Superconductivity up to 37 K in (A1-xSrx)Fe2As2 with A=K and Cs

A new hight Tc Fe-based compound system, AFe2As2 with A = K, Cs, K/Sr and Cs/Sr has been found. Through electron-doping, Tc of the A = K and Cs compounds rises to ~37 K, and finally enter a spin-density-wave state (SDW) through further electron doping with Sr. The observation demonstrates the crucial role of the (FeAs)-layers in the superconductivity in the Fe-based layered system and the special feature of elemental A-layers in this complex chemical system may provide new avenues to superconductivity at a higher Tc.

Pressure Effects on the Superconducting and Spin-Density-Wave States of the Newly Discovered Sm(O1-xFx)FeAs

High temperature superconductors with a Tc above 40 K have been found to be strongly correlated electron systems and to have a layered structure. Guided by these rules, Kamihara et al. discovered a Tc up to 26 K in the layered La(O1-xFx)FeAs. By replacing La with tri-valence rare-earth elements RE of smaller ionic radii, Tc has subsequently been raised to 41-52 K. Many theoretical models have been proposed emphasizing the important magnetic origin of superconductivity in this compound system and a possible further Tc-enhancement in RE(O1-xFx)FeAs by compression. This later prediction appears to be supported by the pressure-induced Tc-increase in La(O0.89F0.11)FeAs observed. Here we show that, in contrast to previous expectations, pressure can either suppress or enhance Tc, depending on the doping level, suggesting that a Tc exceeding 50's K may be found only in the yet-to-be discovered compound systems related to but different from R(O1-xFx)FeAs and that the Tc of La(O1-xFx)FeAs and Sm(O1-xFx)FeAs may be further raised to 50's K.

The Suppression and Recovery of the Ferroelectric Phase in Multiferroic $MnWO_4$

We report the discovery of a complete suppression of ferroelectricity in $MnWO_4$ by 10 % iron substitution and its restoration in external magnetic fields. The spontaneous polarization in $Mn_{0.9}Fe_{0.1}WO_4$ arises below 12 K in external fields above 4 T. The magnetic/ferroelectric phase diagram is constructed from the anomalies of the dielectric constant, polarization, magnetization, and heat capacity. The observations are qualitatively described by a mean field model with competing interactions and strong anisotropy. We propose that the magnetic field induces a non-collinear inversion symmetry breaking magnetic structure in $Mn_{0.9}Fe_{0.1}WO_4$.

Magnetic phase diagrams of the Kagome staircase compound Co3V2O8

At zero magnetic field, a series of five phase transitions occur in Co3V2O8. The Neel temperature, TN=11.4 K, is followed by four additional phase changes at T1=8.9 K, T2=7.0 K, T3=6.9 K, and T4=6.2 K. The different phases are distinguished by the commensurability of the b-component of its spin density wave vector. We investigate the stability of these various phases under magnetic fields through dielectric constant and magnetic susceptibility anomalies. The field-temperature phase diagram of Co3V2O8 is completely resolved. The complexity of the phase diagram results from the competition of different magnetic states with almost equal ground state energies due to competing exchange interactions and frustration.

Ferroelectricity in perovskite $HoMnO_3$ and $YMnO_3$

Ferroelectricity is observed in orthorhombic $HoMnO_3$ and $YMnO_3$ at the magnetic lock-in transitions into an E-type structure or an incommensurate phase with a temperature independent wave vector, respectively. In $HoMnO_3$ the ferroelectric polarization strongly depends on the external magnetic field indicating the involvement of the rare earth moment order in this compound. The results are discussed within the framework of recent theoretical models, in particular the double exchange driven polar displacements predicted for E-type magnetic structures.

Incommensurate magnetic structure in the orthorhombic perovskite ErMnO_3

By combining dielectric, specific heat, and magnetization measurements and high-resolution neutron powder diffraction, we have investigated the thermodynamic and magnetic/structural properties of the metastable orthorhombic perovskite ErMnO_3 prepared by high-pressure synthesis. The system becomes antiferromagnetically correlated below 42 K and undergoes a lock-in transition at 28 K with propagation wave vector (0,k_b,0), which remains incommensurate at low temperature. The intercorrelation between the magnetic structure and electric properties and the role of the rare earth moment are discussed.

Pressure induced enhancement of ferroelectricity in multiferroic $R$Mn$_2$O$_5$($R$=Tb,Dy, and Ho)

Measurements of ferroelectric polarization and dielectric constant were done on $R$Mn$_2$O$_5$ ($R$=Tb, Dy, and Ho) with applied hydrostatic pressures of up to 18 kbar. At ambient pressure, distinctive anomalies were observed in the temperature profile of both physical properties at critical temperatures marking the onset of long range AFM order (T$_{N1}$), ferroelectricity (T$_{C1}$) as well as at temperatures when anomalous changes in the polarization, dielectric constant and spin wave commensurability have been previously reported. In particular, the step in the dielectric constant at low temperatures (T$_{C2}$), associated with both a drop in the ferroelectric polarization and an incommensurate magnetic structure, was shown to be suddenly quenched upon passing an $R$-dependent critical pressure. This was shown to correlate with the stabilization of the high ferroelectric polarization state which is coincident with the commensurate magnetic structure. The observation is suggested to be due to a pressure induced phase transition into a commensurate magnetic structure as exemplified by the pressure-temperature ($p$-$T$) phase diagrams constructed in this work. The $p$-$T$ phase diagrams are determined for all three compounds.

Thermal expansion and pressure effect in MnWO4

MnWO4 has attracted attention because of its ferroelectric property induced by frustrated helical spin order. Strong spin-lattice interaction is necessary to explain ferroelectricity associated with this type of magnetic order. We have conducted thermal expansion measurements along the a, b, c axes revealing the existence of strong anisotropic lattice anomalies at T1=7.8 K, the temperature of the magnetic lock-in transition into a commensurate low-temperature (reentrant paraelectric) phase. The effect of hydrostatic pressure up to 1.8 GPa on the FE phase is investigated by measuring the dielectric constant and the FE polarization. The low- temperature commensurate and paraelectric phase is stabilized and the stability range of the ferroelectric phase is diminished under pressure.

Magnetic Phase Diagrams of Multiferroic Hexagonal RMnO3 (R=Er, Yb, Tm, and Ho)

The magnetic phase diagrams of RMnO3 (R = Er, Yb, Tm, Ho) are investigated up to 14 Tesla via magnetic and dielectric measurements. The stability range of the AFM order below the Neel temperature of the studied RMnO3 extends to far higher magnetic fields than previously assumed. Magnetic irreversibility indicating the presence of a spontaneous magnetic moment is found near 50 K for R=Er, Yb, and Tm. At very low temperatures and low magnetic fields the phase boundary defined by the ordering of the rare earth moments is resolved. The sizable dielectric anomalies observed along all phase boundaries are evidence for strong spin-lattice coupling in the hexagonal RMnO3. In HoMnO3 the strong magnetoelastic distortions are investigated in more detail via magnetostriction experiments up to 14 Tesla. The results are discussed based on existing data on magnetic symmetries and the interactions between the Mn-spins, the rare earth moments, and the lattice.

Pressure-Temperature Phase Diagram of Multiferroic $Ni_3V_2O_8$

The pressure-temperature phase diagram of multiferroic $Ni_3V_2O_8$ is investigated for hydrostatic pressures up to 2 GPa. The stability range of the ferroelectric phase associated with the incommensurate helical spin order is reduced by pressure and ferroelectricity is completely suppressed at the critical pressure of 1.64 GPa at 6.2 K. Thermal expansion measurements at ambient pressure show strong step-like anomalies of the lattice parameters associated with the lock-in transition into the commensurate paraelectric phase. The expansion anomalies are highly anisotropic, the related volume change is consistent with the high-pressure phase diagram.

Magnetoelastic Effects and Magnetic Phase Diagram of Multiferroic $DyMn_2O_5$

The magnetoelastic coupling in multiferroic $DyMn_2O_5$ is investigated by magnetostriction measurements along the three crystallographic orientations. Strong lattice anomalies as a function of the magnetic field are detected at the low temperature magnetic and ferroelectric phase transitions. The sign and magnitude of the magnetostrictive coefficient as well as the lattice anomalies at the transitions are correlated with the Dy moment order and with the sharp changes of the dielectric constant and the ferroelectric polarization. With the magnetic field applied along the c-axis a new high-field phase has been detected the magnetic structure of which has yet to be explored.

Magnetic Field Effect and Dielectric Anomalies at the Spin Reorientation Phase Transition of GdFe3(BO3)4

GdFe3(BO3)4 exhibits a structural phase transition at 156 K, antiferromagnetic order of the Fe3+ moments at 36 K followed by a spin reorientation phase transition at 9 K. The reorientation phase transition is studied through dielectric, magnetic and heat capacity measurements under the application of external magnetic fields of up to 7 kOe. The dielectric constant indicates the existence of two distinct anomalies at T_SR = 9 K that separate in temperature under external magnetic fields. The spin rotation phase transition is proven to be of the first-order nature through the magnetic analogue of the Clausius-Clapeyron equation. Magneto-dielectric effect of up to 1% is observed at 8 K and 7 kOe. The uniaxial magnetocaloric effect along the c axis is observed below the spin reorientation phase transition of 9 K.

Structural Anomalies at the Magnetic and Ferroelectric Transitions in $RMn_2O_5$ (R=Tb, Dy, Ho)

Strong anomalies of the thermal expansion coefficients at the magnetic and ferroelectric transitions have been detected in multiferroic $RMn_2O_5$. Their correlation with anomalies of the specific heat and the dielectric constant is discussed. The results provide evidence for the magnetic origin of the ferroelectricity mediated by strong spin-lattice coupling in the compounds. Neutron scattering data for $HoMn_2O_5$ indicate a spin reorientation at the two low-temperature phase transitions.

Coupling of Magnetic Order, Ferroelectricity, and Lattice Strain in Multiferroic Rare Earth Manganites

Multiferroic rare earth manganites attracted recent attention because of the coexistence of different types of magnetic and ferroelectric orders resulting in complex phase diagrams and a wealth of physical phenomena. The coupling and mutual interference of the different orders and the large magnetoelectric effect observed in several compounds are of fundamental interest and bear the potential for future applications in which the dielectric (magnetic) properties can be modified by the onset of a magnetic (dielectric) transition or the application of a magnetic (electric) field. The physical mechanisms of the magnetoelectric effect and the origin of ferroelectric order at magnetic transitions have yet to be explored. We discuss multiferroic phenomena in the hexagonal HoMnO3 and show that the strong magneto-dielectric coupling is intimately related to the lattice strain induced by unusually large spin-phonon correlations.

Low temperature dielectric anomalies in HoMnO_3: The complex phase diagram

The dielectric constant of multiferroic hexagonal HoMnO_3 exhibits an unprecedented diversity of anomalies at low temperatures (1.8 K< T <10 K) and under external magnetic fields related to magnetic phase transitions in the coupled system of Ho moments, Mn spins, and ferroelectric polarization. The derived phase diagram is far more complex than previously assumed including reentrant phases, phase transitions with distinct thermal and field hysteresis, as well as several multicritical points. Magnetoelastic interactions introduce lattice anomalies at the magnetic phase transitions. The re-evaluation of the T-H phase diagram of HoMnO_3 is demanded.

Strong spin-lattice coupling in multiferroic HoMnO$_{3}$: Thermal expansion anomalies and pressure effect

Evidence for a strong spin-lattice coupling in multiferroic HoMnO_3 is derived from thermal expansion measurements along a- and c-axis. The magnetoelastic effect results in sizable anomalies of the thermal expansivities at the antiferromagnetic (T_N) and the spin rotation (T_{SR}) transition temperatures as well as in a negative c-axis expansivity below room temperature. The coupling between magnetic orders and dielectric properties below T_N is explained by the lattice strain induced by the magnetoelastic effect. At T_{SR} various physical quantities show discontinuities that are thermodynamically consistent with a first order phase transition.

Large Magneto-Dielectric Effects in Orthorhombic HoMnO3 and YMnO3

We have found a remarkable increase (up to 60 %) of the dielectric constant with the onset of magnetic order at 42 K in the metastable orthorhombic structures of YMnO3 and HoMnO3 that proves the existence of a strong magneto-dielectric coupling in the compounds. Magnetic, dielectric, and thermodynamic properties show distinct anomalies at the onset of the incommensurate magnetic order and thermal hysteresis effects are observed around the lock-in transition temperature at which the incommensurate magnetic order locks into a temperature independent wave vector. The orders of Mn3+ spins and Ho3+ moments both contribute to the magneto-dielectric coupling. A large magneto-dielectric effect was observed in HoMnO3 at low temperature where the dielectric constant can be tuned by an external magnetic field resulting in a decrease of up to 8 % at 7 Tesla. By comparing data for YMnO3 and HoMnO3 the contributions to the coupling between the dielectric response and Mn and Ho magnetic orders are separated.
