Acoustic Faraday effect in Tb$_3$Ga$_5$O$_{12}$

The transverse acoustic wave propagating along the [100] axis of the cubic Tb$_3$Ga$_5$O$_{12}$ (acoustic $c_{44}$ mode) is doubly degenerate. A magnetic field applied in the direction of propagation lifts this degeneracy and leads to the rotation of the polarization vector - the magneto-acoustic Faraday rotation. Here, we report on the observation and analysis of the magneto-acoustic Faraday-effect in Tb$_3$Ga$_5$O$_{12}$ in static and pulsed magnetic fields. We present also a theoretical model based on magnetoelastic coupling of 4$f$ electrons to both, acoustic and optical phonons and an effective coupling between them. This model explains the observed linear frequency dependence of the Faraday rotation angle.

Universal intermittent properties of particle trajectories in highly turbulent flows

We present a collection of eight data sets, from state-of-the-art experiments and numerical simulations on turbulent velocity statistics along particle trajectories obtained in different flows with Reynolds numbers in the range $R_λ\in [120:740]$. Lagrangian structure functions from all data sets are found to collapse onto each other on a wide range of time lags, revealing a universal statistics, and calling for a unified theoretical description. Parisi-Frisch Multifractal theory, suitable extended to the dissipative scales and to the Lagrangian domain, is found to capture intermittency of velocity statistics over the whole three decades of temporal scales here investigated.

Electron renormalization of sound interaction with two-level systems in superconducting metglasses

The crossing of temperature dependencies of sound velocity in the normal and the superconducting state of metallic glasses indicates renormalization of the intensity of sound interaction with two-level systems (TLS) caused by their coupling with electrons. In this paper we have analyzed different approaches to a quantitative description of renormalization using the results of low-temperature ultrasonic investigation of ZrTiCuNiBe amorphous alloy. It is shown that the adiabatic renormalization of the coherent tunneling amplitude can explain only part of the whole effect observed in the experiment. There exists another mechanism of renormalization affecting only nearly symmetric TLS.

Sound attenuation in the superconducting amorphous alloy ZrTiCuNiBe

The superconducting energy gap and the parameter of the intensity of electron scattering at two-level systems in amorphous ZrTiCuNiBe are determined from the results of measurements of sound attenuation. The mechanism of adiabatic renormalization of the amplitude of coherent tunneling is used for a quantitative description of the peculiarities of sound absorption in the vicinity of critical temperature.

Elastic Constants and Charge Ordering in a'-NaV2O5

We present the temperature dependence of shear and longitudinal elastic constants in a'-NaV2O5. For the longitudinal c22 and c33 modes we find anomalies at Tc in contrast to the Spin Peierls substance CuGeO3 where only the longitudinal mode along the chain shows a pronounced effect at TSP. The c66 shear mode (propagation along the chain in b-direction polarization in a-direction) shows strong softening of 12%. Such a large effect is absent for all shear modes in CuGeO3. We can interpret this softening with a coupling of the exy symmetry strain to the charge fluctuation of B1g symmetry. We give the possible low temperature charge distribution.

Electron renormalization of sound interaction with two-level systems in superconducting metglasses

The crossing of temperature dependences of the sound velocity in normal and superconducting state of metallic glasses points out unambiguously the renormalization of the intensity of sound interaction with two-level systems (TLS), caused by their coupling with electrons. We propose a simple scenario which allows us to describe qualitatively the influence of the superconducting transition on the sound velocity and attenuation in superconducting metglasses and to make quantative estimations of renormalization parameters.
