Inflation in simple one-loop effective potentials of perturbative quantum gravity

We study inflation in scalar-tensor perturbative quantum gravity driven by a one-loop effective potential. We consider effective potentials generated by three models. The first model describes a single scalar field with a non-vanishing mass. The second model describes a massless scalar field with non-minimal coupling to the Einstein tensor. The third model generalises the Coleman-Weinberg model for the gravitational case. The first model can be consistent with the observational data for $N\sim 70$ e-foldings. The second model can be consistent with the observational data for $N \sim 40$ e-foldings. We did not find parameters that make the generalised Coleman-Weinberg model consistent with the observational data. We discuss the implications of these results and ways to improve them with other terms of effective action.

Effective potential of scalar-tensor gravity with quartic self-interaction of scalar field

One-loop effective potential of scalar-tensor gravity with a quartic scalar field self-interaction is evaluated up to first post-Minkowskian order. The potential develops an instability in the strong field regime which is expected from an effective theory. Depending on model parameters the instability region can be exponentially far in a strong field region. Possible applications of the model for inflationary scenarios are highlighted. It is shown that the model can enter the slow-roll regime with a certain set of parameters.

Fab Four Effective Field Theory Treatment

The article addresses the John interaction from Fab Four class of Horndeski models from the effective field theory point of view. Models with this interaction are heavily constrained by gravitational wave speed observations, so it is important to understand, if these constraints hold in the effective field theory framework. We show that John interaction induces new terms quadratic in curvature at the level of the effective (classical) action. These new terms generate additional low energy scalar and spin-2 gravitational degrees of freedom. Some of them have a non-vanishing decay width and some are ghosts. Discussion of these features is given
