Laser ablation of Co:ZnO films deposited from Zn and Co metal targets on (0001) Al$_2$O$_3$ substrates

We report on the synthesis of high-quality Co-doped ZnO thin films using the pulsed laser deposition technique on (0001)-Al$_2$O$_3$ substrates performed in an oxidizing atmosphere, using Zn and Co metallic targets. We firstly optimized the growth of ZnO in order to obtain the less strained film. Highly crystallized Co:ZnO thin films are obtained by an alternative deposition from Zn and Co metal targets. This procedure allows an homogenous repartition of the Co in the ZnO wurzite structure which is confirmed by the linear dependance of the out-of-plane lattice parameter as a function of the Co dopant. In the case of 5% Co doped, the film exhibits ferromagnetism with a Curie temperature close to the room temperature.

Epitaxial Growth of La$_{1/3}$Sr$_{2/3}$FeO$_3$ thin films by laser ablation

We report on the synthesis of high quality La$_{1/3}$Sr$_{2/3}$FeO$_3$ (LSFO) thin films using the pulsed laser deposition technique on both SrTiO$_3$ (STO) and LaAlO$_3$ (LAO) substrates (100)-oriented. From X-Ray diffraction (XRD) studies, we find that the films have an out-of-plane lattice parameter around 0.3865nm, almost independent of the substrate (i.e. the nature of the strains). The transport properties reveal that, while LSFO films deposited on STO exhibit an anomaly in the resistivity vs temperature at 180K (corresponding to the charge-ordered transition and associated with a transition from a paramagnetic to an antiferromagnetic state), the films grown on LAO display a very small magnetoresistance behavior and present an hysteresis around 270K under the application of a 4T magnetic field. The changes in transport properties between both substrates are discussed and compared with the corresponding single crystals.

Relations between structural distortions and transport properties in Nd$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ strained thin films

Strained thin films of charge/orbital ordered (CO/OO) $Nd_{0.5}Ca_{0.5}MnO_3$ (NCMO) with various thickness have grown on (100)-SrTiO$_3$ and (100)-LaAlO$_3$ substrates, by using the Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) technique. The thickness of the films influences drastically the transport properties. As the thickness decreases, the CO transition increases while at the same time the insulator-to-metal transition temperature decreases under application of a 7T magnetic field. Clear relationships between the structural distortions and the transport properties are established. They are explained on the basis of the elongation and the compression of the Mn-O-Mn and Mn-O bond angles and distances of the \QTR{it}{Pnma} structure, which modify the bandwidth and the Jahn-Teller distortion in these materials

Colossal magnetoresistive manganite thin films

Mixed-valence perovskite manganites (Re$_{1-x}$A$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$ where Re=rare earth, A=alkaline earth) provide a unique opportunity to study the relationships between the structure and the magnetotransport properties due to an interplay among charge carriers, magnetic coupling, orbital ordering and structural distortion. This makes these compounds very exciting from both the basic research and from the technological view point. As the technology pursued with these materials requires film growth, extensive studies have been made on materials synthesis, structural and physical characterization and device fabrication. In this article, the results of the different experimental techniques and the effects of the deposition procedure of the manganite thin films are first reviewed. Second, the relation between the structural and the physical properties mentioned, and the influence of strains discussed.\ Finally, possible applications of manganite thin films for spin electronics are presented.

Control of the colossal magnetoresistance by strain effect in Nd$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_{3}$ thin films

Thin films of Nd$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_{3}$ manganites with colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) properties have been synthesized by the Pulsed Laser Deposition technique on (100)-SrTiO$_{3}$. The lattice parameters of these manganites and correlatively their CMR properties can be controlled by the substrate temperature $T_{S}$. The maximum CMR effect at 75K, calculated as the ratio $ρ(H=0T)/ρ(H=7T)$ is 10$^4$ for a deposition temperature of $T_{S}=680$ degC. Structural studies show that the Nd$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_{3}$ film is single phase, [010]-oriented and has a pseudocubic symmetry of the perovskite subcell with a=3.77$Å$ at room temperature. We suggest that correlation between lattice parameters, CMR and substrate temperature $T_{S}$ result mainly from substrate-induced strains which can weaken the charge-ordered state at low temperature.

Stress-induced metallic behavior under magnetic field in Pr$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$ (x = 0.5 and 0.4) thin films

We have investigated the role of the stress-induced by the presence of the substrate in thin films of colossal magnetoresistive manganites on structural, resistive and magnetic properties. Because of the strong coupling between the small structural distortions related to the charge-ordering (CO) and the resistive properties, the presence of the substrate prevents the full developpement of the charge ordering in Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_{3}$, especially in the very thin films. For thicker films, the CO state exists, but is not fully developped. Correlatively, the magnetic field which is necessary to suppress the CO is decreased drastically from 25 Tesla to about 5 Tesla on SrTiO$_{3}$ substrates. We have also investigated the influence of the doping level by studying the case of Pr$_{0.6}$Ca$_{0.4}$MnO$_{3}$.

Thickness dependence of the stability of the charge-ordered state in Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_{3}$ thin films

Thin films of the charge-ordered (CO) compound Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_{3}$ have been deposited onto (100)-oriented SrTiO$_{3}$ substrates using the Pulsed Laser Deposition technique. Magnetization and transport properties are measured when the thickness of the film is varied. While the thinner films do not exhibit any temperature induced insulator-metal transition under an applied magnetic field up to 9T, for thickness larger than 1100\UNICODE{0xc5} a 5T magnetic field is sufficient to melt the CO state. For this latest film, we have measured the temperature-field phase diagram. Compared to the bulk material, it indicates that the robustness of the CO state in thin films is strongly depending on the strains and the thickness. We proposed an explanation based on the distortion of the cell of the film.

Spectacular decrease of the melting magnetic field in the charge-ordered state of tensile Pr0.5Ca0.5MnO3 films

An insulator to metal transition below 240K is induced by applying a 7T magnetic field in Pr0.5Ca0.5MnO3 thin films grown by the Pulsed Laser Deposition technique on (100) SrTiO3 substrates. This value of the melting magnetic field, much lower that the one required in bulk (20T), is assumed to be an effect of the tensile stress. These results confirm the importance of the bandwidth in the control of the physical properties of this compound and open the route to get colossal magnetoresistive properties by using strain effects.
