A theory based on the interaction of magnons with longitudinal spin fluctuations provides an excellent, parameter-free description of the data, except at the lowest momenta and temperatures. This is surprising, given the prominence of alternative theories based on magnon-magnon interactions in the literature. The results and technique open up a new avenue for the investigation of fundamental concepts in magnetism. The technique also allows measurement of the lifetimes of other elementary excitations (such as lattice vibrations) throughout the Brillouin zone.

Neutron diffraction study of YVO3, NdVO3, and TbVO3

The structural and magnetic properties of YVO3, NdVO3 and TbVO3 were investigated by single-crystal and powder neutron diffraction. YVO3 shows a structural phase transition at 200 K from an orthorhombic structure with the space group Pbnm to a monoclinic one with the space group P21/b. But supplementary high-resolution synchrotron diffraction experiments showed that the monoclinic distortion is extremely small. A group theoretical analysis shows that this magnetic state in the monoclinic phase is incompatible with the lattice structure, unless terms of higher than bilinear order in the spin operators are incorporated in the spin Hamiltonian. This observation is discussed in the light of recent theories invoking unusual many-body correlations between the vanadium t2g orbitals. A structural phase transition back to the orthorhombic space group Pbnm is observed upon cooling below 77 K. This transition is accompanied by a rearrangement of the magnetic structure into a mode compatible with the lattice structure. The crystal structures of NdVO3 and TbVO3 are closely similar to that of YVO3. However, only a single magnetic phase transition was found in the vanadium sublattice down to 9.5 K. Below 60 K the magnetic moments of the Nd- and Tb-ions are gradually polarized by the ordered vanadium moments. Below 11 K, we found a noncollinear order of the terbium moments.

Crystal structure and high-field magnetism of La2CuO4

Neutron diffraction was used to determine the crystal structure and magnetic ordering pattern of a La2CuO4 single crystal, with and without applied magnetic field. A previously unreported, subtle monoclinic distortion of the crystal structure away from the orthorhombic space group Bmab was detected. The distortion is also present in lightly Sr-doped crystals. A refinement of the crystal structure shows that the deviation from orthorhombic symmetry is predominantly determined by displacements of the apical oxygen atoms. An in-plane magnetic field is observed to drive a continuous reorientation of the copper spins from the orthorhombic b-axis to the c-axis, directly confirming predictions based on prior magnetoresistance and Raman scattering experiments. A spin-flop transition induced by a c-axis oriented field previously reported for non-stoichiometric La2CuO4 is also observed, but the transition field (11.5 T) is significantly larger than that in the previous work.

Incommensurate structure of the spin-Peierls compound TiOCl

We report on a detailed single crystal x-ray diffraction study of the unconventional spin-Peierls compound TiOCl. The intermediate phase of TiOCl is characterized by an incommensurate modulation which is virtually identical to that recently found in the homologue compound TiOBr. The first order phase transition between the spin-Peierls ground state and the incommensurate phase reveals the same kind of thermal hysteresis in both, its crystal structure and magnetic susceptibility. A weak, but significant magnetic field effect is found for this phase transition with a field induced shift of the transition temperature of Delta Tc1= -0.13 K for an applied field of B=10 T along the chain direction. The field induced changes of the incommensurate crystal structure are compatible with a scenario of competing intra- and inter-chain interactions.

Doping Dependence of Bilayer Resonant Spin Excitations in $\bf (Y,Ca)Ba_2Cu_3O_{6+x}$

Resonant magnetic modes with odd and even symmetries were studied by inelastic neutron scattering experiments in the bilayer high-$T_c$ superconductor $\rm Y_{1-x}Ca_{x}Ba_2Cu_3O_{6+y}$ over a wide doping range. The threshold of the spin excitation continuum in the superconducting state, deduced from the energies and spectral weights of both modes, is compared with the superconducting d-wave gap, measured on the same samples by electronic Raman scattering in the $B_{1g}$ symmetry. Above a critical doping level of $δ\simeq 0.19$, both mode energies and the continuum threshold coincide. We find a simple scaling relationship between the characteristic energies and spectral weights of both modes, which indicates that the resonant modes are bound states in the superconducting energy gap, as predicted by the spin-exciton model of the resonant mode.

Magnetoresistance Effects in SrFeO(3-x): Dependence on Phase Composition and Relation to Magnetic and Charge Order

Single crystals of iron(IV) rich oxides SrFeO(3-x) with controlled oxygen content have been studied by Moessbauer spectroscopy, magnetometry, magnetotransport measurements, Raman spectroscopy, and infrared ellipsometry in order to relate the large magnetoresistance (MR) effects in this system to phase composition, magnetic and charge order. It is shown that three different types of MR effects occur. In cubic SrFeO3 (x = 0) a large negative MR of 25% at 9 T is associated with a hitherto unknown 60 K magnetic transition and a subsequent drop in resistivity. The 60 K transition appears in addition to the onset of helical ordering at ~130 K. In crystals with vacancy-ordered tetragonal SrFeO(3-x) as majority phase (x ~0.15) a coincident charge/antiferromagnetic ordering transition near 70 K gives rise to a negative giant MR effect of 90% at 9 T. A positive MR effect is observed in tetragonal and orthorhombic materials with increased oxygen deficiency (x = 0.19, 0.23) which are insulating at low temperatures. Phase mixtures can result in a complex superposition of these different MR phenomena. The MR effects in SrFeO(3-x) differ from those in manganites as no ferromagnetic states are involved.

"Kinks", Nodal Bilayer Splitting and Interband Scattering in YBCO

We apply the new-generation ARPES methodology to the most widely studied cuprate superconductor YBCO. Considering the nodal direction, we found noticeable renormalization effects known as "kinks" both in the quasiparticle dispersion and scattering rate, the bilayer splitting and evidence for strong interband scattering -- all the characteristic features of the nodal quasiparticles detected earlier in BSCCO. The typical energy scale and the doping dependence of the "kinks" clearly point to their intimate relation with the spin-1 resonance seen in the neutron scattering experiments. Our findings strongly suggest a universality of the electron dynamics in the bilayer superconducting cuprates and a dominating role of the spin-fluctuations in the formation of the quasiparticles along the nodal direction.
