Field-Induced Selective Spin Gap Closure and Quantum Criticality in BaNd$_2$ZnS$_5$

We report thermodynamic evidence for field-induced mode-selective quantum criticality in the layered rare-earth magnet BaNd2ZnS5 (BNZS). Below the Neel temperature TN = 2.9 K, spin-orbit-entangled Nd3+ moments form two symmetry-inequivalent low-energy spin-excitation modes arising from Kramers doublet physics under a magnetic field, with distinct gaps Delta_L and Delta_H. For magnetic fields applied along the [110] direction, the lower-energy gap Delta_L softens continuously and collapses at a critical field Hc ~ 2 T, while the higher-energy gap Delta_H remains gapped, leaving the system in an intermediate partially critical phase. Despite the partial nature of the criticality, thermodynamic measurements reveal a continuous quantum phase transition. The ac susceptibility shows universal scaling behavior, with chi_ac(T, H) collapsing onto a single scaling function and following chi_ac ~ T^-0.2 at criticality. A finite residual Sommerfeld coefficient gamma_0 further indicates the emergence of gapless excitations confined to a single symmetry sector near the quantum critical point. In contrast to conventional quantum criticality based on global softening of low-energy excitations, BNZS exhibits a selective breakdown of Kramers-doublet excitations due to its strong anisotropic interactions. Our results establish BNZS as a spin-orbit-coupled rare-earth magnet where quantum criticality is not global but mode-selective, with anisotropic interactions enabling independent criticality in distinct excitation sectors.

The fate of time-reversal symmetry breaking in UTe2

Topological superconductivity is a long-sought state of matter in bulk materials, and odd-parity superconductor UTe$_2$ is a prime candidate. The recent observation of a field-trainable spontaneous Kerr signal in UTe$_2$ at the onset of superconductivity provides strong evidence that the superconducting order parameter is multicomponent and breaks time-reversal symmetry. Here, we perform Kerr effect measurements on a number of UTe$_2$ samples -- grown $via$ both chemical vapor transport and the molten-salt-flux methods -- that show a single superconducting transition between 1.6~K and 2.1~K. Our results show no evidence for a spontaneous Kerr signal in zero field measurements. This implies that the superconducting state of UTe$_2$ does not intrinsically break time-reversal symmetry. Instead, we observe a field-trainable signal that varies in magnitude between samples and between different locations on a single sample, which is a sign of inhomogeneous magnetic regions. Our results provide an examination of representative UTe$_2$ samples and place strong constraints on the superconducting order parameter of UTe$_2$.

Strong magnetoelastic effect in CeCo$_{1-x}$Fe$_{x}$Si as Néel order is suppressed

A very strong magnetoelastic effect in the CeCo$_{1-x}$Fe$_{x}$Si alloys is reported. The strength of the magnetostrictive effect can be tuned upon changing $x$. The moderate low-temperature linear magnetostriction observed at low Fe concentrations becomes very large ($\frac {ΔL}{L} \left(16 T,2 K\right) =$ 3$\times$10$^{-3}$) around the critical concentration ($x_c \approx$ 0.23) at which the long-range antiferromagnetic order vanishes. Upon increasing doping through the non-magnetic region ($x > x_c$), the magnetostriction strength gradually weakens again. Remarkably the low-temperature magnetostriction at the critical concentration shows a pronounced $S$-like shape (centered at $B_m \sim$ 6 T) resembling other well-known Ce-based metamagnetic systems like CeRu$_2$Si$_2$ and CeTiGe. Unlike what is observed in these compounds, however, the field dependence of the magnetization shows only a minor upturn around $B_m$ vaguely resembling a metamagnetic behavior. The subtle interplay between magnetic order and the Kondo screening seems to originate an enhanced valence susceptibility slightly changing the Ce ions valence, ultimately triggering the large magnetostriction observed around the critical concentration.

Anisotropic magneto-crystalline coupling of the skyrmion lattice in MnSi

We investigate the anisotropic nature of magnetocrystalline coupling between the crystallographic and skyrmion crystal (SKX) lattices in the chiral magnet MnSi by magnetic field-angle resolved resonant ultrasound spectroscopy. Abrupt changes are observed in the elastic moduli and attenuation when the magnetic field is parallel to the [011] crystallographic direction. These observations are interpreted in a phenomenological Ginzburg-Landau theory that identifies switching of the SKX orientation to be the result of an anisotropic magnetocrystalline coupling potential. Our paper sheds new light on the nature of magnetocrystalline coupling potential relevant to future spintronic applications.

In-depth study of the $H -T$ phase diagram of Sr4Ru3O10 by magnetization experiments

We present magnetization measurements on Sr4Ru3O10 as a function of temperature and magnetic field applied perpendicular to the magnetic easy $c$-axis inside the ferromagnetic phase. Peculiar metamagnetism evolves in Sr4Ru3O10 below the ferromagnetic transition $T_{C}$ as a double step in the magnetization at two critical fields $H_{c1}$ and $H_{c2}$. We map the $H-T$ phase diagram with special focus on the temperature range 50\,K $\le T \le T_{C}$. We find that the critical field $H_{c1}(T)$ connects the field and temperature axes of the phase diagram, whereas the $H_{c2}$ boundary starts at 2.8\,T for the lowest temperatures and ends in a critical endpoint at (1\,T; 80\,K). We conclude from the temperature dependence of the ratio $\frac{Hc1}{Hc2}(T)$ that the double metamagnetic transition is an intrinisc effect of the material and it is not caused by sample stacking faults such as twinning or partial in-plane rotation between layers.

Selective mass enhancement close to the quantum critical point in BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$

A quantum critical point (QCP) is currently being conjectured for the BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$ system at the critical value $x_{\rm c} \approx$ 0.3. In the proximity of a QCP, all thermodynamic and transport properties are expected to scale with a single characteristic energy, given by the quantum fluctuations. Such an universal behavior has not, however, been found in the superconducting upper critical field $H_{\rm c2}$. Here we report $H_{\rm c2}$-data for epitaxial thin films extracted from the electrical resistance measured in very high magnetic fields up to 67 Tesla. Using a multi-band analysis we find that $H_{\rm c2}$ is sensitive to the QCP, implying a significant charge carrier effective mass enhancement at the doping-induced QCP that is essentially band-dependent. Our results point to two qualitatively different groups of electrons in BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$. The first one (possibly associated to hot spots or whole Fermi sheets) has a strong mass enhancement at the QCP, and the second one is insensitive to the QCP. The observed duality could also be present in many other quantum critical systems.

Missing magnetism in Sr$_{4}$Ru$_{3}$O$_{10}$: Indication for Antisymmetric Exchange Interaction

We report a detailed study of the magnetization modulus as a function of temperature and applied magnetic field under varying angle in Sr$_{4}$Ru$_{3}$O$_{10}$ close to the metamagnetic transition at $H_{c}\backsimeq 2.5\,$T for $H \perp c$. We confirm that the double-feature at $H_{c}$ is robust without further splitting for temperatures below 1.8 K down to 0.48 K. The metamagnetism in Sr$_{4}$Ru$_{3}$O$_{10}$ is accompanied by a reduction of the magnetic moment in the plane of rotation and large field-hysteretic behavior. The double anomaly shifts to higher fields by rotating the field from $H\,\perp \,c$ to $H\,\parallel\,c$. We compare our experimental findings with numerical simulations based on spin reorientation models caused by intrinsic magnetocrystalline anisotropy and Zeeman effect. Crystal anisotropy is able to explain a metamagnetic transition in the ferromagnetic ordered system Sr$_{4}$Ru$_{3}$O$_{10}$, but a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya term is crucial to account for a reduction of the magnetic moment as discovered in the experiments.

Magnetic ordering in the frustrated J1-J2 Ising chain candidate BaNd2O4

The AR$_2$O$_4$ family (R = rare earth) have recently been attracting interest as a new series of frustrated magnets, with the magnetic R atoms forming zigzag chains running along the $c$-axis. We have investigated polycrystalline BaNd$_2$O$_4$ with a combination of magnetization, heat capacity, and neutron powder diffraction (NPD) measurements. Magnetic Bragg peaks are observed below $T_N$ $=$ 1.7 K, and they can be indexed with a propagation vector of $\vec{k}$ $=$ (0 1/2 1/2). The signal from magnetic diffraction is well described by long-range ordering from only one of the two types of Nd zigzag chains, with collinear up-up-down-down intrachain spin configurations. Furthermore, low temperature magnetization and heat capacity measurements reveal two field-induced spin transitions at 2.5 T and 4 T for $T$ $=$ 0.46 K. The high field phase is paramagnetic, while the intermediate field state may arise from a spin transition of the long-range ordered Nd chains, resulting in an up-up-down intrachain spin configuration. The proposed intermediate field state is consistent with the magnetic structure determined in zero field for these chains by NPD, as both phases are predicted for the classical Ising chain model with nearest neighbor and next nearest neighbor interactions.

Strong Enhancement of the Critical Current at the Antiferromagnetic Transition in ErNi2B2C Single Crystals

We report on transport and magnetization measurements of the critical current density Jc in ErNi2B2C single crystals that show strongly enhanced vortex pinning at the Neel temperature TN and low applied fields. The height of the observed Jc peak decreases with increasing magnetic field in clear contrast with that of the peak effect found at the upper critical field. We also performed the first angular transport measurements of Jc ever conducted on this compound. They reveal the correlated nature of this pinning enhancement, which we attribute to the formation of antiphase boundaries at TN.

Upper critical field and thermally activated flux flow in single crystalline Tl$_{0.58}$Rb$_{0.42}$Fe$_{1.72}$Se$_2$

The upper critical field $μ_0H_{c2}(T_c)$ of Tl$_{0.58}$Rb$_{0.42}$Fe$_{1.72}$Se$_2$ single crystals has been determined by means of measuring the electrical resistivity in both a pulsed magnetic field ($\sim$60T) and a DC magnetic field ($\sim$14T). It is found that $H_{c2}$ linearly increases with decreasing temperature for $\textbf{H}$$\parallel$$c$, reaching $μ_0H_{c2}^{\textbf{H}\parallel c}(0\textrm{K})\simeq60$ T. On the other hand, a larger $μ_0H_{c2}(0\textrm{K})$ with a strong convex curvature is observed for $\textbf{H}$$\perp$$c$ ($μ_0H_{c2}^{\textbf{H}\perp c}$(18K)$\simeq$60T). This compound shows a moderate anisotropy of the upper critical field around $T_c$, but decreases with decreasing temperature. Analysis of the upper critical field based on the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg (WHH) method indicates that $μ_0H_{c2}(0\textrm{K})$ is orbitally limited for $\textbf{H}$$\parallel$$c$, but the effect of spin paramagnetism may play an important role on the pair breaking for $\textbf{H}$$\perp$$c$. All these experimental observations remarkably resemble those of the iron pnictide superconductors, suggesting a unified scenario for the iron-based superconductors. Moreover, the superconducting transition is significantly broadened upon applying a magnetic field, indicating strong thermal fluctuation effects in the superconducting state of Tl$_{0.58}$Rb$_{0.42}$Fe$_{1.72}$Se$_2$. The derived thermal activation energy for vortex motion is compatible with those of the 1111-type iron pnictides.

Psuedo-isotropic upper critical field in cobalt-doped SrFe2As2 epitaxial films

The temperature and angular dependence of the upper critical field (Hc2) is reported for cobalt-doped SrFe2As2 epitaxial films between Tc and 0.5 K in pulsed magnetic fields up to 50 T. For H parallel c, Hc2 is close to a linear function of temperature, while in the perpendicular direction there is significant downward curvature that results in an Hc2 ratio (gamma = Hc2(perpendicular)/Hc2(parallel) that decreases nearly linearly with temperature, approaching gamma = 1 at low temperature with Hc2(0) = 47 T. We measure the complete upper-critical field phase diagram including angular dependence and model the data using a two band theory allowing us to determine the anisotropy of both bands, their relative diffusivities, and the relationship between BCS coupling constant matrix elements. We find an unusual relationship between the diffusivities of the two bands, with two anisotropic and opposite bands. This relationship is supported by the observation of a local maximum for Hc2(parallel) at low temperature.

Correlated enhancement of Hc2 and Jc in carbon nanotube-doped MgB2

The use of MgB2 in superconducting applications still awaits for the development of a MgB2-based material where both current-carrying performance and critical magnetic field are optimized simultaneously. We achieved this by doping MgB2 with double-wall carbon nanotubes (DWCNT) as a source of carbon in polycrystalline samples. The optimum nominal DWCNT content for increasing the critical current density, Jc is in the range 2.5-10%at depending on field and temperature. Record values of the upper critical field, Hc2(4K) = 41.9 T (with extrapolated Hc2(0) ~ 44.4 T) are reached in a bulk sample with 10%at DWCNT content. The measured Hc2 vs T in all samples are successfully described using a theoretical model for a two-gap superconductor in the dirty limit first proposed by Gurevich et al.

Doping-Dependent Nonlinear Meissner Effect and Spontaneous Currents in High-Tc Superconductors

We measure the local harmonic generation from superconducting thin films at microwave frequencies to investigate the intrinsic nonlinear Meissner effect near Tc in zero magnetic field. Both second and third harmonic generation are measured to identify time-reversal symmetry breaking (TRSB) and time-reversal symmetric (TRS) nonlinearities. We perform a systematic doping-dependent study of the nonlinear response and find that the TRS characteristic nonlinearity current density scale follows the doping dependence of the de-pairing critical current density. We also extract a spontaneous TRSB characteristic current density scale that onsets at Tc, grows with decreasing temperature, and systematically decreases in magnitude (at fixed T/Tc) with under-doping. The origin of this current scale could be Josephson circulating currents or the spontaneous magnetization associated with a TRSB order parameter.

Strongly Enhanced Current Densities in Superconducting Coated Conductors of YBa2Cu3O7-x + BaZrO3

There are numerous potential applications for superconducting tapes, based on YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO) films coated onto metallic substrates. A long established goal of more than 15 years has been to understand the magnetic flux pinning mechanisms which allow films to maintain high current densities out to high magnetic fields. In fact, films carry 1-2 orders of magnitude higher current densities than any other form of the material. For this reason, the idea of further improving pinning has received little attention. Now that commercialisation of conductors is much closer, for both better performance and lower fabrication costs, an important goal is to achieve enhanced pinning in a practical way. In this work, we demonstrate a simple and industrially scaleable route which yields a 1.5 to 5-fold improvement in the in-field current densities of already-high-quality conductors.

Angular dependent vortex pinning mechanisms in YBCO coated conductors and thin films

We present a comparative study of the angular dependent critical current density in YBa2Cu3O7 films deposited on IBAD MgO and on single crystal MgO and SrTiO3 substrates. We identify three angular regimes where pinning is dominated by different types of correlated and uncorrelated defects. We show that those regimes are present in all cases, indicating that the pinning mechanisms are the same, but their extension and characteristics are sample dependent, reflecting the quantitative differences in texture and defect density. In particular, the more defective nature of the films on IBAD turns into an advantage as it results in stronger vortex pinning, demonstrating that the critical current density of the films on single crystals is not an upper limit for the performance of the IBAD coated conductors.

Magneto-optical evidence for a gapped Fermi surface in underdoped YBa2Cu3O6+x

The infrared (900-1100 cm-1) Faraday rotation and circular dichroism are measured in the normal state of underdoped High Tc superconductors and used to study the magneto-transport. YBa2Cu3O6+x thin films are investigated in the temperature range 10-300 K in magnetic fields up to 8 Tesla and as a function of oxygen concentration. A dramatic increase of the Hall frequency is observed for underdoped samples which is not consistent with the approach to a Mott transition but is consistent with a partial gapping of the Fermi surface as predicted in charge density wave models.

Comment on `Strong Vortex Liquid Correlation' from Multiterminal Measurements on Untwinned YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ Single Crystals'

A.Rydh and Ö.Rapp [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 86}, 1873 (2001).] claim that the vortex liquid in untwinned YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ crystals is correlated above the melting transition, in striking contrast to previous work [D.López {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 76}, 4034 (1996).]. In this Comment we present new measurements using the same experimental technique on twinned and untwinned YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ crystals with similar overall characteristics as those reported by Rydh and Rapp . The comparison of the vortex correlation response in both cases indicates that the central conclusion of their work is not correct. Our results reconfirm the work by López {\it et al.} and points on the origin of the misinterpretation in the work of Rydh and Rapp.

Novel Vortex Solid State in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7 - δ}$ Twinned Crystals

We report on the scaling of transport properties around the vortex melting in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7- δ}$ oriented-twin single crystals in applied magnetic fields between 1T and 18T. We find that for all the measured field range the linear resistivity scales as $ρ(t,θ) \sim t^{sy} {\cal F}_{\pm} (\sin(θ)t^{-sx})$, with $t=|T-T_{BG}|$ and $θ$ the angle between de planar defects and the magnetic field. The scaling is valid only for angles where the transition temperature $T_{BG} (θ)$ shows a cusp. The critical exponents $sx$ and $sy$ are in agreement with the values predicted by Lidmar and Wallin only at magnetic fields below 4T. A change in the value of $sx$ from $sx = 1 \pm 0.2$ to $sx = 3 \pm 0.2$ at around $H^{cr} \approx $ 4T when the magnetic field is increased, is responsible for changes in the shape of the $T_{BG} (θ)$ curve and in the dependence of the linear dissipation on temperature and angle. The results strongly suggest the existence of a different vortex glassy phase in twinned crystals compared to the Bose-glass state found in samples with linear defects.
