Irreducible representations of the inhomogeneous Lorentz group with two-fold Wigner degeneracy

Not all complete set of spinors can be used as expansion coefficients of a quantum field. In fact, Steven Weinberg established the uniqueness of Dirac spinors for this purpose provided: (a) one paid due attention to the multiplicative phases for each of the spinors, and (b) one paired these to creation and annihilation operators in a specific manner. This is implicit in his implementation of the rotational symmetry for the spin half quantum field. Among the numerous complete set of spinors that are available to a physicist, Elko occupies a unique status that allows it to enter as expansion coefficients of a quantum field without violating Weinberg's no go theorem. How this paradigm changing claim arises is the primary subject of this communication. Weinberg's no go theorem is evaded by exploiting a uniquely special feature of Elko that allows us to introduce a doubling of the particle-antiparticle degrees of freedom from four to eight. Weinberg had dismissed this degeneracy on the ground that, "no examples are known of particles that furnish unconventional representations of inversions." Here we will find that this degeneracy, once envisioned by Eugene Wigner, in fact gives rise to a quantum field that has all the theoretical properties required of dark matter.

Duality as a Method to Derive a Gauge Invariant Massive Electrodynamics and New Interactions

Taking into account the recent developments associated with duality in physics, this article is focused on investigating the properties of a tensor generalization of the electrodynamics dual to the standard vector model even considering the full radiative corrections. A discussion on duality is extended for non-linearly interacting models. The alternative tensor structure allows a new local self-interaction and also a partial gauge invariant mass term. In this way, the renormalization conditions, a new interaction, Ward-Takahashi identities for all the sets of gauge symmetries, and the Schwinger-Dyson quantum equations are carefully provided to consistently characterize the propagating modes of the quantum system. The possibility of this gauge invariant massive extension is considered from the perspective of a generalized Stueckelberg procedure for higher derivative systems.

Path Integral Quantization of Generalized Stueckelberg Electrodynamics: A Faddeev-Jackiw Approach

We build a setup for path integral quantization through the Faddeev-Jackiw approach, extending it to include Grassmannian degrees of freedom, to be later implemented in a model of generalized electrodynamics that involves fourth-order derivatives in the components of a massive vector field being endowed with gauge freedom, due to an additional scalar field. Namely, the generalized Stueckelberg electrodynamics. In the first instance, we work on the free case to gain some familiarity with the program and, subsequently, we add the interaction with fermionic matter fields to complete our aim. In addition to deriving the correct classical brackets for such a model, we get the full expression for the associated generating functional and its associated integration measure.

On valley asymmetry in a topological interaction for quasi-particles

This paper is focused on investigating the effects of a statistical interaction for graphene-like systems, providing Haldane-like properties for topologically trivial lattices. The associated self-energy correction yields an effective next-nearest hopping, inducing the topological phase, whose specific solutions are scrutinized. In the case of an external magnetic field, it leads to a renormalized quasi-particle structure with generalized Landau levels and explicit valley asymmetry. A suitable tool for implementing such achievements is a judicious indefinite metric quantization, leading to advances in field theory foundations. Since the topological behavior is encoded in the radiative corrections, an unequivocal treatment using an integral representation is carefully developed.

Quantum electrodynamics in the null-plane causal perturbation theory II

We develop a complete formulation of quantum gauge invariance in light-front dynamics for interacting theories with massless vector gauge fields in the framework of null-plane causal perturbation theory. We apply the general results to quantum electrodynamics, showing that the so-called "gauge terms" present in the photon commutation distribution when quantized under the null-plane gauge condition have no contribution in the calculation of the physical S-operator matrix elements at any order. We use this result to prove the normalizability of the theory, and to calculate the electron's self-energy at second order.

Quantum electrodynamics in the null-plane causal perturbation theory

We study quantum electrodynamics (QED) in the light-front dynamical form by using null-plane causal perturbation theory. We establish the equivalence with instant dynamics for the scattering processes, whose normalization allows to construct the instantaneous terms of the usual null-plane QED Lagrangian density. Then we study vacuum polarization and normalize it by studying its insertions into Møller's scattering process, obtaining the complete photon's propagator, which turns to be equivalent to the one of instant dynamics only when gauge invariance is taken into account.

Planar generalized electrodynamics for one-loop amplitude in the Heisenberg picture

We examine the generalized quantum electrodynamics as a natural extension of the Maxwell electrodynamics to cure the one-loop divergence. We establish a precise scenario to discuss the underlying features between photon and fermion where the perturbative Maxwell electrodynamics fails. Our quantum model combines stability, unitarity, and gauge invariance as the central properties. To interpret the quantum fluctuations without suffering from the physical conflicts proved by Haag's theorem, we construct the covariant quantization in the Heisenberg picture instead of the Interaction one. Furthermore, we discuss the absence of anomalous magnetic moment and mass-shell singularity.

A Generalized Stueckelberg-Higgs gauge theories

The aim of this work is to discuss and explore some generalized aspects of generation of photon mass respecting gauge symmetry. We introduce generalized Stueckelberg and Higgs gauge theories and present the classical and quantum frameworks related to them. We construct the quantum theory by writing the transition amplitude in the Fadeev-Senjanovic formalism and put it in a covariant form by the Fadeev-Popov method. We also analyze the independence of the transition amplitude by gauge parameters via BRS-T symmetry. Even in the generalized context, the Stueckelberg structure influences the quantization process of the Higgs theory in the 't Hooft's fashion, in which an intimate relationship between the Stueckelberg compensating field and the Goldstone boson arises.

LyST: a Scalar-Tensor Theory of Gravity on Lyra Manifold

We present a scalar-tensor theory of gravity on a torsion-free and metric compatible Lyra manifold. This is obtained by generalizing the concept of physical reference frame by considering a scale function defined over the manifold. The choice of a specific frame induces a local base, naturally non-holonomic, whose structure constants give rise to extra terms in the expression of the connection coefficients and in the expression for the covariant derivative. In the Lyra manifold, transformations between reference frames involving both coordinates and scale change the transformation law of tensor fields, when compared to those of the Riemann manifold. From a direct generalization of the Einstein-Hilbert minimal action coupled with a matter term, it was possible to build a Lyra invariant action, which gives rise to the associated Lyra Scalar-Tensor theory of gravity (LyST), with field equations for $g_{μν}$ and $ϕ$. These equations have a well-defined Newtonian limit, from which it can be seen that both metric and scale play a role in the description gravitational interaction. We present a spherically symmetric solution for the LyST gravity field equations. It dependent on two parameters $m$ and $r_{L}$, whose physical meaning is carefully investigated. We highlight the properties of LyST spherically symmetric line element and compare it to Schwarzchild solution.

Radiative corrections in the Yukawa model within the null-plane causal perturbation theory framework

Practical calculations in light-front dynamics are, as a general rule, complicated, since there is no consensus about how to treat the poles which come from the instantaneous parts of Feynman's propagators of the fields. An alternative to solve this difficulty is null-plane causal perturbation theory, a recent developed framework which prevents the appearance of the mentioned poles by avoiding the usage of Feynman's propagators in "loop distributions", requiring no regularization of the amplitudes. In this study, we treat the radiative corrections in the neutral Yukawa's model in that framework. Particularly, we explicitly calculate the boson and fermion self-energies and show that the results obtained with this approach are equivalent to that of the instant dynamics.

Dynamical invariants and quantization of the one-dimensional time-dependent, damped, and driven harmonic oscillator

In this paper, it is proposed a quantization procedure for the one-dimensional harmonic oscillator with time-dependent frequency, time-dependent driven force, and time-dependent dissipative term. The method is based on the construction of dynamical invariants previously proposed by the authors, in which fundamental importance is given to the linear invariants of the oscillator.

Higgs Mechanism and Debye Screening in the Generalized Electrodynamics

In this work we study the Higgs mechanism and the Debye shielding for the Bopp-Podolsky theory of electrodynamics. We find that not only the massless sector of the Podolsky theory acquires a mass in both these phenomena, but also that its massive sector has its mass changed. Furthermore, we find a mathematical analogy in the way these masses change between these two mechanisms. Besides exploring the behaviour of the screened potentials, we find a temperature for which the presence of the generalized gauge field may be experimentally detected.

The causal approach proof for the equivalence of $SDKP_{4}$ and $SQED_{4}$ at tree-level

The description of the electromagnetic interaction of charged spinless particles is usually formulated by the Scalar Quantum Electrodynamics. However, there is an alternative formulation given by the Duffin-Kemmer-Petiau theory: the Scalar DKP gauge theory. The proof of the equivalence between these two formulations has been discussed in many researches, but there is not yet a conclusive proof. In this paper, we initiate a complete proof in the framework of the Causal Perturbation theory, showing that both scalar formulations provide the same results for the differential cross section at tree level.

Duality and Self-duality of the Spin-1 Model in the Covariant Operator Formalism

We perform the covariant operator quantization of the spin-$1$ model in $2+1$ spacetime dimensions to rigorously establish its dualities. For this purpose, the Kugo-Ojima-Nakanishi formalism, based on an indefinite metric Hilbert space in the Heisenberg picture, is used. We show that it is possible to extract a massive physical excitation constructed from a linear combination of the vector field $A_μ$ and the $B$-field. In turn, we also show that this excitation generates the Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory. This is achieved by exploring the two-point function of the vector field.

Dynamical mass generation in QED$_3$: A non-perturbative approach

In this work, we provide a non-perturbative description of the phenomenon of dynamical mass generation in the case of quantum electrodynamics in $2+1$ dimensions. We will use the Kugo-Ojima-Nakanishi formalism to conclude that the physical Hilbert space of the asymptotic photon field is the same as that of the Maxwell-Chern-Simons.

Transition amplitude, partition function and the role of physical degrees of freedom in gauge theories

This work explores the quantum dynamics of the interaction between scalar (matter) and vectorial (intermediate) particles and studies their thermodynamic equilibrium in the grand-canonical ensemble. The aim of the article is to clarify the connection between the physical degrees of freedom of a theory in both the quantization process and the description of the thermodynamic equilibrium, in which we see an intimate connection between physical degrees of freedom, Gibbs free energy and the equipartition theorem. We have split the work into two sections. First, we analyze the quantum interaction in the context of the generalized scalar Duffin-Kemmer-Petiau quantum electrodynamics (GSDKP) by using the functional formalism. We build the Hamiltonian structure following the Dirac methodology, apply the Faddeev-Senjanovic procedure to obtain the transition amplitude in the generalized Coulomb gauge and, finally, use the Faddeev-Popov-DeWitt method to write the amplitude in covariant form in the no-mixing gauge. Subsequently, we exclusively use the Matsubara-Fradkin (MF) formalism in order to describe fields in thermodynamical equilibrium. The corresponding equations in thermodynamic equilibrium for the scalar, vectorial and ghost sectors are explicitly constructed from which the extraction of the partition function is straightforward. It is in the construction of the vectorial sector that the emergence and importance of the ghost fields are revealed: they eliminate the extra non-physical degrees of freedom of the vectorial sector thus maintaining the physical degrees of freedom.

BRST symmetry and fictitious parameters

Our goal in this work is to present the variational method of fictitious parameters and its connection with the BRST symmetry. Firstly we implement the method in QED at zero temperature and then we extend the analysis to GQED at finite temperature. As we will see the core of the study is the general statement in gauge theories at finite temperature, assigned by Tyutin work, that the physics does not depend on the gauge choices, covariant or not, due to BRST symmetry.

Radiative Corrections in GSDKP

We show explicit the first radiative correction for the vertex and photon-photon 4-point function in Generalized Scalar Duffin-Kemmer-Petiau Quantum Electrodynamcis (GSDKP), utilizing the dimensional regularization method, where the gauge symmetry is manifest. As we shall see one of the consequences of the study is that the DKP algebra ensures the functioning of theWard- Takahashi-Fradkin (WTF) identities in the first radiative corrections prohibiting certain ultraviolet (UV) divergences. This result leads us to ask whether this connection between DKP algebra, UV divergences, and quantum gauge symmetry (WTF) is a general statment.
