On the Malliavin-Rubel theorem on small entire functions of exponential type with given zeros

In the early 1960s, P. Malliavin and L. A. Rubel gave a complete description of pairs of distributions of positive points $Z$ and $W$ such that for each entire function of exponential type $g\neq 0$ that vanishes on $W$, there is an entire function of exponential type $f\neq 0$ such that $f$ vanishes on $Z$ and satisfies the inequality $|f|\leq |g|$ everywhere on the imaginary axis. We extend this result to much more general distributions of complex points $Z$ and $W$ lying outside of some pair of vertical angles containing the imaginary axis as the points approach $\infty$.

Meromorphic functions and differences of subharmonic functions in integrals and the difference characteristic of Nevanlinna. III. Estimates of integrals over fractal sets in terms of the Hausdorff measure and content

Let $U\not\equiv \pm\infty$ be a $δ$-subharmonic function on a closed disc of radius $R$ centered at zero. In the previous two parts of our paper, we obtained general and explicit estimates of the integral of the positive part of the radial maximum growth characteristic ${\mathsf M}_U(t):= \sup\bigl\{U(z)\bigm| |z|=r\bigr\}$ over the increasing integration function $m$ on the segment $[0, r]\subset [0,R)$ through the difference characteristic of Nevanlinna and the quantities associated with the integration function $m$. The third part of our paper contains estimates of these quantities in terms of the Hausdorff $h$-measure and $h$-content of compact subset $S\subset [0, r]$ such that the integration function $m$ is constant on each open component of the connectivity of the complement $[0, r]\setminus S$. The case of the d-dimensional Hausdorff measure is highlighted separately.

Meromorphic functions and differences of subharmonic functions in integrals and the difference characteristic of Nevanlinna. II. Explicit estimates of the integral of the radial maximum growth characteristic

Let $U\not\equiv \pm\infty$ be the difference of subharmonic functions, i.e., a $δ$-subharmonic function, on a closed disc of radius $R$ centered at zero. In the preceding first part of our paper, we obtained general estimates for the integral of the positive part of the radial maximum growth characteristic ${\mathsf M}_U(t):=\sup\bigl\{U(z)\bigm| |z|=r\bigr\}$ over the increasing integration function $m$ on the segment $[0, r]$ via the Nevanlinna difference characteristic and the modulus of continuity of the function $m$. The second part of the work gives an explicit view for such estimates, provided that the modulus of continuity of the function $m$ does not exceed some differentiable function $h$ on the open interval $(0,r)$ with the only condition $\sup\limits_{t\in (0,r)}\dfrac{h(t)}{th'(t)}<+\infty$. This condition is satisfied by any power functions $t\mapsto t^d$ of degree $d>0$. The estimates are optimal in a certain sense.

Meromorphic functions and differences of subharmonic functions in integrals and the difference characteristic of Nevanlinna. I. Radial maximum growth characteristics

Let $f$ be a meromorphic function on the complex plane $\mathbb C$ with the maximum function of its modulus $M(r,f)$ on circles centered at zero of radius $r$. A number of classical, well-known and widely used results allow us to estimate from above the integrals of the positive part of the logarithm $\ln^+M(t,f)$ over subsets of $E\subset [0,r]$ via the Nevanlinna characteristic $T(r,f)$ and the linear Lebesgue measure of the set $E$. The paper gives similar estimates for the Lebesgue-Stieltjes integrals of $\ln^+M (t,f)$ over the increasing integration function of $m$. The main part of the presentation is conducted immediately for the differences of subharmonic functions on closed discs with the center at zero, i.e, $δ$-subharmonic functions. The only condition in the main theorem is the Dini condition for the modulus of continuity of the integration function $m$. This condition is, in a sense, necessary. Thus, the first part of the work to a certain extent completes in a general form the research on the upper estimates of the integrals of the radial maximum growth characteristics of arbitrary meromorphic and $δ$-subharmonic functions through the Nevanlinna characteristic with its versions and through the characteristics of the integration function $m$.

Integrals of the difference of subharmonic functions over discs and planar small sets

The maximum of the modulus of a meromorphic function cannot be restricted from above by the Nevanlinna characteristic of this meromorphic function. But integrals from the logarithm of the module of a meromorphic function allow similar restrictions from above. This is illustrated by one of the important theorems of Rolf Nevanlinna in the classical monograph by A.A. Goldberg and I.V. Ostrovskii on meromorphic functions, as well as by the Edrei-Fuchs Lemma on small arcs and its versions for small intervals in articles by A.F. Grishin, M.L. Sodin, T.I. Malyutina. Similar results for integrals of differences of subharmonic functions even with weights were recently obtained by B.N. Khabiblullin, L.A. Gabdrakhmanova. All these results are on integrals over subsets on a ray. In this article, we establish such results for integrals of the logarithm of the modulus of a meromorphic function and the difference of subharmonic functions over discs and planar small sets. Our estimates are uniform in the sense that the constants in these estimates are explicitly written out and do not depend on meromorphic functions and the difference of subharmonic functions provided that these functions has an integral normalization near zero.

Necessary and sufficient conditions for zero subsets of holomorphic functions

Let $D$ be a domain in the complex plane, $M$ be an extended real function on $D$. If $f$ is a non-zero holomorphic function on $D$ with an upper constraint $|f|\leq \exp M$ on this domain $D$, then it is natural to expect that there must be some upper constraints on the distribution of zeros of this holomorphic function exclusively in terms of the function $M$ and the geometry of the domain $D$. We have investigated this question in detail in our previous works in the case when $M$ is a subharmonic function and the domain $D$ is arbitrary or with a non-polar boundary. The answer was given in terms of limiting the distribution of zeros of $f$ from above via the Riesz measure of the subharmonic function $M$. In this article, the function $M$ is the difference of subharmonic functions, or a $δ$-subharmonic function, and the upper constraints are given in terms of the Riesz charge of this $δ$-subharmonic function $M$. These results are also new to a certain extent for the subharmonic function $M$. The case when the domain D is the complex plane is considered separately. For the complex plane, it is possible to reach the criterion level.

Balayage of Measures on the Complex Plane with respect to Harmonic Polynomials and Logarithmic Kernels

Balayage of measures with respect to classes of all subharmonic or harmonic functions on an open set of a plane or finite-dimensional Euclidean space is one of the main objects of potential theory and its applications to the complex analysis. For a class $H$ of functions on $O$, a measure $ω$ on $O$ is a balayage of a measure $δ$ on $O$ with respect to this class $H$ if $\int_O h\, d δ\leq \int_O h\, dω$ for each $h\in H$. In our previous works we used this concept to study envelopes relative to classes of subharmonic and harmonic functions and apply them to describe zero sets of holomorphic functions on $O$ with growth restrictions near the boundary of $O$. In this article, we consider the complex plane $\mathbb C$ as $O$, and instead of the classes of all (sub)harmonic functions on $\mathbb C$, we use only the classes of harmonic polynomials of degree at most $p$, often together with the logarithmic functions-kernels $z\mapsto \ln |w-z|$, $w\in \mathbb C$. Our research has show that this case has both many similarities and features compared to previous situations. The following issues are considered: the sensitivity of balayage of measures to polar sets; the duality between balayage of measures and their logarithmic potentials, together with a complete internal description of such potentials; extension/prolongation of balayage with respect to polynomials and logarithmic kernels to balayage with respect to subharmonic functions of finite order $p$. The planned applications of these results to the theory of entire and meromorphic functions of finite order are not discussed here and will be presented later.

Generalization and development of the Malliavin-Rubel theorem on small entire functions of exponential type with given zeros

Previously, we developed the technique of balayage of measures or charges and ($δ$-)subharmonic functions of finite order onto an closed system of rays $S$ with a vertex at zero on the complex plane $\mathbb C$. In this article, we use only two kinds of balayage of measure and charge, as well as of subharmonic functions of finite type under the order $1$ and their differences. First, it is a classical balayage of the genus $q=0$ on a system of four closed rays: positive and negative, and real and imaginary semi-axis $\mathbb R^+$, $-\mathbb R^+$, $i\mathbb R^+$, $-i\mathbb R$. Second, it is two-sided balayage of genus $q=1$ from the open right and left half-planes $\mathbb C_{\rm rh}$ and $\mathbb C_{\rm lh}$ onto the imaginary axis $i\mathbb R$. The classical Malliavin-Rubel theorem gives necessary and sufficient conditions of the existence of an entire function of exponential type (we write e.f.e.t.) $f\not\equiv 0$, vanishing on the given positive sequence ${\sf Z}=\{{\sf z}_k\}_{k\in \mathbb N}\subset \mathbb R^+$ and satisfying the constraint $|f|\leq |g|$ on $i\mathbb R$, where $g$ is an e.f.e.t., vanishing on positive sequence ${\sf W}=\{{\sf w}_k\}_{k\in \mathbb N}\subset \mathbb R^+$. A combination of these special balayage processes of genus $q=0$ and $q=1$ allows us to extend the Malliavin-Rubel theorem to arbitrary complex sequences ${\sf Z}=\{{\sf z}_k\}_{k\in \mathbb N}\subset \mathbb C$ separated by a pair of vertical angles from the imaginary axis $i\mathbb R$, with much more general restrictions $\ln |f|\leq M$ on the imaginary axis $i\mathbb R$, where $M$ is an subharmonic function of finite type under the order $1$.

Balayage of Measures with respect to Classes of Subharmonic and Harmonic Functions

We investigate some properties of balayage, or, sweeping (out), of measures with respect to subclasses of subharmonic functions. The following issues are considered: relationships between balayage of measures with respect to classes of harmonic or subharmonic functions and balayage of measures with respect to significantly smaller classes of specific classes of functions; integration of measures and balayage of measures; sensitivity of balayage of measures to polar sets, etc.

On the Distribution of Zero Sets of Holomorphic Functions. IV. A Criterion

Let $D$ be a proper domain in the extended complex plane ${\mathbb C}_{\infty}:={\mathbb C}\cup \{\infty\}$, $M=M_+-M_-\not\equiv \pm \infty$ be a difference of non-trivial subharmonic functions $M_{\pm}\not\equiv \mp \infty$ on $D$, $\text{Hol}(D,M)$ be the class of holomorphic function $f$ on $D$ satisfying $|f|\leq \text{const}_f\exp M$ om $D$, ${\sf Z}\subset D$ be a sequence of points in $D$ without limits points in $D$. We give a complete description of the conditions under which the sequence $\sf Z$ is a sequence of all zeros for some nonzero function $f\in \text{Hol}(D,M)$.

Order version of the Hahn-Banach theorem, and envelopes. II. Applications to the function theory

Chapter 1 deals with the problem of the existence of an upper/lower envelope from a convex cone or, more generally, a convex set for functions on the projective limit of vector lattices with values in the completion of the Kantorovich space or on the extended real line. Vector, ordinal and topological dual interpretations of the existence conditions of such envelope and the method of its construction are given. Chapter 2 presents applications to the existence of a nontrivial (pluri)subharmonic and/or (pluri) harmonic minorant for functions in domains from finite-dimensional real or complex space. General approaches to the problems of nontriviality of weight classes of holomorphic functions, to the description of zero (sub)sets for such classes of holomorphic functions, to the problem of representation of a meromorphic function as a ratio holomorphic functions from a given weight class are indicated.

On the Distribution of Zero Sets of Holomorphic Functions. II

Let $D$ be a nonempty domain in $\mathbb C^n$. We give a scale of necessary conditions for the distribution of the zero set of holomorphic function $f$ on domain $D\subset {\mathbb C}^n$ under a restriction on its growth $|f|\leq \exp M$, where $M\not\equiv -\infty$ is a subharmonic function. If $n=1$, $D\neq \mathbb C$ is simply connected, and $M$ is continuous, then this conditions are sufficient.

On the Distribution of Zero Sets of Holomorphic Functions. III. Conversion Theorems

Let $D$ be a domain in the complex plane $\mathbb C$. It follows from first part of our work that if a non-zero holomorphic function $f$ on $D$ vanishes on a sequence ${\sf Z}\subset D$ and satisfies $|f|\leq M$ on $D$, where $M$ is a subharmonic function on $D$, then the the distribution of ${\sf Z}$ is subordinated to the Riesz measure $ν_M$ of $M$ in a certain sense. Here we show that this result is "almost reversible".

On the Distribution of Zero Sets of Holomorphic Functions

Let $M$ be a subharmonic function with Riesz measure $ν_M$ in a domain $D$ in the $n$-dimensional complex Euclidean space $\mathbb C^n$, and let $f$ be a nonzero function that is holomorphic in $D$, vanishes on a set ${\sf Z}\subset D$, and satisfies $|f| \leq \exp M$ on $D$. Then restrictions on the growth of $ν_M$ near the boundary of $D$ imply certain restrictions on the area/volume of $\sf Z$. We give a quantitative study of this phenomenon in the subharmonic framework.

Balayage of measures and subharmonic functions on a system of rays. I. Classic case

We develop classical balayage (sweeping) measures and subharmonic functions on the ray system $S$ with a general origin on the complex plane $\mathbb C$. This allows for a subharmonic function $v$ on $\mathbb C$ to construct also a subharmonic function on $\mathbb C$ that is harmonic outside $S$ and coincides with $v$ on $S$. We give applications to the relationship between the growth of an entire function on $S$ and the distribution of its zeros, the conditions of complete regular growth of entire and subharmonic functions on the ray system, to the problems of incompleteness of exponential systems in the spaces of holomorphic functions in nonconvex unbounded open sets narrowing near infinity. This first part of our work contains the necessary preparatory material for the construction of a new type of finite genus balayage on $S$ in the second part.

Balayage of measures and subharmonic functions on a system of rays. II. Balayage of finite genus and regularity of growth on one ray

We expand the classical balayage of measures and subharmonic functions on a system of rays $S$ with a common origin on the complex plane $\mathbb C$. This allows for an arbitrary subharmonic function $v$ of finite order on $\mathbb C$ build $δ$-subharmonic function on $\mathbb C$, harmonic outside $S$ coinciding with $v$ on $S$ outside the polar set, of the same order of growth as $v$. We give applications to the relationship of the growth of an entire function in $S$ with the distribution of its zeros.

Zero sets of holomorphic functions in the unit ball: non-radial growth characteristics

Let $f$ be a nonzero holomorphic function in the unit ball $\mathbb B$ of the $n$-dimensional complex Euclidean space $\mathbb C^n$ such that the function $f$ vanishes on the set ${\sf Z}\subset \mathbb B$ and satisfies the constraint $|f|\leq \exp M$ on $\mathbb B$, where $M\not\equiv \pm \infty$ is $δ$-subharmonic function on $\mathbb B$ with Riesz charge $μ_M$. We give a scale of integral uniform constraints from above on the distribution of the set ${\sf Z}$ via the charge $ν_M$ in terms of $(2n-2)$-Hausdorff measure of the set $\sf Z$, as well as test convex radial functions and $ρ$-subspherical functions on the unit sphere $\mathbb S \subset \mathbb C^n$, which at $n=1$ can be interpreted as $2π$-periodic $ρ$-trigonometrically convex functions on the real axis $\mathbb R \subset \mathbb C$.
