NuSTAR's Intentional Stray Light Observation of Scorpious X-1

We present the first spectral analysis of Scorpius X-1 (Sco X-1) using intentional stray light (SL) observations taken by NuSTAR. Unlike focused observations that have high telemetry load when observing bright sources, intentional SL observations can help reduce the telemetry and reduce the effect of dead time, thereby maximizing the on-source exposure time; all of which are critical for extremely bright sources that exhibit short timescale variability like Sco X-1. The intentional SL observation of Sco X-1, taken in 2023, captured the source primarily in the flaring branch (FB) of the Z track. We performed spectral modeling of the continuum and reprocessed emission. A combination of thermal and Comptonization components (modeled with thcomp) provided a robust fit to the continuum. We test both scenarios for Comptonized emitting regions arising from the accretion disk and close to the neutron star, which provides comparable fit statistics. Reflection was modeled with the relxillNS model, enabling measurements of disk inclination consistent with prior radio and IXPE studies and comparison of inner disk radius to the emission radii of the thermal components. Overall, the results from the intentional SL data provide comparable results to literature on the focused NuSTAR data of Sco X-1 in the FB or taken contemporaneously. The success of this observation demonstrates the capability of SL data to yield high-quality spectral constraints comparable to focused observations, offering a powerful avenue for studying bright X-ray binaries with NuSTAR.

Simultaneous NICER and NuSTAR Observations of the Neutron Star Low-mass X-ray Binary Serpens X-1

We present the first contemporaneous NICER and NuSTAR analysis of the low-mass X-ray binary Serpens X-1 obtained in June 2023, performing broadband X-ray spectral analysis modeling of the reprocessed emission with RELXILLNS from $0.4-30$ keV. We test various continuum and background estimation models to ensure that our results do not hinge on the choice of model used and found that the detection of reflection features is independent of the choice of both continuum and background model. The position of the inner accretion disk is consistent with the last stable circular orbit ($R_{\rm in} \leq 1.2$~$R_{ISCO}$) and a low inclination of $i\leq 8.3 ^{\circ}$. Additionally, we investigate the presence of the low energy ($\sim$ 1 keV) Fe L complex in the data from NICER and the Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) on XMM-Newton that was previously reported in the literature. We find that the line is at most a 2% feature relative to the reprocessed continuum and are unable to claim a definitive detection for the current dataset. However, we discuss plausible conditions and systems that would increase the likelihood of detecting this feature in the future.

StrayCats II: An Updated Catalog of NuSTAR Stray Light Observations

We present an updated catalog of StrayCats (a catalog of NuSTAR stray light observations of X-ray sources) that includes nearly 18 additional months of observations. StrayCats v2 has an added 53 sequence IDs, 106 rows, and 3 new identified stray light (SL) sources in comparison to the original catalog. The total catalog now has 489 unique sequence IDs, 862 entries, and 83 confirmed StrayCats sources. Additionally, we provide new resources for the community to gauge the utility and spectral state of the source in a given observation. We have created long term light curves for each identified SL source using MAXI and Swift/BAT data when available. Further, source extraction regions for 632 identified SL observations were created and are available to the public. In this paper we present an overview of the updated catalog and new resources for each identified StrayCats SL source.

NuSTAR Observations of the Accreting Atolls GX 3+1, 4U 1702-429, 4U 0614+091, and 4U 1746-371

Atoll sources are accreting neutron star (NS) low-mass X-ray binaries. We present a spectral analysis of four persistent atoll sources (GX 3+1, 4U 1702$-$429, 4U 0614+091, and 4U 1746$-$371) observed for $\sim20$ ks each with NuSTAR to determine the extent of the inner accretion disk. These sources range from an apparent luminosity of $0.006-0.11$ of the Eddington limit (assuming the empirical limit of $3.8\times10^{38}$ ergs s$^{-1}$). Broad Fe emission features shaped by Doppler and relativistic effects close to the NS were firmly detected in three of these sources. The position of the disk appears to be close to the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) in each case. For GX 3+1, we determine $R_{in}=1.8^{+0.2}_{-0.6}\ R_{\mathrm{ISCO}}$ (90% confidence level) and an inclination of $27^{\circ}-31^{\circ}$. For 4U 1702$-$429, we find a $R_{in}=1.5_{-0.4}^{+1.6}\ R_{\mathrm{ISCO}}$ and inclination of $53^{\circ}-64^{\circ}$. For 4U 0614+091, the disk has a position of $R_{in}=1.3_{-0.2}^{+5.4}\ R_{\mathrm{ISCO}}$ and inclination of $50^{\circ}-62^{\circ}$. If the disk does not extend to the innermost stable circular orbit, we can place conservative limits on the magnetic field strength in these systems in the event that the disk is truncated at the Alfvén radius. This provides the limit at the poles of $B\leq6.7\times10^{8}$ G, $3.3\times10^{8}$ G, and $14.5\times10^{8}$ G for GX 3+1, 4U 1702$-$429, and 4U 0614+091, respectively. For 4U 1746$-$371, we argue that the most plausible explanation for the lack of reflection features is a combination of source geometry and strong Comptonization. We place these sources among the larger sample of NSs that have been observed with NuSTAR.
