In-Medium Properties of Hadrons

A diverse experimental program for the study of the photoproduction of mesons off nuclei has been carried out - and is still running - at the Mainz MAMI and Bonn ELSA electron accelerators with the TAPS, Crystal Barrel, and Crystal Ball calorimeters. It is motivated as a detailed study of the in-medium properties of hadrons and the meson - nucleus interactions. Typical examples for the in-medium behavior of vector mesons ($ω$), scalar mesons ($σ$), and nucleon resonances (P$_{33}$(1232), S$_{11}$(1535), D$_{15}$(1520)) are discussed. Special attention is paid to meson - nucleus final state interactions.

Vector and Tensor Analyzing Powers of the H(d,gamma)He-3 capture reaction

Precise measurements of the deuteron vector analyzing power Ayd and the tensor analyzing power Ayy of the H(d,gamma)He-3 capture reaction have been performed at deuteron energies of 29MeV and 45MeV. The data have been compared to theoretical state-of-the-art calculations available today. Due to the large sensitivity of polarization observables and the precision of the data light could be shed on small effects present in the dynamics of the reaction.

Nuclear mass form factors from coherent photoproduction of $π^0$ mesons

Data for coherent photoproduction of $π^0$ mesons from nuclei ($^{12}$C, $^{40}$Ca, $^{93}$Nb, $^{nat}$Pb), recently measured with the TAPS detector at the Mainz MAMI accelerator, have been analyzed in view of the mass form factors of the nuclei. The form factors have been extracted in plane wave approximation of the $A(γ,π^0)A$ reaction and corrected for final state interaction effects with the help of distorted wave impulse approximations. Nuclear mass rms-radii have been calculated from the slope of the form factors for $q^2\to 0$. Furthermore, the Helm model (hard sphere form factor folded with Gaussian) was used to extract diffraction radii from the zeroes of the form factor and skin thicknesses from the position and height of its first maximum. The diffraction radii from the Helm model agree with the corresponding charge radii obtained from electron scattering experiments within their uncertainties of a few per cent. The rms-radii from the slope of the form factors are systematically lower by up to 5% for PWIA and up to 10% for DWIA. Also the skin thicknesses extracted from the Helm model are systematically smaller than their charge counter parts.

Measurement of the asymmetries in 3He(e,e'p)d and 3He(e,e'p)np

The electron-target-asymmetries A_parallel and A_perpendicular with target spin parallel and perpendicular to the momentum transfer q were measured for both the two-- and three-body breakup of 3He in the 3He(e,e'p)-reaction. Polarized electrons were scattered off polarized 3He in the quasielastic regime in parallel kinematics with the scattered electron and the knocked-out proton detected using the Three-Spectrometer-Facility at MAMI. The results are compared to Faddeev calculations which take into account Final State Interactions as well as Meson Exchange Currents. The experiment confirms the prediction of a large effect of Final State Interactions in the asymmetry of the three-body breakup and of an almost negligible one for the two-body breakup.

Measurement of the pi^+ meson polarizabilities via the gamma p->gamma pi^+ n reaction

An experiment on the radiative pi^+ meson photoproduction from the proton (gamma p->gamma pi^+ n) was carried out at the Mainz Microtron MAMI in the kinematic region 537 MeV <E_{gamma}<817 MeV, 140^o<theta_{gamma-gamma'}^cm<180^o. The pi^+ meson polarizabilities have been determined from a comparison of the data with the predictions of two different theoretical models, the first one being based on an effective pole model with pseudoscalar coupling while the second one is based on diagrams describing both resonant and nonresonant contributions. The validity of the models has been verified by comparing the predictions with the present experimental data in the kinematic region where the pion polarizability contribution is negligible (s_1<5 mu^2) and where the difference between the predictions of the two models does not exceed 3%. In the region, where the pion polarizability contribution is substantial (5<s_1/mu^2<15, -12<t/mu^2<-2), the difference (alpha-beta)_{pi^+} of the electric (alpha) and the magnetic (beta) polarizabilities has been determined. As a result we find: (alpha-beta)_{pi^+}=(11.6\pm 1.5_{stat}\pm 3.0_{syst}\pm 0.5_{mod})x10^-4fm^3. This result is at variance with recent calculations in the framework of chiral perturbation theory.

In-medium properties of nucleon resonances

Recent experimental results for the in-medium properties of nucleon resonances are discussed. The experiments were done with the TAPS detector at the tagged photon beam of the MAMI accelerator in Mainz. Measured was the photoproduction of mesons (final states $π^o X$, $ηX$, $2π^oX$ and $π^oπ^{\pm}X$) from the nuclei $^{12}$C, $^{40}$Ca, $^{93}$Nb, and $^{208}$Pb up to the second resonance region. The results were analyzed in view of the in-medium properties of the P$_{33}$(1232), the D$_{13}$(1520), and the S$_{11}$(1535) resonances.

Photoproduction of mesons from nuclei - In-medium properties of hadrons

Recent experimental results for the in-medium properties of hadrons obtained with photoproduction of mesons from nuclei are discussed. The experiments were done with the TAPS detector at the tagged photon beam of the MAMI accelerator in Mainz. Measured were the final states $π^o X$, $ηX$, $2π^oX$, and $π^oπ^{\pm}X$ for $^{12}$C, $^{40}$Ca, $^{93}$Nb, and $^{208}$Pb up to the second resonance region. The results were used for an investigation of the in-medium properties of the P$_{33}$(1232), the P$_{11}$(1440), the D$_{13}$(1520), and the S$_{11}$(1535) resonances. It was found that the cross sections can be spilt into a component which originates from the low density surface region of the nuclei and a component which scales like the nuclear volume. The energy dependence of the surface component is strikingly similar to the deuteron, it shows a clear signal for the second resonance peak. The volume component is lacking this peak and shows an enhancement at intermediate energies. Furthermore the measurement of coherent $η$-photoproduction and the final state $pπ^o$ from $^3$He is discussed in the context of the search for $η$-mesic nuclei.

Surface and volume effects in the photoabsorption of nuclei

Recent experimental results for meson photoproduction from nuclei obtained with TAPS at MAMI are analyzed in view of the suppression of the second nucleon resonance region in total photoabsorption. The cross sections can be split into a component from the low density surface region of nuclei and a component which scales more like the nuclear volume. The energy dependence of the surface component is similar to the deuteron cross section, it shows a clear signal for the second resonance peak assigned to the excitation of the P11(1440), D13(1520), and S11(1535). The volume component behaves differently, it is lacking the second resonance peak and shows an enhancement at intermediate photon energies.

Photoproduction of eta-mesic 3He

The photoproduction of eta-mesic 3He has been investigated using the TAPS calorimeter at the Mainz Microtron accelerator facility MAMI. The total inclusive cross section for the reaction gamma+3He->eta+X has been measured for photon energies from threshold to 820 MeV. The total and angular differential coherent eta cross sections have been extracted up to energies of 745 MeV. A resonance-like structure just above the eta production threshold with an isotropic angular distribution suggests the existence of a resonant quasi-bound state. This is supported by studies of a competing decay channel of such a quasi-bound eta-mesic nucleus into pi^0+p+X. A binding energy of (-4.4+-4.2) MeV and a width of (25.6+-6.1) MeV is deduced for the quasi-bound eta-mesic state in 3He.

Photoproduction of pi0-mesons from nuclei

Photoproduction of neutral pions from nuclei (carbon, calcium, niobium, lead) has been studied for incident photon energies from 200 MeV to 800 MeV with the TAPS detector using the Glasgow photon tagging spectrometer at the Mainz MAMI accelerator. Data were obtained for the inclusive photoproduction of neutral pions and the partial channels of quasifree single pi0, double pi0, and pi0pi+/- photoproduction. They have been analyzed in terms of the in-medium behavior of nucleon resonances and the pion - nucleus interaction. They are compared to earlier measurements from the deuteron and to the predictions of a Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (BUU) transport model for photon induced pion production from nuclei.

Double $π^0$ Photoproduction off the Proton at Threshold

The reaction $γp \to π^0 π^0 p$ has been measured using the TAPS BaF$_2$ calorimeter at the tagged photon facility of the Mainz Microtron accelerator. Chiral perturbation theory (ChPT) predicts that close to threshold this channel is significantly enhanced compared to double pion final states with charged pions. In contrast to other reaction channels, the lower order tree terms are strongly suppressed in 2$π^0$ photoproduction. The consequence is the dominance of pion loops in the 2$π^0$ channel close to threshold - a result that opens new prospects for the test of ChPT and in particular its inherent loop terms. The present measurement is the first which is sensitive enough for a conclusive comparison with the ChPT calculation and is in agreement with its prediction. The data also show good agreement with a calculation in the unitary chiral approach.

Study of Non-Strange Baryon Resonances with Meson Photoproduction

Photoproduction of mesons is an excellent tool for the study of nucleon resonances. Complementary to pion induced reactions, photoproduction on the free proton contributes to the determination of the basic properties of nucleon resonances like excitation energy, decay widths, spin, and the coupling to the photon. Photoproduction from light nuclei, in particular from the deuteron, reveals the isospin structure of the electromagnetic excitation of the nucleon. During the last few years, progress in this field has been substantial. New accelerator facilities combined with state-of-the-art detector technologies have pushed the experiments to unprecedented sensitivity and precision. The experimental progress has been accompanied by new developments for the reaction models, necessary to extract the properties of the nucleon states, and for modern hadron models which try to connect these properties to QCD. The emphasis of this review lies on the experimental side and focuses on experiments aiming at precise studies of the low-lying nucleon resonances.

Threshold enhancement in eta photoproduction from 2H and 4He

The photoproduction of eta-mesons from 2H and 4He has been studied for energies close to the production thresholds. The experiments were carried out with the tagged photon beam of the Mainz MAMI accelerator. The eta-mesons were detected via their two photon decays with the electromagnetic calorimeter TAPS. Total cross sections, angular and momentum distributions of the eta-mesons have been determined for both reactions. The total cross sections in the threshold region show a large enhancement over the predictions of a participant - spectator model, indicating significant final state interaction effects. The results are compared to recent model calculations taking into account nucleon-nucleon and nucleon-eta final state interaction effects on different levels of sophistication.

Photoexcitation of Baryon Resonances - News from the D13(1520)

The so-called second resonance region of the nucleon comprises the states P11(1440), D13(1520) and S11(1535). During the last few years photoproduction experiments have largely contributed to a better understanding of these states, but the strong suppression of the resonance structure in total photoabsorption experiments from nuclei is still not understood. The D13-resonance dominates the resonance structure due to its large photon coupling. In this contribution new results for the excitation and decay modes of the D13 on the free nucleon and first results for the in-medium behavior of the resonance are summarised.

Meson photoproduction in the first and second resonance region

The study of baryon resonances via meson photoproduction reactions on the free proton and on nucleons in the nuclear medium is discussed. Special emphasis is laid on the production of neutral mesons which due to the suppression of non-resonant backgrounds are particularly well suited for the study of excited states of the nucleon. Experiments carried out during the last ten years with the TAPS-detector at the Mainz Microtron (MAMI) have very significantly contributed to a detailed investigation of the low lying nucleon resonances P33(1232), D13(1520) and S11(1535). The most recent results from single and double pion production and from eta-photoproduction are summarised.

Exclusive measurement of coherent eta photoproduction from the deuteron

Coherent photoproduction of eta mesons from the deuteron has been measured from threshold up to incident photon energies of 750 MeV using the photon spectrometer TAPS at the tagged photon facility at the Mainz microtron MAMI. For the first time, differential coherent cross sections have been deduced from the coincident detection of the eta meson and the recoil deuteron. A missing energy analysis was used for the suppression of background events so that a very clean identification of coherent eta-photoproduction was achieved. The resulting cross sections agree with previous experimental results except for angles around 90 deg in the photon-deuteron cm-system where they are smaller. They are compared to various model calculations.

Coherent pi0-photoproduction from atomic nuclei

Differential and total cross sections for coherent pi0-photoproduction from 12C, 40Ca, 93Nb and Pb targets have been measured throughout the region of the Delta(1232)-resonance. The experiments were performed with the TAPS-detector at the Mainz accelerator MAMI. The characteristic proportionality of the cross section to the square of the atomic mass number and to the nuclear mass form factor is clearly demonstrated. The data allow for the first time detailed tests of model predictions for this reaction. The comparison of the data to model predictions shows that the Delta-nucleus interaction saturates: it is described for heavy nuclei with the same potential parameters as for 4He.
