Adaptive time-domain simulation of optical cavities with arbitrary dynamics

We present a fast time-domain simulator for optical cavities capable of reproducing non-linear dynamical regimes arising from ring-down effect during resonance crossings at high mirror velocities. The model is based on a recursive formulation of the intracavity electric field as a sum over round trips, preserving the cavity memory while maintaining high computational efficiency. The simulator is designed to achieve three main goals. First, the boundary conditions of the cavity can be modified at each simulation step, allowing arbitrary time-dependent variations of both mirror positions and input electric field. Second, the sampling frequency can be flexibly chosen by the user, however, it is internally adjusted before effectively executing the simulation to remain consistent with the cavity round-trip structure. Finally, high computational efficiency was obtained by avoiding the repeated evaluation of the full electric field history. The framework is validated through comparison with experimental data from the Virgo interferometer during a mechanical excitation experiment, showing good agreement in non-adiabatic regimes. Due to its efficiency and flexibility, the simulator provides a versatile tool for time-domain studies of optical resonators and future applications in real-time control and reinforcement-learning-based lock acquisition.

Investigation of magnetic noise in Advanced Virgo

The Advanced Virgo (AdV) sensitivity might be influenced by the effects of environmental noise, in particular magnetic noise (MN). In order to show the impact on the gravitational-wave strain signal h(t) and on the AdV sensitivity, we must understand the coupling between the environmental magnetic activity and the strain. The relationship between the environmental noise - measured by a physical environment monitor (PEM) - and h(t) is investigated using injection studies, where an intentional stimulus is introduced and the responses of both PEM sensors and the instrument are analyzed. We also present the most outstanding measurements and results obtained from both the characterization and the mitigation studies of the environmental MN. Results show that MN does not affect AdV sensitivity up to $\approx 100$ Mpc in BNS range.

Magnetic coupling to the Advanced Virgo payloads and its impact on the low frequency sensitivity

We study the electromagnetic coupling of the Advanced Virgo (AdV) Input Mirror Payload (IMP) in response to a slowly time-varying magnetic field. As the problem is not amenable to analytical solution, we employ and validate a finite element (FE) analysis approach. The FE model is built to represent as faithfully as possible the real object and it has been validated by comparison with experimental measurements. The intent is to estimate the induced currents and the magnetic field in the neighbourhood of the payload. The procedure found 21 equivalent electrical configurations that are compatible with the measurements. These have been used to compute the magnetic noise contribution to the total AdV strain noise. At the current stage of development AdV seems to be unaffected by magnetic noise, but we foresee a non-negligible coupling once AdV reaches the design sensitivity.
