Evidence from neutron diffraction for superconductivity in the stabilized tetragonal phase of CaFe2As2 under uniaxial pressure

CaFe2As2 single crystals under uniaxial pressure applied along the c axis exhibit the coexistence of several structural phases at low temperatures. We show that the room-temperature tetragonal phase is stabilized at low temperatures for pressures above 0.06 GPa, and its weight fraction attains a maximum in the region where superconductivity is observed under applied uniaxial pressure. Simultaneous resistivity measurements strongly suggest that this phase is responsible for the superconductivity in CaFe2As2 found below 10 K in samples subjected to nonhydrostatic pressure conditions.

Magnetic structure of the edge-sharing copper oxide chain compound NaCu2O2

Single-crystal neutron diffraction has been used to determine the incommensurate magnetic structure of NaCu2O2, a compound built up of chains of edge-sharing CuO4 plaquettes. Magnetic structures compatible with the lattice symmetry were identified by a group-theoretical analysis, and their magnetic structure factors were compared to the experimentally observed Bragg intensities. In conjunction with other experimental data, this analysis yields an elliptical helix structure in which both the helicity and the polarization plane alternate among copper-oxide chains. This magnetic ground state is discussed in the context of the recently reported multiferroic properties of other copper-oxide chain compounds.

Magnetic Ordering in the Frustrated Heisenberg Chain System Cupric Chloride, CuCl$_2$

We report a detailed examination the magnetic structure of anhydrous cupric chloride CuCl2 carried out by powder neutron diffraction, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements on polycrystalline and single crystal samples as well as an evaluation of the spin exchange interactions by first principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Anhydrous CuCl2 shows one dimensional antiferromagnetic behavior and long range antiferromagnetic ordering below a Neel temperature of 23.9 K. Neutron powder and single crystal diffraction reveal that, below 23.9K, CuCl2 undergoes a phase transition into an incommensurate magnetic structure (propagation vector (1,0.2257,0.5) with a spin-spiral propagating along b and the moments confined in the bc crystallographic plane. Our DFT calculations show that the spin-spiral results from competing ferromagnetic nearest neighbor and antiferromagnetic next-nearest neighbor spin-exchange interaction along the spin chains. Implications for possible multiferroic behavior of CuCl2 are discussed.

Magnetic structures of quaternary intermetallic borocarbides RCo2B2C (R=Dy, Ho, Er)

The magnetic structures of the title compounds have been studied by neutron diffraction. In contrast to the isomorphous RNi2B2C compounds wherein a variety of exotic incommensurate modulated structures has been observed, the magnetic structure of ErCo2B2C is found to be collinear antiferromagnet with k=((1/2),0,(1/2)) while that of HoCo2B2C and DyCo2B2C are observed to be simple ferromagnets. For all studied compounds, the moments are found to be confined within the basal plane and their magnitudes are in good agreement with the values obtained from the low-temperature isothermal magnetization measurements. The absence of modulated magnetic structures in the RCo2B2C series (for ErCo2B2C, verified down to 50 mK) is attributed to the quenching of the Fermi surface nesting features.

On the ferromagnetic structure of the intermetallic borocarbide TbCo2B2C

Based on magnetization, specific heat, magnetostriction, and neutron diffraction studies on single-crystal TbCo2B2C, it is found out that the paramagnetic properties, down to liquid nitrogen temperatures, are well described by a Curie-Weiss behavior of the Tb+3 moments. Furthermore, below Tc= 6.3 K, the Tb-sublattice undergoes a ferromagnetic (FM) phase transition with the easy axis being along the (100) direction and, concomitantly, the unit cell undergoes a tetragonal-to-orthorhhombic distortion. For fields up to 90 kOe, no field-induced splitting of the Co 3d orbitals was observed; as such the internal field must be well below the critical value needed to polarize the Co 3d subsystem. The manifestation of a FM state in TbCo2B2C is unique among all other isomorphous borocarbides, in particular TbNi2B2C (Tn=15 K, incommensurate modulated magnetic state) even though the Tb-ions in both isomorphs have almost the same crystalline electric field properties. The difference in the magnetic modes of these Tb-based isomorphs is attributed to a difference in their exchange couplings caused by a variation in their lattice parameters and in the position of their Fermi levels.

Synthesis and magnetic characterization of TmCo2B2C

A new quaternary intermetallic borocarbide TmCo2B2C has been synthesized via a rapid-quench of an arc-melted ingot. Elemental and powder-diffraction analyses established its correct stoichiometry and single-phase character. The crystal structure is isomorphous to that of TmNi2B2C(I4/mmm) and is stable over the studied temperature range. Above 7 K, the paramagnetic state follows the modified Curie-Weiss behavior (X=C/(T-theta)+X0 wherein X0=0.008(1) emu/mole and the temperature-dependent term reflecting the paramagnetism of the Tm subsystem: ueff=7.6(2) uB [in agreement with the expected value for a free Tm3+ ion] and theta = -4.5(3) K. Long range ferromagnetic order of the Tm sublattice is observed to develop around ~1 K. No superconductivity is detected in TmCo2B2C down to 20 mK, a feature which is consistent with the general trend in the RCo2B2C series. Finally, the influence of the rapid-quench process on the magnetism (and superconductivity) of TmNi2B2C will be discussed and compared to that of TmCo2B2C.

Noncentrosymmetric Commensurate Magnetic Ordering of Multiferroic ErMn2O5

The non-centrosymmetric magnetic structure of ErMn$_2$O$_5$ has been shown to be very similar to that of HoMn$_2$O$_5$ (Vecchini {\it et al.}, 2008 Phys. Rev. B {\bf 77} 134434). The magnetic modulation at 25 K has propagation vector $\vec k$=(1/2,0,1/4) and the symmetry imposes very few constraints on the magnetic configurations allowed. Only by combining the results of bulk magnetisation measurements, powder and single crystal neutron diffraction and spherical neutron polarization analysis was it possible to distinguish clearly between different models. The susceptibility measurements show that the erbium magnetic moments are aligned parallel to the c-axis indicating strong single-ion anisotropy. Spherical neutron polarimetry demonstrates the presence of two unequally populated chirality domains in ErMn$_2$O$_5$ single crystals. X-ray diffraction measurements on an ErMn$_2$O$_5$ powder using synchrotron radiation show that the buckling angles of the Mn-O-Mn bond change below the transition to the ferroelectric phase.

Lattice and magnetic instabilities in CaFe2As2: A single crystal neutron diffraction study

Neutron diffraction measurements of a high quality single crystal of CaFe2As2 are reported. A sharp transition was observed between the high temperature tetragonal and low temperature orthorhombic structures at TS = 172.5K (on cooling) and 173.5K (on warming). Coincident with the structural transition we observe a rapid, but continuous, ordering of the Fe moments, in a commensurate antiferromagnetic structure is observed, with a saturated moment of 0.80(5)muB/Fe directed along the orthorhombic a-axis. The hysteresis of the structural transition is 1K between cooling and warming and is consistent with previous thermodynamic, transport and single crystal x-ray studies. The temperature onset of magnetic ordering shifts rigidly with the structural transition providing the clearest evidence to date of the coupling between the structural and magnetic transitions in this material and the broader class of iron arsenides.

Strong electron-phonon coupling in the rare-earth carbide superconductor La2C3

We present the results of a crystal structure determination using neutron powder diffraction as well as the superconducting properties of the rare-earth sesquicarbide La2C3 (Tc ~ 13.4 K) by means of specific heat and upper critical field measurements. From the detailed analysis of the specific heat and a comparison with ab-initio electronic structure calculations, a quantitative estimate of the electron-phonon coupling strength and the logarithmic average phonon frequency is made. The electron-phonon coupling constant is determined to λ~ 1.35. The electron-phonon coupling to low energy phonon modes is found to be the leading mechanism for the superconductivity. Our results suggest that La2C3 is in the strong coupling regime, and the relevant phonon modes are La-related rather than C-C stretching modes. The upper critical field shows a clear enhancement with respect to the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg prediction, consistent with strong electron-phonon coupling. Possible effects on the superconducting properties due to the noncentrosymmetry of the crystal structure are discussed.

Neutron diffraction study of YVO3, NdVO3, and TbVO3

The structural and magnetic properties of YVO3, NdVO3 and TbVO3 were investigated by single-crystal and powder neutron diffraction. YVO3 shows a structural phase transition at 200 K from an orthorhombic structure with the space group Pbnm to a monoclinic one with the space group P21/b. But supplementary high-resolution synchrotron diffraction experiments showed that the monoclinic distortion is extremely small. A group theoretical analysis shows that this magnetic state in the monoclinic phase is incompatible with the lattice structure, unless terms of higher than bilinear order in the spin operators are incorporated in the spin Hamiltonian. This observation is discussed in the light of recent theories invoking unusual many-body correlations between the vanadium t2g orbitals. A structural phase transition back to the orthorhombic space group Pbnm is observed upon cooling below 77 K. This transition is accompanied by a rearrangement of the magnetic structure into a mode compatible with the lattice structure. The crystal structures of NdVO3 and TbVO3 are closely similar to that of YVO3. However, only a single magnetic phase transition was found in the vanadium sublattice down to 9.5 K. Below 60 K the magnetic moments of the Nd- and Tb-ions are gradually polarized by the ordered vanadium moments. Below 11 K, we found a noncollinear order of the terbium moments.

Neutron scattering studies of the spin ices Ho2Ti2O7 and Dy2Ti2O7 in applied magnetic field

Neutron diffraction has been used to investigate the magnetic correlations in single crystals of the spin ice materials Ho2Ti2O7 and Dy2Ti2O7 in an external magnetic field applied along either the [001] or [1-10] crystallographic directions. With the field applied along [001] a long range ordered groundstate is selected from the spin ice manifold. With the field applied along [1-10] the experiments show that the spin system is separated into parallel (alpha) and perpendicular (beta) chains with respect to the field. This leads to partial ordering and the appearance of quasi-one-dimensional magnetic structures. In both field orientations this frustrated spin system is defined by the appearance of metastable states, magnetization plateaux and unusually slow, field regulated dynamics.

Susceptibility and dilution effects of the kagome bi-layer geometrically frustrated network. A Ga-NMR study of SrCr_(9p)Ga_(12-9p)O_(19)

We present an extensive gallium NMR study of the geometrically frustrated kagome bi-layer compound SrCr_(9p)Ga_(12-9p)O_(19) (Cr^3+, S=3/2) over a broad Cr-concentration range (.72<p<.95). This allows us to probe locally the kagome bi-layer susceptibility and separate the intrinsic properties due to the geometric frustration from those related to the site dilution. Our major findings are: 1) The intrinsic kagome bi-layer susceptibility exhibits a maximum in temperature at 40-50 K and is robust to a dilution as high as ~20%. The maximum reveals the development of short range antiferromagnetic correlations; 2) At low-T, a highly dynamical state induces a strong wipe-out of the NMR intensity, regardless of dilution; 3) The low-T upturn observed in the macroscopic susceptibility is associated to paramagnetic defects which stem from the dilution of the kagome bi-layer. The low-T analysis of the NMR lineshape suggests that the defect can be associated with a staggered spin-response to the vacancies on the kagome bi-layer. This, altogether with the maximum in the kagome bi-layer susceptibility, is very similar to what is observed in most low-dimensional antiferromagnetic correlated systems; 4) The spin glass-like freezing observed at T_g=2-4 K is not driven by the dilution-induced defects.

Formation of a magnetic soliton lattice in copper metaborate

The magnetic ground-state of copper metaborate is investigated by means of elastic neutron scattering. The magnetic structure of CuB2O4 is incommensurate with respect to the chemical lattice at T=1.8K and undergoes a continuous phase transition to a non-collinear commensurate antiferromagnetic state which is realized at T=10K. Close to the phase transition higher-order magnetic satellites are observed. Coexistence of long-range and short range magnetic order observed in both magnetic phases. This suggests that the association of the Dzyialoshinskii-Moriya interaction, lattice symmetry and tetragonal anisotropy leads to the formation of a three-dimensional magnetic soliton lattice.
