Revisiting the Parallax of the Isolated Neutron Star RX J185635-3754 Using HST/ACS Imaging

We have redetermined the parallax and proper motion of the nearby isolated neutron star RX~J185635-3754. We used eight observations with the high resolution camera of the HST/ACS taken from 2002 through 2004. We performed the astrometric fitting using five independent methods, all of which yielded consistent results. The mean estimate of the distance is 123 (+11, -15) pc (1 sigma), in good agreement with our earlier published determination.

CMS Software Distribution on the LCG and OSG Grids

The efficient exploitation of worldwide distributed storage and computing resources available in the grids require a robust, transparent and fast deployment of experiment specific software. The approach followed by the CMS experiment at CERN in order to enable Monte-Carlo simulations, data analysis and software development in an international collaboration is presented. The current status and future improvement plans are described.

Magnetotransport in the Normal State of La1.85Sr0.15Cu(1-y)Zn(y)O4 Films

We have studied the magnetotransport properties in the normal state for a series of La1.85Sr0.15Cu(1-y)Zn(y)O4 films with values of y, between 0 and 0.12. A variable degree of compressive or tensile strain results from the lattice mismatch between the substrate and the film, and affects the transport properties differently from the influence of the zinc impurities. In particular, the orbital magnetoresistance (OMR) varies with y but is strain-independent. The relations for the resistivity and the Hall angle and the proportionality between the OMR and tan^2 theta are followed about 70 K. We have been able to separate the strain and impurity effects by rewriting the above relations, where each term is strain-independent and depends on y only. We also find that changes in the lattice constants give rise to closely the same fractional changes in other terms of the equation. The OMR is more strongly supressed by the addition of impurities than tan^2 theta. We conclude that the relaxation ratethat governs Hall effect is not the same as for the magnetoresistance. We also suggest a correspondence between the transport properties and the opening of the pseudogap at a temperature which changes when the La-sr ratio changes, but does not change with the addition of the zinc impurities.

The dynamics of the spherical p-spin model: from microscopic to asymptotics

We have numerically investigated the mean-field dynamics of the the $p$-spin interaction spin glass model with p=3 using an efficient method of integrating the dynamic equations. We find a new time scale associated with the onset of the breakdown of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem in the intermediate time regime. We also find that the off-equilibrium relaxation exhibits a sub-aging behavior in the intermediate times and crosses over to a simple aging in the asymptotic regime.

The connectedness of the moduli space of maps to homogeneous spaces

We prove the connectedness of the moduli space of maps (of fixed genus and homology class) to the homogeneous space G/P by degeneration via the maximal torus action. In the genus 0 case, the irreducibility of the moduli of maps is a direct consequence of connectedness. An analysis of a related Bialynicki-Birula stratification of the map space yields a rationality result: the (coarse) moduli space of genus 0 maps to G/P is a rational variety. The rationality argument depends essentially upon rationality results for quotients of SL2 representations proven by Katsylo and Bogomolov.

Glassy Relaxation and Breakdown of the Stokes-Einstein Relation in the Two Dimensional Lattice Coulomb Gas of Fractional Charges

We present Monte Carlo simulation results on the equilibrium relaxation of the two dimensional lattice Coulomb gas with fractional charges, which exhibits a close analogy to the primary relaxation of fragile supercooled liquids. Single particle and collective relaxation dynamics show that the Stokes-Einstein relation is violated at low temperatures, which can be characterized by a fractional power law relation between the self-diffusion coefficient and the characteristic relaxation time. The microscopic spatially heterogeneous structure responsible for the violation is identified.

Search for Charged Strange Quark Matter Produced in 11.5 A GeV/c Au + Pb Collisions

We present results of a search for strange quark matter (strangelets) in 11.5 A GeV/c Au+Pb collisions from the 1994 and 1995 runs of experiment E864 at Brookhaven's AGS. We observe no strangelet candidates and set a 90% confidence level upper limit of approximately 3x10**-8 per 10% central interaction for the production of |Z|=1 and |Z|=2 strangelets over a large mass range and with metastable lifetimes of about 50 ns or more. These results place constraints primarily on quark-gluon plasma based production models for strangelets.
