Ba$^+$ Quadrupole Polarizabilities: Theory versus Experiment

Three different measurements have been reported for the ground state quadrupole polarizability in the singly ionized barium (Ba$^+$) which disagree with each other. Our calculation of this quantity using the relativistic coupled-cluster method disagrees with two of the experimental values and is within the error bars of the other. We discuss the issues related to the accuracy of our calculations and emphasize the need for further experiments to measure the quadrupole polarizability for this state and/or the 5D states.

Three body on-site interactions in ultracold bosonic atoms in optical lattices and superlattices

The Mott insulator-superfluid transition for ultracold bosonic atoms in an optical lattice has been extensively studied in the framework of the Bose-Hubbard model with two-body on-site interactions. In this paper, we analyze the additional effect of the three-body on-site interactions on this phase transition in optical lattice and the transitions between the various phases that arise in an optical superlattice. Using the mean-field theory and the density matrix renormalization group method, we find the phase diagrams depicting the relationships between various physical quantities in an optical lattice and superlattice. We also suggest possible experimental signatures to observe the three-body interactions.

Mean field analysis of quantum phase transitions in a periodic optical superlattice

In this paper we analyze the various phases exhibited by a system of ultracold bosons in a periodic optical superlattice using the mean field decoupling approximation. We investigate for a wide range of commensurate and incommensurate densities. We find the gapless superfluid phase, the gapped Mott insulator phase, and gapped insulator phases with distinct density wave orders.

Brief remarks on "Electric dipole moment enhancement factor of thallium"

In a recent paper by Porsev et al. [arXiv:1201.5615v1], the authors have claimed to have resolved the controversy arising from the different ab initio results available for the EDM enhancement factor of Tl. In our opinion, any such attempt to resolve the discrepancies between different calculations has to thoroughly compare the basis sets used, methods employed and approximations considered in the two different cases. However, Porsev et al. have not succeeded in doing so in their current paper. We clarify some of their misunderstandings about our work and address some specific issues in this note.

Search For A Permanent Electric Dipole Moment Using Atomic Indium

We propose indium (In) as a possible candidate for observing the permanent electric dipole moment (EDM) arising from the violations of parity (P) and time-reversal (T) symmetries. This atom has been laser cooled and therefore the measurement of its EDM has the potential of improving on the current best EDM limit for a paramagnetic atom which comes from thallium. We report the results of our calculations of the EDM enhancement factor due to the electron EDM and the ratio of the atomic EDM to the electron-nucleus scalar-pseudoscalar (S-PS) interaction coupling constant in In in the framework of the relativistic coupled cluster theory. It might be possible to get new limits for the electron EDM and the S-PS CP violating coupling constant by combining the results of our calculations with the measured value of the EDM of In when it is available. These limits could have important implications for the standard model (SM) of particle physics.

Reply to Comment on "Reappraisal of the Electric Dipole Moment Enhancement Factor for Thallium"

In a recent Comment [arXiv:1108.3399], Dzuba and Flambaum have referred to the disagreement of the results of our latest calculations of Tl electron and scalar-pseudoscalar (S-PS) electric dipole moments (EDMs) and Cs parity non-conservation (PNC) with some other calculations. We have responded to all their points and also discussed the larger issues related to them. We have attempted to find the reasons for the disagreement between the results of our calculations and those of others. In particular, we have found that the two important reasons for the discrepancies between the Tl EDM calculations of Dzuba and Flambaum and ours are the different choice of single particle orbitals and the treatment of the valence-core correlation effects. We have demonstrated by numerical calculations that the $V^{N-3}$ orbitals used by Dzuba and Flambaum overestimate the Tl electron and S-PS EDMs at the Dirac-Fock level. The failure of their suggested consistency test as interpreted by us is explained for systems with strong correlation like Tl. Also, the importance of understanding the physics underlying different theories on which atomic EDM and PNC calculations are based and comparisons between them are emphasized.

Parity nonconservation in ytterbium ion

We consider parity nonconservation (PNC) in singly ionized ytterbium (Yb+) arising from the neutral current weak interaction. We calculate the PNC electric dipole transition amplitude (E1_PNC) and the properties associated with it using the relativistic coupled-cluster theory. E1_PNC for the [4f^{14}] ^2 6s --> [4f^{14}] ^2 5d_{3/2} transition in Yb+ has been evaluated to within an accuracy of 5%. The improvement of this result is possible. It therefore appears that this ion is a promising candidate for testing the standard model of particle physics.

Transition Properties of Low Lying States in Atomic Indium

We present here the results of our relativistic many-body calculations of various properties of the first six low-lying excited states of indium. The calculations were performed using the relativistic coupled-cluster method in the framework of the singles, doubles and partial triples approximation. We obtain a large lifetime ~10s for the [4p^6]5s^2 5p_{3/2} state, which had not been known earlier. Our precise results could be used to shed light on the reliability of the lifetime measurements of the excited states of atomic indium that we have considered in the present work.

Quantum Phases of Ultracold Bosonic Atoms in a One Dimensional Optical Superlattice

We analyze various quantum phases of ultracold bosonic atoms in a periodic one dimensional optical superlattice. Our studies have been performed using the finite size density matrix renormalization group (FS-DMRG) method in the framework of the Bose-Hubbard model. Calculations have been carried out for a wide range of densities and the energy shifts due to the superlattice potential. At commensurate fillings, we find the Mott insulator and the superfluid phases as well as Mott insulators induced by the superlattice. At a particular incommensurate density, the system is found to be in the superfluid phase coexisting with density oscillations for a certain range of parameters of the system.

Supersolid in a one-dimensional optical lattice in the presence of a harmonic trap

We study a system of ultra-cold atoms possessing long range interaction (e.g. dipole-dipole interaction) in a one dimensional optical lattice in the presence of a confining harmonic trap. We have shown that for large enough on-site and nearest neighbor interaction a supersolid phase can be stabilized, consistent with the previous Quantum Monte Carlo and DMRG results for the homogeneous system. Due to the external harmonic trap potential the supersolid phase coexists with other phases. We emphasize on the experimental signatures of the various ground state phases in the presence of a trap.

Relativistic general-order coupled-cluster method for high-precision calculations: Application to Al+ atomic clock

We report the implementation of a general-order relativistic coupled-cluster method for performing high-precision calculations of atomic and molecular properties. As a first application, the static dipole polarizabilities of the ground and first excited states of Al+ have been determined to precisely estimate the uncertainty associated with the BBR shift of its clock frequency measurement. The obtained relative BBR shift is -3.66+-0.44 for the 3s^2 ^1S_0^0 --> 3s3p ^3P_0^0 transition in Al+ in contrast to the value obtained in the latest clock frequency measurement, -9+-3 [Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 070802 (2010)]. The method developed in the present work can be employed to study a variety of subtle effects such as fundamental symmetry violations in atoms.

A Reappraisal of the Electric Dipole Moment Enhancement Factor for Thallium

The electric dipole moment (EDM) enhancement factor of atomic Tl is of considerable interest as it has been used in determining the most accurate intrinsic electron EDM limit to date. However, the value of this quantity varies from $-179$ to $-1041$ in different approximations. In view of the large uncertainties associated with many of these calculations, we have employed the relativistic coupled-cluster theory with single and double excitations and a subset of leading triple excitations and obtained the EDM enhancement factor of Tl as $-466$, which in combination with the most accurate measured value of Tl EDM yields $2.0 \times 10^{-27}\,{\mathrm e\,cm}$ as the new upper limit for the EDM of the electron. The importance of all-order correlation effects is emphasized and their trends are compared with those of two other ab initio calculations.

Comparative studies of dipole polarizabilities in Sr$^+$, Ba$^+$ and Ra$^+$ and their applications to optical clocks

Static dipole polarizabilities are calculated in the ground and metastable states of Sr$^+$, Ba$^+$ and Ra$^+$ using the relativistic coupled-cluster method. Trends of the electron correlation effects are investigated in these atomic ions. We also estimate the Stark and black-body radiation shifts from these results for these systems for the transitions proposed for the optical frequency standards and compare them with available experimental data.

Supersolid and solitonic phases in one-dimensional Extended Bose-Hubbard model

We report our findings on quantum phase transitions in cold bosonic atoms in a one dimensional optical lattice using the finite size density matrix renormalization group method in the framework of the extended Bose-Hubbard model. We consider wide ranges of values for the filling factors and the nearest neighbor interactions. At commensurate fillings, we obtain two different types of charge density wave phases and a Mott insulator phase. However, departure from commensurate fillings yield the exotic supersolid phase where both the crystalline and the superfluid orders coexist. In addition, we obtain signatures for solitary waves and also superfluidity.

Induced supersolidity in a normal and hardcore boson mixture

It is well known that the supersolid form of matter can arise in a single species of cold bosonic atoms in an optical lattice due to long range interactions. We present a scenario where a supersolid is induced in one of the components of a mixture of two species bosonic atoms where there is no long range interactions. We study a system of normal and hardcore boson mixture with only the former possessing long range interactions. We consider three cases: the first where the total density is commensurate and the other two where they are incommensurate . By suitable choices of the densities and the interaction strengths of the atoms, we predict that the charge density wave and the supersolid orders can be induced in the hardcore species as a result of the competing interatomic interactions.

Relativistic Theory of the Electric Dipole Moment of an Atom due to the Electric Dipole Moment of an Electron

The relativistic theory for the electric dipole moment (EDM) of paramagnetic atoms arising from the electric dipole moment of the electron is presented. A novel approach using the relativistic coupled-cluster method that incorporates the residual Coulomb interaction to all orders and a weak parity and time-reversal violating interaction to one order has been employed in Fr to obtain the enhancement of the EDM of that atom compared to the EDM of the electron. Trends of the different correlation effects and leading contributions from different physical states are discussed. Our result in combination with that of the Fr EDM that is currently in progress, has the potential to probe the validity of the Standard Model (SM) of elementary particle physics.

Probing CP violation with the electric dipole moment of atomic mercury

The electric dipole moment of atomic $^{199}$Hg induced by the nuclear Schiff moment and tensor-pseudotensor electron-nucleus interactions has been calculated. For this, we have developed and employed a novel method based on the relativistic coupled-cluster theory. The results of our theoretical calculations combined with the latest experimental result of $^{199}$Hg electric dipole moment, provide new bounds on the T reversal or CP violation parameters $θ_{\rm QCD}$, the tensor-pseudotensor coupling constant $C_T$ and $(\widetilde{d}_u - \widetilde{d}_d)$. This is the most accurate calculation of these parameters to date. We highlight the the crucial role of electron correlation effects in their interplay with the P,T violating interactions. Our results demonstrate substantial changes in the results of earlier calculations of these parameters which can be attributed to the more accurate inclusion of important correlation effects in the present work.

Relativistic coupled-cluster studies of ionization potentials, lifetimes and polarizabilities in singly ionized calcium

Using the relativistic coupled-cluster method, we have calculated ionization potentials, E1 matrix elements and dipole polarizabilities of many low-lying states of Ca$^+$. Contributions from the Breit interaction are given explicitly for these properties. Polarizabilities of the ground and the first excited d-states are determined by evaluating the wave functions that are perturbed to first order by the electric dipole operator and the black-body radiation shifts are estimated from these results. We also report the results of branching ratios and lifetimes of the first excited p-states using both the calculated and experimental wavelengths and compare them with their measured values.
