Calibration features of a polarimetric backscattering setup with a beamsplitter

We address the problem of calibrating a polarimetric backscattering setup that includes a beamsplitter, taking its optical properties into account. Using Fisher information, we justify a specific calibration configuration involving reference optical elements for the maximum likelihood method and demonstrate its effectiveness through Monte Carlo simulations. This approach leads to higher precision, as the described set of measurements allows the beamsplitter to be treated as an integral part of the setup, without requiring separate processing or reconfiguration of the setup for the beamsplitter calibration. Furthermore, we emphasize the significance of considering the beamsplitter's optical properties by proposing a test to estimate the error that arises from neglecting these properties during the calibration procedure.

Neutron Diffraction Reveals the Existence of Confined Water in Triangular and Hexagonal Channels of Modified YPO4 at Elevated Temperatures

We provide experimental evidence for confinement of water molecules in the pores of hexagonal structure of YPO4 at elevated temperatures upto 600 K using powder neutron diffraction. In order to avoid the large incoherent scattering from the hydrogen, deuterated samples of doped YPO4:Ce-Eu were used for diffraction measurements. The presence of water molecules in the triangular and hexagonal pores in the hexagonal structure was established by detailed simulation of the diffraction pattern and Rietveld refinement of the experimental data. It was observed that the presence of water leads specifically to suppression of the intensity of a peak around Q = 1.04 Å-1while the intensity of peaks around Q=1.83Å-1 is enhanced in the neutron diffraction pattern. We estimate the number of water molecules as 2.36 (6) per formula units at 300 K and the sizes of the hexagonal and triangular pores as7.2 (1) Å and 4.5 (1) Å, respectively. With increase in temperature, the water content in both the pores decreases above 450 K and vanishes around 600 K. Analysis of the powder diffraction data reveals that the hexagonal structure with the pores persist up to 1273 K, and transforms to another structure at 1323 K. The high temperature phase is not found to have the zircon or the monazite type structure, but a monoclinic structure (space group P2/m) with lattice parameters am= 6.826 (4) Å, bm= 6.645 (4) Å, cm= 10.435 (9)Å, and \b{eta}= 107.21 (6)°. The monoclinic structure has about 14 % smaller volume than the hexagonal structure which essentially reflects the collapse of the pores. The phase transition and the change in the volume are also confirmed by x-ray diffraction measurements. The hexagonal to the monoclinic phase transition is found to be irreversible on cooling to room temperature.

Experimental access to Transition Distribution Amplitudes with the PANDA experiment at FAIR

Baryon-to-meson Transition Distribution Amplitudes (TDAs) encoding valuable new information on hadron structure appear as building blocks in the collinear factorized description for several types of hard exclusive reactions. In this paper, we address the possibility of accessing nucleon-to-pion ($πN$) TDAs from $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- π^0$ reaction with the future PANDA detector at the FAIR facility. At high center of mass energy and high invariant mass squared of the lepton pair $q^2$, the amplitude of the signal channel $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- π^0$ admits a QCD factorized description in terms of $πN$ TDAs and nucleon Distribution Amplitudes (DAs) in the forward and backward kinematic regimes. Assuming the validity of this factorized description, we perform feasibility studies for measuring $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- π^0$ with the PANDA detector. Detailed simulations on signal reconstruction efficiency as well as on rejection of the most severe background channel, i.e. $\bar{p}p \to π^+π^- π^0$ were performed for the center of mass energy squared $s = 5$ GeV$^2$ and $s = 10$ GeV$^2$, in the kinematic regions $3.0 < q^2 < 4.3$ GeV$^2$ and $5 < q^2 < 9$ GeV$^2$, respectively, with a neutral pion scattered in the forward or backward cone $| \cosθ_{π^0}| > 0.5 $ in the proton-antiproton center of mass frame. Results of the simulation show that the particle identification capabilities of the PANDA detector will allow to achieve a background rejection factor of $5\cdot 10^7$ ($1\cdot 10^7$) at low (high) $q^2$ for $s=5$ GeV$^2$, and of $1\cdot 10^8$ ($6\cdot 10^6$) at low (high) $q^2$ for $s=10$ GeV$^2$, while keeping the signal reconstruction efficiency at around $40\%$. At both energies, a clean lepton signal can be reconstructed with the expected statistics corresponding to $2$ fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. (.../...)

Investigations of temperature-dependent photoluminescence of uncoated and silver-coated CdS quantum dots

We report temperature-dependent photoluminescence (PL) studies and PL relaxation dynamics for uncoated and silver-coated CdS quantum dots (QDs). Room-temperature photoluminescence studies indicate that the presence of silver coating on CdS QD samples enhances the blue luminescence corresponding to the band-to-band transitions by a factor of ten compared to the uncoated samples. Furthermore, the decay time measurements using Time Correlated Single Photon Counting technique demonstrate Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) between silver-shell and CdS-core in silver-coated CdS QD samples. A detailed investigation of temperature-dependent PL spectra of uncoated CdS QD samples reveals the role of thermally-activated surface-trap states, exciton-LO phonon coupling and ionized impurity scattering. In case of silver-coated QDs, the temperature-dependent PL peak energy corresponding to the band-to-band transitions presents a consecutive red-blue-red shift (S-shaped) behavior. Whereas, the full width at half maximum (FWHM) shows a successive blue-red-blue shift (inverted S-shaped) characteristic with increasing temperature.

Observation of four-photon absorption and determination of corresponding nonlinearities in CdS quantum dots

Bound- and excited-state electronic nonlinearities in CdS quantum dots have been investigated by Degenerate Four-Wave Mixing (DFWM) and Z-scan techniques in the femtosecond time regime. This QD sample shows Kerr-type nonlinearity for incident beam intensity below 0.18 TW/cm$^2$. However, further increment in intensity results in four-photon absorption (4PA) indicated by open- and closed-aperture Z-scan experiments. Comparing open-aperture Z-scan experimental results with theoretical models, the 4PA coefficient $α_4$ has been deduced. Furthermore, third-order nonlinear index $γ$ and refractive-index change coefficient $σ_r$ corresponding to excited-state electrons due to 4PA have been calculated from the closed-aperture Z-scan results. UV-visible absorption and photoluminescence experimental results are analyzed towards estimating band gap energy and defect state energy. Time Correlated Single Photon Counting (TCSPC) was employed to determine the decay time corresponding to band-edge and defect states. The linear and nonlinear optical techniques have allowed the direct observation of lower and higher-order electronic states in CdS quantum dots.

Parameter estimation of beta-geometric model with application to human fecundability data

The present study deals with the estimation of the mean value of fecundability by fitting a theoretical distribution from the observed month of first conception of the married women who did not use any contraceptive method before their first conception. It is assumed that fecundability is fixed for a given couple, but across couples it varies according to a specified distribution. Under the classical approach, methods of moment and maximum likelihood are used while for Bayesian approach we use the above two estimates as prior for fecundability parameter. A real data analysis from the third National Family Health Survey (NFHS-III) is analyzed as an application of model. Finally, a simulation study is performed to access the performance of the several of methods used in this paper
