The QCD Phase Diagram at Nonzero Temperature, Baryon and Isospin Chemical Potentials in Random Matrix Theory

We introduce a random matrix model with the symmetries of QCD at finite temperature and chemical potentials for baryon number and isospin. We analyze the phase diagram of this model in the chemical potential plane for different temperatures and quark masses. We find a rich phase structure with five different phases separated by both first and second order lines. The phases are characterized by the pion condensate and the chiral condensate for each of the flavors. In agreement with lattice simulations, we find that in the phase with zero pion condensate the critical temperature depends in the same way on the baryon number chemical potential and on the isospin chemical potential. At nonzero quark mass, we remarkably find that the critical end point at nonzero temperature and baryon chemical potential is split in two by an arbitrarily small isospin chemical potential. As a consequence, there are two crossovers that separate the hadronic phase from the quark-gluon plasma phase at high temperature. Detailed analytical results are obtained at zero temperature and in the chiral limit.

Discovery of radio pulsations from the X-ray pulsar J0205+6449 in supernova remnant 3C58 with the Green Bank Telescope

We report the discovery with the 100 m Green Bank Telescope of 65 ms radio pulsations from the X-ray pulsar J0205+6449 at the center of supernova remnant 3C58, making this possibly the youngest radio pulsar known. From our observations at frequencies of 820 and 1375 MHz, the free electron column density to PSR J0205+6449 is found to be 140.7 +- 0.3 pc/cc. The barycentric pulsar period P and period derivative determined from a phase-coherent timing solution are consistent with the values previously measured from X-ray observations. The averaged radio profile of PSR J0205+6449 consists of one sharp pulse of width ~ 3 ms ~ 0.05 P. The pulsar is an exceedingly weak radio source, with pulse-averaged flux density in the 1400 MHz band of 0.045 mJy and a spectral index of ~ -2.1. Its radio luminosity of ~ 0.5 mJy kpc^2 at 1400 MHz is lower than that of ~ 99% of known pulsars and is the lowest among known young pulsars.

Spectral Universality of Real Chiral Random Matrix Ensembles

We investigate the universality of microscopic eigenvalue correlations for Random Matrix Theories with the global symmetries of the QCD partition function. In this article we analyze the case of real valued chiral Random Matrix Theories ($β=1$) by relating the kernel of the correlations functions for $β=1$ to the kernel of chiral Random Matrix Theories with complex matrix elements ($β= 2$), which is already known to be universal. Our proof is based on a novel asymptotic property of the skew-orthogonal polynomials: an integral over the corresponding wavefunctions oscillates about half its asymptotic value in the region of the bulk of the zeros. This result solves the puzzle that microscopic universality persists in spite of contributions to the microscopic correlators from the region near the largest zero of the skew-orthogonal polynomials. Our analytical results are illustrated by the numerical construction of the skew-orthogonal polynomials for an $x^4$ probability potential.

The Effelsberg Search for Pulsars in the Galactic Centre

We report the status of a search for pulsars in the Galactic Centre, using a completely revised and improved high-sensitivity double-horn system at 4.85-GHz. We also present calculations about the success rate of periodicity searches for such a survey, showing that in contrast to conclusions in recent literature pulsars can be indeed detected at the chosen search frequency.
