Network permeability changes according to a quadratic power law upon removal of a single edge

We report an empirical power law for the reduction of network permeability in statistically homogeneous spatial networks upon removal of a single edge. We characterize this power law for plexus-like microvascular sinusoidal networks from liver tissue, as well as perturbed two- and three-dimensional regular lattices. We provide a heuristic argument for the observed power law by mapping arbitrary spatial networks that satisfies Darcy's law on an small-scale resistor network.

In-phase and anti-phase flagellar synchronization by basal coupling

We present a theory of flagellar synchronization in the green alga Chlamydomonas, using full treatment of flagellar hydrodynamics. We find that two recently proposed synchronization mechanisms, basal coupling and flagellar waveform compliance, stabilize anti-phase synchronization if operative in isolation. Their nonlinear superposition, however, stabilizes in-phase synchronization as observed in experiments. Our theory predicts different synchronization dynamics in fluids of increased viscosity or external flow, suggesting a non-invasive way to control synchronization by hydrodynamic coupling.

Hydrodynamic synchronization of flagellar oscillators

We survey the theory synchronization in collections of noisy oscillators. This framework is applied to flagellar synchronization by hydrodynamic interactions. The time-reversibility of hydrodynamics at low Reynolds numbers prompts swimming strokes that break symmetry to facilitate hydrodynamic synchronization. We discuss different physical mechanisms for flagellar synchronization, which break this symmetry in different ways.
