Magnetic properties of a quasi-two-dimensional spin-1/2 antiferromagnet Y2CuGe4O12

Competing magnetic interactions and frustration-induced quantum fluctuations in spatially anisotropic low-dimensional magnets often give rise to exotic magnetic phenomena, including field-induced phases. Here, we present crystal structure, magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, and electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements on polycrystalline Y$2$CuGe$4$O${12}$, supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. In this compound, the Cu$^{2+}$ ions form a distorted triangular lattice with competing intraplanar ferromagnetic ($J_1 \approx 0.138$ K and $J_2 \approx 0.01$ K) and antiferromagnetic ($J_3 \approx -3.22$ K) exchange interactions, together with a weaker interplanar antiferromagnetic coupling ($J_4 \approx -1.56$ K). These interactions account for the small Curie--Weiss temperature, $\theta{\rm CW}=-1.8$ K. Despite the dominant antiferromagnetic interactions, no signature of long-range magnetic ordering is observed down to 0.4 K. Instead, broad maxima in both the magnetic susceptibility and magnetic specific heat reveal the development of short-range spin correlations, further supported by the critical ESR linewidth broadening characteristic of low-dimensional frustrated magnets. Application of an external magnetic field progressively suppresses the broad maximum in the magnetic specific heat, reflecting competition between the Zeeman and exchange energy scales, and drives the system into a field-polarized state above the saturation field, $\mu_0H_{\rm s}=2.6$ T. In this regime, the magnetic specific heat exhibits an exponential temperature dependence, consistent with gapped magnon excitations. These results establish Y$_2$CuGe$4$O${12}$ as a rare distorted triangular-lattice magnet in which further-neighbor exchange interactions dominate the magnetic behavior, providing a promising platform for exploring frustration-driven quantum phenomena.

Quasi-Two-Dimensional Quantum Antiferromagnetism in the Distorted Honeycomb Compound KCuIn(PO4)2

We investigate the electronic structure and magnetic properties of the distorted honeycomb lattice compound KCuInP2O8 through a combination of experimental measurements, first principles calculations and quantum monte carlo simulations. Density functional theory calculations within the GGA+U framework establishes KCuInP2O8 as an indirect gap insulator with Cu2+ local moments and finite magnetocrystalline anisotropy arising from spin orbit coupling. A microscopic evaluation of magnetic exchange interactions using the magnetic force theorem reveals a pronounced hierarchy of couplings, with the next nearest neighbor interaction dominating over the nearest neighbor exchange, while interlayer couplings remain negligible. This exchange hierarchy naturally maps the system onto weakly coupled antiferromagnetic spin chains embedded in a distorted honeycomb lattice. Motivated by the ab initio estimated exchange interactions, we construct an effective spin half Hamiltonian and investigate its magnetic response using large scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The calculated temperature dependent susceptibility and field dependent magnetization quantitatively reproduce the experimental behavior and capture key signatures of low dimensional quantum magnetism, including a broad susceptibility maximum and a field induced saturation at low temperatures. Our results establish KCuInP2O8 as a quasi-two-dimensional quantum antiferromagnet composed of coupled spin chains, providing a consistent theoretical framework that links electronic structure, exchange interactions, and collective magnetic behavior.

Quantum spin liquid on a 3D bipartite lattice of spin trimers stabilized by enhanced effective anisotropy

Quantum spin liquids (QSLs) represent highly entangled states of matter in which frustration-induced quantum fluctuations suppress any symmetry-breaking phase transition down to absolute zero, giving rise to fractionalized excitations and emergent gauge fields. Theoretically, bond anisotropy can stabilize QSLs even on bipartite lattices, as exemplified by the Kitaev honeycomb model; however, no material has so far been established to realize such a state as its true ground state. Here we identify the three-dimensional spin-trimer magnet KBa$_3$Ca$_4$Cu$_3$V$_7$O$_{28}$ as a promising candidate for a bipartite quantum spin liquid persisting to the lowest temperatures. Strongly coupled Cu$^{2+}$ trimers form effective pseudospin-1/2 degrees of freedom upon cooling, which in turn constitute a three-dimensional bipartite network. Bulk thermodynamic measurements, neutron scattering, $\mu$SR, and NMR detect no spin freezing or symmetry-breaking phase transition down to 20 mK, but instead reveal a gapless dynamical ground state with algebraic spin autocorrelations. Complementary Monte Carlo and exact-diagonalization calculations show that this state is stabilized by a strong enhancement of effective anisotropy: a weak microscopic Cu-Cu exchange anisotropy of approximately 15 percent is generically amplified at the trimer level, producing effective pseudospin-pseudospin interaction anisotropies of 60 to 100 percent. Our results establish trimer-based networks as a promising platform for realizing anisotropy-stabilized quantum entangled states, even in three-dimensional bipartite systems with only weak microscopic anisotropy.

Observation of linear magnetoelectric effect in a Dirac magnon antiferromagnet Cu$_3$TeO$_6$

Cu$_3$TeO$_6$, a three-dimensional antiferromagnet forming a unique spin-web lattice of spin-1/2 Cu2+ ions below the Neel temperature T$_N$ = 62 K, has recently been found to exhibit topological Dirac or nodal magnon dispersion. In this study, we report the discovery of the linear magnetoelectric (ME) effects in Cu$_3$TeO$_6$ below TN. Our pyroelectric current measurements at a constant magnetic field (H) reveal a linear increase of electric polarization (P) with H for both P // H and P $\perp$ H configurations; a maximum P // [110] = 20 $μ$C/m$^2$ is obtained at u0H // [1-10] = 14 T, corresponding to a linear ME coefficient 1.8 ps/m. Magnetic point group analysis and Monte-Carlo simulations confirm that finite linear ME coefficients are allowed in the off-diagonal and diagonal ME tensor components, consistent with the magnetic point group of $\bar{3}'$. As the parity-time symmetry can be broken in the presence of H or electric field E in the linear ME materials, we envisage that Cu$_3$TeO$_6$ should exhibit a H- or E-induced transformation in the topological magnon dispersion from a Dirac point/nodal line type into two Weyl point types.

The $S=1$ dimer system K$_2$Ni(MoO$_4$)$_2$: a candidate for magnon Bose-Einstein condensation

Dimerized quantum magnets provide a unique possibility to investigate Bose-Einstein condensation of magnetic excitations in crystalline systems at low temperature. Here, we model the low-temperature magnetic properties of the recently synthesized spin $S=1$ dimer system K${}_2$Ni(MoO${}_4$)$_2$ and propose it as a new candidate material for triplon and quintuplon condensation. Based on a first principles analysis of its electronic structure, we derive an effective spin-dimer model that we first solve within a mean-field approximation to refine its parameters in comparison to experiment. Finally, the model is solved by employing a numerically exact quantum Monte Carlo technique which leads to magnetic properties in good agreement with experimental magnetization and thermodynamic results. We discuss the emergent spin model of K${}_2$Ni(MoO${}_4$)$_2$ in view of condensation of magnetic excitations in a broad parameter regime. Finally, we comment on a geometrical peculiarity of the proposed model and discuss how it could host a supersolid phase upon structural distortions.

Magnetic properties of S = 5/2 anisotropic triangular chain Bi3FeMo2O12

Competing magnetic interactions in low-dimensional quantum magnets can lead to the exotic ground state with fractionalized excitations. Herein, we present our results on an S = 5/2 quasi-one-dimensional spin system Bi3FeMo2O12. The structure of Bi3FeMo2O12 consists of very well separated, infinite zig-zag S = 5/2 spin chains. The observation of a broad maximum around 10 K in the magnetic susceptibility suggests the presence of short-range spin correlations. Magnetic susceptibility data do not fit to S=5/2 uniform spin chain model due to the presence of 2nd nearest-neighbor coupling (J2) along with the 1st nearest-neighbor coupling J1 of the zig-zag chain. The electronic structure calculations infer that the value of J1 is comparable with J2 (J2/J1~1.1) with a negligible inter-chain interaction (J'/J ~ 0.01), implying that Bi3FeMo2O12 is a highly frustrated triangular chain system. The absence of magnetic long-range ordering down to 0.2 K is seen in the heat capacity data, despite a relatively large antiferromagnetic Curie-Weiss temperature of -40 K. The magnetic heat capacity follows nearly a linear behavior at low temperatures indicating that the S = 5/2 anisotropic triangular chain exhibits the gapless excitations.

Classical Spin Liquid State in the $S=\frac{5}{2}$ Heisenberg Kagomé Antiferromagnet Li$_9$Fe$_3$(P$_2$O$_7$)$_3$(PO$_4$)$_2$

We investigate the low temperature magnetic properties of a $S=\frac{5}{2}$ Heisenberg kagomé antiferromagnet, the layered monodiphosphate Li$_9$Fe$_3$(P$_2$O$_7$)$_3$(PO$_4$)$_2$, using magnetization measurements and $^{31}$P nuclear magnetic resonance. An antiferromagnetic-type order sets in at $T_{\rm N}=1.3$ K and a characteristic magnetization plateau is observed at 1/3 of the saturation magnetization below $T^* \sim 5$ K. A moderate $^{31}$P NMR line broadening reveals the development of anisotropic short-range correlations within the plateau phase concomitantly with a gapless spin-lattice relaxation time $T_1 \sim k_B T / \hbar S$, which both point to the presence of a semiclassical nematic spin liquid state predicted for the Heisenberg kagomé antiferromagnetic model or to the persistence of the zero-energy modes of the kagome lattice under large magnetic fields.

Large spontaneous exchange bias in a weak ferromagnet Pb6Ni9(TeO6)5

We report the magnetic and dielectric behavior of Pb6Ni9(TeO6)5, a new compound comprising the honeycomb-like layers of S=1 spins, through detailed structural, magnetic and dielectric investigation. An antiferromagnetic-type transition at 25 K (TN) with weak-ferromagnetic behavior is revealed. Interestingly, a large value of coercive field of 1.32 T at 2 K is observed. The isothermal magnetization after zero-field-cooled condition, it exhibits the presence of large spontaneous exchange bias (SEB) with a magnitude of 0.19 T at 2 K; which is rare in single bulk materials, especially without external doping. The value of |HEB| further enhances to 0.24 T under 16 T field-cooled condition, confirming the presence of large exchange bias in the material. In addition, the dielectric constant shows an anomaly at the onset of TN, indicating the presence of magnetodielectric coupling.

Synthesis and magnetic properties of a quantum magnet PbCuTeO5

We report the structural and magnetic properties of a quantum magnet PbCuTeO5. The triclinic structure of PbCuTeO5 comprises of alternating layers (ab-planes), in which one layer is composed of S = 1/2 dimer chains and another layer is composed of S = 1/2 trimer chains formed by corner-shared CuO4 units. Magnetic susceptibility data show a Curie-Weiss behavior with an antiferromagnetic Curie-Weiss temperature (Theta_CW) of -165 K. At low temperature, both the heat capacity Cp(T) and susceptibility data show an anomaly at Tc = 6 K with a weak ferromagnetic (WFM) moment suggesting the appearance of long-range order. The magnetization vs. field M(H) data at 2 K also provide evidence for WFM behavior. Magnetic frustration with a frustration parameter f = Theta_CW/Tc of about 27 is observed. Magnetic specific heat data suggest the presence of a large entropy in the paramagnetic region, well above Tc, suggesting the presence of short-range spin correlations. The observed results might originate from the frustrated network of S = 1/2 distorted checkerboard lattice formed due to the coupling of the spin chains via TeO6 octahedral units in the ab-plane.

Synthesis, magnetic properties and electronic structure of S = 1/2 uniform spin chain system InCuPO5

We have studied the structural, magnetic properties, and electronic structure of the compound InCuPO5 synthesized by solid state reaction method. The structure of InCuPO5 comprises of S = 1/2 uniform spin chains formed by corner-shared CuO4 units. Magnetic susceptibility chi(T) data shows a broad maximum at about 65 K, a characteristic feature of one-dimensional (1D) magnetism. The chi(T) data is fitted to the coupled, S = 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic (HAFM) uniform chain model that gives the intra-chain coupling (J/kB) between nearest neighbour Cu2+ ions as -100 K and the ratio of inter-chain to intra-chain coupling (J'/J) as about 0.07. The exchange couplings estimated from the magnetic data analysis are in good agreement with the computed values from the electronic structure calculations based on density functional theory + Hubbard U (DFT+U) approach. The combination of theoretical and experimental analysis confirms that InCuPO5 is a candidate material for weakly coupled S = 1/2 uniform chains. A detailed theoretical analysis of the electronic structure further reveals that the system is insulating with a gap of 2.4 eV and a local moment of 0.70 muB /Cu.

Bose-Einstein condensation of triplons in the S=1 tetramer antiferromagnet K2Ni2(MoO4)3: A compound close to quantum critical point

The structure of K2Ni2(MoO4)3 consists of S=1 tetramers formed by Ni^{2+} ions. The magnetic susceptibility chi(T) and specific heat Cp(T) data on a single crystal show a broad maximum due to the low-dimensionality of the system with short-range spin correlations. A sharp peak is seen in chi(T) and Cp(T) at about 1.13 K, well below the broad maximum. This is an indication of magnetic long-range order i.e., the absence of spin-gap in the ground state. Interestingly, the application of a small magnetic field (H>0.1 T) induces magnetic behavior akin to Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of triplon excitations observed in some spin-gap materials. Our results demonstrate that the temperature-field (T-H) phase boundary follows a power-law (T-T_{N})propotional to H^(1/alpha) with the exponent 1/alpha close to 2/3, as predicted for BEC scenario. The observation of BEC of triplon excitations in small H infers that K2Ni2(MoO4)3 is located in the proximity of a quantum critical point, which separates the magnetically ordered and spin-gap regions of the phase diagram.

Observation of magnetoelectric effects in a S=1/2 frustrated spin chain magnet SrCuTe2O6

The magnetoelectric (ME) effects are investigated in a cubic compound SrCuTe2O6, in which uniform Cu2+ (S=1/2) spin chains with considerable spin frustration exhibit a concomitant antiferromagnetic transition and dielectric constant peak at TN=5.5 K. Pyroelectric Jp(T) and magnetoelectric current JME(H) measurements in the presence of a bias electric field are used to reveal that SrCuTe2O6 shows clear variations of Jp(T) across TN at constant magnetic fields. Furthermore, isothermal measurements of JME(H) also develop clear peaks at finite magnetic fields, of which traces are consistent with the spin-flop transitions observed in the magnetization studies. As a result, the anomalies observed in Jp(T) and JME(H) curves well match with the field-temperature phase diagram constructed from magnetization and dielectric constant measurements, demonstrating that SrCuTe2O6 is a new magnetoelectric compound with S=1/2 spin chains.

Spin Liquid State in the 3D Frustrated Antiferromagnet PbCuTe2O6: NMR and muSR Studies

PbCuTe2O6 is a rare example of a spin liquid candidate featuring a three dimensional magnetic lattice. Strong geometric frustration arises from the dominant antiferromagnetic interaction which generates a hyperkagome network of Cu2+ ions although additional interactions enhance the magnetic lattice connectivity. Through a combination of magnetization measurements and local probe investigation by NMR and muSR down to 20 mK, we provide a robust evidence for the absence of magnetic freezing in the ground state. The local spin susceptibility probed by the NMR shift hardly deviates from the macroscopic one down to 1 K pointing to a homogeneous magnetic system with a low defect concentration. The saturation of the NMR shift and the sublinear power law temperature (T) evolution of the 1/T1 NMR relaxation rate at low T point to a non-singlet ground state favoring a gapless fermionic description of the magnetic excitations. Below 1 K a pronounced slowing down of the spin dynamics is witnessed, which may signal a reconstruction of spinon Fermi surface. Nonetheless, the compound remains in a fluctuating spin liquid state down to the lowest temperature of the present investigation.

Sc_{2}Ga_{2}CuO_{7}: A possible Quantum spin liquid near the percolation threshold

Sc$_{2}$Ga$_{2}$CuO$_{7}$ (SGCO) crystallizes in a hexagonal structure (space group: $P$$6$$_{3}/mmc$),\textcolor{black}{{} which can be seen as an alternating stacking of single and double triangular layers. Combining neutron, x-ray, and resonant x-ray diffraction we establish that the single triangular layers are mainly populated by non-magnetic Ga$^{3+}$ ions (85\% Ga and 15\% Cu), while the bi-layers have comparable population of Cu$^{2+}$ and Ga$^{3+}$} ions \textcolor{black}{(43\% Cu and 57\% Ga)}. Our susceptibility measurements in the temperature range 1.8 - 400 K give no indication of any spin-freezing or magnetic long-range order (LRO). We infer an effective paramagnetic moment $μ_{eff}=1.79\pm0.09$ $μ_{B}$ and a Curie-Weiss temperature $θ_{CW}$ of about $-44$ K, suggesting antiferromagnetic interactions between the Cu$^{2+}$($S=1/2$) ions. Low-temperature neutron powder diffraction data showed no evidence for LRO down to 1.5 K. In our specific heat data as well, no anomalies were found down to 0.35 K, in the field range 0-140 kOe.\textcolor{black}{{} The magnetic specific heat, $C_{m}$, exhibits a broad maximum at around 2.5 K followed by a nearly power law $C$$_{m}$$\propto$ $T$$^α$ behavior at lower temperatures, with $α$ increasing from }0.3\textcolor{black}{{} to} 1.9\textcolor{black}{{} as a function of field for fields upto 90 kOe and then remaining at 1.9 for fields upto 140 kOe. Our results point to a disordered ground state in SGCO. }

Observation of S = 1/2 quasi-one-dimensional magnetic and magneto-dielectric behavior in a cubic SrCuTe2O6

We investigate magnetic, thermal, and dielectric properties of SrCuTe2O6, which is isostructural to PbCuTe2O6, a recently found, Cu-based 3D frustrated magnet with a corner sharing triangular spin network having dominant first and second nearest neighbor (nn) couplings [B. Koteswararao, et al. Phys. Rev. B 90, 035141 (2014)]. Although SrCuTe2O6 has a structurally similar spin network, but the magnetic data exhibit the characteristic features of a typical quasi -one-dimensional magnet, which mainly resulted from the magnetically dominant third nn coupling, uniform chains. The magnetic properties of this system are studied via magnetization (M), heat capacity (Cp), dielectric constant, measurements along with ab-initio band structure calculations. Magnetic susceptibility chi(T) data show a broad maximum at 32 K and the system orders at low temperatures TN1=5.5 K and TN2=4.5 K, respectively. The analysis of chi(T) data gives an intra-chain coupling, J3/kB, to be about - 42 K with non-negligible frustrated inter-chain couplings (J1/kB and J2/kB). The hopping parameters obtained from LDA band structure calculations also suggest the presence of coupled uniform chains. The observation of simultaneous anomalies in dielectric constant at TN1 and TN2 suggests the presence of magneto-dielectric effect in SrCuTe2O6. A magnetic phase diagram is also built based on M, C p, and dielectric constant results.

Spin dynamics and disorder effects in the S=1/2 kagome Heisenberg spin liquid phase of kapellasite

We report $^{35}$Cl NMR, ESR, $μ$SR and specific heat measurements on the $S=1/2$ frustrated kagomé magnet kapellasite, $α-$Cu$_3$Zn(OH)$_6$Cl$_2$, where a gapless spin liquid phase is stabilized by a set of competing exchange interactions. Our measurements confirm the ferromagnetic character of the nearest-neighbour exchange interaction $J_1$ and give an energy scale for the competing interactions $|J| \sim 10$ K. The study of the temperature-dependent ESR lineshift reveals a moderate symmetric exchange anisotropy term $D$, with $|D/J|\sim 3$%. These findings validate a posteriori the use of the $J_1 - J_2 - J_d$ Heisenberg model to describe the magnetic properties of kapellasite [Bernu et al., Phys. Rev. B 87, 155107 (2013)]. We further confirm that the main deviation from this model is the severe random depletion of the magnetic kagomé lattice by 27%, due to Cu/Zn site mixing, and specifically address the effect of this disorder by $^{35}$Cl NMR, performed on an oriented polycrystalline sample. Surprisingly, while being very sensitive to local structural deformations, our NMR measurements demonstrate that the system remains homogeneous with a unique spin susceptibility at high temperature, despite a variety of magnetic environments. Unconventional spin dynamics is further revealed by NMR and $μ$SR in the low-$T$, correlated, spin liquid regime, where a broad distribution of spin-lattice relaxation times is observed. We ascribe this to the presence of local low-energy modes.

Diluted magnetism in Mn doped SrZnO2 single crystals

We have investigated the magnetic properties of Mn and Cu substituted SrZnO2 single crystals (SrZn0.99Mn0.01O2 and SrZn0.99Cu0.01O2). We observed signatures of weak ferromagnetism as a sharp increase of magnetic susceptibility below 5 K even in the low percentage (x= 0.01) of Mn substituted single crystals. Magnetic susceptibility data measured parallel or perpendicular to the ab plane yield anisotropic behavior with Curie Weiss temperature of about -320 K and -410 K, respectively, suggesting the presence of strong antiferromagnetic couplings among Mn atoms at high temperatures, similar to the Mn doped ZnO and Fe doped BaTiO3 samples. In contrast, the SrZn0.99Cu0.01O2 crystal shows paramagnetic behavior down to 2 K.

Magnetic properties and heat capacity of the three-dimensional frustrated S=1/2 antiferromagnet PbCuTe2O6

We report magnetic susceptibility (chi) and heat capacity Cp measurements along with ab-initio electronic structure calculations on PbCuTe2O6, a compound made up of a three dimensional 3D network of corner-shared triangular units. The presence of antiferromagnetic interactions is inferred from a Curie-Weiss temperature (theta_CW) of about -22 K from the chi(T) data. The magnetic heat capacity (Cm) data show a broad maximum at T^max ~ 1.15 K (i.e. T^max/theta_CW ~ 0.05), which is analogous to the the observed broad maximum in the Cm/T data of a hyper-Kagome system, Na4Ir3O8. In addition, Cm data exhibit a weak kink at T^* ~ 0.87 K. While the T^max is nearly unchanged, the T^* is systematically suppressed in an increasing magnetic field (H) up to 80 kOe. For H > 80 kOe, the Cm data at low temperatures exhibit a characteristic power-law (T^α) behavior with an exponent α slightly less than 2. Hopping integrals obtained from the electronic structure calculations show the presence of strongly frustrated 3D spin interactions along with non-negligible unfrustrated couplings. Our results suggest that PbCuTe2O6 is a candidate material for realizing a 3D quantum spin liquid state at high magnetic fields.
