Andreev bound states in ferromagnet-superconductor nanostructures

We discuss the properties of a ferromagnet - superconductor heterostructure on the basis of a Hubbard model featuring exchange splitting in the ferromagnet and electron - electron attraction in the superconductor. We have solved the spin - polarized Hartree - Fock - Gorkov equations together with the Maxwell's equation (Ampere's law) fully self-consistently. We have found that a Proximity Effect - Fulde - Ferrell - Larkin - Ovchinnikov state is realized in such a heterostructure. It manifests itself in an oscillatory behavior of the pairing amplitude in the ferromagnet and spontaneously generated spin polarized current in the ground state. We argue that it is built up from the Andreev bound states, whose energy can be tuned by the exchange splitting and hence can coincide with the Fermi energy giving rise to a current carrying $π$-state. We also suggest experiments to verify these predictions.

Competition between disorder and exchange splitting in superconducting ZrZn_2

We propose a simple picture for the occurrence of superconductivity and the pressure dependence of the superconducting critical temperature, T_{SC}, in ZrZn_2. According to our hypothesis the pairing potential is independent of pressure, but the exchange splitting, E_{xc}, leads to a pressure dependence in the (spin dependent) density of states at the Fermi level, D_σ(ε_F). Assuming p-wave pairing T_{SC} is dependent on D_σ(ε_F) which ensures that, in the absence of non-magnetic impurities, T_{SC} decreases as pressure is applied until it reaches a minimum in the paramagnetic state. Disorder reduces this minimum to zero, this gives the illusion that the superconductivity disappears at the same pressure as ferromagnetism does.

The Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker Non-Local Coherent Potential Approximation (KKR-NLCPA)

We introduce the Korringa-Kohn-Rostocker non-local coherent potential approximation (KKR-NLCPA) for describing the electronic structure of disordered systems. The KKR-NLCPA systematically provides a hierarchy of improvements upon the widely used KKR-CPA approach and includes non-local correlations in the disorder configurations by means of a self-consistently embedded cluster. The KKR-NLCPA method satisfies all of the requirements for a successful cluster generalization of the KKR-CPA; it remains fully causal, becomes exact in the limit of large cluster sizes, reduces to the KKR-CPA for a single-site cluster, is straightforward to implement numerically, and enables the effects of short-range order upon the electronic structure to be investigated. In particular, it is suitable for combination with electronic density functional theory to give an ab-initio description of disordered systems. Future applications to charge correlation and lattice displacement effects in alloys and spin fluctuations in magnets amongst others are very promising. We illustrate the method by application to a simple one-dimensional model.

Spin triplet superconductivity in Sr2RuO4

Sr2RuO4 is at present the best candidate for being a superconducting analogue of the triplet superfluidity in ^3He. This material is a good (albeit correlated) Fermi liquid in the normal state and an exotic superconductor below Tc. The mechanism of superconductivity and symmetry of the order parameter are the main puzzling issues of on-going research. Here we present the results of our search for a viable description of the superconducting state realised in this material. Our calculations are based on a three-dimensional effective three-band model with a realistic band structure. We have found a state with non-zero order parameter on each of the three sheets of the Fermi surface. The corresponding gap in the quasi-particle spectrum has line or point nodes on the alpha and beta sheets and is complex with no nodes on the gamma sheet. This state describes remarkably well a number of existing experiments including power low temperature dependence of the specific heat, penetration depth, thermal conductivity etc. The stability of the state with respect to disorder and different interaction parameters are also analyzed briefly.

Exploring dynamical magnetism with time-dependent density-functional theory: from spin fluctuations to Gilbert damping

We use time-dependent spin-density-functional theory to study dynamical magnetic phenomena. First, we recall that the local-spin-density approximation (LSDA) fails to account correctly for magnetic fluctuations in the paramagnetic state of iron and other itinerant ferromagnets. Next, we construct a gradient-dependent density functional that does not suffer from this problem of the LSDA. This functional is then used to derive, for the first time, the phenomenological Gilbert equation of micromagnetics directly from time-dependent density-functional theory. Limitations and extensions of Gilbert damping are discussed on this basis, and some comparisons with phenomenological theories and experiments are made.

Exotic pairing via a central attraction: from the BCS to the Bose limits

In the context of a simple model featuring an explicit, central interaction potential, and using a standard functional-integral technique, we study superconductivity with angular momentum quantum number l=2 as an emergent property of the many-body system. Our interaction potential is attractive at a finite distance r_0, and the breaking of the rotational symmetry is the result of an interplay between r_0 and the inter-particle distance r_s which we deem generic to interactions of this type. However such interplay, responsible for the preference of a d-wave state for a range of intermediate densities, takes place only in the BCS limit. In contrast, as the Bose-Einstein (BE) limit is approached the internal energy of the "preformed pairs" becomes the dominant contribution and there is a quantum phase transition in which the s-wave symmetry is restored. We also find that the limiting value of the critical temperature is k_B T_c --> 3.315(\hbar^2/2m*)[n/2(2l+1)]^{2/3}, which coincides with the usual result only for l=0; for l>0, it differs in the degeneracy factor 1/(2l+1), which lowers T_c. Our results thus place constraints on exotic pairing in the BE limit, while at the same time indicating a particularly interesting route to pairing with l>0 in a BCS superconductor.

Spin Polarized Current in the Ground State of Superconductor - Ferromagnet - Insulator Trilayers

We study the ground state properties of a superconductor - ferromagnet - insulator trilayer on the basis of a Hubbard Model featuring exchange splitting in the ferromagnet and electron - electron attraction in the superconductor. We solve the spin - polarized Hartree - Fock - Gorkov equations together with the Maxwell's equation (Ampere's law) fully self-consistently. For certain values of the exchange splitting we find that a spontaneous spin polarized current is generated in the ground state and is intimately related to Andreev bound states at the Fermi level. Moreover, the polarization of the current strongly depends on the band filling.

On the nature of the superconducting gap in the cuprates

Recent experiments indicate that the excitation spectrum of the cuprates is characterised, in the superconducting state, by two energy scales: the ``coherence energy'' Δ_c and the ``pseudogap'' Δ_p. Here we consider a simple generalisation of the BCS model that yields exotic pairing and can describe, phenomenologically, the generic trends in the critical temperature T_c of cuprate superconductors. We use the model to predict the gap in the single-particle spectrum arising from the superconductivity and we find evidence that it corresponds to the lower of the two energy scales, Δ_c, seen in the experiments. This supports the view that the origin of the pseudogap is not superconducting fluctuations.

P-wave Pairing in superconducting Sr2RuO4

Two models for the superconducting state of Sr2RuO4 have been analyzed. In an "orbital model" the in-plane and out of-plane interactions between electrons on neighboring Ru atoms are assumed to be attractive. In spite of the single particle hybrisation of the orbitals the model shows two superconducting transitions and fine-tuning of parameters is necessary to get a single transition. Otherwise the model correctly describes a number of experimental data. The "orbital proximity model" introduced here assumes the existence of special kind of inter-orbital interaction, which mixes the symmetries of the order parameters. This model naturally shows single temperature transition, but as our calculations indicate, does not lead to correct dependence of the electronic specific heat.

A Damping of the de Haas-van Alphen Oscillations in the superconducting state

Deploying a recently developed semiclassical theory of quasiparticles in the superconducting state we study the de Haas-van Alphen effect. We find that the oscillations have the same frequency as in the normal state but their amplitude is reduced. We find an analytic formulae for this damping which is due to tunnelling between semiclassical quasiparticle orbits comprising both particle-like and hole-like segments. The quantitative predictions of the theory are consistent with the available data.

Spontaneous Spin Polarized Currents in Superconductor-Ferromagnetic Metal Heterostructures

We study a simple microscopic model for thin, ferromagnetic, metallic layers on semi-infinite bulk superconductor. We find that for certain values of the exchange spliting, on the ferromagnetic side, the ground states of such structures feature spontaneously induced spin polarized currents. Using a mean-field theory, which is selfconsistent with respect to the pairing amplitude $χ$, spin polarization $\vec{m}$ and the spontaneous current $\vec{j}_s$, we show that not only there are Andreev bound states in the ferromagnet but when their energies $E_n$ are near zero they support spontaneous currents parallel to the ferromagnetic-superconducting interface. Moreover, we demonstrate that the spin-polarization of these currents depends sensitively on the band filling.

The Behavior of a Triplet Superconductor in a Spin Only Magnetic Field

We investigate the order parameter of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ in an exchange-only magnetic field. A Ginzburg-Landau symmetry analysis implies three possibilities: a pure $^3$He A phase, a $^3$He A$_1$ or a $^3$He A$_2$ phase. We explore the exchange field dependence of the order parameter and energy gap in a one-band model of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. The numerical solutions show no A$_1$ phase and that the A$_2$ phase is lower in free energy than the A phase. We explore heat capacity as a function of temperature and field strength and find quantitatively different behaviors for the A and A$_2$ phases.

Spin currents and spin dynamics in time-dependent density-functional theory

We derive and analyse the equation of motion for the spin degrees of freedom within time-dependent spin-density-functional theory (TD-SDFT). Results are (i) a prescription for obtaining many-body corrections to the single-particle spin currents from the Kohn-Sham equation of TD-SDFT, (ii) the existence of an exchange-correlation (xc) torque within TD-SDFT, (iii) a prescription for calculating, from TD-SDFT, the torque exerted by spin currents on the spin magnetization, (iv) a novel exact constraint on approximate xc functionals, and (v) the discovery of serious deficiencies of popular approximations to TD-SDFT when applied to spin dynamics.

Interlayer Coupling and p-wave Pairing in Strontium Ruthenate

On the basis of a three orbital model and an effective attractive interaction between electrons we investigate the possible superconducting states, with $p$ and $f$-wave internal symmetry, of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. For an orbital dependent interaction which acts between in plane and out of plane nearest neighbour Ruthenium atoms we find a state for which the gap in the quasi-particle spectra has a line node on the $α$ and $β$ sheets of the Fermi Surface, but it is complex with no nodes on the $γ$-sheet. We show that this state is consistent with all the available experimental data. In particular, we present the results of our calculations of the specific heat and penetration depth as functions of the temperature.

The onset of magnetic order in fcc-Fe films on Cu(100)

On the basis of a first-principles electronic structure theory of finite temperature metallic magnetism in layered materials, we investigate the onset of magnetic order in thin (2-8 layers) fcc-Fe films on Cu(100) substrates. The nature of this ordering is altered when the systems are capped with copper. Indeed we find an oscillatory dependence of the Curie temperatures as a function of Cu-cap thickness, in excellent agreement with experimental data. The thermally induced spin-fluctuations are treated within a mean-field disordered local moment (DLM) picture and give rise to layer-dependent `local exchange splittings' in the electronic structure even in the paramagnetic phase. These features determine the magnetic intra- and interlayer interactions which are strongly influenced by the presence and extent of the Cu cap.

Three Band Model for Superconductivity in Sr2RuO4

We analyse the pairing symmetry of the order parameter in superconducting Sr2RuO4. Basing on a realistic three dimensional 3 band energy spectrum we have introduced effective attractive ellectron-electron interactions and found a solution which has line nodes in the gap in alpha and beta bands but not in gamma band. This state breaks time reversal symmetry and leads to the proper temperature dependence of the specific heat, in-plane penetration depth and thermal conductivity.

Superconducing Alloys with Weak and Strong Scattering: Anderson's Theorem and a Superconductor-Insulator Transition

We have studied the effects of strong impurity scattering on disordered superconductors beyond the low impurity concentration limit. By applying the full CPA to a superconductiong A-B binary alloy, we calculated the fluctuations of the local order parameters $Δ_{A}, Δ_{B}$ and charge densities, $n_{A}, n_{B}$ for weak and strong on site disorder. We find that for narrow band alloy s-wav e superconductors the conditions for Anderson's theorem are satisfied in general only for the case of particle-hole symmetry. In this case it is satisfied regardless whether we are in the weak or strong scattering regimes. Interestingly, we find that strong scattering leads to band splitting and in this regime for any band filling we have a critical concentration where a superconductor-insulator quantum phase transition occurs at T=0.
