Multirange Ising model on the square lattice

We study the Ising model on $\mathbb{Z}^{2}$ and show, via numerical simulation, that allowing interactions between spins separated by distances $1$ and $m$ (two ranges), the critical temperature, $ T_c (m) $, converges monotonically to the critical temperature of the Ising model on $\mathbb{Z}^4$ as $ m \to \infty $. Only interactions between spins located in directions parallel to each coordinate axis are considered. We also simulated the model with interactions between spins at distances of $ 1 $, $ m $ and $ u $ (three ranges), with $ u $ a multiple of $ m $; in this case our results indicate that $ T_c(m, u) $ converges to the critical temperature of the model on $ \mathbb{Z}^6$. For percolation, analogous results were proven for the critical probability $p_c$ [B. N. B. de Lima, R. P. Sanchis and R. W. C. Silva, Stochastic Process. Appl. {\bf 121}, 2043 (2011)].

Is the Percolation Probability on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ with Long Range Connections Monotone?

We present a numerical study for the threshold percolation probability, $p_c$, in the bond percolation model with multiple ranges, in the square lattice. A recent Theorem demonstrated by de Lima {\it et al.} [B. N. B. de Lima, R. P. Sanchis, R. W. C. Silva, STOCHASTIC PROC APPL {\bf 121}, 2043-2048 (2011)] states that the limit value of $p_c$ when the long ranges go to infinity converges to the bond percolation threshold in the hypercubic lattice, $\mathbb{Z}^d$, for some appropriate dimension $d$. We present the first numerical estimations for the percolation threshold considering two-range and three-range versions of the model. Applying a finite size analysis to the simulation data, we sketch the dependence of $p_c$ in function of the range of the largest bond. We shown that, for the two-range model, the percolation threshold is a non decreasing function, as conjectured in the cited work, and converges to the predicted value. However, the results to the three-range case exhibit a surprising non-monotonic behavior for specific combinations of the long range lengths, and the convergence to the predicted value is less evident, raising new questionings on this fascinating problem.

Linear Lower Bounds for $δ_c(p)$ for a Class of 2D Self-Destructive Percolation Models

The self-destructive percolation model is defined as follows: Consider percolation with parameter $p > p_c$. Remove the infinite occupied cluster. Finally, give each vertex (or, for bond percolation, each edge) that at this stage is vacant, an extra chance $δ$ to become occupied. Let $δ_c(p)$ be the minimal value of $δ$, needed to obtain an infinite occupied cluster in the final configuration. This model was introduced some years ago by van den Berg and Brouwer. They showed that, for the site model on the square lattice (and a few other 2D lattices satisfying a special technical condition) that $δ_c(p)\geq\frac{(p-p_c)}{p}$. In particular, $δ_c(p)$ is at least linear in $p-p_c$. Although the arguments used by van den Berg and Brouwer look quite rigid, we show that they can be suitably modified to obtain similar linear lower bounds for $δ_c(p)$ (with $p$ near $p_c$) for a much larger class of 2D lattices, including bond percolation on the square and triangular lattices, and site percolation on the star lattice (or matching lattice) of the square lattice.

On the Truncation of Systems with Non-Summable Interactions

In this note we consider long range $q$-states Potts models on $\mathbf{Z}^d$, $d\geq 2$. For various families of non-summable ferromagnetic pair potentials $ϕ(x)\geq 0$, we show that there exists, for all inverse temperature $β>0$, an integer $N$ such that the truncated model, in which all interactions between spins at distance larger than $N$ are suppressed, has at least $q$ distinct infinite-volume Gibbs states. This holds, in particular, for all potentials whose asymptotic behaviour is of the type $ϕ(x)\sim \|x\|^{-α}$, $0\leqα\leq d$. These results are obtained using simple percolation arguments.

On Long Range Percolation with Heavy Tails

Consider independent long range percolation on $\mathbf{Z}^2$, where horizontal and vertical edges of length $n$ are open with probability $p_n$. We show that if $\limsup_{n\to\infty}p_n>0,$ then there exists an integer $N$ such that $P_N(0\leftrightarrow \infty)>0$, where $P_N$ is the truncated measure obtained by taking $p_{N,n}=p_n$ for $n \leq N$ and $p_{N,n}=0$ for all $n> N$.
